- Quinacridone Gold (Hue) is a watercolor I have really enjoyed using over the last few months but I have never tried the original PO49 pigment due to it being discontinued long before I ever started painting.
Lucky for me a wonderful subscriber sent me a pan of genuine PO49 to try 🙏☺️
Here I compare it to some Quinacridone hues that have replaced it and I also have a few goes at mixing a quin gold hue myself.

I have a tube of the original Daniel Smith Quin. Gold, P049, with a bit still squeezed out on one of my older palettes, but I don't love it more than the Quin. Golds available now. It's become annoyingly precious for having been discontinued. I have several tubes of discontinued pigments. If they mattered that much, I'd have used them up by now. 😁
I have original PO49 (I bought a bunch of tubes when it was announced it was gone) and it's a staple for me. I do like the hues I also own--QoR (closer to DS's Quin Gold Deep which I also have and love), Roman Szmal, Sennelier. I often use it as a yellow in a triad for a sketch or painting.

I like using the quin gold hue I have as the yellow in a triad too. Mixes lovely natural greens.
wait what?! PY129 and PR122?! i'll have to try that. the genuine quin gold seems a lot more orange compared to the rest. out of the four, i'm liking the roman szmal a lot~ i think one of their new colours is another quin gold hue but made with PR101 instead of PO48, probably pigment sourcing issue. thanks for the great vid!
Thank you 🙏 PY129 and PR122 seems to be what handprint says. I might have read it wrong though which would explain why I couldn't get anything good from the mix 🤣 Let me know if it works for you?
Py150 dominates in the mix. Py150 alone does the trick for me
man, i'm glad i'd bought the *Holbein* version. i'd heard chatter it was a really great version of quin gold, and i have to agree! love the texture on it out of all your swatches. but the roman szmal mix you did is prob my second favorite (maybe tied with your DS + DV swatch at the very end 🙂)
hoping you did do that vid on mixes, greens and such, with quin gold and nickel azo yellow.... i haven't come across it yet but i'll go searching just in case. (if not, i hope you do make one! it's nice to see what other artists tend to mix, what they use, etc.)
I really like the ones you made yourself but I too always go for the convenience mixes 😆
I still have part of an old tube of Quin Gold PO 49 from Daniel Smith and the colour is much brighter gold colour when diluted with water. Somewhat different than your original. Jane Blundell had a swatch on her website that you may want to check out.

I am using Daniel Smith's quninacridone gold, which is the two pigment version. It is really a great color which also mixes well with other colors. Holbein isn't very available in Europe and very costly, if you have to order it. Thank you for all your comparisons
Very well-done mixes, you inspired me to try some on my own! It's a good moment to look for alternatives since our trusty PO48 has been discontinued just like PO49.

edit : a lovely person who replied to me said that the color that I'm talking about isn't PO49 and is in fact from the White Nights range. So ridiculously happy that I can still get this color 🥳🥳🥳
Oh, also - in one of her older videos (top 40 colors) In Liquid Color showed PO49 (it was called Indian Gold) in Winsor Newton range (I assume it hasn't been around for ages) and I have to say WOW. It was like DS one on steroids - gorgeous, even more luminous, a bit more orange than earthy and it would've been just perfect for me. Too bad it's been gone for so long that nobody even remembers it anymore 😅
That's White Nights' Indian gold. And it's a hue and not the real PO49. Indian gold is still available in the market. And yes, it is a luminous colour.

Most are great but love Holbein and Roman S are favorites.
Great video - I really like that the colours seem very close to reality! I have a bit of original DS PO49, but when that ends the Holbein one looks interesting.
I would love it if you did the same kind of video for the original New Gamboge (it was also discontinued some time ago). It's one of my favourite colours - I tried a few alternatives, but none compare to the original. With a tiny bit left, I'm starting to get nervous 👀😬😢

The original quin gold was more orange. The nightshade looks pretty much as I remember it. I think if it came back now, everyone would say its too dull because we’re all used to the glow of PY150 in most of the hues, hahaha. You did a great job on your mixes! I’m surprised at the texture in the Holbein, neither PY150 or PO48 are known for having any texture. I wonder when WN will have to reformulate their version, since PR206 has been discontinued. Although there is still years of supply left, I still stocked up on my WN favorites, Permanent Alizarin Crimson and Brown Madder.

