BMW R Nine T - Simply Wunderbar

- Earlier in the year I had a great opportunity to ride the 1965 BMW R60. What a beautiful thing it was too. Tim who owned the R60 also has a couple of other BMW’s including this BMW R Nine T. Not being able to get on many BMW’s Tim offered me a ride on his. I am so grateful to him and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, the mic picked up a lot of buffeting from the screen which I didnt get myself. Nevertheless, I loved the ride and what a fantastic bike.

I can I’ve ridden one! Okay can’t get my foot down flat! So there! I had a BMW R850R. Very nice bike but it never got into my soul. Did the business but when came home put it away and never gave it another thought!. Whilst the say the V7 I get a coffee and go out and sit with it, talk to it and pat it! 🤣

Morning Mr Taym, as you may remember I have an RnineT and a 1250GS, totally different bikes in so many ways. So glad to see you on a RnineT as I think it’s such a lovely bike to look at and ride but overlooked by many in favour of Triumph etc.
It’s my Sunday bike, my DGR bike, my garage queen that I just look at and polish and smile at! I think it would tastes like Caramac..
I also look forward to your thoughts on the GS, having had mine around 9 months now, I have grown to love it, it’s the perfect all rounder, a blast to the pub on green lanes or long distance touring, even rode the Dave day ride from London to Barrow on the GS in total comfort.
Good to know you are getting to try BMW at last.

It’s all about that engine for me. I love the way it gives a shotgun sound at the exhaust when I change up with the quick shifter at around 3.5k revs on my GS. ❤
R nine T TAYM well this is a bit different I kind of like it and not at the same time "strange " not sure I would have one but I certainly can appreciate the design and look of it in a lot of ways hmm interesting one , thanks for the thought provoking watch 😉👌👍

Fabulous bike TAYM, I had a feeling you would like that Boxer Twin vibe. I took a bit of time to gel with one but now I have I love it. As you say just the right amount of thump to give it charcter. I reckon you definitely need to try a GS.

Yes, this is a nice bike Taym but how I have longed for a real BMW retro bike something like my R100rs I had in the 90's. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, even a modern R65 boxer would suffice. Anyway, enjoying my new Honda Cb500x and the weather for riding is finally here. 😊👍🏍

Wunderbar. What a beautiful machine, black is perfect colour and how good is the sound. Wish my Ducati "rumbled" instead of vibrated and it does haha. Taste? Black Forest cake.😊 Thanks TAYM.
They are nice bikes & boxer engine not like troublesome GS 750-850 Parrallel like Derek had with leaky crank cases after 10000miles.Derek said they don't use gaskets but sealant that brakes down after 9-10000km & leaks & if off warranty a big hassle.
Boxer is way to go & shaft drive too & R Nine models look great & be Wonderbar to ride & own.
Very nice looking bike. Smart ! One almost needs to wear a suit and tie riding that machine 😆 🤣

What a great looking bike 👍👍. Being an older model, it probably has proper engine gaskets too. I remember that Derek's BMW had silicone sealer instead, which was a poor way for a manufacturer to save a few pennies.

I've lusted after the R9T Urban GS but this bike is such a stunningly good looking bike. Falls into the category of no dealers within 3-4 hours of me, or I might have made the plunge.

Ive owned three BMW R NineTs - two were the Option 719 variants, i found the riding position was on longer rides hurting my knees and hips , so i bought the Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello and i'm loving it

I think it’s a great bike , I had a look at one in the Harley dealership round the corner from me and like you the looks and quality are amazing , also I love shaft drives😊😊😊

A solid looking machine , I love the colour and headlight fairing but not sure about the seat finishing a bit short but I guess it goes with the sporty looks . Thanks TAYM

Hi TAYM, Good to read your thoughts on the R9t. I am fortunate to have recently purchased the new version R12 9t to add to my wonderful T100 Bonneville. Both, in my view are wonderful bikes and totally different. I find the BMW to have slightly better handling, very modern electronics and is easier to move around. The only gripe for me is the distance to the nearest Motorrad dealer in Long Melford, but then servicing is only once a year for me. Put it on your list for comparison.

Definitely a Growler ! ... Aestheticlly I always see these as an age old design that has had the kitchen sink of design farkle's thrown at it in a desperate attempt to keep it looking modern ! ... It's a unique thing though and certainly not boring.... I just think Moto Guzzi do it so much better.
The sideways torque reaction is due to the transverse layout of the cylinders; I get the same thing on my '05 Guzzi 750 Breva. It's called character. I don't like the back end styling of this Bimmer however, nor the totally useless 'mudguards.' Definitely not to my taste.

Ah Taym, so your a throttle blipper are you ? The phenomenon you refer to is called torque reaction, also prevelant on Moto Guzzi's. Did you say this was Tim's ? I wonder if its the one he had stolen recently in Saltzburg ?
No, it was the G/S that was stolen from Strasbourg. There are some nasty folk around - be careful. Replaced it with an R1250RS

What does it sound like? It sounds like it's suffering from a bad case of flatulence, it's producing more turbulence than any other bike he's tested. As for taste, I think it's acquired, a bit like Marmite. Quite clearly it's not the bike for me but each to their own as they say. I did take half a fancy to the new R12T untill I found out it lacked Puff 🌬️😰

Great video peek at a bike I was considering but oh! that rear end is dreadful and so is the original version. Nowhere for luggage, for even a one night away. It's obviously designed as a Sunday / Bike Night poser for local rides. The 20% that BMW got wrong, spoils the 80% they got right. So that was always going to be a NO from me.
Luggage is an option for the R9T, I had it on mine! Not enough space in it for a week away but a long weekend was definitely do-able!
