Next thing you're going to tell me you've never seen( flip Wilson show) and that you don't know who Geraldine and killer are. now flip Wilson was like the first comedy celebrity to have his own TV show before any of these black sitcom. I am in my 60s and I still remember the lineup now on Friday. Get Smart. High chaparral The flip Wilson show and The midnight special featuring wolfman Jack
Aunt Esther used to call Fred a fish eyed fool. To bad they didn't play when the cops came over. The cops were a black guy and a white guy and when the white guy would talk the black guy would translate into words Fred and Lamont could understand. White Cop: Attempting to sell copper the said burglary may have been perpetrated by the suspect in question Black Cop: There's a dude selling copper that he snatched himself.
This show premiered in 1974 and was hilarious. Another must is "All In The Family" which premiered in 1971. Ask your dad about that show, he'll tell it's a must watch. Probably the greatest sitcom in history. The living room set is on display at the Smithsonian, that's how culturally important the show was. The show revolves around Archie Bunker, his wife Edith, daughter Gloria and son in law (Meathead) Mike. A great start would be "All In The Family, Compilation Of Archie Bunker On Religion" Hilarious! Also, "All In The Family Archie Bunker's Most Racist Comments" it's like 23 minutes long and a must watch. I was born in 1957, so many great shows on in the 60's and 70's. Those days are gone forever. Peace ❤
at 65, a line I still use from this show: something was delivered and the guy stood there waiting for a tip: Fred Sanford: You want a tip? Don't eat egg salad then ride the bus. 😁
I’m from the caribbean I used to watched this as a kid I can never forget the laughs I love it They say that sandford, and Esther we’re very good friends in real life they said,he actually, helped her,get the role.
For a recommendation, I would suggest both "The Carol Brunette Show", and it's TV spin off series, "Mama's Family". Also, I'd suggest the "Dorf" series, played by Tim Conway, who was a semi regular guest on Burnette's show.
I grew up watching that show. My mom would allow me to watch it, but when her and her friends would play Redd Foxx comedy albums , I got sent up to my room 😂 also this show was based on a show from the U.K.

As it’s been said, before, Fred Sanford was a racist, and Archie bunker was a racist, but the funny thing is is that everybody laughed back in the day they didn’t get offended like they do now.
@@peterr6595 Who are you quoting, I see quotation marks in your comment. I think he saying they (he said """they""") can't take words in today's time, people """they"""get insulted over a joke. Look at David Chapelle people get offended over his transgender jokes. Sensitive, tender, that political correct sht. Back in the day you could say a word like Fag on national TV. Try that shit today it would be an Outcry. So would it be a """humor""" to some or an """insult """. Also, if the setting is comic then it's comic. Why take it as an insult
Don’t get it twisted there was no maliciousness in their actions. They may have been politically incorrect but they were not vicious and ugly like today’s racist are and people know the difference.
I watched all those as a kid. Then when I was older, in reruns. George Jefferson started out as Archie Bunkers neighbor on All In The Family, and all they did was insult each other. They were both racists. But the audience, black or white, laughed at the jokes and didn’t get offended. No one took things so seriously all the time.
Favorite line from Fred Sanford. "You can call it dumb if you want to." Grady replies, "IT'S DUMB!" Fred says, "You can call the hospital, and tell them to get your room ready."

