I’d say Usopp is the only character they need to work on bc he always seems be apart of the crew but not really. It’s really going to be interesting to see how they do Chopper, Franky, and Brook. Also are they gonna make Robin black (dark skin) pre time skip and white post time skip like in the anime lol.

      I agree. I am just a casual fan (and was an adult when the anime started). I think that the Netflix version did a very good job of mixing-and-matching arcs of the anime. @@WarrenGdog28 I returned to the anime after watching the live-action. I now remember why I stopped all those years ago. The early arcs were aimed at a younger audiende, I couldn't watch at 1.5 speed, and, TBH, I am still bothered a bit by the fact that the Heroes are pirates and seem to kill a lot of marines (many of whom are probably "good guys" similar to Koby). That last bit is the kind of thing that tends to pop up in my brain during the foggy moments when I wake up in the middle of the night, though.

      @pederslothzuricho7685 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100% Agree but history shows idiots are in charge:
      First time since The Lord of the Rings By Peter Jackson, someone took something goofy seriously enough to not treat it with ridicule or apathy. But instead treating it with the utmost care and attention to detail such that it springs a fiction world that is BELIEVEABLE. That is the biggest single most important thing i was told by a games producer once, and what it means is not that we can buy a character or that we believe the premise of the show... but that the entire Míse en Scene is cohesive enough to believe that it could exist. The Goofyness works because it doesn't compromise because someone says its silly and will scare off costumers, but instead is being embraced and worked on until it becomes Believeable. Instead of making Gandalfs costume silly and looking like a kids halloween costume for Merlin, etc. The Lord of the Rings took it seriously enough to treat everything as if it existed in the real world, and that is why One Piece works. No messing with the script without good competent reasoning, and no half done job, the commitment to say we are gonna do this, and we are gonna make it the best version we possibly can, and if it doesn't work, we redo it until it does, before we publish it. That is what it truly means to respect the source material, and yes I REALLY REALLY WISH that people at taken notes from Peter Jackson in 2001, but then Amazon Came along with their shit last year... and that's the exact example of someone who is in it for the money, not for the art, or care of an adaptation, and do fucked up shit to the IP that just fucks with the integrity and belivability of the world in favour of activism such as "Woke". And if the material is good then it doesnt need to be woke, I am so happy that all the characters for once piece got race appropriate castings and they found characters that ACTUALLY look like them in the show. Despite Usopp being slightly "rascist" drawn, they didn't try to make him look like the show they just cast someone who looked like him naturally without the charicaturing, the one thing i think doesn't work is the overthetop geekyness amongst some flashback interactions, but it's not ruining anything, and it feels a bit "acted", and the illusion breaks that it could be real, but thats maybe 3-8 scenes in all the episodes. I think the brilliance here is the fact that even manga panelling is used at times with close ups, and thats really cool, and I hope they do more of that, that works really well. Although i hope they don't overuse it and make it cliché either. Normally Manga charaters look weird in Live Action, but they have really done their homework, and i think the Costume department and the special effects department are reaching out for an emmy here... this is really well made, and not something that is easy, in fact this is the ONLY life action Anime I have ever seen that includes fan movies such as the dragonball shorts that came out of an indie studio and released as teasers on TH-cam, It was visually okay, but it still clearly showed that they were Indie and on a budget... give the same kind of people a budget, and you got something like One Piece, and you give someone who doesn't understand any of this rights to a movie and money and you get DragonBall the movie ... not the fanmade one...

      I dunno, a lot of the stuff that was cut seemed that it would have been cg heavy, and would have been really expensive. Such as richie, hachi and momo. If they get a bigger budget for season 2 they can add all those thing back in; hachi and momo being away but chasing them down for half an episode cause of what they did. And richie can show up again with buggy; and they need a bigger cg team and to spend more money on cg anyway for next season with what happens onward in the show.

