- Chrysler’s “fuselage age” begins right here. With its aircraft inspired body sections, passengers got extra shoulder room. But the big news was how the larger trunk could handle EIGHT suitcases! Could the world ever be the same?
My grandpa sold MOPARS from 1946-1977 & when he died in 1979 I inherited his 1972 Newport with the 400 ✌💖☮
There’s no way Steve’s channel does not hit 1 million subs by next year. So much fascinating information for gearheads young and old. All of his videos are so much fun to watch, learn, and reminisce. My first car was a 1968 300. I had that same brochure he held up. Inside, the tagline for the 300 was, “The only parking problem you’re going to have is not wanting to.” Loved that car, but the fuselage 300 was just as cool, and perhaps a bit cooler.

My parents owned a 1970 Chrysler Newport four door hardtop with a 383 Torqueflight. It was a medium green with a black vinyl top and greenish/gold interior. What a really nice car that was! Smooth, powerful, reliable - a total delight to drive. Unfortunately, it was totaled by an almost identical gold colored '70 Newport hardtop when my Mom accidentally pulled out in front of the elderly man driving the other Newport. Neither driver was hurt, but both cars were totaled, and I don't think the old man ever drove again after that.
In 1968, my junior year in high school, my dad bought a 1968 Newport. It was a beautiful gold with a black vinyl top, 383 2bbl with no AC. What a great car that was!
My dad had a 69 Newport. Bought it new. 383 4bbl. Learned to drive and went for my driver’s test with it also! Good memories for sure.
Not sure what model year Newport it was, in the summer of 1975 my girlfriend's family and I, seven of us total, piled in to it and drove to Florida on vacation. From Central Pennsylvania to, eventually Kew West, with stops at Disney World, Miami, and a couple other places lost in the memory bank.

I pulled a 440 out of one in the late 80s. It was a 69 Newport sedan. It was rusted horribly. The 440 went into my 65 Plymouth Belvedere II hartop.
Steve, you're bringing back a lot of great memories. I carpooled with a guy while working at the Chrysler Engineering center who owned a '71 New Port 4-door in the early 70s & what a roomy, comfortable car. It would literally float down I-94 & I-75. During the first gas crunch in '73 with a 55-mph speed limit, he said he averaged almost 20 mpg. Not bad for a big C-body.
The fuselage look was a beautiful design.

My grandmother had a 67 Chrysler Newport that she drove for almost 20 years with a 383, the car was really nice.
I owned a, 1967 Chrysler Newport, with a 440, 4 bbl, Headers,
and the 727 torque flight transmission, in 1988!
I was,the announcer at, Miami Hollywood Motorsports park, owned by the Moroso family at the time!
I purchased the car from one of the, Pro ET class drivers for 300$ !
The car was painted Hemi orange, and it rode like you were on a cloud!
It never left me stranded anywhere! No one wanted it because it was so huge!
I got good gas mileage
as long as I drove it
like I had good sense!
That said,I never did find the top end on it, but at 120 mph it had plenty more! It barely sounded like it was working very hard at all! Slowing down however, took a while!
After lifting ,I probably could have coasted from, West Palm beach to Miami!
That car was Amazing! You could also fit a baseball team in the trunk!
Not really but it was more than adequate!

The top speed wasn’t surprising considering that two-three years later a police package Fury with the 440 set a top speed record of over 140 that took years to match or break. Great story to add flavor to Steve’s morning nostalgia.

Thanks for watching and writing. I worked as Technical Editor at Hot Rod magazine from late 1997 to early 2005 and early on got assigned to cover the Hot Rod magazine NMCA drag racing series. One trip took me to Moroso Motor Sports Park where I proceeded to get an unholy sun burn photographing the race cars on the starting line. My scalp blistered and I STILL HAVE two of the scars on my head! Doctor says "not melanoma" but I still have these cherished mementos from Moroso! Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

Back in the late '80s living in Daytona (from Rhode Island) I did a "track day" at Miami/Hollywood. We got checked out/tested in Ford Escorts with full cages. This was an offshoot of Brand's Hatch in England. Then we drove Euro-versions of Formula Fords;(left hand shifting). For someone who drag raced motorcycles for most of my life and with doing aerobatics in a T-6 Texan it was a big highlight.Dug the shit out of it. So sad when these places close.

