My 2nd ever "negative video" The YouTube Burnout Trend LONG

  • LONG... but watch it all or not at all.
Recently, more than a dozen channels I subscribe to have shut down, announced a sabbatical, or discussed how they are heavily considering it. Why are so many wonderful YT model train channels suddenly feeling down and out? Is it just "gatekeepers" and "rivet counters," or is there more to it?
While TH-cam has its ups and downs, I have never seen so many channels expressing their frustrations with the negative folks who come on their videos.
In this video I discuss some of the underlying traps as I see them, my own bouts of manic depression and what sets it off, and discuss the various types of negative folks who are most likely to get under one's skin and lead to the walk-offs.

Hi Anthony, I just want to say thank you for taking the time out to share the joy of your hobby with us, you and others like you are an inspiration to so many modellers right around the world, quite what people get out of making negative comments is beyond me, and why anyone would dislike a video of a small child enjoying their first train-ride, or your friend's video, showing him learning to walk again?,as you say, these are amazing, beautiful moments in people's lives , and we are privileged to be able to see them, take care, all the best from, Stephen.

Thank you for the kind words. Although I discuss my experiences, this video is about those going through the burnout, and offering understanding and sympathy. It is quite a few recently in the community - more than I have seen before.

Thanks for this Anthony, this is something that needs saying. Social media seems to make some people think that their words don’t have consequences. I’m a semi-regular watcher. I’m an N scaler, don’t know much about HO but just watching your trains run, and sharing your enjoyment is an inspiration and has allowed me to realise that I can run whatever I want and just enjoy it for its own sake. I’ve had some negative feedback on my tiny train channel and was surprised by how badly it made me feel because I just kinda enjoyed doing it. Anyhow.. keep doing what you are doing for you. You said something that sums it up perfectly (paraphrase) ‘just because you can do a thing, doesn’t mean you should do a thing’. I just love trains, I love watching your trains and listening to you share your joy so just simply thanks for sharing your insight and passion

Thank you for your very kind words and support. I am just sorry for these channels that are feeling burned out, knowing how much flack they must take, especially when they are not professional "how-to" channels. They are just folks who like to run trains and build their layouts and share them. They have grown big in subscriptions, but their attitude is still just the share and have fun. Too many people think that these channels are fair game and should just accept anything as they are big channels, and it comes with the territory Some people are just gentle souls and do not understand why they draw such vile. I sympathize because I am drawn to sympathy and know how even simple things can get big. I have not burned out, nor tired of TH-cam. TH-cam has done far more good than bad for me, but there are comments and actions which do sting and get to me, so these channels must really have had some nasty stuff to feel as they do.

Hello Anthony. Can i just say you have a wonderfully clear and well spoken way of talking and communicating through your videos. I genuinely enjoy listening to you on TH-cam through your live streams and videos like this.
It's been really interesting hearing about your manic depression, and again you describe the effects of it so very well. Without going into too much detail I can 10000% relate to this, and it can be hard to open up about these things especially when it can be easily hidden behind a 'Happy and Jolly' persona.
TH-cam is a funny old thing, and it can easily become a bit of self created monster. On the one hand it gives is the opportunity to meet so many wonderful, wonderful people and share things with each other such as hobbies and interests. And yet it has its darker side of potentially exposing us to the negative and self righteous folk of the world, who just want to rain on your parade. It can be hard to rise above that and carry on sometimes, but I feel that it's important to simply turn the other cheek and crack on with what we love to do and be amongst the people we love to be with.
Please stay strong and keep up the amazing work you do on your channel Anthony, All the very best to yourself, Joyce and your family.

Hello, Martin and thank you for the kind words. I think manics tend to be shy, but positive. We just live with the idea that we never know when the next trough will occur. The channels that I see burning out from the negatives all turn the other cheek, but one does run out of cheeks eventually. Despite my own issues and negative feedback at times, I have not felt close to walking away... yet. The straws do come, however, so it makes me and others keenly aware and sympathetic when some finally has had enough. To be honest, I find being up front with my issues (depression, autism, ADD) helps me. I also find that an occasional return volley at a negative attack does me good. 99% I ignore, but the 1% will quickly regret pushing me. I won't change them, but I sometimes feel the need to stand my ground at times.