@@sadiewagstaff890 Thanks for your detailed and articulate disagreement. I'm not wrong though. Both shows center around a PIA old guy who pisses everyone off around him, but makes the audience laugh. Then the people around him explain the correct way to do or say things, creating a lesson out of the exchange. It's EXACTLY the same show.
@@sadiewagstaff890 Wikipedia: After the show premiered in 1972, newspapers touted Foxx as NBC's answer to Archie Bunker, the bigoted white protagonist of All in the Family. Both shows were adapted by Norman Lear from BBC programmes. Sanford and Son was adapted from Steptoe and Son and All in the Family from Till Death Us Do Part.
More fun facts:. Redd Foxx aka Fred Sandord paid homage to his brother in this show. His brothers name is Fred Sanford, and Redd's real name is John Sanford. LaWanda Page while she was really a Christian in real life, she was also a comedian who also made "party records" aka comedy albums with explicit themes and her comedy was just as raunchy as Redd's or Richard Pryor. One of my favorite albums by her is called "Pipe Layin' Dan" and it is definately not for the faint at heart. LaWanda would become an evangelist in the 80's and her daughter would also become a famous evangelist LaWanda Page got her start in the entertainment field as a "shake dancer" similiar to an exotic dancer of today. She was known as the "Bronze Goddess of Fire" or something like that. She would wear nothing but body oil and she would swallow fire. Apparantly she was very good at it. She then became a comedian. Redd & LaWanda grew up together in St. Louis Mo and we're really good friends. Most people know that the network didn't want to hire LaWanda Page, but Redd refused to do the show if she wasn't hired. LaWanda Page was a regular panalist on The Dean Martin Roast show. She would dress in more modern clothes and didn't look as old although at the time of the show she was in her mid-fifties. LaWanda Page real name is Alberta (I can't remember her last name) By the time that LaWanda Page was in her mid-thirties, she had been widowed 3 times including becoming a widow for the first time at age 19 after having married her first husband John at the age of 14.
OMG this takes me back! As a kid I was raised on all the Norman Lear TV show reruns. I watched this religiously! Watching this now and listening to your commentary... I never realise the writing. I'm dying laughing right now. Thanks for the memories!
The producer was initially reluctant to hire Lewanda Page as Aunt Esther. She had been a stand up comic in raunchy clubs her entire career, but didn’t have any acting experience. Because Redd Foxx had known her since childhood, he threatened to pull out from the show if they didn’t sign her on. I’m glad he stood his ground!
This is one of my all time favorite shows. I watched as a kid and still watch tiday. It doesn’t matter that it was taped during the 70s. It's funny. Clothes change. Music change. Pop culture changes but funny remains funny. My favorite episode is when Fred was getting married and Lamont told the aunts. The first time I saw it, my cheeks were sore from laughing so much. Favorite line from this episode: Esther: The wrath of God will strike you down. Fred: And this Louisville Slugger (as he picks up the baseball bat) will knock you out! 😅❤
I love how while the characters loathed each other no matter what (Esther never thought Fred was good enough for her sister and Fred simply gave back what he was getting), the actors were the best of friends.
I had an ex (we'll call her Patty Ann) in the middle 80's and we lived about 5 miles apart (let's say in Naranja Florida) and I'd make it to her place just before 11 pm to watch Sanford and Son and then the lights and TV would go off. Those were the days. Still love her from afar.
So glad you guys enjoyed the show. I used to watch it as a teenager and I was hooked on it. The show always brings a smile to me face till this day. I was saddened when Fred passed on. I don't know if the other characters are still around. But it brought a lot of joy to my heart to see you two enjoying it. Peace out!
Oh, I forgot the least fun of the fun facts: Fred would often fake a heart attack on the show to get out of working and say "Elizabeth, I'm commin' to join you honey" At the time of his death Redd Foxx played a mailman on a show starring his good friend Della Reese. Redd had a real heart attack & died on the set of the show however, at first Della and the other cast thought that he was joking, maybe bringing that same joke to the new show. Initially it's said that they laughed and even joked as he was dying not realizing that Redd wasn't joking. RIP Redd Fox, LaWanda Page, Della Reese and the many others that made the show a success.
Back in the day I laughed my way to a migraine headache after watching Fred cover his face while trying to watch TV because Aunt Esther's picture was blocking his view. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A lot of shows didn't have Q Cards where they can read from. Most of the time (Redd Foxx) Fred did his lines off the top of his head. Say say he could not read, or read too well. Redd Foxx (Fred) was also a very good friend of Malcolm X. They both used to work together in a restaurant , this before they both achieved fame. Both Redd Foxx and Malcom X both had fire red hair. Redd Foxx always kept Malcolm X laughing.. You'll find this in"""The Autobiography of Malcolm X""" Ohh, I almost forgot. I met Redd Foxx and Slappy White when I was a little boy around the age of 11 years old. Great and funny guys, two of them standing side by side.. I knew Louis Armstrong too he lived two blocks from me. Take care """You BIG DUMMY"""
I grew up watching this show and loved it!!! Oh my gosh It was hilarious and the best bits tended to be the fighting between Fred and Aunt Esther. One of the things that made it so funny is that both Redd Fox and LaWanda Page were already successful stand up comics and their comedy was pretty dirty. So you half expect them to unleash a tidalwave of vulgarity, so you tend to start laughing at the jokes they don't say because your mind automatically fills it in ( if you're familiar with their comedy). Otherwise its as you said, brilliant writing, great character acting, and great television. When i need to laugh i put on a DVD of this show or a few others and go back to a nostalgic time filled with this kind of fun and hilarity. I don't think there wasn't one of us kids who didn't imitate Fred Sandfor'd's over-the-top dramatic fake heart attacks and quoted the line "You hear that Elizabeth, I'm coming to join you honey" while clutching his chest and staggering around all over the he place. LOL!
Omgosh! That is too funny and you're right. Such a nostalgic time to be alive! Keaston back with another fun fact! You guys have got to watch the opening credits of the show! One of the most iconic themes in history, which I think was produced by Quincy Jones. This was my dad's favorite show. He would watch it while working out and I rode my rocking horse in the basement. Also, her most famous line from the show is, "Watch it, Sucka!" Or "You Ol' fish-eyed fool!"

