It's almost like a writing or art prompt - like "draw a autumn day" or something. Seems like a fun way to get creatively inspired by makeup without buying new things. Also makes the makeup application feel more fun/interesting than just "bronzey look" - instead you envision a "latte" makeup/girl.

Thats basically what it should be viewed as and is fun when thought of as such…. But so many young people get caught up in like basing their personalities around “aesthetics” these days that its more obnoxious than innocent fun to me.

That said, I also remember 70s retro styles being popular in the 90s, so I can't complain too much about young people making 90s stuff new again. It' s harmless fun IMO as long as people aren't pressured to overspend. Though I agree the names seem to facilitate algorithms.

I agree with you that it feels so nostalgic and it also feels like "romanticizing life" kind of vibes--making little moments more fun and finding magic in the mundane, if it makes sense--bonus points for doing trends with what you already own and making whats "old" be seen in a new light

I think the compulsion to give these trends their own names (often food related) is weird as a human but makes sense for recommender systems because it makes it so easier for machine learning models to find what’s similar amongst the videos. Like Midjourney prompts can look kinda nonsensical at first but you start realizing the best ones have some consistent “base” prompts to achieve a certain style. I think these trends’ names are like parts of a good prompt. The names also imply a recency, like just saying tomato girl is probably pinpointing a trend during a couple weeks/months in 2023 instead of “red blush” which could mean videos from 2012 featuring MAC products that no longer exist.

The latte makeup was the first time in AGES that I had fun putting together a makeup look - I felt like I was participating in something bigger than myself! And yes, I’m one of those people who normally wouldn’t click on tutorials (even though I did when I was younger) - but now the trends are fun and I’m all about the names! Is it just brown eyeshadow? Um yes. But everything old becomes new again and I’m here for it! Also love the “shop my stash” aspect as you mentioned

It just makes me laugh at how fast all of these trends come in and out! I remember like a few YEARS can be attributed to certain trends back in old school youtube days like the full coverage tarte shape tape days, the time when no one liked blush, the liquid lipstick trend, etc. And now these little trends are popping up, sticking around for a couple weeks and then you never hear about them again or they just pop up with a different name. I think it's fun too, although I'm not keeping up with them really since I'm not really on makeup tiktok or reels. Definitely like how these trends are less product based though!

I am so here for these trends and themes and just being fun and goofy. Dressing up to see Barbie in the cinema, enjoying the zeitgeist, participating in something fun and light! Loved this video and always love to hear your thoughts on these topics!

Magdalena Janet JUST did a video with BROWN mascaras and I think she said the YSL one was a pure milk chocolatey brown and it really did look gorgeous. I think it would look even better on you with your fairer skin. I'm tempted too. Recently been rocking brown liquid liner from Sephora line 🤎🤎🤎

Totally agree. I don’t care for the cutesy names, but I want more beauty content that is about creating looks with less focus on products.

I totally agree with you! I really love that the trends seem to be bringing back the artistic side of makeup, but in a way that is more achievable for everyone. I feel like a lot of the heavier makeup with lots of layering and detail work (I am looking at you cut crease eyeshadow) that took quite a bit of skill and time, ie the popular IG makeup of the pervious decade, was just not practical for most. Especially those that don't have certain eye or face shapes or that are a bit older. And it portrayed the idea that we had to spend a ton of money on all the products to be able to get those looks as well. I like that they are sticking the the lighter kind of more "natural" looks, that are easier to learn even for those that don't have a higher skill level or a lot of time to put into doing their makeup, but also are making it fun and cute at the same time.
The only time I think it can get toxic is when certain creators or influncers will claim they came up with the trend or whatever, and get mad that people aren't giving them credit. And we see this happen all the time with all kinds of things, but when it comes to pretty much everything in the beauty industry it's really all been done before. And A LOT of it is rooted in what has been taught in cosmetology school, to the employees at cosmetic counters/stores, or in film and theater makeup over the last century. It all gets recycled, reused and revamped.

