  • Best LENSES EVER! Camera Lens tutorial!
    What lens to buy? Here's my opinion of lenses and cameras to buy for all price ranges:
    devingraham.blogspot.com/2014/...
    I've seen several comments/questions in regards to field of view with resolution. Here's my response to that:
    In regards to field of view, in regards to changing resolution with the Canon 1DC from 1080P to 4K, while leaving the exact same lens on, switching to the higher resolution (4K), on the 1DC, your field of view does get smaller, no question about it. I'll do a video on it soon with video examples. I see the field of view get smaller every time I shoot in 4K with the 1DC. While filming with the RED, while switching from 4K to 6K, your field of view does the opposite, it gets larger (you see more on the left and right side of your image. While talking about this in the video, I was referring to the effect it has on the 1DC since I was talking about that camera at the time and holding it up, just wanted to clarify, I promise I wasn't making things up, and for whatever it's worth, I don't know the physics/theory behind it all :)
    The Canon and Nikon 50mm F/1.8 lenses I recommended, you can find in the links below. We own the Canon one, and I used to own the Nikon one before I switched over to Canon.
    Canon 50mm f/1.8
    amzn.to/1SF8SYi
    Nikon 50mm f/1.8
    amzn.to/1QJfFOk
    I have below a list of all the equipment we use on most our shoots. They are direct links to Amazon, where we bought all the same equipment. These are affiliate links, so if you want to support us, and buy the item off the link, will make a little money off of it. Your not charged any extra, and it goes to supporting us, just wanted to make sure you knew ahead of time :) These are all products I stand by 100 percent regardless, and all products we use on a day to day basis. At the end of this list I'll have a link to a blog going into even more depth about the equipment we use.
    Camera Equipment I Use:
    Canon 5D Mark III (use for all our behind the scene videos):
    amzn.to/1Xe3uL3
    Devinsupertramp Signature Series Glidecam:
    amzn.to/1UU9UjC
    Rode VMPR VideoMic Pro (Mic we use for all audio for Behind The Scenes and Main Videos)
    amzn.to/1R8xPMH
    My Favorite Lenses in Order of used most:
    Canon 16-35mm F/4 USM
    amzn.to/1Xe3KtA
    Canon 14mm F/2.8
    amzn.to/1UUacqQ
    Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 II
    amzn.to/1UUaf5X
    Canon 24mm F/1.4L II
    amzn.to/1UUaj5S
    Canon 50mm F/1.2
    amzn.to/1Xe3XwT
    For all our aerial shots, we use the DJI Inspire 1, with two controllers.
    amzn.to/1UUauhl
    We also use B+W circular polarizer. They get rid of the reflections from water, windows, and most plants/green things. We use them whenever the sun is out. When buying a polarizer make sure to get the right size for the lens that you own. I feel if your going to spend the money and buy an expensive lens, it's worth spending the extra money to buy a polarizer of the same quality to match your lens, otherwise your lens won't be as clear. Plan on spending about 130 dollars US for one.
    Here's a couple different sizes for common lenses:
    77mm.
    amzn.to/1UUbjH2
    82mm
    amzn.to/1UUbnXp

    This was very interesting man! Love seeing other people's gear. One quick thing I want to point out: You get a reduced field of view when you upgraded to 4K, not because it was 4K but because most likely the sensor size of the new camera was smaller.

      +KriscoartProductions No I think the 1DC (I don't know about the RED) only uses a part of the sensor when filming in 4K because downsampling that takes too much processing power. The sensor size is the same: 35mm fullframe.

    The 4k part about cropping seems weird to me. Your camera had either a smaller sensor or it wasn't a full sensor read out which introduced cropping.

    • @MakeSushi1
      @MakeSushi1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +L. Willis most red dragon cameras have smaller sensors than the FF 35mm sensors.

    • @KnorrV
      @KnorrV 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +L. Willis It's not the same with every camera. Some camera's have full sensor 4k so they don't crop the image. Plus he probably switched cropfactor as well. So the camera he uses now with 4k has a smaller sensor.

    • @sschulak07
      @sschulak07 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +L. Willis ya that was weird to me as well. its the exact opposite with my GH4 in 4k. when i goto 1080p i get a crop effect and shooting in 2160p its wider.

    I've loved your videos for years, Devin. I am thrilled to see you doing tutorial-type videos. I LOVE my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens! It's a great lens for most situations. It is pricey, but it's completely worth it. And I totally agree on the 50mm F/1.8 lens. It's on the cheaper end, but still great glass!

