  • We know that Sansevieria plants are one of the easiest houseplants to care for. They are the perfect indoor plants for beginners because they are easy to care for and almost un-killable. Almost… That's because you can still kill a snake plant...Confession, I have killed a snake plant before... In today’s video I’ll share with you some of the ways to kill your snake plants so you can hopefully you can avoid the same mistake I made. We’ll also propagate the Zeylanica and Whale Fin through the division and water method. Enjoy

I was at Walmart and I saw this 4" snake plant. It wasn't even in a pot. It was laying there roots all out waiting to die. I used to work there and I know they would throw it away. So I picked it up shoved it back into it's pot & bought it. When I got home I transplanted it. I named it "Lucky" cause it's lucky to be alive. It is very happy now. It has grown 2" & had a baby.

I love snake plants now... I used to look down on them as though they were the McDonald's fast food of the plant world... but have great appreciation for them now. One propagation tip that has helped me which I believe has made a difference. I find I have much better success rate and faster root development if I let the cuttings heal for a week before putting in water or soil. When I put them straight into water, many times the cut will get soft and start to rot. It takes some patience but I think it's worth letting the cut dry out a few days.

Thick leaved plants need to heal before being planted, if not then they will absorb the moisture and become soft and mushy and rot.

Perfect timing for this video…I just bought a medium size Sansevieria that was literally busting out of its pot with a new 2-leaf baby the same size...Now I know where to cut, and not to be afraid to cut! I refuse to call them snake plants because I have a phobia about snakes. 😳 They will always be Sansevieria to me. I also have a large Mother-in-Law’s Tongue. I do love all plants that only need to be watered once a month! Thanks again! 💕

Thank you so much for admitting a snake plant can be killed!! I have the toughest time with them b/c I can't seem to read the signs...are they thirsty or not? I think I've killed a number of them from severly underwatering them and one from over-watering. And let's not talk about propagating them....I've NEVER been successful. I am a Sanseviera and Hoya and orchid cactuses lover. I went to a nursery one day and they had a Whale Fin they were about to toss as she had a big circle of dry leaf in the middle as it froze during transportation. I got it for almost nothing... to thank me for saving her from the garbage can, she gave me a "baby" few weeks after... not she is about 2.5' high... in less than a year... a real beauty. I also have (besides 5 more species) a Moonshine that I have to separate as she is bursting her pot... I think I have something like 10-12 babies in it.
I have Sanseviera for ever since my mom gave me one of hers when I was young and I never lost one... yet... when I moved very far away 25 years ago I had to give all my plants 😪 ... my Sanseviera was giganormous... I was heart broken to give them away but I was not able to bring them with me, sadly.
I love your videos... and your cat 😊

The good part of the leaf I cut up into smaller pieces like you did, let it callous over before water propagating, and I left it out for a good week before I put them in water! But now, two months or so later, I have roots! It's definitely exciting!

Great explanation of separating the pup from the mother. I didn't know that you could cut into the rhysomes, so that's very good to know. But, mostly I am wondering why you do not use clay pots as I've always heard they help the plant roots breathe. I was under the impression that plastic pots are not good for the root system long term. I see you have in the room there in the background there, so I know you must know about them! Thanks! Just propagated my 2 y/o whale fin and followed your instructions. Had 2 leaves that came off without roots and planted them separately. They’re all outside. Crossed fingers and hoping to get some roots before it starts getting cold. End up having 5 new/old plants plus discovered 4 new pups too! I have given away lots of Sansevierias from new growths to friends but not these whale fins😂🤣😂! Take care & be well.

Hi Christain, I killed a snake plant a couple of months ago from overwatering. I have never been able to get the leaf cuttings to root. They rot. I have tried in water and dirt with rooting hormone. You are lucky to have the whale fins. They are so hard to find in Pa. and very expensive when you finally do. I finally got one from ebay but it is only about 6" tall and not growing very much. Hopefully it will take off sometime soon.
As usual a fantastic informative video.