That particular style of 13" clad wheel debuted on the Ford Tempo GL/GLX for the 1985 model year only, A year later for 1986 the Tempo L/GL/LX went to a 14" standard wheel and that smaller 13" clad wheel moved to the Ford Escort GL/LX line for '86,'87 and early 1988. The Mercury Topaz had a different 13" clad design for 1985 and moved as well to a 14" wheel in 1986.

My neighbor in 1969 had one of these in triple green. When they first came out in the fall of 1968, Chrysler cars were, for me, the most advanced looking car on the road. I rode in that beautiful Chrysler back in September 1969 and remember it quite well. My 1977 Cougar XR-7 and my many 9th generation Thunderbirds have those poly cast wheels.
Oh yeah these were beautiful on the cougar with the red center cap if I remember correctly.

Back in the 80’s, our local service station had a big old Newport like this as their “service loaner” which my buddy was driving one New Year’s Eve while his regular car (at this time it would have been an ‘86-ish Buick Skylark) was in for repair. If anyone ever asks you how many drunk college students fit into a Fuselage-era Mopar fullsize, tell them, “A LOT!”……….😂
Around this same time, his little brother was driving a tiny imported Chevy (can’t remember what GM called it - maybe Sprint?) that happened to get side-swiped from front-to-back along the passenger side of the car - completely destroying the sheet metal - which he was terrified to let his surgeon father find out about! His “solution” to this problem was simply to park the car in front of their house in such an orientation that the passenger side of the vehicle was always oriented away from view as his dad pulled into the driveway! I want to say he got away with this routine for the better part of a year, and I never quite understood how a man who was a very successful doctor could be bamboozled by such a simple scheme for such a long period of time!
As a kid from a blue collar family, this was one of my first “windows” into how people who are incredibly successful professionally and/or financially can be absolute train wrecks in their day-to-day personal lives……..😮

Bet his father knew all along and just figured the son learned his lesson and had to live with it. Probably snickered and grinned about it from time to time. Al least that’s what I would have done to my kid. Kinda rubbed his nose in it in a good way.

I'm old enough to remember when vinyl tops were considered a luxury touch. I was always told to be wary of them because they trap water and cause the roof to rust underneath. Based on this car, I'd say that advice was spot on.

Friend had one in late seventy’s that he used for well pump service, removed back seat and cut out all the metal webbing between trunk and rear seat, put plywood over to have flat floor. You could lay eight foot pipes etc in it and shut trunk!! Had to really beef up rear springs to carry weight. Worked good till he could afford pickup👍
Around 1998, I bought a '69 Newport base 4dr sedan, Spinnaker white with cloth aqua interior, 383 2 bbl, A/C, drum brakes... and 16,900 original miles. Garaged it's whole life, a time capsule cream puff. Wish I still had it.
Oh yeah, mom and dad had a 71 new yorker. I remember sitting in a yellow 71 roadrunner with white interior, on the showroom floor. Cool memories.
Had a 72 newport 4dr sedan dark blue no vinyl top 400. Loved that car!

My Mopar story---- had a '69' new yorker,,,,green,clean,,440 mag sleeper..could smoke tires anytime,,full electric,,,so cool!...tnx,pat,,land o' lakes,wi.

I purchased a 1966 Newport with 383 to put in my 1968 charger 383 car. I drove the Newport for six months was a good driving car.

I owned a 1971 Newport coupe, it was a huge car especially in the engine bay. Mine was a 360 2bbl small block and you could stand in between the radiator and the front of the motor, changing spark plugs was much easier with all the room you had on the sides of it. Car was super comfortable. It had a 3.28:1 one legger. Seems like 9 to 12mpg what I remember about it. It was a really good car.
I've spent far too many days crawling around and under 60s Chrysler C-Body's in junkyards. I wonder how many engines my friends and I have pulled out of them over the last 45 years, it's got to be 10 or 12, same for sure grips. We used to grab the nice long driveshafts, perfect for shortening, the giant radiators and other tasty bits. Now when I actually see a decent one, especially a 2dr hardtop, all I can think about is rescuing it and getting it back in fightin' condition.

Steve i had a 69 newport . 383 . I put a 4 barrel and dual exhaust. great power. it was one of the best cars ive owned. Great handling.
You also got the benefit of running it on Regular as the 383 2barrel was a lower compression engine.