Aunt Esther spoke about doing a good work but Woodrow went out to chill out after Fred insulted her. That man is known for acting a drunken bum and he finally had a good acting scene. At least this show was serious at times about love and understanding. Way to go Sanford and son!!!
Redd Foxx and LaWanda Page (Esther) all grew up together in St Louis, MO. They have a street name Redd Foxx ave. He also knew Malcolm Little aka Malcolm before he become a Muslim.
This is based on the BBC sitcom Steptoe and Son and was going to be called the same until Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin saw Redd Foxx live whose real name was John Elroy Sanford and offered him the main role and he named the character in honor of his older brother Fred Sanford who had passed away. And that's how it became Sanford and Son.

Redd Foxx and LaWanda Page are comedy legends. Redd’s comedy albums are a must have (not for kids!!)
I'm just going to say this you will hear the name Elizabeth in just about every episode.
Oh yes!! Elizabeth being Fred's deceased wife and mother of Lamont (their son)
Demond Wilson who played Lamont, was a Viet Nam vet. In the 1980's he became a minister and does outreach to paroles.
Watching a whole episode is better than just clips
I can see that for sure. Need to know the characters and we def will be watching more soon 😁-M@

I watched this as a kid and I was always laughing. You two are going to really enjoy watching the entire episodes.

Red Fox aka John Sanford his birth name had a brother who died in prison. His name was Fred Sanford.
Aunt Esther used to call Fred a fish eyed fool. To bad they didn't play when the cops came over. The cops were a black guy and a white guy and when the white guy would talk the black guy would translate into words Fred and Lamont could understand.
White Cop: Attempting to sell copper the said burglary may have been perpetrated by the suspect in question
Black Cop: There's a dude selling copper that he snatched himself.
The show revolves around Archie Bunker, his wife Edith, daughter Gloria and son in law
(Meathead) Mike.
Peace ❤
It premiered in 1972
Those shows are remakes of British TV shows from the late 60s
at 65, a line I still use from this show:
something was delivered and the guy stood there waiting for a tip:
Fred Sanford: You want a tip? Don't eat egg salad then ride the bus.
😁
Ahahaha!! 😂 Classic! 👌

