I wanted to see a BTS camera following around the real and showing the background coordination. I wanted to know how much people were scrambling around behind the camera. We see a little bit of that in this but I want more!
Netflix in general should do more making-of documentaries. Some of their shows are the most masterful storytelling currently being made. And some of us want to know all the nerdy details about what goes into them.
The effort put into this particular episode absolutely paid off. I was about 10 minutes in before I realized what was being accomplished. I was absolutely floored. I can honestly put this in my top 10 favorite episodes of television. Not only did The Haunting of Hill House deliver on the spookiness, but it had heart. It made you really care for these characters. It lulled you into being vulnerable, and then used your vulnerability to scare you. It was effective filmmaking all around. If you aren't crying or being blown away by technical achievements, then you're probably looking over your shoulder to make sure nothing is lurking behind you. What an unexpected gem.
When Nell saw Author inside of the house... that shit hurt lol. I actually care for this family. --- I just watched episode 5 & 6 last night so everything is still fresh.
I’ve been telling everyone about it! Yay I’m not alone in loving that episode. The pacing and camera flow of the funeral home created such tension. I knew it was something special.
While I was watching it was hard to concentrate on the plot. All I could think is, "God damn just have a cut already, this is absolutely insane." Like that first scene was what? 12 minutes plus? The skill and the planning that takes is just mental.
First cut of the episode is when the chandelier falls-which I think is 15 minutes in! So good--went back and watched the sequence multiple times! Such a achievement!!!
I'm just imagining how hugely satisfying it must be as an actor to do something like this. I'm primarily a theatre actor and I often hear from actors who prefer doing film that they don't like the in-depth rehearsal process of theatre and the pressure of only having one chance in performance to get it right and they feel like on stage they have to be so much "bigger"...whereas I enjoy that process and that pressure and have a hard time raising the stakes for myself emotionally in an on-camera situation. But this episode is kind of the best of both worlds, like Hugh Thomas said. From an audience perspective it feels very theatrical, it has the energy of a live performance and they draw you in with them like you're all experiencing it in real-time. Truly incredible.
This show was great. It didn't really feel like a horror, and all the scares were really just jump scares, but it builds up tension so well and delivers a remarkable, character-driven story.
The raw existential horror was the real horror of the show. Tricking us into believing the kitten was alive when really, it was just a bug crawling out of its mouth. Shirley cutting out her dead sister's internal organs in the fear that another person's make-up couldn't capture Nell's live self properly. Theo's idea of a painfully void afterlife of absolute, eternal nothingness. The anxiety of your children growing up to become addicts or wind up dead or inherit a horrible illness. That's horror
Hey, it is adapted from the novel - Haunting of Hill House. Which actually is a terror novel not horror. And I found out the difference just a a couple of days before I watched it :) That the anticipation of the scare - the anxiety, elevated heart rate, sweating, is called terror and the revulsion you feel after you experience the supernatural is horror. Having known that I think they did a superb job. The novel is also considered the best in the terror genre. A pure terror work in general is rather rare. And I gotta say I really felt anxious watching it and for a couple of days after. While I usually laugh through the horror movies these days.
i was watching this episode so deeply and like 5 minutes into it, i was like “wait wait holy shit... this is one shot” and the aspiring movie geek in me jumped out and i started like crying sort of like “omg they had to film this over 15 minute shot, everything is perfect and choreographed so neatly, the swiftness of the exchanges and pans so amazing. I can’t wait till i get older and start creating stuff like this. And the actors hit every. single. beat. never missed!” it was overall so entertaining and intriguing, i 100% value the cast and especially crew for the precision of this episode and entire show. This show deserves manyyy awards, it’s so completly driven.
This was an incredible episode. The long takes definitely helped to ramp up the tension between the family and the dread of them wandering the house during the storm. And the last scene with Nell was just so heartbreaking.
I was immediately reminded of the long take from True Detective season 1. In both instances, I felt like I was in the middle of the action and a part of the story. Brilliant film making.
Incredible episode and achievement! Five minutes in I realized the continuous shot. I restarted the episode and focused on the difficult and wonderful work from the cast and crew. It was marvelous and terrifying!
After being completely floored by that ending in episode 5, you think 'now this couldnt get any better' and they hit you in the face with this gem of an episode.
Hats off. You all really worked hard... To make such a jewel. The hill-house , though, dipicted as a monster but in the end, some positive sides of hill house are also conveyed subtlety.
I noticed the sequence shot at the beginning of the episode and was completely absorbed by how great it was. That whole episode is a masterpiece, truly.
While watching this episode my mind was blown thinking how they could have filmed all of that. Good job to everyone that worked on it, especially the kids who are very promising actors.
This is golden. Thank you! One of the best horror media I've seen and I still look for editing cuts on the 6th episode. It seems really unlikely. Bravo.
This episode was so amazing, I was so mesmerized by how it was all in one take. I didn’t believe it first and tried to find places where they might’ve cut but I couldn’t
This show was fucking incredible. Such a perfect mix between terror and deep sadness throughout the whole show. Some episode felt like a horror movie, but a lot of it was just so so sad, made me cry more than scream tbh. It built such tension in many scenes and added so much to the atmosphere. And the characters were just phenomenal. Such amazing casting and the actors were so damn good. Nell and Theo were my absolute favourite of course.😭💕 #NellDeservedBetter
I just finished watching this episode and it was phenomenal! How it was shot was impressive and the scare factor was subtle at times yet very intense. Everything about it was amazing!
