Paul, watching you work is zen for the brain. I could watch this for hours.
Thanks Robin, That is a very nice comment...
Hello Paul, came by again since a long time of absence but I am very happy that you are looking great and I enjoyed the whole steps for fitting the parts together. The absolute accuracy and pleasure you have is so relaxing. I send greetings from Germany (close to Cologne, where you had been somewhen in your career)! Have a good one and I will come by next week! 👍😘🌞🍀💪
The happiness and mile surprise in your voice when the chainring fit the crank-arm was delightful.
Thank you. Yes, I really do enjoy working in my shop, and I will do so until I physically can't...
It's such a pleasure to watch you work on any of your projects Paul. Hats off to Mitch for great camera work too.
Best wishes, Dean.
Thank you Dean, appreciate your comments!
Great video, Paul, Mitch. Just a thought.....Look up 'chrome reverse electroplating'. It may take the hassle out of grinding the chrome off, next time. Love your work.
Look for huck towels, sometimes called hospital towels because their primary usage is in hospitals. They're like painter's rags, but thicker and a courser weave.
The microfiber towels are great to have around when you want to wipe something clean like when you need to acetone parts for welding or to wipe things clean for reassembly. But man they are a pain when your machining around them that for sure. I like the box of rags that Lowe’s sells I think It’s T-Shirt materials they don’t attract chips/swarf.
The bike is going to be amazing!!!
Thanks Rick. I did find out that Home Depot still sells the painters rags online, not in the store. I did order, and they are cheaper too.. pack of 25 for $9....
Beautiful work of art coming together 🎉
Thank you Salvador. Can you tell I'm having fun?
Beautiful work and filming as always Paul and Mitch!
Hey Paul and Mitch, nice work on the chain ring! Those old Schwins bring back many childhood memories!
Thanks Tom, I do have a 60's Schwinn cruiser that I bought years ago at a garage sale in Lynden, WA for $20 cash. And Ignaz Schwinn did own the Excelsior Motorcycle Company...
Pure gold! Thanks for the great work in front of and behind the camera!
Thank you very much!
Paul I love you’re your.
And I get the ancient methods here, cotter pins for the crank to spindle, bolt through chainring to crank arm .
But I would have been interesting to keep the old with a bit of new, like a spline drive sprocket and some splines on the crank to spindle.
I enjoyed watching this sooo much!😊
Greetings from Croatia from Kris 😎
New fan here just found out about this channel a few weeks ago. Been digging through the old videos I love it all but what I've found is that over time Paul's hair sometimes looks like my grandfather's but sometimes it looks a like grandma's.
Yes, my hair has changed a lot. After chemo it all fell out. Thanks for watching....
Great video as always Paul and Mitch! 👍👍
Nice VTR 1000 in the workshop Paul, good engine😊
03:20 Yayyy! An actual cotter pin, called a cotter pin! ...as opposed to a split pin being called a cotter pin! 😂💪💪
Yikes….I did not know that!
When that bike is done and you take it out for a spin it's going to be like riding an old Singer sewing machine! Smooth, quiet, precise and that feeling you get when you're on something special! Well done!
Try searching muslin cloths or muttin cloths , which are the old school cleaning and polishing cloths with the hemmed edge . 😘
Probably mutton cloths
Great job Sir, that bike is starting to get close to being finished. Pretty sure you will be making the crank arms pieces of art.
Thank you Tom. Yes, I am waiting for the RH + LH taps for the pedals. I don't want to shape the cranks before the holes are threaded...
I did enjoy the machining. Now I am off to the garage to do arbor press upgrades.
that's a good fit 👍👍
Oh wise teacher. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching...
Always good to sit back and watch the master at work Paul, Looking well my friend. :) Dave From Australia
About the rags they sell the coton one at Canadian Tire in 3 pounds bag
Really enjoy getting an insight into your methods of work!
Thanks Cliff. I did work in machine shops when I left high school, but mostly self taught...
Beautiful workmanship, thanks for sharing your videos. 👍
i am really looking forward to seeing this bike completed and riding!
The rider would have to have very short legs. The top tube is extremely short. Did you notice that?
@@paulbrodie a longer stem, and longer seat tube could perhaps fix those issues :D
Hi in the UK you wipes are know as printers wipes and usually sold in big bags.
Damn, I was waiting for Paul to turn the crank at the end to see how much the chain tension varied.
Always been super curious as to how small the tolerances have to be, in order for the chain slack to look constant... Would've also been good to see a close view of the chainring teeth as the ring turned on its shiny new centre bore.
OK, when the cranks are done and the wheel is built we will spin things and see how we do....
The best machine is the one with simple plain high quality parts. Thank you Mr Brodie…and Mitch….
Continually awed by your artistry/engineering/talent and skill! Each video is humbling and inspiring! Go Paul and Mitch, keep moving forward and thank you for sharing your expertise!
Thank you from both of us....
Cloth baby dipper's are the best rags you can get. No kidding.
