Back in the late 80's I found a 56 Imperial . The car was too far gone but it still ran quite well actually. I offered to buy the engine but the customer wanted the whole thing gone. I ended up dragging the big beast home , lol. I still have the 354 .

Never was a fan of Chrysler corporations "forward-look", but Chrysler corporation engineering was awesome during that era.

Steve my Aunt , my father's older sister, had a 56 Chrysler Windsor pink with white trim and top. My aunt drove that till she bought a 66 Chrysler New Yorker which my uncle drove for years then sold it to a guy who he worked with that drove it for years going on 200k miles. My parents bought a dark blue metallic with white trim and white top 57 Chrysler New Yorker which although was all new for 57 it was nicer looking but not as good a car as my aunt's 56. My mother liked the looks of the 57 and the push button drive but years later my father admits he should have bought a 57 Chevy instead in that we had all kinds of problems with that Chrysler. Drove from Dayton OH to Houston TX in Aug 58 when we moved to Houston. Hot as hell in an unairconditioned Chrysler which my father promptly traded for a 59 Plymouth Sport Suburban 9 passenger wagon with factory air. Eventually we became a Chevy family. Chrysler for 57 caught GM and Ford by surprise with Exners newly styled Chryslers for 57 which were beautiful but hastily rushing these cars to market with quality issues along with the Recession of 1958 caught up with Chrysler. Always look for the 57 and 58 Chryslers, Plymouths, Dodges, and Desotas at old car shows they are rare but are just beautiful cars. Lots of old Chevies and Mustangs but not a lot of the old 50s and early 60s Mopars and not a lot of the old Nashes and Ramblers.

Steve, always looking forward to new videos! I live about an hour North of Bernardston, I'm wondering if you've seen any early 60's Ford Fairlane's in the yard... I know it is a big place but, seeing if you have spotted any to give me a good reason to come down.
    Thanks!

Exner was recovering from his first heart attack in the hospital when the Andrea Doria went down. The story is Chrysler executives waited a few days to tell him so as not to induce a second and possibly fatal heart attack. One of the divers who went down the most on the Andrea Doria, who died a few years ago, actually found the remnants of the Norseman on one of his last dive, and said it was mostly gone.

As a kid I remember my great-grand mother's '56 Winsor. Proverbial "driven by a little old lady" car. Only driven to church and shopping by her. My father would take it on the highway to blow the carbon out during the summer. Fond memories!

  • @edsyphan3425
    @edsyphan3425 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Boy does this bring back memories. I had one of these as a kid. A hand me down from my dad. That thing rode like a cloud. But those brakes were only an inch or so wide and would get hot at the least provocation. The engine was powerful, but it had to push around a barge, so no racer for sure.

    Junkyard wars...
In 2002 I was a laid off airline pilot with a Porsche 928. I lived in Orlando, and my 928 had a cracked dashboard pod. I had nothing to do but send out resumes that day, so I took my '66 Ford F100 airport truck to a junkyard in Bithlo, Florida, east of Orlando to see if anything was there that I could use. It was a U-Pull it yard, so I brought my tool kit.
I didn't think I'd find anything, but I was bored but LO and BEHOLD what do I see? Not one but TWO 928's, axles up in the mud, and one had a ::cathedral music:: PERFECT INSTRUMENT POD!
Uhmm...These are NOT available from Porsche anymore, and aftermarket they were $400 back then and over $1000 now!
I ran back to the office and asked the owner of the yard what he wanted for it; He replied "Hmm. Shit. I dunno, like forty fucking bucks. But bring it in here first". I RAN back to the car and opened the door. Problem:
A three foot long rattlesnake was occupying the passenger floorboards, and he was intent on staying there....
A battered Volvo was next to the 928; The door rub strip was falling off, so I completed its journey to the ground and used it in a violent fashion to "convince" said reptile that departure via the partially open passenger door was a good idea~
I got my pod and that evening I installed it; I kept the old cracked pod despite selling the 928 three years ago. It's kind of a fun memento; I have no idea what became of the snake.
Interesting aside: The OTHER white 928 literally had it's paint peeling off. I was curious of this, and pulled a little more off. The 928 has a steel body but the hood, front fenders, and both doors are all aluminum. Yet, this 928 had paint peeling near the fuel door, and there was no rust. I tapped it and the body appeared to be made of aluminum. I ran this across people on Rennlist, the Porsche enthusiast website a few years ago and there were TWO 928's made for competition only with full aluminum bodies at ridiculous cost and nobody knows where they went....