I have sorround sound equipment and my Chromecast does support it but my TV sadly doesn't. Maybe it's the HDMI slot or the system of the TV. I can only utilize the sorround sound when I watch a DVD. I really should get a new TV.
21minute If you do get a new tv, shop around. I got a 55” OLED for $1300 by finding the price online, printing out the page & info, then taking it to a store that does price matching. Also, some credit cards have programs that do the same thing - I essentially got the tv for $800 because I got $500 back from my credit card company.
Yeah sounds like a good idea until you reach EP 8 when the crazy ass jump scare happens when Theo and Shirley are arguing in the car on the way back to the hill house... shit my pants and I was watching on my phone lmfao
Nick Dreezy Try watching with surround sound, lying in bed, with a window behind you - watching the scene in the funeral home when someone is knocking on the door. 😳😈👻
This is the most amazing horror movie series that is not horrror, it is so much about the Feelings that people have one for another. things left unsaid. the cinematography is so overwhelming, how come in every shot that has a pan or tilt when the movement stops and the frame is perfect. It bring s so much in to our attention the Being next to close but being far. ,Somuch a drama about wonderful people. . the suffering that Nell goes through ..is so stabbing into our emotional side. it has so many moments where it melts your heart. and the scary scenes are so clever made without the spirits shouting something or anything .Netflix this might be your masterpiece!
One of the best👏👏👏 you cannot stop once you start to watch..all of the cast especiallly the director and the writer did amazing job here..congratulations👏👏👏
I just started watching this series two days ago and already binged to the last two episodes. Amazing show, I am looking forward to the sequel. Mike Flanagan is an amazing director and writer, Hush, Before I Wake, this, all gold.
I stared in awe for both this episode's part of the story and this episode's particular direction, especially when I suddenly realized that what I was watching could've been done in one take. While the scary parts were definitely enthralling, I was so into the dialogue and how everything was falling apart between the characters in the funeral home. Fantastic work all around from everyone involved. I truly loved the entire show, I can't even begin to imagine what season 2 could bring!
I watched this episode with my eyes absolutely glued on to the screen, and i don’t remember looking away at all. This episode was so captivating and the dialogue was amazing and the shots.. oh boy the shots. The continued shots are what i think made this so suspenseful
Can I just say this is one of my favorite episodes because of how amazing the camera work was. I honestly love how much it caught my eyes and the way they directed the camera on the actors and everything else. This episode definitely felt like the most climactic part where everything was going to spill out.
Definitely appreciated this episode so much for the way it was filmed looking like it was all done in one take. And to see this behind the scenes makes me even more amazed as to how it was achieved. Incredible teamwork by everybody.
I want to see the behind the scenes when they pan through the kids and then it goes into a circle and then they’re all adults. I want to see them all frantically switching places, trying not to bump into each other lol
I love watching these as I’m studying film and television and I’ve nearly finished my diploma and I’ve already made a few short films this year that I love watching this to see how professionals do it
This was one of the best episodes of any show ever. Just stunning. The series is perfection. I beg you to please continue with all involved in an anthology series.
When I read that the first scene of this episode (which ran for I think 15-16 minutes straight) was done in a one long shot, I was amazed more than I already am with this series! I mean, if you saw the scene that I'm talking about, there's a moment where Hugh is looking at and talking to his children - all in their younger version, then after the camera rolls back to him then back to his children, they all are in their present selves. All included in that one single shot that they did. Like, wow, the professionalism and dedication of both set of actors - the adult, more so the young ones - are impeccable! Not to mention the talent and precision of the whole production crew! Wow!
This better win some awards or i will riot lol. STUNNING work on this episode. I was having a hard time being scare cuz the cinematography was so impressive lol
When I watched this episode I immediately knew this had to be done in one take. I’m so glad there’s a follow up video explaining the process. Kick ass!!! Reminds me of the long take in children of men!
I didn't have much faith in it at the begining, but episode by episode it was just getting better and better. I thought that I'd be bored if they got deep in all the characters, wrong again, every character had it's own magic and play their part. And like this video, they really got my attention with this looong scenes, I was thinking "where is the cut? Did I miss it? They really did it in 1 take?"
All the actors performed so well in each episodes!! Im so amazed to see how great these little kids acted effortlessly..such a great cast and the direction and editing is phenomenal ❤️ I just wanted to see the same crew again for season 2🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🤗
This was one of the most incredible series of all times, full of motions, love, fear, philosophy, it’s perfect. I really can’t wait for what’s coming next, thank u Netflix
This was an amazing episode. I watched it twice in a row... Not only everything works on its own, but it's also an homage to Hitchcock's The Rope. There was also so many incredible tribute moments in the series to Kubrick & Stephen King that I'm really excited for Doctor sleep.
I didn't realize until halfway through this episode what they were doing with the long takes and when they lightbulb went on, my jaw hit the floor. Just as astonishing amount of effort to pull this off, and in a way that enhances the narrative and doesn't feel gimmicky
LittleBoxOfMe Same here. I’m forcing my husband to watch it so that I have an excuse to watch it again. I’m enjoying it even more the second time because the tension is gone and I’m discovering all of the little details and clues now that I have the whole story.
The kids deserve awards for their acting skills in this series. Absolutely phenomenal 👏👌🙌
Nell was great too considering it was her first serious acting gig.
Nell was the best young actor
Some of their acting was awful tbh.
I agree!
@Leonor de Lancastre e Távora I think they're talking about the kids because the comment literally says kids. 😅
One of the best TV episodes ever made. Just fantastic
I will NOT be person #667 to "like" this.
One of the best things ever created in general 🤷🏾♀️
true art
i need like a hour more of the behind the scenes
Same