Daniel Smith and Lunar earth mix is my fave!😊
I prefer to mix my own with Quin Burnt Orange or Trans Red Oxide (richer than the PO48 and offers some granulation) with Nickel Azo Yellow. All DS. Most of my colours are single pigment. Those that aren’t, tend not to get a place on my palette. Thanks for the upload. Good to compare 👍🏼 EDIT: wow, I thought the Lunar Earth wasn’t going to work, but it’s really nice! I’ll give that one a go 👊🏼 ANOTHER EDIT: I just tried mixing DS Quin. Coral with Burnt Sienna and Nickel Azo Yellow. It’s real nice imo.

This was a great comparison video. I never used the original PO49s, so I dont really know what Im missing. To me the Holbein having granulation sounds strange because they are known for having such fine pigment. I havent tried many Holbein paints either. I have tried the White Nights Indian Gold and think its athicker and darker version ( more brown) ,but still in the same league. I really like how you even made your own mixes. Theres no hiding that PY150. Haha It just glows.
It was a lot of fun trying to mix my own hues. I couldn't mix anything that replicated the texture of the Holbein though. I'm actually liking the Roman Szmal one more and more each time I use it.
I would like you to also try the Maimeri Blu watercolors and compare, for example, cadmium red or Pyrrolo red and cerulean with the Daniel Smiths
Daniel Smith sold real Quin Gold PO49 right up until 2017. They bought the last of the stock from the remaining pigment supplier around 2010, enough to last them 7 more years. I was aware it was going out early so I stocked up on it and a few other convenience colors mixed with it. Other brands couldn't get any more PO49 because DS took it all. I find that Winser & Newton's quin gold hue matches the closest to Daniel Smiths real PO49. I have several other hues also. Your PO49 is much like my old Quin Gold Deep PO49 by Daniel Smith. They had both the deep and regular in PO49.

I have the Daniel Smith quin gold. I like it just fine, but that Holbein is lovely on your chart. Another paint to try. 😂

Other comparison videos (Denise/in liquid colour + oto Kano) compare the old ds o49 to your preferred Holbein y150/o48, so you might find that useful for gauging how orange that nightshade o49 is.

3:45 Nah it's ok, we all have our preferences :D I have the hue and the original quin gold of DS but I prefer using the hue, probably because of the brightness that py150 gives. Or maybe I'm just scared of running out of po49 LOL. When my DS hue runs out I'll switch to Holbein because it's way cheaper in my country and I like that granulation I'm seeing.
After seeing your swatches, I may need to buy some Holbein Quin Gold. Quin Gold is the “go-to” yellow on my palette, but I may be too reliant on it. It is the perfect color for winter grasses in our salt marshes, and thinned and mixed with Quin Violet, it’s the perfect sand color. But the PY 150 makes it much too vibrant in sunsets. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to try PO49.
I hope you like the Holbein if you decide to try it.
I keep wondering if I would be happy with quin gold as the only yellow on my palette but I can't give up my raw sienna and cadmium lemon.
Fascinating! I am tempted to get the Nightshade paint just to say I have it. But I do like the Holbein-which I don't have. And I like the DS PY150 + DaVinci ( one of my very favorite paints) PBr7.
Haha go for it! I do like the Holbein a lot but maybe that's just because it's the one I'm most familiar with?