Hello Dug Gid, sorry to hear about your local junkyard's fire. I've seen burned cars and the metal even suffers. Not much can be done after metal is heated so high that it warps or stiffens. A sad thing. I know baseball legend Reggie Jackson had a couple of tragic (for the cars) fires in his collection decades ago. Hemis, Camaros, etc all went to smoke. As for a Jeepster / Commando video, I'll do one as soon as I can find one in the bone yard...they're RARE. Thanks for watching and writing, Steve Magnante

Center Plain brakes had two wheel cylinders "an upper and a lower" per brake drum, it was a "Chrysler Corporation only" is was for more stopping with out power brakes. Problem was, the wheel cylinder were more prone for seizing, leaking and corroding due to the small amount of movement "1/2 movement" that of standard brake wheel cylinders, they were also difficult to adjust. Something about the Chrysler Ghia connection. Chrysler executives found out they could have a car custom built in Italy for one tenth the cost of having the same thing built by union labor in Detroit. This was in 1951. For more than ten years they had their show cars built in Italy but the designs all originated in Detroit. Another advantage of the Italian coachbuilders was that they could work from a few dimensions and perspective drawings, it was not necessary to create a full set of blueprints. This could save a lot of time.
It would be more accurate to say Ghia copied Chrysler designs, rather than Chrysler depended on Ghia designs. For an example see the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia which debuted in 1956 and compare to the Chrysler show cars of 1952-54.

I had two Windsor 4 door sedans and a New Yorker St. Regis 2 door hardtop in the late 1970’s. They weren’t running and I didn’t have the money to get them running. The New Yorker had a blown rear axle, the previous owner thought it was a hot rod. One of the Windsors was our family car when I was little.

When i was 14 my best friends dad was a Jalopy, Descruction Derby aficionado. He had a 56 Windsor in his backyard that he decided to turn into a 'Race Car'. Car was beautiful, black with a red top. We prepped it (cut out fenders, took out lenses and glass) and took it to the race track a week later. It kicked butt and almost won. A cheap shot by its last competitor took out the battery ( that we should have moved to the trunk) and killed it. Straight to the junk yard the next day. What a waste of a beautiful car.....different times.

The exterior paint is possibly code "8" Turquoise exterior paint. There was a 1958 Windsor running around my neighborhood. I'm pretty sure the guy that used to own it is the guy that used to drop by and linger around my house and pester my dad as he worked on his 1941 Plymouth Deluxe. I made an offer but he said no not at this time. I waited about about 6 months and bought it for $ 500 bucks. It took about a week to get it running drove it for a year or so then the 354 let go. sold the horn ring for $500 and the rest of the car for $1500. Wish I had pulled the Hemi and trans oh well

Hello Jupitermustangmike, yes indeed, old coins found in old cars! I've never scored BIG on this count but did discover a 1950-s silver Roosevelt dime in a 1951-ish Nash Airflyte at Rambler Ranch in Elizabeth, Colorado during a Roadkill's Junkyard Gold video shoot. Like the good boy I am, I made sure I handed it to the owner of the collection. Another old coin / old car event on Roadkill's Junkyard Gold was when I "discovered" a 1909-S VDB penny in a Studebaker Wagonaire. Truth be told, I brought it along with me and planted it into the car. When I "discovered" it, I played dumb and made sure to show the camera the "S" and "VDB" real close. My plan was to see if any TV viewers would notice the rare coin......NOTHING. No response to the "comments" on the Motor Trend On Demand site. Oh well, we know about old car and old coins and how they often go together! Thanks for writing, Steve Magnante
