    I've found that people that aren't as into makeup are very loyal to products. When they find something that works, they buy it vs trying anything new. And the beauty community loves trying what's new. Naked palettes used to be $54.

      I bought the original Naked palette back in 2010 or 2011 and I believe it was $44 back then! I remember thinking that was so much at the time. Prices have steadily crept up and I think we've been conditioned to think it's normal to pay $50+ for a palette nowadays (and oftentimes we purchase palettes more frequently now than 5 years ago).

    Something I’ve noticed about people who have one eyeshadow palette and no interest in the beauty community is that they want a palette that they can use all of the shadows. Use up their favorite and move to the next closest color. They also like brands/ products that have been around forever because that means they will be able to repurchase it if they really enjoy it

      I hear that a lot when I talk with some of my friends who are into makeup. Part of it is that most women don't wear dramatic eye looks to the office, or wherever they work. They want something they can do fast and easy that looks good. That is why you see a lot of natural palettes. I hear a lot of the beauty youtubers asking "who asked for this?" when a company comes out with a neutral palette, but as much as I love color, I have a ton of them. Most women don't follow "beauty trends" that change every season as much as the online community does. They're going for something for more classic and that accentuates their features easily.

It’s not the all time best formula but it’s good and an absolute workhorse - totally idiotproof and easy to throw on for work or any sort of daily basis sort of thing. I love watching the beauty community but beauty community is more creative. Their “job” is to create great looks that are colorful and more intricate. It’s how we get entertained we like watching them but I don’t think most of try to recreate a look. I’m not surprised at any of these top sellers because most of us have a job where we can’t wear glittery and bright eyeshadow. The reason the beauty community has great comparisons of eyeshadow is because they probably got the shadows in PR. If beauty gurus had to pay for everything they got they would probably buy one of these basic palettes as well because they would want to get their moneys worth.

    i think it’s important to keep in mind how many older women buy makeup but aren’t heavily online. older being a relative term and in no way insulting. anyway, there are less beauty influencers that are older and their communities that i’ve seen are smaller + mostly people not constantly online but who check in on occasion.
    to me it looks like some of these bestseller lists can be explained by 1. people not online all the time so they pick makeup based on friends recommendations and aren’t aware of “scandals” or “drama”. allll the moms (of middle school and older kids) i know use shape tape! 2. older make-up habits like powder foundation. that bare minerals foundation is awesome and so forgiving and it sounds like generations and generations of people have loved it so im not surprised it sells so well. this one maybe has less of an impact but people just get stuck in the makeup habits they learn as teens/young adults so i wouldn’t be surprised if old trends are still popular offline bc of that

  • @danicee
    @danicee ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Bestsellers are based on total sales, not what is selling the most in a month. Some sites also have “what’s hot” for the week or “trending” sections but the reason why the ones we see on Ulta and Sephora seem surprising is that they’re products that launched years ago. When they came out, beauty TH-cam was much more intense and it was extremely profitable back in 2016-2019. The hype for products really helped with getting viewers to buy products and newer launches have slowed, even though we have more options today than back then. The reason those products are still bestsellers is because a lot people restock them because they wear them all the time and they’re easier to gift, which is why so many people will pick them up during the holidays and for birthdays. The beauty community on TH-cam still focuses on new launches, hauls and decluttering - people who don’t create content in the beauty space have no reason to buy new products to test, review and compare for value and performance. When they like something they continue to use it until they don’t like it anymore and then get something else that’s similar.

    I have Naked 3 and I LOVE it! I overlooked it for a decade. I wanted a rosey palette and was choosing between Natasha Denona Retro, Huda rose quartz and naked 3. Rose quartz was too pink and Retro too red and warm (for me.) I think it sells well because there are so few cool leaning neutral palettes. It looks rosy just like my skin tone. If you get the chance to see it in person you can tell it has quite a bit of depth. That picture does not do it justice. It’s beautiful and very dimensional. I took a picture of it in the car and you can see all the multi color sparkle and it’s very wet looking on and I love that. It wears longer on me than Natasha Denona. I know it has Teflon in the formula. It was my first Urban Decay palette. I bought it just last year. It was over $50. I think it was $54 but I used a $15 off $50 coupon at Ulta. Ppl not super into make up, ime, aren't into formulas like that. They like a more build able, goof proof formula, which is why I think these palettes are so popular. I also think they have 1-2 palettes, use it up then repurchase bc it's familiar to them. Most of my friends have like 1 eye palette, 1-2 blushes, a lip product or two. And they buy the same stuff over and over.

    Kelly, when you say there are other palettes with similar shades, but better formula, I would LOVE to see a video on the *best* palettes you recommend. I am in the process of trying to find a high quality palette for my everyday looks, some of these older "basic" palettes are intriguing, but I wouldn't want something with a poor formula. The neutral Colourpop palettes at Target look nice, but I heard the formulas vary. I feel like when I see new palettes I'm like "oh, I have theses colors"... yeah, spread throughout 17 palettes that I won't take the time to open up for one look😆

    The beauty community is out of touch with the reality of everyone else aka people who don't consume beauty content and arent into makeup. I'm 29 and none of my friends spend nearly as much money on makeup or cosmetics as I do. For them its simply not a priority and they just arent interested in spending time, energy or coin on it. The last time they were "exploring" makeup was back in the days when these oldies were popular. They aren't aware of hot new brands or trending products because they aren't watching these videos or perusing the Sephora app like I do. I know people who are still faithfully using MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural because that product was on trend 6 years ago when they got into makeup but they've been checked out ever since.

The MAC Connect in Color palettes are a pretty new release for MAC. It's on their new releases page and I want to say the collection came out within the past couple of months. I can see why these would be so popular. Good enough bang for the bug, usable everyday colours as well as some with more impact, good amount of product. I am sure many of these consumers are busy women who don't have time to put too much thought into their makeup, who just want to feel good and presentable. Also, these names were so huge at a time when beauty gurus were all the rage... Maybe even people that really don't follow amd don't care were exposed to certain palettes and when they look for new makeup, they go for what looks familiar and they remember hearing good things about. You say the beauty community hates that stuff but it's mostly forgotten stuff that they used to be obsessed with at the time, before moving on. • @ligiaborges4528
    @ligiaborges4528 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As someone working at Ulta, I’ve realized that the average consumer just wants something that works and is reliable consistently. So most people do purchase items that the beauty community might deem “boring” which explains why so many businesses are still business giants, like UD, IT Cosmetics, Benefit, Tarte, Estee Lauder, Lancôme, etc. Whenever someone asks “how are these companies still in business?” it’s because the average makeup consumer just wants a reliable product. You wouldn’t believe how long some people have been purchasing the same products over and over and they are SOOOOO loyal to that list of products.

But sadly yeah, the formula is not good at all. The mattes were super patchy and the "shimmers" were worse than drugstore before drugstore got good. -- I have the Tartlette Jewel mini palette and it performs leaps and bounds better than In Bloom. In fact the shimmers are THE best formula I've tried of any brand so far. But Tarte is acting like they're going to discontinue Jewel!!! I truly hope not; it would be ridiculous if In Bloom continued on but a genuinely good palette like Jewel bit the dust. I bought a backup just in case.

    Estee Lauder Double Wear is a great foundation!! I have tons of foundation bottles in my collection (Armani, Nars, MAC, Charlotte Tilbury,...) and I always repurchase Double Wear when it runs out. It is extremely long-lasting, has a great shade range, and even though it is medium-to-full, if you mix it with a moisturizer or a face oil, it can be pretty light and feel like a skin tint that lasts FOREVER.