Hi Alice, that’s good that you know how your snake plant died to help you with your future ones and that whale fin is one you don’t want to kill, like you said very hard to find and $$$. They are slow growers I find that the baby that they’ll shout out will eventually outgrow the mother plant 😆

Try the dirt propagation method. I spent like 3 months with eating for cuttings to grow in water,in good lighting ,and good temperature, but nothing. I decided to stick them in dirt instead. I'm happy to say, they've started rooting. It's been maybe a month or 3 weeks .

I just bought a Moonshine today that was basically bursting out of its 5 inch pot. It already produced 2 pups and from what I could tell from just looking at it, it was made out of 4 initial cuttings crammed together into this tiny pot. When I got home I figured I'd let it acclimate to my room a little bit before I divide it, but I ended up dividing it immidiately, because I noticed some weird white powder leaking out of the bottom of the pot. I got a little concerned, cuz the good old internet told me it was a fungus, so I thoroughly washed the plant and treated it with some organic pesticides to prevent any infection and pest attacking it after the whole process.
Anyways, in the end, I got 6 Moonshines for 10€ total with another tiny pup already in the making!

Before lockdown like many, I was an awful plant mum, so bad I managed to kill a snake plant by overwatering. thankfully managed to save it by removing the rot and putting it back into the new soil. it has roots now so it's back to being a baby snake plant and now I have a moisture meter and cacti soil, perlite! haha, I've learned so much in the past few months. Now I have about 26 new plants, dealing with fungus gnats which gave me a crash course on hydrogen peroxide and microwaving soil! haha now while I wait to water my plants again I watch youtube videos on plants, it's so much fun and soothing? Also, learn more and more. I love your channel, you're such an easy-going guy who loves plants. Also, your t-shirt is on point!

I have 2 questions about propagation (that my local florist shop didn't know the answer to).
1- I lost a big leaf (not as big as yours) that I was able to get roots from. I think my variety was Black Gold. I didn't cut the leaf into smaller cuts because I was trying to save it. Once it had roots, I planted it. I saw an offshoot and that pup is doing well. But then the original leaf was starting to look like it was dying. I was able to pull it away from the pup and I cut the dead part off and it's in water again to propagate.
Are these original leaves (from cuttings) supposed to be only a host and then die once it's provided new pups? Or is there a way to save big beautiful leaves?
2- are all new pups from cuttings supposed to be only green -regardless of the species of snake plant it is? My black gold pups is all green, but I wonder if the same principle goes for Moonshine, Laurentii, and Hahnii? Will they be just green and tall or just green and the height will be as normal? TY for any one who is able to help!

I just unpotted my snake plant this morning of about 2 years old as I planted in a huge 12 inch pot and it has NOT grow at all in the 2 years! But when I did unpot the plant, it did NOT have any of the ryzones (sp?) that you have in your snake plant, it only had a few roots hanging on. I separated the plant into two plants and put them in 6" terracotta pots each, and used a much lighter potting soil that hardly hold them up! LOL! Question: will they eventually develop ryzones or is this a lost cause??

I've had 2 snake plants die on me. The first one I think I divided it wrong, and I might have overwatered it as well. It never looked healthy, and only got worse as time went on until it finally died. A couple years later, I thought I'd try my hand at it again, and this time I was much more careful in repotting it, and much more intentional about its watering schedule. I named him Harambe. He did really well, shooting up new growth. He had some dying leaves around the edge, but the one leaf in the middle looked really nice. However, as his name suggests, he met an untimely death. He had been sitting on my desk, and one of my friends reached to grab something on my desk and by bringing his elbow back, snapped Harambe's biggest, newest leaf right in half. I tried to splint it, but it didn't heal, and ultimately Harambe never recovered from that incident.

In my experience water propagation is really good when it comes to creating roots but rooting the base of the leaf in soil will put out new shoots much faster... All methods are good tho.
