One minor detail you missed is that some primers act as micro fillers, particularly Mr surfacer and alclad primers. Micro-filler primers fill in shallow scratch marks caused by sanding, which makes them ideal for anything you've had to sand to shape. The numbers on Mr surfacer primers are roughly indicative of the grit of sandpaper used to scratch the piece up, Mr surfacer 1000 for example will completely fill scratches from 1000 grit or higher sandpaper.

Just wanted to thank you for all your content and tutorials. I've been spending the past few days researching Gunpla, as I plan to get into Gunpla. Of all of the channels I've found so far, yours in particular has been one of the most the helpful (if not the most helpful) in providing concise, yet comprehensive information.

Primer is not paint. primer is a bonding agent that is used to seal thee surface of the material you are painting and help the pant to adhere to your material.

I just subscribed as I’ve been watching a lot of your videos whether it’s how to apply dry transfers or how to prime parts like this one. I got into the hobby earlier in the year and just started going beyond the gunpla basics like snap building and panel lining. These videos are really helpful.

    Thanks again Henry!

HENRY!!!! Lots of the cheap walmart primers (like Krylon - and most of the "primers") are just GREY paint. They don't sand well at all. Look for primers labeled "high build" as well as "sandable". Great video.

Brick in the Yard Model Supply carries a plastic-safe primer called Prime-It! I'm not sure what it costs, but it's brushable. It also works in HVLP hand sprayers (think auto body.) Check it out on their TH-cam channel if you want to see it in action.

Say, I gotta ask. Does using cheap spraycan primer like the ones you mentioned have a high chance of causing bleed-through of certain colors? I've had reds bleed through white really badly when I was trying to paint one of my kits causing me to scrap the project altogether.
That out of the way, this guide was very informative! Thank you!

    • @GuntanksInSpace

***** Thanks for the answer! Guess I should look into switching primers. At least Tamiya Spray Primer won't cause that I hope (since that's what we have available where I live).
Also, I forgot to mention that it also happens on cheap spraycan clear coats. Had that happen to my Sazabi and the red bled through the decal work.

Hi Henry your tutorials are awesome! I noticed you have a tutorial for just about every major aspect of building/painting Gunpla. However, I notice that you don't have a tutorial about "Seal Coating". Do you seal coat your Gunpla or just call it a day after you paint them with lacquer paints? I mainly use Tamiya acrylics to paint my kits and then I use different kinds of sealers depending on what type of look I like flat, semi-gloss, glossy, and clear. Do all sealers come in spray can paints or are there any kind that come in airbrush types (never seen them)?
I"ve just recently in the past year have gotten into airbrushing and painting my Gunpla and it would be great to get tips on how to properly apply sealer and maybe show what each different type looks like. I have encountered the issues of sometimes my semi-gloss Tamiya spray sealer leaving my kits slightly sticky afterwards. Is this normal? I myself and I'm sure other of your viewers would appreciate your take on this topic. Would also make for another great tutorial video to add to your collection!

  • @RobotJeeg

I saw modelers using the primer as a light mist instead than a thick layer of primer. Using the primer as a mist is just to help paint to stick to the surface better without wasting bottles and bottles of expensive primer. I didn't try by myself this technique. Someone of you did it?

  • @BlatinoBoi1

So is the way it goes: You "MUST" use Acrylic primer if your painting with Acrylic base paint?
And Enamel primer if your painting with Enamel paint?
And Lacquer primer if your painting solely with a Lacquer paint?

What do you finish your models with Lacquer gloss clear, panel line then throw on dullcote? I watched your HG 1/100 Wing Zero video and the transformation part have me worrying about rubbing paint off (Probably because I have used Vallejo). Your finish looks awesome compared to a gloss coat so I'd like to copy cat it :)

Thanks a lot for the video.
Thanks for answering question that bothering me all this time that is : primer help paint to stick, but my primer paint gives rough surface and if I sand it some area of the primer might gone. So either I should use levelling thinner to smooth the primer, or paint thicker layer of primer so that when I sand it there is still layer of primer on surface. Any comments or advice?

Just started watching your videos and this is a bit unrelated to this particular video. But I'm wondering what you do with all of your extra weapons and gear you get with your Gunpla? I assembled my second one ever...the master grade Dark Matter, and I have a butt ton of extra swords and what have you. Right now they are just on the Action base and around it. But do you have a drawer full of beam sabers or do you put them in a sandwich baggy next to the assembled and painted kit?