    That crop factor explanation is completely wrong. The lenses field of view did not change because you switched to 4k, it switched because 5d mark 3 is a full frame camera and red dragon has a crop of 1,5x.

    @ryanwee8891 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When it comes to resolution and how 'wide your sensor sees', I think you mean a completely different sensor size, as the 5D mark x (2, 3, S, SR) cameras shoot 1080p in full frame when high end cinema cameras like your RED has a Dragon sensor which is only Super35. It can be a bit misleading to certain people as there are full frame cameras that do 4K (A7S, A7SII, A7RII with line skipping and the new 1DX-II), without the crop. Just wanted to clarify things up a little. Really enjoying these tutorials and your usual videos btw, keep up the good work! :)

    It might be worth noting that a 16-35mm lens on an APS-C sensor (Canon 7D, 70D) equals to 25-56mm on a fullformat camera due to the 1.6x cropping. 2x cropping if you happen to have a micro-fourthirds sensor. So I would personally recommend to go for a 11-16mm or something similar if you have a non-fullformat camera.

    Hey these videos are great, but I just wanted to point something out. Shooting in 4k has nothing to do with the angle of view you are getting from a camera. When you were shooting with 5d's you were shooting on a full frame sensor and even if that was shooting in 4k with full sensor read out like most cameras do you would still be shooting on a full frame sensor and thus be getting the same field of view as 1080p. The reason why you were getting less wide shots when you switched to 4k is because you went to a red camera which has a super 35mm sensor which has about 1.5x crop factor in comparison to a fullframe camera so, your shots were 1.5x less wide.

    • @TheApp9
      @TheApp9 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mike Anastasio Thanks Mike, because I asked the same question because the angle has only to do with sensor size, not with resolution, so I didn't get his issues with switching from full-HD to 4K.

    • @mikeanastasio8073
      @mikeanastasio8073 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +TheApp9 yeah another reason why he might think that all 4K is cropped is because he also shot on a 1dc which has a full frame sensor, but I am pretty sure it has to crop to super 35 to shoot 4K because the sensor wasn't capable of full sensor readout in 4K for some reason. That does not mean that al 4K cameras do that though. The a7sii and a7rii for example can shoot full sensor on full frame in 4K.

    • @blacknightstudios
      @blacknightstudios 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same for original a7s and a7r?

    • @mikeanastasio8073
      @mikeanastasio8073 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Original a7r can't shoot 4k at all and original a7s can only do so with an external recorder but if you were using an external recorder then it is the full fullframe sensor 4k.

    You'll only see the difference in cheep vs expensive glass when your doing things like shooting light directly into the lens(flaring) or using it wide open or going from end to end zoom, but it's still barely noticeable at that point.

  • @EduarFilms
    @EduarFilms 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    So what Devin is recommending for camera and lenses is quite good for people with around $7.5K-10K in their pockets, but for there are not many people with that kind of money to spend or just rather not spend so much. Many of those who already made the investment in a Canon 6ti or 70d or any not full frame are not gonna look to spend so much on lenses, I know I did. So for those interested in getting similar stuff on much lower price you can look for the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 for wide lens, the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 for mid range, and the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 for zoom range all for around $1.5K. They may not give such an image quality of the canon lenses, but they will do quite well and you won't break the bank. I've been using those lenses for the past few years and they give great results

    • @goncalonorberto5593
      @goncalonorberto5593 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +EduarFilms or just get a pana g7 with a couple of mft lenses, way way cheaper, with 4k, 60fps etc etc.

    • @EduarFilms
      @EduarFilms 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you are right, I was just trying to point out the fact that I think for many people who can't afford this type of stuff can get cheaper things if they want to have similar equipment at least in terms of lens options.

    • @EduarFilms
      @EduarFilms 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gonçalo Norberto I don't know how good that one is in low light, usually MFT cameras are worse in low light than Crop sensor cameras, in the case to switch camera brand then I think a Sony a6300 is better choice with a canon lens adapter

    • @goncalonorberto5593
      @goncalonorberto5593 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +EduarFilms I know, but actually the G7 is better than the GH4 in low light.
      The reason I pointed the g7 is that the MFT line (lenses acessories etc) is very cheap, and the IQ is superior to any canon DSLR in the market right now.
      Canon announced the 80D which has almost no differences from the 70D (does 60fps 1080, has a few more focus points and has headphone jack) for 1300$.
      But not all people have 1300$ to spend on a body.

