What would be the Sonic Youth standard tuning? I mean, what's the tuning they use the most?
Literally had 0 idea what I was watching this just my favorite song
I learned guitar by teaching myself Sonic Youth songs, endlessly rewinding and playing back tapes and CDs to discern the separate guitar parts. Kool Thing is one I never got around to, and I love this tutorial. I always bastardized the tunings as best I could. I don't know how you could have picked out the alternate tuning, but I'm gonna play around with this one. I love SY's open droney sitar tunings.
Smiled the whole time watching this. Sonic Youth - Sunday would be great fun to watch and listen to.

Love this Sonic Youth song. It reminds me of Sister era SY. Love Goo as well, this tune just reminds me of a lot of the Sister tunes.
The chuck D feature prevents it from sounding that much like Sister though. But if it could go on Sister it could easily be on Daydream Nation.
thats one of those tunes thats so mucb fun up loud i really love this era of music man its like the joy i got when i learnt to play feel the pain by dinosaur jr and i plugged my guitar in out in my man cave and blasted the neighborhood with it i couldnt get the smile off my face cheers man

just be sure to get enough different tuned guitars haha :) ! Maybe some day a special pedal would have all presets for each SY tunings

So around 89-90 when I was in high school I really was getting into Sonic Youth.
My dad who grew up listening to classical and jazz was really getting into the Kronos Quartet. I couldn't stand when he played Kronos, it just sounded so weird.
One day my dad got home from work and I was listening to "Goo" he asked me who it was, I responded "Sonic Youth." He asked me what I liked about them, I responded "They're playing with distortion, key changes, re-tuning their guitars, even using screwdrivers to play."
"Huh" dad said, "and you don't like Kronos."
I have since grown to love Kronos and I still love Sonic Youth.
Haha that’s a great story, I’m a big fan of Chick Corea who I got into after reading Alex Skolnick from Testament (loved thrash back in the day!) listened to them. Always good to keep an open mind, you could be missing out. Hopefully your dad’s into Sonic Youth now too 😊🤘
@@LetsPlayAll I could never get my dad into any music that was artificially amplified or created. He was a bit of a purist. I did kind of get him into Massive Attack during a long road trip once. Sadly, he's no longer here.
Mom's pretty open minded about hearing new music and I go her listening to some of the songs of my youth.

@@LetsPlayAll They’d pretty much tour with a stack of guitars. Generally having/keeping one tuning to each guitar. Probably helps keeping them in tune too
@@lockyp204 yea I’d imagine back then jags and jazzmasters were cheaper to buy too. Very cool band tho, I’m not massively familiar with them but starting to dig into their back catalogue! 😀🤘
@@LetsPlayAll The trilogy of Daydream Nation, Goo, and Dirty is a good place to start. And the early albums of Sister and Evol are worth a listen also 👍 Pawnshop Jazzmasters. They must have been the days 😃

Hi I saw on the official Sonic Youth website in the section of their different tunings that this song it was same tuning but just the B and E which reversed. Did you make a typing error or did you intentionally reverse the two notes ? In any case your video is really awesome , great Work 👍

This is easily the best Sonic Youth tutorial I have found. As a bit of a beginner, I am still having trouble with the rhythm of the main riff though. When it is played at tempo (by you or SY), I can't hear the second double strum on the open strings (at the beginning of the second bar), I can only hear one strum. And when I try and fit both strums in, it sounds wrong. Any tips?
