Videos like this make me glad a game like Pal World came out. Whether it really does become a powerhouse contender with Pokemon in the "Catch Monsters" genre doesn't matter, it's shown that the genre is starved for new ideas, and Pokemon can't just rest on its laurels anymore.

@@Taz-ey4jla lot of the things in Palworld are ALREADY in Pokemon... Just not the games. Yes, that includes butchering the Pokemon for food.
And what little the game has, Palworld has it too and does it significantly better. Not to mention it has ideas that people wanted Pokemon to do day 1 it went 3D.
Meanwhile, most innovation GameFreak's shown in a long time was Arceus Legends, and is the closest thing fans wanted for years but fell short in various aspects. Aspects fans hope that would be touched upon on Scarlet and Violet, and for some reason they took a step back in those aspects

Palmon's kind of a bad example because the Pokemon appeal is incredibly surface level.
I checked the game out as an avid Pokemon fan and was thoroughly disappointed that it's just not an open world Pokemon like it seems from the outside. It's just rust with a bit of monster collection. Or any other survival craft game, just with Pokemon designs as automation devices.
Not to say that it's a bad game, but it's not a good Pokemon contender, if it doesn't remotely scratch the same itch.
It'd be like saying "good thing Dark Souls came out to really show people how you do the Starcraft formula right".

@@Taz-ey4jl Maybe not anymore, but in the canon, Pokemon used to war with the humans of the setting, and there's a lot of complicated relationships between people and pokemon even today.
What Palworld does is different from Pokemon; it's a parallel market within the same genre. It's a healthy competition, instead of an unhealthy one-upsmanship competition. Pokemon's never had things like base-building mechanics or made you feel like your pokemon truly lived alongside you in the games. In the Manga and Anime, sure, absolutely, but we're talking about the games here. What would be the logistical capabilities of my trainer going out and catching an entire herd of Tauros to be used as work animals? No Pokemon game has broached that concept, and it's a vast untapped market in their fanbase. That's Palworld's key to success.

The "racism" thing with Shadow is an out of context joke. There are alien tenticle monsters in Shadow the Hedgehog (the game) with dark skin and everyone in the game calls then "black creatures"..cause..well..obviously...they're alien creatures with black skin/scales/hide/whatever.

I agree with most of what he said, but I'll stand by laughing at Geeta.
He compared Geeta to trainers that use multiple of the same pokemon, but like, we don't laugh at her for being uncreative or anything, we laugh at her for apparently not understanding her own team. She has a pokemon that gets stronger for every ally that's been defeated... and leads with it. She also has a pokemon that sets up toxic spikes when it gets hit... and uses it last. You could literally just swap the order of those two pokemon and the fight would be like twice as hard.
I'm not trying to say that makes the newer games inherently bad or anything, but it's absolutely worth making fun of.

They just LOST something in that transition to 3D, unable to keep me interested, and it wasn't helped by how they STILL haven't figured out 'how 2 3D'. I wouldn't be shocked to find there are still animations from stadium 1 in use in scarlet and violet.
I guess, I did enjoy OR/AS quite a bit, but that was more 'gen 3 remake is still gen 3 and reasonably good'. I also dipped out on Mystery Dungeon with SMD. SMD felt so very dumbed down it was insulting, both from a writing standpoint and from a mechanical one. The handholding was insufferable.
Personally, I feel the series truly 'peaked' with either Platinum or HG/SS. Those were the ones that felt the most content complete to me. B/w and it's sequel pair were pretty decent, but they felt 'small' in comparison, and were starting to go a little too heavy on 'story' for me.
I played the originals on a DMG-01 as well. I swear to god I could throw that thing down a flight of stairs and it'd leave the floor worse off than the device. My family referred to it as the game brick. It was the nokia 3310 of handheld game consoles. Makes me feel really old, but it seems odd to me, that I can still MASSIVELY enjoy new pokemon games via fanworks, despite the official ones just being bleh to me.

Sounds like they could fix a lot of this if they had just included occlusion culling... don't render things entirely in 3D, only the side that faces you/is visible. So that couch would not have a back to it if you were in front, the doors would only have one side, etc., and none of that would matter, as you don't need to render stuff that you can't SEE in the first place. Saves a massive amount of processing power for the GPU if done correctly.

After all the drama around Sword/Shield trimming down the Pokedex, I think fans would outright riot if they cut ALL the previous Pokemon. Some of the drama was because it was poorly communicated and the justification didn't make a lot of sense, but some of it was just "You didn't put my favorite Pokemon in this game!"
Personally I think it would be better too, but they unfortunately established the precedent of transferring Pokemon forward to newer games very early on with Gold/Silver, and changing that would piss off a lot of people. The point is, they deliberately chose to move away from the past pokemon, which was a good idea. Most people don't pay attention to the setting as such. Especially since the concept of "different settings have distinctly different pokemon" was thrown out the window more or less instantly.
Again: It would make sense for Sword and Shield too, no? Since it's obviously based on the British Isles. All they did was have some different evolutions/versions of familiar pokemon

Here’s something I think about a lot: old Pokémon games had bugs too. The first game had some mechanical issues, like some moves not working (there’s a move that’s supposed to increase attack power, but it actually decreased it) and there’s a 1/256 bug where 100% hit moves have a 1/256 chance of missing. Thing is, I didn’t learn about these until recently. They aren’t obvious glitches. That’s part of the problem to me, anyone can see the problems nowadays. The original game wasn’t perfect, but it visually worked and it wasn’t obvious it had some issues. Now games release too soon and you can just immediately tell its buggy.