Loved the fuselage styling of the late 60’s and early 70’s, also loved that dark metallic green color of the ‘69 in the catalog. I think that’s about my favorite standard MoPar color until you get into the far out hot colors on the muscle cars.
My high school drive's ed class had the same car, i learned to drive on one of those ,it was dark green with a black vinyl top .

never had a 69 but at least 5 of the 70-72 year newport ,they sold for $50-$200 and the $50 one was a red w black interior coupe with 383 and "shackles" to get the rear suspension raised for towing or ? ,but it was a legend with that full wrap around chrome bumper /grill ,after can opening 5 parked cars and one literal head on with a 72 lemans it started up and got us out of there ,like a BOSS ! lol -long story and no fatalities so ...bravo NEWPORT CUSTOM !!

back in 1975, at 17 years old , i bought a 69 newport. 383 ci 4 barrel, what a car it was, down the highway smooth as silk, very nice and enjoyable car. plus you could haul 6 people easily

Well Chrysler did have a "A Body Car" in 1971. It was in Australia, Chrysler Valiant Charger 6 cylinder Hemi. The E49 265 Hemi made 302 horsepower 320 foot pound torque.. I wish we could have had them in the 70's..

I believe the wagons had an even wider rear axle but those big C body wagons were great at trailer towing.
9:12 Regarding the urathane Clad wheel, they still do something similar today: Chrome Clad Wheels.
They Glue a (chrome look) plastic wheel cover to an aluminum wheel.
I think my 2014 Ram pickup has those cheap-ass chromed plastic wheel covers glued to the rims. When you're standing there looking at them, they're pretty. But when you touch them and find out they're plastic, your bubble gets bursted.
I love Chryslers from this time period...
Had a sedan in white with turquoise interior, 383 2Bbl. It had a 2.76 rear axle. Took a while to get up a head of steam but would peg the speedo at 120 and just float along.
Great video. In the late 90s, my high school ride was a '67 Newport 2 door. Red with peeling white vinyl top. She was a beauty. There was one other Mopar in the parking lot. A 68 Charger with a 318. Of course the kid that owned it claimed it was a 350 horsepower monster. He hated when the 383 2bbl Newport would easily walk away from that Charger on the way to nearby baseball games. He was two grades ahead of me and started a rumor that my car had a 500 horse 440 to justify his imaginary horsepower.
In 1970, my father bought a ‘69, or it might have been a’70, Plymouth Sport Suburban station wagon, completely optioned out and with a mighty 383 Magnum 4 bbl under the hood. Great kid carrier, I remember it even had the reverse facing jump seat in the back, great to hang your feet out of on the way to the country. 😜🇨🇦👍

When I was growing up my father had a 1968 Newport Custom that was a turquoise color. In 1971 he bought a 1971 Newport that was yellow. Back in the early 70's pretty much all Chrysler cars had a vinyl top. The trunk on the 71 Newport was huge. The problem with the large trunk lid is that it did not really seal all that well. I remember laying in the trunk while he sprayed the car with a hose to find out where it was leaking. It turned out that it would seal well when the car was not moving, but when it was going down the road in a rainstorm it would flex enough to allow water to get into the trunk.
70 newport 440 , use to keep chunks of 2x4 in trunk , torsion bars would break all the time, jack it up toss a chunk in and bash your way back to the junk yard for parts. had fun chasing cows in the fields to get them back to the barn. but the 69 gto was best for that sitiing on a milk crate

I guess you could call the B pillar in a hardtop a "Lower case B"!!!! Pontiac's Honeycomb wheels are the first Polycast wheels I know of and probably the most famous. And everyone wants to call Pontiac's later Snowflake wheel, which is all aluminum, the Honeycomb wheel. For a Pontiac guy that's aggravating😂
Lol i was just thinking the other day of you doing a new port but calling it ....Any Newport in a Storm.... but it would have to be raining... my dad had a 70 four door and a 71 2 door they were beautiful cars but the seats in the 71 were itchy in the summer it had no air.
Some 10+ years ago I had a chance to took an incredible ride in a '72 Newport 4 door.
Amongst my smaller & hotter Mopars I also had a few of the C-body barges. In `77 I bought a `68 Newport 4dr sedan, then a year later a `70 Newport Custom 2dr hardtop w/fac rally wheels etc & even a `71 New Yorker 2dr Hardtop w/440.
Hi Steve I know you complain about the dog making noises but we don't even hear them on this side of the TV it's quite quiet so don't complain so much about the dog barking it really doesn't disturb us on this end keep up the great videos I always enjoy watching you and your videos wish I was there next to you sometimes LOL take care sir.