    The 70-200 2.8 is an absolute beaut of a lens. And the 16-35 F4 is the next thing I'm buying, gonna be a massive upgrade from my kit lens.
    I can't say I like the 50mm as a beginner lens, used one a lot, and as its an 80mm equivalent on an APS-C camera, its just too long. For beginners using APS-C cameras, also take a look at the 24mm 2.8 STM lens, its also really cheap, and much wider. For wide stuff (glidecamming etc) on APS-C, take a look at the EF-S 10-18 STM, its a 16-29mm equivalent. And if you have a bit more money, the Sigma 18-35 1.8 is an incredible lens for APS-C.

    awesome tutorial(s) =) do you prefer 50mm or 35mm f1.8 because you told (i think) to use a wideangle lens filming with glidecam...and 35mm is more wide than 55mm ^^

    I`ve been following you since you started and I`m so glad that you start this "tutorial program". I`m so passionate about image, about filmming and movement and I`m struggling for years to do something, but like the most of the people I don`t have money to invest :), but I did invest a little bit(cause I can`t live whitout) so all I need to do is just go out there and shoot! Now I have problem whit my "glidecam" cause is quiet hard for a woman to play whit, but I will not give-up, cause I pay for it :)), noooo, cause I`m crazy to do this! Thx so much for doing this and sharing this whit us! You are an inspiration to many of us!!! Sorry for my english, all the best :)

      I am also following Devin since his Bike in the lake Video. :) I watched your park video. It is not so smooth couse of your lens. 50mm (+ 1,6 crop factor) thats more than 75mm. I am using the glidecam for more than two years and I wouldn't get smooth shots wirh that camera setting. In my opinion you get the best results, with 20mm to 25mm. Specially for starting. :)

    Question - Do you use any cinema lenses in your kit, such as those with de-clicked aperture rings? I am just starting out as well and am wondering if, in your opinion, they are worth the extra cash.

    • @devingraham
      @devingraham  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Danial McCoy I hope to one day. Cinema lenses generally are much heavier, which makes it extremely hard to handle the Red camera, heavy lens, and glidecam while filming in our style. One day I hope to use cinema lenses though.

      +devingraham I shoot on the Red Epic with Arri Master primes. Those lenses are extraordinary! Really something worth investing your money on, but I see how it will hard handeling on a glidecam.
      Btw. keep up the good work!

      +sebastian sandnes Very interesting ! Did you try RED cine prime lenses? Did you notice heavy differences ?
      Devin the RED body+battery+side handle+glidecam+lense (even a canon) are crazy heavy ! Ok you start the first 10 min ok but you finish your day without feeling you harms anymore and with pains on your back. Respect Devin, you're hell of a athlete :-)

    4K can be fullframe. For example, the A7S i and ii, and the A7Rii (though it's not a full pixel readout), so that 16-35 will be great on those cams (it's my lens of choice for most stuff as well, good call).
    The Canon 11-24 is amazing as a replacement on a crop sensor like the RED and the Sony''s, but it's hella pricey. A good cheap alternative is the Tokina 11-16mm which is super sharp but has the suckiest focus wheel ever made. Swings and Roundabouts.

    To add to this, one thing thats important to point out (That i'm sure you'll cover in another video), is that the lower that number goes (aperture), the more bokeh you get because more light is coming through. So not only does the lower number make it better in low light, it also makes the background more blurry. =)

    I currently have a 24-70 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8 and I need an ultra wide. I do real estate photography as well as starting out with cinematography. Would you suggest getting an ultra wide zoom such as the 16-35? Or a fixed lens such as a 14mm? I'm honestly torn between the two options. Versatility vs (possibly) cheaper price and the prime quality.

    Most people will be starting out on an apsc sized censor and in that case all the lenses you mentioned would be cropped in f stop focal length and optical resolution so they would pay for something they won't get. If you have an apsc censor like a conon 60d 70d 80d 7d etc but a lens ment for an apsc censor

  • @trevorpinnocky

    Sensor resolution is independent of sensor size. I have 4k in my phone and that sensor is the size of a gnats butt.
    14mm is 14mm on all sensors. The only thing that changes is the FOV or perceived focal length depending on the crop factor.

    • @devingraham
      @devingraham  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +trevorpinnocky In regards to field of view, in regards to changing resolution with the Canon 1DC from 1080P to 4K, while leaving the exact same lens on, switching to the higher resolution (4K), on the 1DC, your field of view does get smaller, no question about it.