Fun to watch
very nicely done sir
Good show, guys!
That silver solder goes on like butter.
Yes, that went well. It's not always like that, especially if you are just learning....
thank you Paul
Thanks.
Nicely done,love your creations
Hello Paul, great video but I must say I just become entranced watching you silver solder, it’s the best! Regards Kevin.
Educational and inspirational
Thank you.
@@paulbrodie Thank you twice as much 😁
Brilliant as always
A very enjoyable video!
Thank you Pat.. Appreciate your comments!
Its progressing well.
Thanks Tom, I think you are 100% correct...
Thanks!
I knew the heat would warp the sprocket. The great Slastuvovich knows all, sees all.
The new microfiber rags are Chip Swiffers.
I love watching you work, and talk! Do you feel up to some work on the Cub in the near future? No pressure, just asking.
Thank you.. Yes, spring is here soon, and the Cub will be fired up and ridden on local country roads
Look up recycled surgical/huck towels. You won't be disappointed.
Maker of the Brodie hat,the quintessential helmet of WWI and 2.Partially used by the Americans until 1942.
👏👏👏👌
Cheers Chris
There you are! Hi Chris, hope you are well...
I have picked up those rags at Princess Auto
Hello Paul,
MEWATEX
I think this is what you were looking for in terms of cleaning cloths.
my son has these at work.
greeting
Holger
Thanks Holger. I did find my favourite ones at Home Depot... they are only sold on-line..
Spin it! I want to see the lateral runout on the chainring...
I want to see how much the chain slack varies!
Best shop rags (new) is at SAMS CLUB
You mighty be able tofind the Terry cloth rags at a local paint store in bulk or if you have a Value or Ace Home improvement store.
Hey Paul, didn't you put the chainring out of center by clamping it on the equal teeth with a chuck that ve a 120° split? I made a quick sketch and got some offset there. // I measured around 0.23mm offset
That was my thought (scare) too, from there on I was like; well all is out the window now… I cannot stop Paul, nor should I… he knows what he’s doing for sure. But we are all waiting for that first drivetrain spin and look how constant the chain tension is and see how good everything is lined up and round. Fingers crossed, and Paul, you are doing a damn fine job with this bike!
old washed cotton bed sheets paul work well
😍😍😍😍😍
18:45 Is that a Super Hawk back there?
Have you tried Harbor Freight? They have what looks like the same wrag as those.
When the bike is finished .will ther be alot of force goin trough that crank stud ?
Are u puting cotter pins in crank to chain wheel axle?
Yes, I am using cotter pins like a lot of older bikes used. Not sure what you mean by "crank stud" ? Are you referring to the BB axle as the "chain wheel axle"? Your terminology is a wee bit imprecise! But, thanks for watching and commenting!

amazing craftsmanshp
is it possible to buy you guys cofee in euros from the eu?
Princess auto sells the hemmed shop rags. 50 for 29.99
If you did it again would you leave more material at the crank so you could machine a built in spacer?
John, your question is unclear.. More material where? The crank arm, the chainring, the axle?
U-line sells cotton terry cloth towels.
"A fitting end is to see if it fits"....was there any doubt?
Call it the heart chain ring.
Rags, look for recycled medical rags. They are cheap and work well.
Are those rags 'muslin' or 'cheesecloth'?
I haven't found microfibre very good as 'rags'
I found my favourite rags at Home Depot. They are only sold on-line, not in store....
I cant believe you didn't turn the crank arm paul.
I have a bunch of NOS cranks by various CNC makers, 2 cast titanium by Onza and one by MoraTi back in the day
his patience and craftsmanship are something that maybe a few true old school builders have and something modern builders will hardly understand. not to mention the industry
microfiber grabs everything, they're annoying, but they can also be a little hydrophobic on top of everything so they're not even good for washing windows or other water based things. I'm not sure what they are good for- maybe they're just a way to use plastic instead of cotton for cheapness?
i wanna buy u coffee
🔩⚙️🔩⚙️🔩👍
a lot of camera movement on this episode
Hate when music starts playing. That means the end of the video
they dont make em like they used to
As a BMX rider, I am bothered by the fact you keep calling the bottom bracket spindle an axle.... 😂
I can't stand microfiber cloths. I buy from a second hand charity clothes store near me who sells me giant garbage bags of clean torn/stained cotton shirts for $5 ea.
I can’t stand the feel of micro fiber, but Walmart sells a roll of them for 15$, and they are thinner and are somewhat reusable, you can wash them a couple times depending on what your doing. I can kinda get used to them though.
@@jcnpresser Me either, if I have to use them I always wear gloves lol.
@@TheUncleRuckus so annoying how they stick to you, and anything they absorb just spills right out of them
👍🇺🇦
lousy camerawork, can't see Jack, sack him, unwatchable
Always great to see you machining so accurate…feels like putting some extra love into every part, especially this heartfelt chainring❤️
