A 1956 automobile with power windows, power seats and factory a/c....to most younger folks this might not seem impressive, but at that time it was simply amazing and so exceedingly rare to have these ultra modern and expensive options...never fails to amaze me...because as a youngster in the 50s, you just plain never saw it...nice job lou!
Hi Daniel, Happy to read you appreciate all the "options" on this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing with the younger Viewers what they are actually seeing, Lou
That is actually after market air conditioning. It is mounted the same way that Chrysler factory Air Temp was and looks to use the Chrysler style air scoops.
@@dicarlo57kindly remove the silver spoon from your mouth! In 1956, it was rare to see power windows and seats, even in luxury brand automobiles. Factory air conditioning was installed in only about ten percent of all cars, encluding Cadillac, Lincoln, Imperial and Packard. You must not have been around then, I was and I do know what I am talking about, unlike you.

I'm a huge fan of the first 300 but, man, this New Yorker just oozes luxury and elegance. The two tone black and gray paint is beautiful. Chrysler really had it going on with these cars, then they did the Virgil Exner forward look cars that wowed the marketplace. Great car, Lou!
Very nice Chrysler -survivors are always fun to see. The calmer colour (compared to other 1950s cars) gives this a stately and mature road presence. Thanks Lou and Harvey!
Hi Jeff, Been on a "Survivor" roll lately. Interesting when you see one car, it seems like the other like it come out too. My pleasure sharing with you, and I appreciate your support. You're welcome, Lou
Yet another great Survivor! This Chrysler looks fantastic in these colors & interior trim, and much like today, the Rothman's can't go too far without meeting more admirers. Thanks for finding and sharing this '56 with us, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Seems I'm on a "Survivor" roll. Interesting when you find one, the other Survivors seem to come out too. You're welcome, Lou
In my opinion, the last of the BEST Chryslers. These cars were so elegant and this one is a perfect example. The 1957 Chryslers looked too much like Dodges/Plymouths/DeSotos. But up until 1957, they were grand. This is a great example. Love it. Love the color. Always learn something from your videos. I was shocked to see Newport on the car! But he explained it. I have definitely heard of a St. Regis...but I bet there was more to it and than just paint! the first car I've ever seen that has TWO CLOCKS - in the Steering Wheel and the passenger side! Exhaust sound was divine! Thanks Lou!!!
Love it when you find the guys/gals who will spend both time and money to preserve these cars. And you found another one. I feel the same way about Fords as he does about Chrysler, which is fine, still a great find. Keep it up.
Another wunnerful car Larry.. In this Exner period every Chrysler had a number of trim choices, from this car's single side spear to the multi-level trim and paint options. 1951 was the first Chrysler Hemi. This is the first after-market a/c I've seen that mimics the factory Airtemp units.
Hi, Lou! "I feel special!" Yep, and I'm sure Cheryl would have said the same back in 1956! There's no shortage of cool features on this car: the fins, the griffin emblems, the clock in the steering wheel, the pushbutton transmission, the Highway Hi-Fi, and even the signature on the firewall! (My thought was maybe that was one of the workers on the assembly line showing pride in his work.) Could those Twin Tower taillights have inspired the World Trade Center? BTW, I spotted another old Chrysler coming through at 11:41. Looks to me like a 1970 300 convertible. Also, Chrysler's first Hemi engine was introduced in 1951. Thank you, Lou, Harvey and Cheryl for being our chauffeurs on this smooth ride through Carlisle!
Hi iswc27, Happy to read "There's no shortage of cool features on this car:" :-) Glad to be chauffeured in this car and be able to share with you. You're welcome, Lou
This Chrysler with those options was rare even when new. That it survived intact is a miracle. To see a 1956 Chrysler (a Windsor convertible, not a New Yorker) put through its paces, look at the opening of the movie Julie (1956) with Doris Day and Louis Jourdan. Doris is driving and Jourdan gets in the car and mashes the gas pedal to the floor and they drive down twisty roads at top speed. Thanks, Lou, for featuring this beautiful car.
Beautiful New Yorker! Love the front end and the unique AC in the trunk! In my youth I was a Chevy guy but your videos have opened my eyes to Chrysler!
Mom went to two brother doctors one delivered two of my cousins . Each guy had a Chrysler of this vintage . They came from cattle country in eastern Oregon. Richard and Elwood Lyman. Both on staff of Alta Bates hospital in Berkeley. Cars: one was a black and one was a blue and silver two tone .😮 both went to colleges in Oregon and WA from memory, both did some work in youth and high school sports.
Grew up it by Baker Oregon. Nicest doctors I ever met. Mom was sick with heart issues so I camped out in waiting room far too often and too many hours.