The music was freaking excellent and did a terrific job at capturing the spirit of adventure, which is key to One Piece's story. Some purists are going to be upset at how much they changed and left out, but for me it was enjoyable to see the things they expanded on like all the added Coby stuff and giving Kaya much more screentime. Sanji, ussop, nami and luffy suffered alot from this(mainly because they had to cram so much info in 8 hours of runtime) thier character aren't really as fleshed out as in the anime. Lets take for exampla sanji. Due to don crieg not showing up at baratie luffy shining moment at baratie didn't exist, the reason why sanji even joined the crew is because of how determined both zoro and luffy were to achieve thier dreams (sanji wasn't even watching zoro vs mihawk in the LA) him joining the crew in the live action lacks impact or motive. I enjoyed the earnest campyness of the show and the even more earnest wholesome vibe. It gets dark as hell but it never lets that feel like the point. Luffy is just a golden hearted character that believes in the best in the world around him and the show unabashedly puts that on display without feeling a need to cynically tear it down, and his relentlessly good nature has a natural effect on bringing out the best in everyone around him. I feel like a lot of modern media is almost scared to be that sincere in its optimism, like people will refuse to take a story seriously if we don’t make it cynical and cruel.
    Combine that with the shows inherent sense of fun and its just enjoyable to watch. By the end I was excited to see this found families next adventures.

    I have to commend Netflix for what they were able to achieve here. To attempt to remake of a much-beloved anime/manga using a bunch of unknowns (as you pointed out) was a huge gamble. What also shouldn’t be ignored is the writing. They took 48-episodes of the anime series and condensed it into 8 while not losing the heart of the original was quite a feat. The casting, as you said, was great. That’s been the problem with some of the live-action remakes.

    I've been so let down by franchises and worlds that I've loved as I've grown up (Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Star Trek) that I was craving something new to sink my teeth into. To really get invested in. When I saw this was coming out and that fans were very hopeful with the casting and what they've seen I started reading the manga, and reading, and reading and I'm hooked. I'm only 176 chapters in (well beyond season 1 of the live action) and while there's liberties taken, as an adaptation it works very well. I'm relatively new to anime and manga too (I've bounced off One Piece in the past) but now that I accept what it is, and I go along for the ride I find that it's very enjoyable and fun and that's what I need after being so disappointed in things I've loved since the 80's. #KeepOnePieceWeird

      I don’t think he was scared or nervous in that scene. Nothing about his tone of voice or body language gave me that impression. I too find the line itself weird , but never in the fight is he shown to be unsure through his actions. I think he just realized that the best way to beat Arlong was to collapse the building around him, thus simultaneously defeating the evil and destroying the symbol of Nami’s captivity.

I think with the devil fruit powers this works better as an anime, BUT the actors are really good and I see why these characters are beloved and think for the first season at least being about how these five become a crew, I think it nails in that regard thanks to whats impressive they can do in live action and getting people, like me, who feel like 1,000 episodes it alot to catch up on, so finding a new audience this way works

    I think the reason sanji felt like his story in Barstie was lacking a little was because of what they had to cut out of the arc to make it fit the 8 ish hour runtime. It was the weakest part because it takes away a lot of sanji’s motivation for joining the crew. As the show makes it seem like luffy just asked him and he was like sure let’s go.

    God this is surreal. I've been reading One Piece weekly since 2004 and spend far too much time watching One Piece TH-cam content, so I'm definitely more on the "know every single thing that was going to happen" side of things. Dan, seeing you react to the story of OP from a totally clean slate is just so weird and cool and funny and impossible to describe. Honestly, surreal is the only word that will suffice.
    Anyway, as for the content of the show and your thoughts: I have many nitpicks about the adaptation, but this review is the most important I've heard so far. I really believe now that the show has succeeded in being accessible to normies. I can't see a world where this actually adapts the full story because it would either need to go on for too long and be prohibitively expensive, or they would start taking too many shortcuts and I think viewers would start to lose their investment. But I'm on board for as much as they can adapt with this level of care for the material, so bring on more seasons!
    Couple last thoughts: it's so weirdly satisfying to hear you get hyped over Nami and Sanji's flashbacks and emotional payoffs because they are hands down my favorite parts of the East Blue saga. And Usopp. Poor poor Usopp . . . Without spoiling anything, I can say with confidence that your feelings on Usopp up to this point in the story mirror a HUGE amount of the fandom of the anime and manga. There is a bit more development for him in the battle with the fishmen in the manga, but it's a pretty well-known fact that most long-time fans took quite a bit more of the story to appreciate Usopp fully. I certainly did.
    Anyway, thank you from the bottom of my heart for this review, Dan. It's dumb that it means so much to me, but it really does. Final word of advice: do not watch the anime. For the amount of insanely good moments it brings, it gets horribly diluted with too much mid to pretty bad content that has kept it running for so damn long.