For brown mascara try the Maybelline Sky High and/or the Loreal Age Perfect Lash Magnifying Mascaras. I spent all summer trying to find a actually brown mascara (not brown black, that basically pretty much looks like a dull black color) that also did something for my lashes (Because a lot of brown mascaras seem to have much lighter formulas than black. And while I often like my lashes to look more natural than I do with black mascara, a lot of them were not doing much.), and these two are my favorite. I will often layer them, as I often need to do with black mascaras as well to get the result I like.

These shades look great with your coloring (brown eyes, light brown hair). My eyes are on the smaller side too, and I don't use liner on the waterline, because it makes them appear even smaller. I keep my lid light, which helps.

Fun video! Turned out beautiful. I was excited and because I thought the latte look was doable with what I already had. I have the perfect brown Eye shadow quad for it. I like how it turned out but immediately I thought why is this a trend in the summer, that looks like a fall look to me. I'll try it again when the weather changes and it matches my outfits better. I prefer the pinky sunburnt look in the summer. Not sure if that's tomato or strawberry LOL

I think there's just so much competition on tiktok or wherever to be 'original' and get hits. Also people have no attention span anymore and are always looking for the next new thing. I see so many so-called 'hacks' that are literally things I've known about and have been doing since long before instagram.

Me using tret has made my freckles more prominent. They must run deep. I'm a redhead and not nearly as freckled as some but I'm noticing more and more and I avoid the sun so I'm guessing they're coming out from my childhood as I exfoliate layers.

No problem with trends. My problem is that things that used to get girls/women bullied all of a sudden are trendy just because someone pretty did it on themselves, know what I mean? Ever since I saw people getting bullied by freckles and then a freckle trend, I was like 'This is fucked up'. Anyways I do think trends are a good way to revamp/go back to things you liked, if you follow them of course because as we all know fashion/makeup/hair hell even cinema is cyclical

It’s just kinda ironic because you’d think at the core of makeup, it’s about experimenting and trying different things out, but people often get locked into a specific way of doing their makeup. And then trends come along and show people they *can* do something kinda quirky, although I kiiinda wish it didn’t require someone famous/hot to set the trend and give ppl the bravery to try something different.

Since barbie and the latte makeup looks are trending right now I came up with an idea called Barbie Latte Makeup. Normally I would use Colourpop You're Golden Palette in the shades Remote, Sandy (barbie makeup) and add the shades The Palisade, Day Dreamer and Weekend. If I was doing the barbie girl makeup trend I would use Kara Beauty You Had Me At Ahola Palette in the shades Sorbet, Ahola Spirit, Just A Slice, Fly With Me, Showtime, and Ocean Breeze. Another two palettes I would use combined for the Barbie Latte Makeup Trend are Colourpop's Blush Crush and Deja Brew combined. I would use the Nude Mood Palette but mine is old and it doesn't work anymore. In the Blush Crush Palette I would use the shades Lovesick, The One, and Made U Blush and then the shades in the Deja Brew Palette I would use Crushed Oats, Sweet Foam, and Cuppa You combined with those shades Lovesick, The One, and Made U Blush and that's how you get the Barbie Latte Trend. I'm going out to dinner with a friend of mine on the 18th so I will keep you updated how it works. I love using the Elf Luminous Putty Blush since it replaces my highlighter.

I think it's kind of what people have been asking for! To me it feels very og beauty community, like creating a makeup look, providing a tutorial rather than just pushing product. I think the millennial generation is very anti label which I relate to as a millennial lol but I think if we can look past the labeling of the trend, we should just enjoy the tutorial and the inspiration!

I use makeup to NOT look like tomato girl. LOL. Am a pale red head who burns as soon as the sun rises. I liked clean girl, that's pretty much been what I have done since like 1999. So. Yeah. Now I am strangely obsessed with bronzers. I just purchased three, fav so far is the makeup by mario creamy thing in fair. It looks like a blush bronzer combo.

I was honestly thinking that the other day. TH-cam used to be tutorial based and now it’s super saturated with everything new. I now prefer to watch videos where they are using nothing “new”. I completely understand that the job now is to sell sell sell but how exhausting from a consumers point to see an overwhelming amount of salesy content. Just my opinion. 💁🏻‍♀️