Fins were going to get bigger, engines were gonna get even larger, push-button transmissions were going to proliferate, particularly at Chrysler....and yet, this car, and others from that year, had some of the older styling cues, from the early 1950s,,,particularly the rather bulbous body styles, the expansive interiors with the maximum headroom, etc. The later 1950s were gonna get very "out there" for a few years...and as a kid, I loved it!
Chrysler, at this point in time, was about to be the major trendsetter among the Big Three, with their futuristic, space-age influenced styling on their cars...As a kid then, I could feel that our society was becoming more progressive, and had a positive, even patriotic attitude going on in the USA...we had won that horrible WW2, my parents generation was beginning to earn a future for themselves, things were getting better in general--and the space-race certainly influenced our culture in different, mostly positive ways. This channel is the best on TH-cam. You bring the personal stories behind the car owners and their car. Anyone can show cars but you put the personal touch to each story.
Did you notice how thick the seat backs are?! I imagine they are as comfortable as an easy chair. Beautifully designed car with an understated elegance.
Hi Delray, You're right, when I was sitting in this car, it's very comfortable. Happy to read "Beautifully designed car with an understated elegance." :-) Lou
Great 5 star video and a wonderful car My farther had one just like this one and yes it ran great ,ours had the self seeking radio with the seeking button on the floor, I remember changing plugs and setting the duel points on this engine. 😊😊😊

My grandfather used to call those front bumpers ( on some Plymouths too) "Shin diggers" because they stuck out far enough to rap you in the legs when servicing them! Great car, highly optioned!
Wow..just, WOW! That's a seriously CLASSY old "boat"!! The Mopar styling dept. guys definitely had it "nailed", in the mid-fifties!! WAY ahead of any offerings (in terms of pure "road-presence") from equivalent Ford or GM full-sizers during that era, I.M.H.O!!
Such a beautiful, classy car, and a very nice couple. I enjoy seeing them as they looked back in their day. Nice to also hear the revs and the growl of the exhaust note!
This is a stunning car. When I was a very young child, our neighbor had this exact car in white and dark green. Almost didn't forgive him when he traded it for a 1967 Cadillac. Just couldn't compare with the Chrysler!
Wow! A beautiful survivor! This Chrysler Bew Yorker is in pristine condition. That has to be one of the first cars that I've seen that has the air conditioning unit in the trunk. The only flaw I noticed was the front seat was well worn. The 354 CI Hemi sounded healthy. This has to be the first video I've seen you in where you ride in the back seat due to the owner's wife riding shotgun. What a true classic Mopar Lou!
Hi Michael, Happy to read "Wow! A beautiful survivor! This Chrysler Bew Yorker is in pristine condition" :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
I think the grill design on the New Yorker looks more refined than the grills on the Windsdor and 300B. All three share the same body design, but I like the New Yorker best. Another great video, Lou, thanks.
Absolutely stunningly beautiful survivor Chrysler! These cars were so far ahead of their time for the day. Some of the best engineering and style - "PowerStyle" by Virgil Exner. Great content as always featuring unique and beautiful cars. Thanks Lou
Beautiful car Lou. My grandpa bought a pink and white one for my grandma. It had air conditioning also with power windows and brakes and steering the first car they owned that had all those goodies. It was parked by the barn for some reason. I'm guessing something went wrong with it and it was replaced with a 1962 Cadillac Fleetwood 4 door hardtop which I now own.
A lot of people born in the last 50 years who aren’t car buffs don’t realize how “fully loaded” this fully loaded Chrysler is. In 1956, air conditioning was still an extremely expensive option, if it was even available at all on many cars. But everything else on that car we take for granted today: power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seat…… to a lot of people in ‘56 this car would be just a dream. Most cars still had manual steering and certainly no power windows or air conditioning.

