In this show, Redd Foxx's biggest bit was grabbing his chest and having a fake heart attack, which he did in plenty of Sanford & Son episodes. Redd Foxx ironically died of a heart attack in 1991 on the set of another TV show. The cast mates thought he was doing his famous Sanford & Son routine until they realized it was real. :(

Redd Foxx died in 1991 and was a huge inspiration to comics like Richard Pryor, Dick Gregory Eddie Murphy and just about any insult, dirty comic regardless of race to this day. His albums today I believe come with a parental warning and I know my parents would kill me for listening to them. I did it anyway. His most famous roll was as Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid movie franchise. He and Redd Foxx were great friends. Redd Foxx had a lot of his friends on that show. Pat Morita being Japanese-American can do a spot on vocal impression of Redd Foxx. I mean he sounds just like Foxx. Sanford & Son aired from 1972-77 and it was always in the top 10 most watched tv shows. Redd Foxx had already had a long career as a comedian, and he put out over 50 comedy albums. He died of a heart attack in 1991, if he were still alive he would be 100 years old. LaWanda Page played the hilarious “Aunt Esther” and she also had a long career as a comedian. She and Redd Foxx had been close friends since they were children, and when he was offered “Sanford & Son” by the NBC tv network, he told them that unless they hired LaWanda to be on the show with him, that he wouldn’t do it.

When I was 12 my folks went on a trip to NYC, and they passed Red Foxx on the street. My folks said, He had a white woman on both arms, and a fur coat that dragged the ground. Granted my folks are Southerners, and it was the early 80's.

What a classic. The Asian guy, Pat Morita, was actually a good friend of Redd Foxx and there are videos here on TH-cam where he talks about how wonderful Redd Fox was and how he was broke and Redd said that he would put him in his show and they came up with this character named Ah Chu - he said when he went to Harlem for the first time some kids ran up to him and went "Ain't you Sneeze! Ain't you Sneeze!" And he had no idea what they were talking about until it dawned on him - what does a sneeze sound like?? Achoo. So that was the slang name for him in the 'hood. It's a really wonderful interview in which he does a SPOT ON imitation of Redd Fox and he tells how generous and kind Redd was in real life. Incidentally, I believe he was called "Redd" because of his light complexion. Black people have various categories for light and dark skin. Light complexions may sometimes be called light skinned, yellow, high yellow, or red. And if someone is really high yellow with "good" hair they'll just be "she look white or he look white." This was a fantastic show. It still is, actually. Here's the Pat Morita Clip if you want to watch it: Pat Morita discusses his mentor Redd Foxx th-cam.com/video/490TsUYe5f4/w-d-xo.html Pat Morita discusses playing Ah Chew on "Sanford and Son" th-cam.com/video/I_v9na7dRcs/w-d-xo.html

Yes! I love Sanford and Son so much. The theme song, by the great Quincy Jones, is my ringtone. When I get a text its Fred calling out "You Big Dummy!". Its funny when I'm at the grocery store and I get a text. Anyone near me is highly confused.

My all time favorite comment is Fred telling Aunt Esther that he can stick her head in some dough and make gorilla cookies and also there's an episode that at the end Fred accidently snatches Aunt Esther's wig off her head and Lamont laughing and they left it in the episode>

It wasn't an accident, and it also wasn't scripted. Redd did it to get a reaction and everyone's reaction was priceless.

Redd Foxx is deceased, he passed away in 1991 of a heart attack, he was a trail blazer just like Flip Wilson. Because of the debt owed to the IRS, Eddie Murphy paid for his funeral as he owed some 3 million plus. Foxx was known for his raunchy edgy comedic style of comedy. The TV series, Sandford and son plays today in reruns and the jokes still hit home. The characters on the show were funny, from Bubba, Grady, Aunt Esther, Rollo, Julio,Ah chew, officer Smitty & Hoppy. The show is a classic.

John Elroy Sanford (December 9, 1922 - October 11, 1991), better known by his stage name Redd Foxx, was an American stand-up comedian and actor. Foxx gained success with his raunchy nightclub acts during the civil rights movement. Also his Tv series Sanford & Son

The woman Redd Foxx kept calling ugly was actress Lewanda Page. She played his sister-in-law on the show. They were a huge part of the show’s success. Redd and Lewanda were lifelong friends from childhood. She had no acting experience prior to this show, but had been doing standup comedy for decades. Redd had suggested her for the show, and the producers were hesitant to hire her. Redd Foxx threatened to back out of doing the show, so they gave in. Good thing he had the wisdom to know she would be great!

American subscriber here. Great channel. Redd Foxx died in 1990 of a heart attack. He quit Sanford and Son in 1977 because he wanted more money. He got Lawanda Page(Aunt Esther) the job on S&S because they were close friends. It ran from 1972 to 1977.Great Show.

All in the family and Sanford and Son were two shows that could never be written for today's sensitive audiences - even though they are timeless. Redd Foxx lived in Las Vegas for awhile until the IRS seized his house, inside contents, and cars in 1989. He died bankrupt and owing the IRS over 3mil.

I remember watching this with my parents when I was a child. I had no idea at the time that this comedy was very edgy. It would NEVER fly these days but it was very funny back in the day. I have wonderful memories watching it with my parents, who are now 89 (dad) and 85 (mom). They just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary! So blessed to still have them in my life. Thank you so much for bringing back some wonderful memories for me as a child (even though watching it now makes me cringe!) Lol!!