Much funnier when Lamon wore the ripped tan jacket (earlier episodes). Watch the one with Big Money Grip or "I want my daddy's records".
Esther Winfield Anderson and red fox were friends for a long time they did the chitlins circuit.
And a fun fact that a lot of people don't know about her she was a showgirl she was a dancer and a pretty good-looking woman in her day, there's pictures of her in her outfits.😊

They definitely did. Plus, not all jokes translate so it may not be as funny as it was to us growing up in the 70s. Amusing reactions though
This is back when comedy was still funny. People didn't get offended about everything like they do now.
Amen! 🙏🙌-M@
As it’s been said, before, Fred Sanford was a racist, and Archie bunker was a racist, but the funny thing is is that everybody laughed back in the day they didn’t get offended like they do now.
And neither of the two were not racist at all
We know the difference between humor and insult. Don’t try that “people offended now” crap.
@@peterr6595
Who are you quoting, I see quotation marks in your comment.
"Good times" is another sitcom back in the day that was good.
Favorite line from Fred Sanford. "You can call it dumb if you want to." Grady replies, "IT'S DUMB!" Fred says, "You can call the hospital, and tell them to get your room ready."
You guys have no idea, I grew up watching this show as a kid in the 70’s. You guys should truly consider binge watching all episodes. You will crack your sides. Also, love your show! I had to subscribe! Bless you beautiful people!

It's basically All in the Family, but with a legendary comedian playing Archie Bunker, from a black perspective.
Wrong
The "dear" line was my first belly laugh at Sanford and Son 😂
More fun facts:.
Redd Foxx aka Fred Sandord paid homage to his brother in this show. His brothers name is Fred Sanford, and Redd's real name is John Sanford.
LaWanda Page while she was really a Christian in real life, she was also a comedian who also made "party records" aka comedy albums with explicit themes and her comedy was just as raunchy as Redd's or Richard Pryor. One of my favorite albums by her is called "Pipe Layin' Dan" and it is definately not for the faint at heart. LaWanda would become an evangelist in the 80's and her daughter would also become a famous evangelist
LaWanda Page got her start in the entertainment field as a "shake dancer" similiar to an exotic dancer of today.
LaWanda Page real name is Alberta (I can't remember her last name)
By the time that LaWanda Page was in her mid-thirties, she had been widowed 3 times including becoming a widow for the first time at age 19 after having married her first husband John at the age of 14.

Favorite line from this episode:
Esther: The wrath of God will strike you down.
Fred: And this Louisville Slugger (as he picks up the baseball bat) will knock you out! 😅❤

@@WellHelloSillyif you have watched All in the Family this is sort of like that. Remember it was the 70s and this is ground breaking
Red Foxx (Fred Sanford) and LaWanda Page (Aunt Ester) worked together for decades and decades together. They were close friends.
Peace out!
One of my favorite sitcoms growing up
Oh, I forgot the least fun of the fun facts:
Fred would often fake a heart attack on the show to get out of working and say "Elizabeth, I'm commin' to join you honey" At the time of his death Redd Foxx played a mailman on a show starring his good friend Della Reese.
My favorite was F-F-F-Fred's best buddy, Grady.
Yeah, I liked ol' Grady! The actor who played Woody was type-casted as a drunk or alcoholic.
"When I put that dollar in, it was worth a dollar. i think they owe me this check, the other check, and another one!" -Grady
Back in the day I laughed my way to a migraine headache after watching Fred cover his face while trying to watch TV because Aunt Esther's picture was blocking his view. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
OMGosh Wow! 😅-M@
You'll find this in"""The Autobiography of Malcolm X"""
Ohh, I almost forgot. I met Redd Foxx and Slappy White when I was a little boy around the age of 11 years old.
Great and funny guys, two of them standing side by side..
I knew Louis Armstrong too he lived two blocks from me.
Take care """You BIG DUMMY"""
I'm a Black first time watcher, and have the same reactions as you guys.
My Dad has shown me some really funny YT shorts clips from this show and I can't BELIEVE what we were able to say and get away with on TV (before everyone became too sensitive over the smallest ish)