Beautiful New Yorker. Perfect everything. Did not know about the Newport option. Very cool. This car is the same age as me, however it fared much better than I over the years.
Love this video! This very highly optioned '56 NYer looks to be wearing its original paint, and with its beautiful original fabric and leather interior and drivetrain, truly qualifies this as a survivor, as mentioned in other comments. Another indicator that this is an unmolested car is the perfect sideview alignment of the rear bumper on up thru the taillights - rarely seen this perfect on '56 Chryslers that have been redone. Would have been interesting to read the dates and info on the collection of 5 Valvoline oil change stickers still on the rear inner lefthand door. 'Newport' models for '56 signified hardtop - either 2-door or 4-door cars. As noted, St. Regis models were tri-tone 2-door hardtops offered in white with two other colors - red/black, pink/black, blues, greens. '56 was the first year of Chrysler's pushbutton transmission controls, found in the dash's left corner, operating the PowerFlite 2-speed automatic transmission. The 354 Hemi engine with single 4-barrel Carter carb here puts out 280 horsepower, compared to the '56 300-B, also with the 354 Hemi with inline dual 4-barrel Carter WCFB carbs, producing 340 hp, with an optional 355 hp version, that is thought to have been run only by Carl Kiekhaefer in his NASCAR campaigning of these 300-Bs. This car wears the 'Standard' Two-Tone paint combination, compared to drawings you show in the brochure showing extra cost 'Special' Two-Tone color schemes. In addition to the a/c vents on the rear package shelf, we see the rear radio speaker there in the center. And we see the Town & Country 'Electro-Touch' radio's foot station selection button, near the high beam headlight button. Interesting to note that power steering was optional on this NYer. Power seats and windows also optional here. Also as mentioned in another comment, I've not seen the aftermarket Novi a/c system instead of the factory AirTemp a/c system - wonder if this Novi unit was replaced at a later date after the original factory unit failed - looking at all the venting and plumbing seen here.
Ahoy to my big brother Lou! What an EPIC video and review, man. On this Labor Day I am sitting here in my tubesocked stocking feet, sweatpants pulled up to my knees (as always) and a Black Sabbath tee shirt on (sorry Mom! She used to get freaked out 🤣🤪) and my grey floppy DC sneakers, which were by the door, literally rose up and flew out, man🤪🤪! No doubt those boys are flying to Carlisle, PA in the hopes of having the honor of being hung from the rearview mirror of this gorgeous New Yorker!! If only for a moment, man-what an honor that would be! For those floppy baseball boys and for JV Johnny. I think our Dad Harvey would get a chuckle outta that! No doubt. Mom is adorable just peering over the side, and I love how you spoke so respectfully to her as you showcased this interior. What a survivor! The color (just like my grey DC's😂) and all that chrome, that huge eagle just looking for a rabbit, those guillotine-like back windows-love it! And those awesome older folks as her caretaker, just a great story! I hope you are relaxing this Labor Day, Lou! Maybe in a pair of flip-flops and a Florida keys shirt in honor of Jimmy Buffet, RIP🥲. I'll stay in my stockin' feet, Lou. Thanks big bro, JV Johnny ⚾⚾
Hey JV Johnny, Sitting back having a snack and reading / replying to the fun comments from this car. Happy to read this one keeps you in stockin" feet :-) You're welcome, Lou