    Dan, as a total One Piece beginner, I found this video quite useful. I woke up Sunday knowing 0.00% about One Piece, tried the first five minutes and was quite unsure. Call Me Chato is a very grumpy reviewer, but he gave it a green light, so I watched episode 1. Noticed your review just now, watched it, and I feel it is a great introduction to the show and a bit of the characters for people like me with low knowledge of the universe who would like a shorter introduction. Thanks! It's worth mentioning that there are plot and character details sprinkled in the show that set up or pay off bigger things, so it does warrant a bit more attention than many current shows .. but so far I am finding it well worth it.

  • @JMotion
    @JMotion ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think the biggest strength with this adaptation is the way they've gone about pacing and structure.
    In under 10 episodes, they've effectively adapted 50 episodes of the anime, which would've aired over the course of an entire year as a weekly anime series.
    At that pace, adapting the entire franchise would still be long as hell, sure. But I think now more than ever, in this era of Hollywood constantly refusing to let franchises die, a TV series with enough source material to last 10+ years is exactly the kind of thing Netflix should be happy to play the long game with, assuming it retains viewership.
    They've got something good going with this, and I really hope they're able to produce a 2nd season that works just as strongly as this one.

    • @SuzakuX
      @SuzakuX ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly I think the biggest issue with the One Piece anime is how much it drags everything out to avoid catching up to the source material. The manga is long but has for the most part a pretty brisk pace. I've never been able to get into the anime because the pacing is just awful. Even the latest batch of episodes I tried to download just to appreciate the sakuga animation only to find them literally replaying the same minute long scene three times in an episode just to pad out the runtime.
      I would much rather watch the slightly abridged live action adaptation, which despite being abridged also adds some new material that makes the story as a whole more cohesive and I feel are probably changes Oda would have included if he knew where he'd take the story that far in advance.

    Most long time OP fans have been discussing every aspect, every chapter/episode, of OP for around 25 years now, we have experienced almost all kinds of reactions possible from various people who came aboard and joined us on this journey to find the One Piece, so from my experience, I can say on behalf of most OP fans, that opinion of a new fan watching One Piece for the first time always interests us more than someone like ourselves who already know about it.
    Also, I don't think any OP fan will intentionally spoil you on any future event but beware about videos/shorts/thumbnails/posts/tweets/articles/posters because *many* official OP related sites/platforms as well as OP fans/youtubers casually create and share One Piece related content on TH-cam and other social media platforms without much care about spoiling new fans since its really difficult for them to promote their content about a such a long series without specifying what it is about in the title or thumbnail. I don't like this situation but that's how it is.

    Started One PIece anything/everything in 2019. Many marathon binges since followed by many months of nothing. I loved how there was always more to watch during this time period. I caught up to the anime’s current airings a few months ago and am caught up to the manga’s current releases as of 2 months ago. I’ll say this: You had the exact same reaction to the Nami and Sanji backstory as me which is the exact point where the source material clicked with me and the motivation to get through 1000+ episodes/manga began. Additionally, you are in for a treat. And yes, the story will only get weirder - it is imperative that the show maintains its faith in the source material for this to succeed. Comparisons to GoT/ASOIAF is apt here, as you observed - especially with the legion of characters and geography, as well as other aspects I will not spoil. I am not sure how the show will juggle casts and characters in the future aside from ignoring/merging ala GoT. Even with some pruning, there still leaves so many characters that must remain. Lastly, have patience with your current least favorite character. It will be difficult.

    I didn't know that you plan to watch it. I am a long time fans and I am so curious about new viewer about this adaptation. I love it as a fans because it hits the emotional beats. I think your opinion is so valid because this adaptation really good at giving the plot into something digestible for new viewer. I teared up in many scene because of the nostalgia but also because it's explain a lot of things clearly for the new viewer, it gives me this satisfaction that it feels seamless. Thanks for the review Dan and I am so glad you love it.
    Also most of the cast has the same feels from the original, especially luffy feels like real luffy from manga and anime, it just felt real.

    I am only on episode 3 but I really liked how very few people actually died. The heroes are actually heroic and love each other and fight the bad guys to win but they pull back a lot of times too, like at the fight with the ironjawed marine guy, could have chopped off his head but showed mercy. True its only mercy on the characters with plot armor but still.
    I loved how many emotional beats we got in just two episodes too. The backstory of Luffy is very cool and I liked how his dad let bad guys kinda run him over because he is trying to keep peace in his bar but once the bad guys went after his friends he had to kick ass. Again a moment that in another directors hands or studio is just an excuse to show randos being gutted and blood spray everywhere "becauses its ANIMMEEEEE" but goes to showing morality and what it can be to people.
    The difference is clear to this or something like Ahsoka, the emotions and characters are allowed to grow and be bolder than Ahsoka hides Ezra and Thrawn and we don't get to see them have growth.

