  • Hello friends!
    I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
    Today I am starting the exploration of Quinacridone pigment family with Quin Maroon PR206, a pigment that is unfortunately not being manufactured any longer. Should you buy a tube from the remaining stock before it disappears from the market?
    I will be swatching and comparing paints by Daniel Smith, Winsor and Newton, M.Harding, Schminke, QOR .
    I will also try, as usual, some mixes!
    Hereafter you can find the link to the introduction to the Quinacridone family: • Quinacridone Quintet b...
    My main source of information for this video is Handprint:

    I buy my art supplies on Momarte, my favourite online store which always has sales and special offers: www.momarte.com/?aff=44 (they ship internationally and are very helpful and kind). This is an affiliated link that will support my channel without costing you any extra money.

    PS: Elisabeta, just like you I adore every colour I have. Each time I hydrate a colour I take a breath and think- Wow that's lovely! It's what keeps me addicted- all those massive hits of pleasure. Even dull old Yellow Ochre: with a drop of water it is transformed into something Soo Delicious! (I can smell mustard on Frankfurters...)

    What a wonderful video, Esliabetta! Thank you. That Michael Haring is stunning, as usual! I checked the W&N website and they still sell PR206 Brown Madder but they will soon switch to the Perylene PR179 version! M. Graham already has. A Gallo offers QUINACRIDONE CHESTNUT which is based on PR206.

    Thank you so much for this information about pigment PR206 being discontinued. One of my favorite browns is W&N Brown Madder. I immediately ordered the big 37ml tube which arrived today and is the right pigment. I was worried it would be the new version PR179. I also have a small amount of Daniel Smith Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet and a small amount of Sennelier Permanent Alizarin Crimson Deep which is also PR206 but not nearly as pretty as W&N or DS. I think W&N version has a cleaner look than DS but they are both very pretty.

      Hi Kim! I think that you 37 ml tube should last for a very long time! It feels good to have it! Thanks a lot for sharing it here. I also prefer the browner PR206 compared to the reddish one…take care! Elisabetta

    I think I'll get the WN tube because it's a whiopper at 37mls! It's some 20 pounds here in England from Jaxons which is not a bad deal and, as you show, it's very pigmented and it'll last forever. I love this range of hues, the deep earthy reds and maroons, for flesh tones as well as spilled blood in horror scenes etc. (Turner's PR175 Brown Madder is really gorgeous and so are the deeper PR101 Indian Reds and such... and so cheap too.) Oh and I also use the Cotman Alizarin Hue you show here: also v successful for flesh mixes... and pretty in its own right. I keep a tin box with tubes of great Cotman standbys: great value and a drop or two of glycerin helps them along.

    Hi Elisabetta! I did not know that this color was being discontinued, that is sad to hear. I have the W&N Cotman Alizarin Crimson Hue, but I don't actually use it much out of concerns with Alizarin Crimson being fugitive, as you mentioned in your video. Is the Cotman line also fugitive? By the way, I really like the Perylene Maroon that you swatched out. Is it from Daniel Smith? That is the one I have in my palette. Like you have said, it is more of a dark red and is PR 179. Anyway, thank you for the nice video and have a great day! :)

I know it is redder than the DS version, but I haven’t tried it; you confirm it, anyway! Thanks a lot for stopping by! I can almost wish you a great weekend! It’s almost Friday here in Italy. @@WatercolorElisabetta It’s not very difficult to rewet Roman Szmal but it does take time. It’s best to just wet them for 2-3 mins before using them. W&N just seems to announce they will replace the pigment instead of "discontinuing the color" in a sense
      The pigment as far as I know has been discontinued, it has more to do with other, bigger industries that buy said pigments (automotive industry) not being a client/interested in such colors anymore, so the manufacturers dont really see a reason to keep producing it if the bug guys arent going to buy it so they just stop. That or overall it just wasn't a good business
      I'm inclined to think or especulate this was the case because other causes would be producing the pigment was banned dur to toxicity to people or the enviroment, but id think if that was thd case the info wouldve been out by now

    • @WatercolorElisabetta
      @WatercolorElisabetta  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, Madder Brown will be produced using a different pigment. The reason for Quin Gold PO49 being discontinued is the lack of interest from main client, I.e., the automotive industry. However, watercolour manufacturers replaced the pigment with a “hue”. That’s why I mentioned to make sure the label says PR206….thanks for your reply, and make sure you have some stock!!