I have seen this car closeup at Gartlis in Ocala Florida. Their trailer was parked next ours. Nice Folks as well! I believe he won the Garlits Choice Award That year (2020). Very interesting car that got lots of attention!
'56 Chrysler...sculptured steel. Did not know difference of Newport and St. Regis models. Factory AC to boot! Let's take it to the polls to vote for Eisenhower, then on to Howard Johnson for some ice cream!
I remember seeing those twin tower tail lights as a 4 year old, Parked in a garage, and owned by a widow ed old lady can’t believe it fit in the garage but it did. It was pink!!!
That must be the last remaining Chrysler from this era that has an aftermarket air conditioner! The Chrysler air temp unit had those scoops, but it had a central air discharge outlet in the middle of the back shelf, and instead of the controls here there was one built into the dashboard. I bet it was great in the summer back then to be driving around with the windows up! Beautiful car.
I was given one of these by my father, it really did float silently along. One of my favorite things was the dash at night. One odd thing, it was a New Yorker, but it had the radio delete?

The air conditioning is after-market. There was a similar factory "Air-Temp" available. A friend, who also had a 1955 Chrysler 300, inherited a 1956 Imperial, with a wrecked front end . All he could find was a 1956 New Yorker front end(the Imperial front end was the same as the 300 front end, 1955-6), so that's what he put on. It was still a cool car with full power options. Because it was an Imperial, it had Chrysler's new 3-speed Torque-flite automatic, which became available in the middle of 1956. It also had the Imperial's "gun-sight" tail lamps. The 300 was relegated to a road trip car and the Imperial was the new daily driver.
A very handsome car, Lou. The "outrigger" front bumper is truly awesome looking, but I wonder if people didn't catch it on the side of the garage pulling in or out. My mother was bad enough with a plain old Chevy with a more conventional bumper. The tail fins are great also. These fins are quite tasteful. This was before they became ridiculous over the next couple of years.
Hi Jesse, Happy to read you appreciate the looks of this "handsome" car :-) Glad to read this one brings back memories of your Mother Chevy too. Nice precise camera work, super fine Sir-vivor * Can that be original paint? Some people refer to their cars as a survivor, and say, "but it had one repaint", my guess - original * Compliments go to the V. Exner Chrysler design team, they sure had their ideas honed-in '55 onward * The '56 Lincoln is in its own league on the build end, but just on design the Chrysler would not look too shabby next to the same year Lincoln; with a price tag of $10 grand$$ vs Crysler at about $3,850, thnx LC and owners. . . :>/
Hi, If you like this video, please click on SUPER THANKS ❤ with the $ in the middle which is the SUPER THANKS button under the video. Thank you! Lou

That is actually after market air conditioning. It is mounted the same way that Chrysler factory Air Temp was and looks to use the Chrysler style air scoops.
That aftermarket ac system was the system that Mercedes bought and used in their cars into the 1970s.
Only if those around you at the time were so impoverished as to be restricted to low level Chevys and Plymouths.
@@dicarlo57kindly remove the silver spoon from your mouth! In 1956, it was rare to see power windows and seats, even in luxury brand automobiles.
Hi BIGBADWOOD, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Fathers car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

My grandfather used to call those front bumpers ( on some Plymouths too) "Shin diggers" because they stuck out far enough to rap you in the legs when servicing them! Great car, highly optioned!
Hi Adam, I think your Grandfather is right about the bumper that is a "Shin digger" :-) Lou
Fins were just right on this car ...not too big , not too gaudy, beautiful car !!!
Hi Peter, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Wow..just, WOW! That's a seriously CLASSY old "boat"!! The Mopar styling dept. guys definitely had it "nailed", in the mid-fifties!! WAY ahead of any offerings (in terms of pure "road-presence") from equivalent Ford or GM full-sizers during that era, I.M.H.O!!
High praise.
Such a beautiful, classy car, and a very nice couple. I enjoy seeing them as they looked back in their day. Nice to also hear the revs and the growl of the exhaust note!
Hi Jeff, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this "classy car" :-) Glad to read you enjoy the nice couple too, Lou
This is a stunning car. When I was a very young child, our neighbor had this exact car in white and dark green. Almost didn't forgive him when he traded it for a 1967 Cadillac. Just couldn't compare with the Chrysler!
Hi Tom, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your neighbors car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
That's a great car! I would love to own it! Another fantastic video! Thanks, Lou! My car story is one of the absolute best!!
Hi Jon, Happy to read "That's a great car!" :-) I appreciate the kind words on "My car story is one of the absolute best!!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Hi Mighty Lonesome, Happy to read you enjoy the design on the front of this car. My pleasure sharing this car with you. You're welcome, Lou
Absolutely stunningly beautiful survivor Chrysler! These cars were so far ahead of their time for the day. Some of the best engineering and style - "PowerStyle" by Virgil Exner. Great content as always featuring unique and beautiful cars. Thanks Lou
Hi Gary, Happy to read "Absolutely stunningly beautiful survivor Chrysler!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Fabulous fabulous.
NICE!
Hi PlymouthDuster225, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Grandmas car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
This was the first official year of the Forward Look by Virgil Exner. The best engineering and style that made GM and Ford suddenly outdated.
Hi Richard, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou

Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Glad to read you and this car have the same birth year 55points.
Hi Noel, Happy to read "Love this video" :-) Enjoy reading your comment and getting the opportunity to learn more. Thank you for sharing, Lou
Worth watching the video just to see those rear windows go down.
Nice :-)
Nice 🥰
:-)
Yes, the 392 hemi was popular with drag racers until the 426 came along

What a great old car. Love the color too.
Happy to read you enjoy this "great old car" and in a color you love too :-)
Incredibly nice, and such a classic. Ideal powerplant too - the iconic 354 HEMI! And, I have never seen a clock in a steering wheel! How unusual!
Hi Claiborne, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) The clock on the steering wheel is special to see. Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
What a nice looking car, better looking than a 56 chevy.
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
5 lbs of R12; you could hang meat in there. Great car, thank you all
"5 lbs of R12; you could hang meat in there" NICE!
Beautiful, beautiful car. The 55-56 Chryslers and DeSotos were some of the best Chrysler ever made.

I have seen this car closeup at Gartlis in Ocala Florida. Their trailer was parked next ours. Nice Folks as well!
I believe he won the Garlits Choice Award That year (2020). Very interesting car that got lots of attention!
Hi Gerald, Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
'56 Chrysler...sculptured steel. Did not know difference of Newport and St. Regis models. Factory AC to boot! Let's take it to the polls to vote for Eisenhower, then on to Howard Johnson for some ice cream!
Hi Rob, Happy to read "sculptured steel" :-) I'm ready for ice cream! Lou
I remember seeing those twin tower tail lights as a 4 year old, Parked in a garage, and owned by a widow ed old lady can’t believe it fit in the garage but it did. It was pink!!!
Hi Sam, Happy to read this car brings back memories of those twin tower tail lights :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Hi LoveIsAll, Thank you for sharing the details you notice. My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou

Hi Automated Electronics, Thanks for sharing your Friends car story, Lou
Exner Chrysler design team, they sure had their ideas honed-in '55 onward * The '56 Lincoln is in its own league on the build end, but just on design the Chrysler would not look too shabby next to the same year Lincoln; with a price tag of $10 grand$$ vs Crysler at about $3,850, thnx LC and owners. . . :>/
Hi Dr Candor, Happy to read you appreciate the camera work on this "Sir-vivor" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Why don’t the wipers park all the way down?
Hmmm, not sure.
lou i’m schocked you didn’t knowe those were ac vents
....Dan, sometimes when I'm looking at a car like this, I don't remember my own name :-)
@@loucostabile my grandpa had a 55 buick with ac same set up
Super Duper
:-)
I see it has Florida plates was it driven up to Pennsylvania? If it was that's really incredible!
I assume it was trailered but it would be impressive if he drove it up.
@@JeffKing310 I assumed it was trailered as well but I just thought it would have been fun to mention it
Hmmm, I'm not sure as I didn't ask if it was driven or trailored.
💕👍 🤠
:-)
I been married to the same women for 42 years. Does that make me a survivor?
YES !
Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis had a 56 red convertible in one of their movies
Thank you for sharing.
Is this in Carlisle PA?
Yes.
