Me too! I cleaned the places. Also I tested a new vacuum. I went over the spaces with the old one and then tried my new Dyson. It picked up QUITE a bit more...
WOW... very informative!! I never thought that waxes were that vital for lotion bars, but thanks to you, now I know!!! It's imperative to follow the composition of the lotion bars to ensure the final product is of desired quality!!!
I discovered lotion bars at a craft fair. I bought 2. Love them, but live in a hot climate and they stick to the bottom of the tin, so they've become more of a salve after a few uses. So I researched butters to try my own hand at improving on the idea. I bought Kokum and beeswax and I have assorted carrier and assorted oils already. I bought tins and want to work on them this weekend. This was a useful video and I really appreciate you using "parts" it is easier to follow. I wish I had someone experienced looking over my shoulder who could say, "oh no Honey, that's not going to work.". But I feel more confident watching this.
Me too! I snickered. Then was sad... cause it's my birthday weekend but my partner is unavailable this weekend. We're celebrating NEXT weekend so plans... but yeah. *sigh*
I do not like the waxy feel of wax. I am using a recipe simpler than yours (equal parts wax, cocoa butter, and liquid oil), but decided to substitute the wax for cetearyl alcohol and it worked. It was a different texture but I liked it. I bet stearic acid like you mentioned would also work. :)
Totally! So cetearyl alcohol is the main ingredient of an emulsifying wax, and while it’s overkill in a recipe for a lotion bar which requires no assistance staying in solution, it will act as a (more expensive) hardening agent for the bar. Stearic would be a viable option as well, though I fear it would feel more waxy than a soy or beeswax.
Solid lotion bar: 6 parts medium butter, 4 parts wax, 2 parts hard butter, 10 parts oils. Then add: arrowroot or other starch + fragrance. Is this corect? Did I miss something?
I need advice. I ordered a lotion bar from an eBay seller. It smells good. It shipped solid, no melting. So, I was pleased. However, it is so hard that it does not melt in hand. I held it and rubbed it for a while. No melting at all. I wondered if I could remelt this bar and add some coconut oil. It’s a round bar, maybe 2oz.
@@MrsSoapAndClay if it’s a two ounce round bar, about how much coconut oil should I add? I have never made lotion or soap before. This bar seems quite hard. Like a solid block of bees wax. Her listing didn’t say what’s in it.
Question: you mentioned that soy wax is too soft to stand among the other waxes in lotion bars, but can you use soy wax as a stand-in for the hard (cocoa) butter portion? Btw, thank you for these videos. I'm learning so much and I'm really enjoying the science behind it.
Yeah, soy has a lower melt point than bees and is softer, similar to the consistency of cocoa. So it works there, but another wax with a higher melt point is a good idea for structure.
Thank you! I was hoping that might be the case. I have plenty of soy wax, and everything else I need including shea butter, but no cocoa butter. I am dying to try this sooner rather than later lol. I appreciate you taking time out of your evening to answer my question.
Okay. But can I sub... out the cornstarch and put in a clay (other than that diatomaceous earth stuff)? Would kaolin or bentonite do something similar?
I’ve never tried it, but theoretically it could work. It would be a heavier powder though, and might end up feeling gummy on the skin. Melt down a single lotion bar and add some in at 1% of the total weight to see how you like it!
Good question! I like to kick off the fall season mid august with an early bird sale, so I can actually have the delicious fall scents for a while before Christmas comes steam rolling in.
Question: I'm looking for help in using Emu oil. I'd like to use it in soap, lotion, lotion bars.... And anything else it might do well in. I purchased a 5 gal bucket and I'm itching to try it. Any help with that oil??? Any suggestions..... Wanna try some????
What happens when you can’t use cocoa butter due to allergies? Does Kokum butter act the same? On paper they seem similar. I have never seen a lotion bar in person so I’m not sure what it’s supposed to feel like.
@@MrsSoapAndClay thank you! Yeah, when I first found one I tried just using the "sub this for this" things online without understanding all the properties, etc. My three attempts so far have all been too soft because I didn't have that hard butter. Can't wait to try it with the Kokum butter!
Melt all of your butters and heat them with the oils, and let them sit at 120 degrees ish for 20ish minutes. Gives the butters time to marry with the oils. Have fun!
I’m playing Animal Crossing while watching right now. It’s a great de-stressor! I’m curious for these, what would you suggest is the best way to store them? Like, I don’t want to just chuck it in my purse but I don’t know the best container to carry them around in.
Thank you for your video. I tried using a mix of olive oil and hemp seed and the bar got very sticky. I used arrowroot too. I don’t know what went wrong. Was the choice of the oils a mistake?
Personally I wouldn’t use olive oil in a lotion bar because it’s a rather slimy oil, but if that’s what you have, try pairing it with a dry oil like jojoba or the like to cut down the stickiness. Have fun!
Ooh good question. This emulsifier is an oil in water, yeah? There IS no water in a lotion bar, but because the waxes aren’t really for emulsion in this case, it should work! Try a small batch and let us know how it goes!
I remembered to do the thing!!!!

Again, this is why I love this channel. You explain all the details and the why and why not. Very informative. Thank you, you rock.
I just discovered this channel a couple of weeks ago...I'm going all in, watching all videos 😂 I agree, she's brilliant, Mrs. soap & Clay!!

Thanks great info! I am new to lotion bar making , this was very helpful!
I appreciate the knowledge you are giving us on lotion bars!! I am new to making them! ? Thanks so much.
Thanks for another great video. I appreciate how you explain things instead of doing things. And also showing what happens in different scenarios.
I really love your channel. I learn so much from you. Thank you
I enjoy your personality and your videos so much. I hope you feel better. 💕
Great lesson. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge. I hope that by now you are totally recovered :-P Hugs from Spain.

I have used carnauba wax. it works but it melts in sun. but does good in chapstick or lipstick.

Hey! I think I got them from a hobby store, but that was like a decade ago. I’m sure Amazon has something similar - these hold 4oz.

Thank you. You just explained why I was having so much trouble with mine. I was using soy wax instead of beeswax
Hi! I bought the Kate McLeod body stone and she claims there’s no wax ( apparently she was a chef and temper her cocoa butter), is it possible?
Have you tried working with castor wax? I'm finding that it's a great substitute for beeswax.
When will you have your solid lotion bars back in your shop? I am just dying to try them
Okay. But can I sub... out the cornstarch and put in a clay (other than that diatomaceous earth stuff)? Would kaolin or bentonite do something similar?
Yup all lightweight clay!
@@MrsSoapAndClay Neat!
Is the ratio of One tablespoon per pound of Oil - Butter for arrowroot, the same here as for Clay? Or is there a different ratio rates for Clay?
Has anyone ever tried this with cetyl or cetearul alcohol?
Can you tell me when you will be putting your solid lotion bars back in your shop
You said arrowroot was necessary to avoid greasy feel on the skin. Can I substitute colloidal oatmeal for the same effect?

How much arrowroot powder is appropriate per batch?
I dunno! Depends on the batch size. I usually put a tablespoon per pound of oils/butters.