Well said!!!
I cried so much!!!

*10/10 for this series,specially for episode 6.*

I can't tell you how much I loved this episode, it absolutely phenomenal.
Probably on the greatest episodes on television history.
I was so engrossed in the episode that it's just dawned on to me that it was Single shot. WTF!
While I was watching it was hard to concentrate on the plot. All I could think is, "God damn just have a cut already, this is absolutely insane."
Like that first scene was what? 12 minutes plus? The skill and the planning that takes is just mental.
Alexandre Parent id agree. Damn.
First cut of the episode is when the chandelier falls-which I think is 15 minutes in! So good--went back and watched the sequence multiple times! Such a achievement!!!
it didnt occur to me 12 minutes into the scene
Alexandre Parent the first scene was 15 minutes straight of no cuts. Absolute insanity
One of the best shows and best epidodes ever made by Netflix

Actually most of the scares weren’t jump scares, that’s what made them so good!
There were like 3 jump scares in the entire 10 hour series.

Carla: "Capture Lightning in a bottle. You just have to get it once.” I love that, I love Carla.
This episode was beyond amazing. I would watch a full documentary of all the behind the scenes action it took to get this single episode filmed.
i was watching this episode so deeply and like 5 minutes into it, i was like “wait wait holy shit... this is one shot” and the aspiring movie geek in me jumped out and i started like crying sort of like “omg they had to film this over 15 minute shot, everything is perfect and choreographed so neatly, the swiftness of the exchanges and pans so amazing. This was an incredible episode. The long takes definitely helped to ramp up the tension between the family and the dread of them wandering the house during the storm. And the last scene with Nell was just so heartbreaking.
Watched this episode last night, blew mine and my friends mind.
One of the greatest portrayals of grief! Very beautiful!
I was immediately reminded of the long take from True Detective season 1. In both instances, I felt like I was in the middle of the action and a part of the story. Brilliant film making.
Same director, another long sequence, on the superior new Netflix show Maniac.
th-cam.com/video/pqUTf2RYaOk/w-d-xo.html
I enjoyed Maniac as well. Cary Fukunaga is an exceptional director.
Episode 6 is just so astounding. I didn't even realize until watching the second time how much of the episode was one-shots. So impressed.
Definitely a surprising series I thought it was going to be another run of the mill haunting type thing but wow great job really good work.
Mike flannigan is a beast
Ikr... I'm glad I gave into the billboard advertisement.. there was something about it
This has seriously been an amazing episode to watch and rewatch and rewatch again. The effort, time, and care taken really paid off.
Incredible episode and achievement! Five minutes in I realized the continuous shot. I restarted the episode and focused on the difficult and wonderful work from the cast and crew. It was marvelous and terrifying!

1:21 so I wasn't insane, that statue actually did move it's head.
Caught that first time and had to rewind to make sure I was not going nuts x)
@@flecks_piano ikr, lol
I always knew something was up with the statues
I didn't notice it when i was watchin that episode 😫
I saw this episode and I kept marveling at the long shots... very, very impressive!
I was blown away once I realized it was a long one shot. It took me awhile to notice because of how engrossed I was.
this episode deserves an award
This scene blew me away...what an unbelievable effort
This show has got to be one of the best shows I've ever watched. Absolutely incredible!

