    I have below a list of all the equipment we use on most our shoots. They are direct links to Amazon, where we bought all the same equipment. These are affiliate links, so if you want to support us, and buy the item off the link, will make a little money off of it. Your not charged any extra, and it goes to supporting us, just wanted to make sure you knew ahead of time :) These are all products I stand by 100 percent regardless, and all products we use on a day to day basis. At the end of this list I'll have a link to a blog going into even more depth about the equipment we use.
    Camera Equipment I Use:
    Canon 5D Mark III (use for all our behind the scene videos):
    amzn.to/1Xe3uL3
    Devinsupertramp Signature Series Glidecam:
    amzn.to/1UU9UjC
    My Favorite Lenses in Order of used most:
    Canon 16-35mm F/4 USM
    amzn.to/1Xe3KtA
    Canon 14mm F/2.8
    amzn.to/1UUacqQ
    Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 II
    amzn.to/1UUaf5X
    Canon 24mm F/1.4L II
    amzn.to/1UUaj5S
    Canon 50mm F/1.2
    amzn.to/1Xe3XwT
    For all our aerial shots, we use the DJI Inspire 1, with two controllers.
    amzn.to/1UUauhl
    Our favorite audio mic for on board camera:
    Rode Pro Mic
    amzn.to/1R8xPMH
    We also use B+W circular polarizer. They get rid of the reflections from water, windows, and most plants/green things. We use them whenever the sun is out. When buying a polarizer make sure to get the right size for the lens that you own. I feel if your going to spend the money and buy an expensive lens, it's worth spending the extra money to buy a polarizer of the same quality to match your lens, otherwise your lens won't be as clear. Plan on spending about 130 dollars US for one.
    Here's a couple different sizes for common lenses:
    77mm.
    amzn.to/1UUbjH2
    82mm
    amzn.to/1UUbnXp
    GoPro Hero4 Black Edition. This is the one we use and recommend.

    Some people are getting mad about him not shooting flat all the time.
    Guys, it's all preference and down to what style you prefer. As well as how much time you want to dedicate to editing in post.
    For a TH-camr nearing 1M subscribers, you gotta bust out a video almost daily. Shooting super flat and then spending days in post just isn't practical.
    Peter McKinnon has his super cinematic style which is what makes him... him! Casey's style is that raw, untouched vloggy style.
    Devin's style is that super dramatic vibrant colour style, and if he can achieve that in camera, why not?
    There are no rules in film making, so always experiment to see what works for you :)

    I remember searching for color grading and finding your videos in a forum where they wondered, how many hours or days you must have spent on each shot to get these great colors. :D
    I also tried shooting flat in the last time, but it just slows down the workflow for me.

    I prefer my videos look better after post not on camera. On camera only me watching it, but afterwards thousands of people are watching. My style is -4,-4,-4,0 and it gives horrible look on camera but when i sit on my computer there is a lot more control and details in my videos to color correct/grade. Dynamic range is very high

    Interesting, I have always shot with a flat picture style but I guess that with compression you loose a bit of information so if you are not shooting raw then you will have less flexibility in post if you shoot with a more punch picture style but your image will be degraded less to get it to look the way that you want for the final edit.
    The only problem would be that you would be slightly committing to a colour grade that you may not actually want to use when you come to post. Which would be bad if you changed your mind on the type of colour grading to use.

  • @MindOfBoomBoom
    @MindOfBoomBoom 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    i am really conflicted by this advice. Doing it in camera limits your color ranges, where as shooting flat gives you the data you need to color in post. I cant argue with your success, however, in camera tends to crush blacks and you lose details in the shadows/definition, especially on days where the sun is not as co-operative as you would like. Shooting with a recommended Cinestyle will do more for you, then letting the camera stylize your camera, unless of course you are doing everything to avoid post color correction. As you correctly stated both have their pluses and minuses, but i think the consensus has always been , shoot flat, do the color in post. there are SO MANY ways to get a style, like Red Giant Colorista, or Red Giant LOOKS i tend to believe post color correction will always win out. however Great video, good tips for people trying to get started with video creation techniques.

    • @TheApp9
      @TheApp9 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheMighty Thor The same with me. I think this gives you limitations. I want to have the whole dynamic in my picture and every information possible to decide in post in which scene I want to have which look. So I don't think this is a good tip. Furthermore, if you shoot with several cameras you have to use flat picture styles. And using Sony cameras you have to work in post because they do not have this colour science as the Canons have.