@@JayNathanWatercolor They have truly stunning earth colors. Their Quin Orange is the best out there. Kim Crick loves their Burnt Umber.
Good luck getting them to actually send you paint…I was not so fortunate and they never sent my paints, and they don’t respond to emails…
This might not fit the Quina-Gold theme as well as the other comments. But I tease out a lovely Quinacridone Rose'ish / Quinacridone Coral 'ish color by mixing Quin Gold and Opera rose.
(And Opera Rose gives really vibrant violets with most blues... I know - not the topic here ;-)
Thanks for the nice comparison. Never tried the original pigment, but I have used Roman Szmal, Jackson's and W&N Quin. Gold Hues. I prefer the W&N because it has a wider value range and it isn't as yellow as most. The Holbein looks very beautiful though with this texture. All the mixes you made look really lovely. I use quin gold mixed with pv55 and pv29 a lot. I also use it diluted in my first staining layer when I want an area to glow with warm light. For a long time it has served as the only yellow in my palettes.
You're very welcome. I often wonder if I could use it as the only yellow in my palette but still rely on raw sienna or yellow ochre.
I can see what you mean about the W&N quin gold. I'll have to experiment mixing with each of them to see what they can do.
They use PY150 and PBr101 in Schmincke's Quin Gold Hue - I guess it's hard to recreate the original pigment ^^' - I like my hue and never used the original so I guess I'm just as sacrilegious as you are ;)

The Nightshade website is unusual. They don't give much (any) info about who they are and show no swatches of the paints. They do use some interesting pigments, like PR88 and this PO49, which is fun. I kind of think they'd be talking up how they got hold of PO49 and showing off swatches, given how rare it is now. Their paints look interesting. I wonder what the rest of their line is like.
Jane Blundell used W&N PY150 (Burnt Sienna) and PR101 as her Quin Gold hue, very similar to the mix of those you tried out, except her PY150 was Daniel Smith. I'd expect more of a PY150 glow in that mix and I am wondering if the W&N PY150 isn't as, well, glowy as some others. QoR uses the more usual PY150 + PO48 and because of their luminous PY150 it really glows, a lot like the Holbein and RS in your swatches. Your videos have made me interested to try Holbein watercolors!

On my computer monitor, the Nightshade Quin Gold PO39 looks MUCH more orange than my original Daniel Smith Quin Gold. I have several tubes of Daniel Smith's original quin gold, and I have a swatch book like Denise Holden's (In Liquid Color), My swatches of the two hues - have White Nights, Turner - are closer to the original DS PO49 than the Nightshade swatch in the video. While the original PO49 does not have as bright a yellow undertone when tinted out as the hues (based on PY150) , my QG swatch at the lightest tint looks like a warm yellow - NOT an orange.

I was actually thinking of mixing PR179 and PY150, only I don’t have either 😄
Instead of PO48, here are some pigments I was thinking of: PR206, PR209, PR207, PR149, PR122, PR202.
They might all work. I'll try the PR179 and PY150 and let you know how it goes.

My first guess was mixing bits of Rembrandt's Burnt Sienna and Pyrrole Orange with just a touch of White Night's Indian Yellow (PY150). Hard to say as I have my tablet's screen as the only reference here, but it seems to me a close match to your Nightshade's QG swatch. Not sure if it's as vibrant or transparent, though. Gotta test it again and check other references as well. ^^

Seems they discontinued PO48 and/or PR206 too. They were used to make the hue alongside PY150.
How I wish the automotive industry would bring back PO49 so that artist paints would use this again. Though I like the goldness of PY150. Kinda like Indian Yellow or Yellow Ochre with a punch. 🧡

Seems PR206 is the one being discontinued. PO48 is safe for now, though I don't know how long.
That "Nightshade" color is very nice! I have "Nickel Quinacridone Gold" by M.Graham and it's very lovely... made with PO 48 & PY 150
The mixtures look too yellowish to me, then I can mix it myself from PY150 and PO48. Then PY150 also has a use for me.
I don't really get along with this colour and I didn't know where I need it for, it was included in a colour set that I bought.
I think I've got use to the hues being very yellow and I'm a fan of PY150 too. I can understand why some people don't like it though. It can have a bit of a harsh, acidic look to it.