I cried, I laughed, I was frightened, and terrified. I loved this series. Please more Netflix. And thank you so much.
Really one hell of a show. Best of the best. Waiting for season 2
Mike Flanagan, the crew and the cast members all deserve an award 👏👏👏👏
While watching this episode my mind was blown thinking how they could have filmed all of that. Good job to everyone that worked on it, especially the kids who are very promising actors.
Perfect cast! Perfect team! Carla Gugino is perfect.
Omg she really is!!! That is what I've been saying the entire time. I love Timothy Hutton as well but Carla, omg!
I'm really glad this show is doing amazing. Episode 6 deserves to be watched by everyone! Such outstanding work.
I love how each Character had an episode of their own and it dug into who they really were! 😭 This series won my heart! 😩
This is golden. Thank you! One of the best horror media I've seen and I still look for editing cuts on the 6th episode. It seems really unlikely. Bravo.
The series was so well casted, and the kids all did an outstanding job. Everyone on that set should be so proud, I take my hat off to them all!

This whole show was SO FRCKIN AMAZING I absolutely loved it!
The last episode is so emotional🤧 when nell explained that they have been inside the red room😭
Definitely appreciated this episode so much for the way it was filmed looking like it was all done in one take. And to see this behind the scenes makes me even more amazed as to how it was achieved. Incredible teamwork by everybody.
Who else is now obsessed with this show and just everything to do with itt?!
I just finished the last episode a few minutes ago...AND, I'm on a marathon. 😭 Everything that has something to do with the show, I'll watch!
I made a really cool comedy trailer for The Haunting of Hill House. Enjoy! th-cam.com/video/IGG5JornMrE/w-d-xo.html
One of the most Thrilling, scary, well written, beautiful and caprivating horror series to date. 🤗🤗🤗👏👏👏👏👏 . Congrats guys!
I want to see the behind the scenes when they pan through the kids and then it goes into a circle and then they’re all adults. I want to see them all frantically switching places, trying not to bump into each other lol
This is not regular tv shows, it's Peace of Art 💛 thank you Mike for this...
It was amazing! The long take shots were very dramatic and disorienting. You could feel the characters and what's on their minds.
I love watching these as I’m studying film and television and I’ve nearly finished my diploma and I’ve already made a few short films this year that I love watching this to see how professionals do it
this shot was so good i had to come look for this before i even finished the episode. thank you so much
This was one of the best episodes of any show ever. Just stunning. The series is perfection. I beg you to please continue with all involved in an anthology series.
Honestly one of the BEST episodes of television I've ever seen. What a series. So good.
Fantastic camera work, I really enjoyed it
Everything is PERFECT in this series and this episode was astonishing !
+ the kids are wonderful. I'm obsessed !
Mike Flannigan, You out did yourself! This was Briliiant!
this episode is brilliant
When I read that the first scene of this episode (which ran for I think 15-16 minutes straight) was done in a one long shot, I was amazed more than I already am with this series! We need a longer video on the behind the scenes for this episode.
This episode was absolutely amazing! Still can't believe it was pulled off... really incredible!
So far, without a doubt, this chapter is a masterpiece in the story of tv series. Bravo!!
This episode was by far my favorite. Everything was amazing.
This has the potential to be better then American horror story, I hope they can keep it going story wise because this season was outstanding
Spoiler alert: it is.
AHS has got nothing on this series.
Story wise nah, not if you get what it's about. Although it's wayyyyyy more fucking scary😂😩
Wait are you serious? I've tried to watch AHS about 10 times now and I always bail after a few episodes because it's so cringey and poorly-written.
I mean, this show is vastly superior than any season off AHS, and I'm speaking as a fan of both shows.
I was literally amazed by this episode
This is seriously one of the best series I have ever watched. Just amazing !!!!
BEST HORROR SHOW i'VE EVER SEEN
the last episode had me in tears. love this show so much.
I walked away from this episode thinking “I’ve never seen television like this.” It was THAT good.
They really did it in 1 take?"
one of the best episodes in the history of television
This is so good it makes me wanna cry of joy. This episode marked me. ART
That work really paid off cause Haunting of Hill House is definitely the best show I've seen in a while.
This was one of the most breathtaking episodes I've ever seen.
More stuff like this and less garbage pls thx
This was an amazing episode. I watched it twice in a row... Not only everything works on its own, but it's also an homage to Hitchcock's The Rope. There was also so many incredible tribute moments in the series to Kubrick & Stephen King that I'm really excited for Doctor sleep.

i hate horror usually but this show is so well made and i actually really enjoyed it
LittleBoxOfMe Same here. I’m forcing my husband to watch it so that I have an excuse to watch it again. I’m enjoying it even more the second time because the tension is gone and I’m discovering all of the little details and clues now that I have the whole story.

I have no words to describe how AMAZING this show is. Thank you SO MUCH 💕💕💕