When it comes to reusing the 3D models, the issue isn't that they did it, the issue is that they used it as the excuse for why they removed the full national Dex. They lied and said it would be too much work to make all the models.
Game freak is mostly responsible for how shit the Pokémon games have become, regardless of who makes the models. They still develop the buggy shit, with lackluster mechanics and increasingly dead cities and landscapes, because honestly Gamefreak hasn't grown to the challenge of being the developers of the biggest IP of all time. The Pokemon IP deserves better, something that Gamefreak doesn't seem capable or willing to give. I will never believe anyone who ever says they "miss the days of scarlet and violet". Perhaps someone will look fondly on their time playing it, but it will never be considered good.
When it comes to the designs, the issue was never that cutesy cartoony Pokémon never existed, or that humanoid Pokémon never existed. The issue is that there used to be a balance between cutesy and more rough Pokémon, and there were fewer humanoid Pokémon, who were usually way less human like. Most of the time they were just bipedal animals.
We've gone from a humanoid Pokémon once in a while, to almost all starters becoming something between bipedal to just a human in a spandex and mask. The worst part is that they start off on all 4 legs, but then stand up. It's weird. I don't want my best buddy pet I've nurtured throughout the whole game turn into a weird almost human thing. Imagine how weird it would be if your real pet went biped after a few years, with human legs and arms.

So I've seen a series do menu prompt stores well. The World Ends With You series does a really good job with giving their shops all a unique vibe while also being just menus that pop up. The shops being menus in Pokemon would be forgivable if the menus weren't so cookie cutter they looked like stock assets.

Lucario to Meowscarada is a false equivalency. Lucario was always humanoid, there is no stage of its like wherein it isn't humanoid. Meowscarada and Incineroar both start off as normal cats and at varying points in their evolution just decided to be people.
That's not even mentioning the last sighting of a cat that evolves and isn't humanoid when it does so was Generation 5, which was 14 years ago.

Another thing the video missed. The issue isn't that they used and upscaled old assets, the issue is that they said they were scaling back on things like the National Dex so they could improve the animations and models, and then were proven to have just used the old models and very few new animations anyway.

To boil down all of my thoughts, the Pokémon series has peaked well over 20 years ago but there’s no definitive answer on which set of games were the greatest. You have Emerald, Platinum, Heart Gold, Soul Silver, and the Gen 5 games. At some point, without any personal bias, the original fans who grew up with the series have been slowly losing interest and in GF attempt to find a new audience they’ve never branched outside of their older audiences. The Pokémon designs used to be simple and easy, some were given more real life references and inspirations like Son Wukon and Japanese yokai, but lately the designs have gotten too overdrawn and lost all sense of subtlety. There are still creative ideas in the recent Pokémon games, including Sword/Shield, Legends Arceus, and Scarlet/Violet but they’re either underdeveloped, never got enough development, failed to deliver a fulfilling experience, or any combination of the above. They’ve become products with dwindling passion and the fans, in return, aren’t willing to leave the franchise but are eager to voice their disdain.

Really if you need to make every single asset in a game from nothing 6 years is kind of quick. Now we have games that can and do use base assets as is the normal practice now in 3D model devlopment to save on time of redoing what you already did but it leads to forgetting how to do what you did to get to the point that the 3D model was close to what was wanted so more polygons were made to cover up mistakes and a note was made to fix it later. Later never comes and that is the issue with many long lasting devlopment studios that have a common code base for everything.

Been debunked for a while now. People have had data on cartridges, on the sd card, on the system memory, no matter what the problems still happen, the game just doesn't work and hasn't since day 1. A lot of people report not having the issues, which I don't believe for a second, but some people report more than others so maybe some individual copies are just better. I've had a high budget SD card, doesn't work. I've used system memory, doesn't work. My buddy had a physical copy, didn't work.
The egregious glitches like monster trainers and awooga eyes are a multiplayer only thing (and are also pretty funny so as bad as they are they're a smaller issue), which just indicates that the game wasn't intended for multiplayer and it probably got thrown in at the finish line. The performance is because of data leaks and terrible optimization, which has been proven since saving the game and resetting them did improve performance for maybe an hour before having to do it again. This is probably why its reported to be better on system memory or whatever, you're saving and transferring it which requires a reset that temporarily fixes it a bit.

I will say about pokemon, at least it doesn't need a 5GB+ patch on launch day to work, unlike western AAA titles, though pokemon has been increasingly western since like Gen IV. I love platinum, but man diamond and pearl really suffered in pace for non interactive elements.
But the games were VERY unfinished. GF/Nintendo REALLY need to contract out a lot of the work or spend more time in development. Pokemon doesn't NEED to be an annual release. Or if it does, release ports of the older games. Like re-release RBY again to delay the game, and re-release Gen 1 stuff for the TCG. Or GBC and gen 2, or RSE and Gen 3. Or FrLg and Gen 1. They have so much that they could both spend more time to make actually great games (like the Zelda franchise) and still fucking print money.
I also have to defend Nintendo a bit because Mario and Zelda are also giant nintendo franchises, and they don't suffer from pokemon's issues. GF is the isolated factor there. GF really sucks at programming (seeing how barely Gen 1 functions, and how easy Gen IV is to break), and they don't do better rushing themselves to keep up with the whole multimedia of the TCG and toys.

I just stopped buying games about 10 years ago, along with most media altogether. It takes a lot of coverage before I put money into something. But man when I swim the indie seas and find something genuine it revitalizes my soul.

The designs in gwn 3 where just eh but the game itself just had more heart to it than the modern releases

I feel the only real thing keeping modern pokemon games afloat (besides legends arceus cuz that game is actually godlike) is the fact that modern games in general are just so ass. I told my brother S/V ain't my thing, but it's still better than 80% of junk being pumped out nowadays.

Monster Hunter Rise is a Switch game yet even in that you can see Large monsters from one side of the map to the other lmao.