    • @sixdsix5028
      @sixdsix5028 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheMighty Thor I'm not sure about video, but plenty DSLR's can take pictures in RAW and JPEG simultaneously, so you have both files. I'm assuming developers have incorporated this for video file formats as well.

      TheApp9 yeah i do agree, i think for some one just starting out tho, the tip is good for them, this is a setup meant to keep a person from having to do as little post color as possible. thanks for responding

      Michael D for video FLAT is the equivalent of RAW, and i agree, for some beginners this tip is fine, it does go against most professionals advice but if we were all born with a camera in our hand, then we wouldnt learn anything :P thanks for your comment

    • @TheApp9
      @TheApp9 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheMighty Thor I think so too! Just for our confidence: Philip Bloom is with our opinion. He wants the flatest image out of the camera with most information and does everything in post. Even sharpening, which he turns un lowest position ;)

    Hey Devin,
    Please dont mistake color correction with color grading when you're talking about stylizing a flat image. Your "flat" examples were on point as far as color is concerned. What you were doing was adding your preference of color grade not actual correcting. Wish you mentioned a little something about white balance settings and how to properly dial in custom white balances and when is a good time to use the presets given from canon because thats more relevant to the subject of "Color correcting" not picture profile settings. Cheers

  • @Vylkeer
    @Vylkeer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    There's a difference between color correction and color grading:
    Color Correction: make the image look right and life-like with no alterations of any kind.
    Color grading: altering the image color tones, saturation, contrast etc. according to personal preference to give the viewer a different look / feel.
    When you're adjusting the camera's settings for video recording to your likes, you're basically color grading the content on camera instead of in post-production. If colors look too much saturated, they're not life-like anymore. Hope cameras will be able to take care of all of this automatically: white balance, contrast, saturation and color temperature so that everything looks right. Then you can color grade it in post-production if you will.

    Can't recommend this approach, even for novices. It's good to know what you want, but by shooting flat, you have so much freedom to adapt in the editing process. Something as simple as smoothing colour transitions between shots is made more difficult when colour grading has been predetermined by the camera operator.

    • @devingraham
      @devingraham  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +VaNilla I agree within a professional level. The examples I talked about were given mentioning quick turn arounds, and not having the knowledge awhile back to be able to take it in to be color corrected, or do it myself. I feel most film makers on TH-cam have to do whatever they can to get the best image as possible. Most film makers within the TH-cam space I've dealt with, didn't have the means to color there footage at all, so they were shooting flat, and could do nothing with the image, so that's why I feel it's really important to know that this is a great option out there. And it's the one I personally use when I'm not filming Raw.

    • @VaNillaGTA
      @VaNillaGTA 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +devingraham Surely though, even basic colour correction tools are better than those provided in camera? You can reduce sharpness, reduce contrast, boost saturation, and tint footage using tools available in entry level software like iMovie, all the way up to professional editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro and colour grading software like DaVinci Resolve. It's functionally the same as doing it in camera, but you aren't stuck with the choices you made on the day of shooting. You can even save presets, enabling you to apply your settings across all of your footage, saving time if you have to. I would suggest honing your skills in software rather than in camera, because that's where you have the most options, and it's non-destructive, but I respect your opinion :).

    • @devingraham
      @devingraham  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +VaNilla Yeah, to each there own for sure :) I do color correct now, since we are shooting RAW with the RED, BUT, when I shoot with DSLR cameras to this day, those are the settings I use, I promise I've tested out the other settings, and they work, but I've always preferred this look much more. And it truthfully has worked awesome for us. We have sold the footage for TV commercials all around the world, it's played in several super bowl commercials, and it was all those camera settings I mentioned above, and they had no issues with the footage, ha. So that's why I feel strongly about those settings for me, and I feel they would work great for most film makers on TH-cam that aren't shooting Raw :)

    • @devingraham
      @devingraham  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +devingraham And by lowering the sharpness on the camera, it doesn't make the image blurry by any means. I don't feel this tutorial video looks un sharp at all, and it's the same settings I used on this as well, for whatever it's worth, ha.

  • @TheNewBloodDan
    @TheNewBloodDan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    While you want to get your image right on set, that shouldn't be for the color grading, where you should aim for a flat profile and add the color grading in post. While your method of having all the color grading to be done on the camera while shooting isn't exactly professional, if you like the image as well as the people you work with/for, then I don't see an issue with it.

