It's one thing to watch/listen to a musician who is trying to be a star; but it takes talent and humility to play in such a way that the audience can hear the composer's voice in his music, not just the skill of those playing his music. I watched this to hear Alexander play Gershwin. I ended up hearing Gershwin play this through Alexander's hands! Bravo, Alexander, and thank you for sharing your talent and your passion!

This young man has been touched by a higher power. It’s not just that his technique is astonishing, but his connection to the music and its feeling is so deep. It touches me to my heart to hear a Russian young man play such an essentially American piece as if the music had been given to him at birth. The transcription of the Adagio from the Nutcracker pas de deux (his encore) is equally beautiful.

    • @richardbenitez7803

My thoughts exactly. I often expect the musician to play out what the composer intentions. I suppose that’s unfair for young listeners who expect more of a self expression.

Alexander Malofeev is the epitome of what a concert pianist should be. Utterly brilliant, of course. Technically faultless - certainly. But he also has a warmth and humanity with which he makes a deep, emotional connection with those listening. Just as he loves the music he is interpreting, so also the world will - in due course - love and treasure Alexander.

Malofeev has a real affinity for this music. I read somewhere that he loves jazz, and one can certainly hear that love in every measure of this piece. His brilliant playing is matched by superb interpretation by the orchestra under Pletnev's baton. The audio engineering of this recording is exceptional, revealing often-hidden gems of the orchestration that one misses entirely in other recordings. I have to say that this is my favorite recording of the immortal Gershwin Concerto in F. The encore is Pletnev's own transcription of the Pas de Deux from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker ballet. I say it is a transcription, but it is far more than that. It is a complete rethinking of the piece in pianistic terms reminiscent of the technical and artistic demands of Liszt and Rachmaninoff. The result is pure magic, again brought to life by Malofeev's sensitive and brilliant interpretation.

I am a true devotee of Alexander Malofeev’s genius. I see so much of Lang Lang’s brilliance in him. I see the same expressions in Malofeev’s eyes that say to me how much he appreciates the music of the composer-in this case that of Gershwin. Both of these outstanding pianists may play the music with their fingers but it’s the expression in their eyes that tell it all.
I can’t remember any other worldly pianist who has ever posted their playing a concert which included a masterpiece by Gershwin. Gershwin is so underrated as a great composer simply because many think of his composition, namely that of Rhapsody in Blue comprises his total output. So many think of that composition as not much more than a piece of music for the dance halls and not for the concert or performance halls. Gershwin was as much of a great composer as Prokofiev.
My hat off to you, Mr. Malofeev, for adding this wonderful piano concerto to your repertoire-truly a 5-star performance.

Reminds me of New York at the turn of the last century when Gershwin was a child. This is absolutely beautiful. Gershwin's parents were Russian. Russia is so proud. I'm sorry that Alexander's concert was cancelled in the U.S because he spoke out against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. So tragic that Russian artists and a prodigy like Alexander have to suffer because of Russia's monster president putin. So very tragic. Russian ballet dancers also suffered during the cold war before the fall of the Soviet Union. I remember reading about it in magazines when I lived overseas. Very very tragic.

In regards to the video direction..... i noticed this. In fact, i do see the Russians are very good with the camera to high light performance. I often see russian ballet groups. It is difficult to film ballet to bring out key individual performance as well as keep the lines of the ballet.

I feel that John Yarbrough's comment below has hit the nail very accurately on the head! When Alexander was (even) younger, he was asked about his interests and he mentioned jazz,, as this was intimately related to classical music. As far as I know Gershwin was (and probably still is) the only composer who has brought the two musical traditions so seamlessly together. I also feel that Alexander has conveyed that sense of 'a perfect marriage' between the two, that should satisfy every red-blooded American - as wall as delighting the heart of an old fuddy-duddy Englishman like me! This is a great achievement, Alexander! It will, I'm sure, bring many people, much younger than me, immense pleasure as they make this discovery.

He’s brilliant now, but can you imagine what musicians of his quality will be able to do in the future? With more control over their prowess. A pianist is more than a woman or man who plays the piano. There is much more to a mind which entertains the black and white keys of our mistress. Klavier. He’s beautiful and he has the sensitivity the pioneers of the instrument imagined would emerge. Hope he knows that we know the cost of what he transmits for us. Fantastic. #TitanusFarsee