Seeing the "POWER DISC BRAKES" reminded me of when I was first driving, having to be carful, not to apply the "clutch" on my dads Chrysler 300, versus our 64 Corvair or the result could be disastrous. ;-)

Correct, many Chrysler dealers were also Plymouth dealers so as you noted they had it covered. I'd bring something better than a book to a salvage yard---your phone. Plenty of quick look ups to be had there too.
Yup, with the VIN, you win: C for Chrysler, E for Economy price class, 43 for four door hardtop, G for 383 V8 with two barrel, 9 for 1969 model year, C for Jefferson Ave, Detroit, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The original Jefferson plant that produced this car operated under Chrysler from 1925 to 1990. In 1991, the "new" Jefferson plant opened and still operates today under Stellantis.
We got the tag, we can brag: L31 for fender mounted turn signal indicators, L35 for cornering lamps, B41 for front disc brakes, G11 for tinted glass, all windows, P21 for power front bench seat, H51 for single AC and heater, R13 for deluxe AM radio with 5 watt speaker, V1X for full Black vinyl top, T3 for Bronze Mist exterior paint, B11 for heavy duty drum brakes, E61 for 383 V8 with two barrel, approx. 290 gross HP, D32 for heavy duty automatic transmission, E2T for Saddle vinyl interior trim, among other codes. By 1969, Chrysler trim tags were easier to decipher than in previous years. Chrysler got smart and went to a GM "RPO" (Regular Production Option) type system versus the previous "Morse Code" style system of codes. Manchester Mazda appears to occupy that property where Chorches Motors was (the Chrysler dealership stamped on the back of the brochure).
The only C body Chrysler product that l had that l recall was a 64 Dodge Custom 880 361 two barrel, and it was one of the most dependable vehicles l have ever owned.
Would be a keeper today.

Those "recall wheels" look very similar to the rare Motor Wheel "Spyder" which also had cast aluminum centers and was also available in the late 60's / early 70's and like the recall wheels are worth alot of money.
That's center section of the rear end is worth some money if it does have the sure trac.

Cool. Was waiting to see this one. One of my friends dailies a 69 Newport Custom 2 door. F8 green with a black interior. Its highly updated with 4 wheel disc brakes, Firm Feel tubular control arms, Gear Vendors overdrive, buckets and a floor shifter. Original 383 rebuilt and running a full MSD ignition with Edelbrock intake and 4bbl. Its an awesome cruiser and turns heads everywhere it goes.
If I had a job where I didn’t have to travel so much for business, I would LOVE to “daily” something like that! Just something that sticks out from the sea of nameless, faceless crossovers or imported econoboxes that everyone is driving!
@@ddellwo I hear ya. It's a lot to keep the body in good shape. It's had metal and paint work done multiple times to keep it looking new. He doesn't work anymore and it doesn't see winters and our salted roads, so that helps.

The '69 Imperial LeBaron 2 dr. wins my vote for best of the fuselage style MOPAR! Make mine black with the dark red leather interior. Stated #'s of suitcases but not #'s of bodies for these trunks.

Hi Steve, great video on this Chrysler Newport. Steve did you score tickets for this yrs event at Fort Adams? I've heard most of the older artists some of the newer ones also. It wasn't to long ago I was in New Orleans for the New Orleans Jazz Festival April 23 - May 3. I guess Herbie Hancock and Joe Russo's Almost Dead would be the most notable artist this yr. Tickets definitely sold-out fast. If anyone is interested it's the Newport Jazz Festival August 4-6. I'm sure some tickets will become available as the dates get closer and life events force a change in plans. I can't make it that weekend myself I have a trip planned that week to Wind Gap, PA for their Appalachian Fiddle & Bluegrass Association Festival Aug 3-6. From there I'll be in Galax, VA Aug 7-12 at the Old Fiddler's Convention. I'm in KY on top of Poppy Mountain at Rudy Fest Bluegrass Festival. The weather hasn't been too bad a couple of showers here and there. What do you get when a Smurf pees on your lawn?