  • @ZachByrd
    @ZachByrd 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 5:00 you expressed what I fear about shooting flat. I worry that I won't be able to re-create what the camera could have done had I not tinkered with the settings. With that being said, we shoot on a Canon 5d Mark III and a t5i and I've found both cameras in standard picture style do well in morning and evening light but mid-day the contrast and saturation seems funky.

  • @RAKK9595
    @RAKK9595 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    VisionColor! They make the best profiles for Canon DSLR's. Check them out. Hopefully someone reads this. They make three styles that I've used. VisionTech, VisionColor, and Cinelook. VisionTech is the flattest of them all and it still looked great. Nice colors, good shadows, and great highlight roll off. VisionColor is a better standard profile. It's just as good as VisionTech, but slightly less flat. And CineLook is great for when you need to get stuff out quickly. It gives you the teal and orange look in camera. It's great and makes the footage much more vibrant.

    To film in a true flat image you want your camera set at
    Sharpness: 0
    Color tone: 0
    Saturation -2
    Contrast -2
    Flat picture style is not neutral(0,0,0,0). You lower contrast to keep the most amount of blacks and whites to get a more in depth image, you want your blacks to be black as possible and your whites to be white as possible. The same goes for saturation, you want your greens to be all shades of green rather than one tone of green. That is also the reason why you don't raise the saturation all the way, if you put your saturation to +3 then all your greens would be one tone and it would give it a less professional or unreal look. Once you get into professional color grading you will want to film in flat (0,0,0,0 is not flat) If you are great at color grading then you can achieve any look you want if you film in flat. It leaves the most information and many different shades to work with. If you get into the higher level of color grading I would recommend filming in flat. Of course, I'm just the High School Level Arizona State Champ in Digital Cinema, so you don't have to take my word for it ;) (Again, flat is 0,0,-2,-2)

    Did you shoot this talking head with a Sony camera? Those are not Canon skin tones. Yes I agree you must adjust picture style settings and most importantly you must nail the exposure and color temperature right in camera as well since this video codecs are highly compressed and cannot really be adjusted natively in post like “raw” files. Think of this codecs as trying to color correct jpg images-it’s not possible, you are just adding color on top of color and further degrading an already lossy highly compressed file. If you really want that “film like” color, you are better off installing Visioncolor or Cineplus “Cinema” picture styles.

  • @helmet212
    @helmet212 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with your approach. However, it does limit the freedom in post but god how easy editing must be, if the videos were color corrected/graded (playing with white balance colours) in camera. Everybody seems to be following a pattern. But one has to be really clear on the look before hand. I just hate post production.

    Surprised you don't use Magic Lantern and shoot in RAW, wouldn't that make it easier to color grade between different cameras(ie RED) to maintain continuity?

    Thanks for the great info Devin. This is my favorite video so far. I like that your all about saving time because people don't realize how much time you have to spend editing and color correction just adds even more time. I'd love to seen some Red camera footage in your software color correction video and what the best settings are for that as well. By the way when I first found your channel it was the vibrant colors and great music of the Hawaii cliff jumping video that made me an instant subscriber. I think you only had a like 1 million subscribers back them. By the way these videos are the kind of videos TH-camrs love. I'm a TH-camr with 45000 subscribers myself.

    Soo going to give this a try! I recently got my first DLSR and everyone says something different. I have tried each one but no luck yet. My most recent were too bright even though my camera said it was fine. Sooo much to learn, so much to learn.

      +AccidentalBroadcast That first shot at 5:24 is with my picture profile I talk about. Then the following shot is the same location, 1 minute later, with me filming it on the "neutral" camera setting of the camera, to show the difference with shooting in "flat space".

    I think that doing everything in camera is bad. If you crank up the settings, In editing you're just screwed in case the shot went bad, you can't recover. I've been using a "flat profile" (just pulled down the contrast, sharpness and saturation) on my EOS600D and it's just better. I started doing this after watching a lot of tutorials on the internet. And is actually best. It takes more time in edditing but it's worth it.

    • @LukXBT
      @LukXBT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm shooting on the exact same camera and I agree. I'm shooting in cinestyle, it's a lot more flat. Tho shooting flat cam be risky some times because it's easier to under/over expose the image. Some times I would just switch to a normal picture style to set my exposure and then switch back to cinestyle.