      You’re spot on. I think the live action One Piece is kind of the show we need right now. With all the current (mostly Disney) shows with ‘perfect’ characters that get no room to grow, a show like this is a breath of fresh air. They are at the beginning of their journey and have all the potential in the world to grow. Also, there is no cynicism or forced upon lesson in morality, the characters are just who they are, flawed but hopeful. Just one little thing, Shanks is not Luffy’s ‘dad’ but a pirate that Luffy admires. His dad will hopefully get introduced in season 2 if there is one 😉

As a devoted One Piece fan, I noticed some additional scenes and subtle variations that weren't present in the anime or manga, which made the experience even more remarkable. I'm definitely proud to see that it's receiving such fantastic reviews.

    8:20 Usopp was the strawhat who IMO suffered the most from the time restriction. Many of his defining moments had to be removed. In the original story Usopp learns Captain Kuro is about to attack with his whole pirate crew, which leads to
    Usopp's 1st defining scene:
    After nobody believes his warnings he starts breaking down in tears, grieving over not himself, but the village which will be destroyed. Despite his fear and despite knowing how weak he is he decides to make sure his warnings remain lies, by defeating Kuro and his pirates alone. The strawhats of course decide to help him.
    Another removed scene:
    When he is being hunted by Chew the fishman at Arlong Park, Usopp pretends to be dead using tomato sauce like in the live action. This decision makes way more sense in the original version where Usopp just wanted to get rid of Chew so he can safely walk back to his friends. On the way he is happily thinking to himself what lies he can just tell them so he doesn't seem like a coward and so he can excuse himself from helping to fight. He catches himself and has a moment of reflection where he realises he is nothing like the brave warrior he wishes to be and decides to chase back after the fishman with no idea how he could defeat him. He comes up with the idea to ignite Chew's alcohol on the spot, but it isn't enough to knock him out. Usopp then resorts to the most elegant means of combat known to man: while he is down, he repeatedly beats Chew over the head with a hamer.

    Dan, please don’t let people tell you your opinions don’t matter, we’re here for your opinions no matter what. I’m a long time One Piece fan and I view the live action as an opportunity to introduce the series to newcomers. It’s very intimidating to start a manga or anime with 1,000+ episodes and chapters, so I think YOU are the primary target audience. They went above and beyond IMO by making interesting changes so anime-watchers and manga-readers can also relive this story for the first time. They also have a lot of references and tiny details that only we will understand the importance of. For that reason, bias and love for the series obviously included, I give this season a resounding 10/10. I didn’t think a live action one piece, or even anime in general, could be done with such love. The people behind and in front of the camera have clearly done their research or understand what this series is about from their own fanship.

    Actually, Mackenyu (Zoro) is hardly a non-household name… in Japan, where he is quite well known. Anyway, like yourself, I know very little of One Piece (tried to start the manga a couple years ago but gave up 2 issues in and never watched the anime) but I thought the series, like many Japanese anime and manga, has a lot of heart and as such I think it was a dang good anime adaptation.

    I’ve loved your video but I also just love your Portland shout out thank you. You got me laughing quite hard.
    Thank you for taking the time to do a review. I have been in love watching people fall in love with One Piece. I was one person who used to not want to get into One Piece because I did not like the art but back in 2013, my brother introduced me into it and I ended up watching all 600 episodes, that was current, within less than a month and a half. I am now a major One Piece fan and I think this live action is going to make it even alarger fandom.
    Also, I agree with you there are people who like to do spoilers I am a cosplayer and I do a lot of group photo shoots and one piece is one of the ones I do and at the beginning of each of my photo shoots do state “spoilers are going to be Present so if you’re not caught up, you have been been warned “ because there are some new cosplayers that are not totally caught up. I feel that is the only time you should publicly have spoilers but again welcome to the crew

For many fans, a lot of backstories fell behind their original (time constraint, structuring) or maybe some literary depth was lost here and there (reorginizing the plot) but ofc it would when ure constantly comparing. Because appearently they all worked? Not just for you, but for other first timers on youtube as well. Suprising, and a relief