Hello! I started uploading videos to TH-cam to show my dad (who lived in the UK) what I was doing with the layout (here in Ohio) because he didn't get to visit very often. Then I started adding videos to show people how to fix things, like ringfield motors because it was easier to do one video and show people than write out a long explanation that sometimes was hard to follow. After a couple of videos, I just kept filming model railway stuff that I did and uploaded it, because if it helped just one person, then it was worth the effort. The negative human behavior you describe in the video isn't unique to TH-cam, its been around since computers have been networked in the 90s. The negative intent isn't always there, sometimes its people misinterpreting things or having the wrong expectations when they watch a video. Sometimes its people frustrated because they can't figure something out, maybe your video was the 50th video they've watched on the topic, the most promising and maybe your hand was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes people look at the thumbnail, a few seconds of the video and make a comment not realizing had they watched the entire video, their comment would be redundant. More often than not, people are just bad at communicating and bad at typing, so they combine these skills to leave a somewhat rude sounding comment. Sometimes defusing the situation with your reply will fix the misunderstanding. Other times though, the negative intent is there, usually they perceive your video or channel as a threat to something they are doing, or something a friend or family member is doing. Sometimes they're a corporation who would prefer you hadn't pointed out that they didn't really test their products. Others have a deep misunderstanding of the TH-cam algorithm, and think if they dislike your video before there are likes, that it'll get less views or something. You are absolutely correct, when you upload stuff to TH-cam, you owe nothing, you're going out of your way to hopefully help someone out or give them a few minutes of joy watching trains go around. Don't compare your views, likes, comments and subscribers to other channels, those analytics aren't important. Whats important is that your video helped someone out in some way or another. Like this video, might just sway someone from not packing it in. Think we all need to just keep posting videos of trains...

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

All you said, most know and agree. We tend to be quite genial. Sadly, such negative behavior goes back even before computers, but social media has added a new element of anonymity and animosity, along with a greater sense of entitlement by viewers. This entitlement is exponentially deeper in the mind of the viewer than a sports team fan who expects players, coaches and ownership heed their letters and shouts. At least that fan may have the poor excuse of having bought season tickets or reserved seats. The viewers on YT paid nothing to watch a video, most likely not aimed at them.
You mentioned how your goals changed. You wanted to show sad; then show/teach. That intent immediately draws some negative responses from those who think they know better and those who expect your product and production values to match your perceived ambitions. Thus, when I did public readings from my book or published articles, I expected a level of negative feedback and intended "constructive criticism." Obviously, long years on the internet tell us we will have trolls and such. That does not help or prepare folks who see YT merely as a fancier FB and truly are just making videos for a small, friendly audience who get the extreme critics and demanding, entitled viewers. It would be like Gordon Ramsey showing up at your backyard family grill and going off on how the way you grill hot dogs/sausages is so embarrassing and would never suit the royal family.
Sometimes, these channels grow very big, but the presenters try to do as they always have. Unfortunately, many viewers either expect a 20K sub channel to be professional and answer every whim, or they think a channel like that is fair game to hate on, because the presenter should expect a few negative comments. There may be envy, a sense of superiority, or who knows what else.
I am not the sufferer. I am the sympathetic viewer watching innocent channels shut down because too many have this need. We are powerless to do anything, but telling folks "just ignore it" after they've been upset is a wrong way to support. Everyone has a breaking point. I just remember, as I did with colleagues and students, that I do not know what the person before me is going through off camera, so I refrain from anything remotely critical or subversive. Thank you for your view and story. Much appreciated! 👍

Hello, Anthony... although 75% of this video was about my depression and experiences, I have never suffered from the burnout. I have felt agitated. I just hurt for these great channels that have wonderful hosts who get the stupidest and even nastiest complaints for no reason. It is not like they are selling anything or even trying to prove how great they are. They merely show a love for the hobby and a joy in what they are working on, and some folks can not let that be. I can suffer more abuse myself than I can suffer seeing others taking.

Anger on the behalf of others is one of the greatest sources of "bravery." It accomplishes little... people won't change, but maybe letting folks know you understand when they have a down moment or are thinking of quitting TH-cam from the toxicity of some people... maybe that gives them a little comfort.

I do follow model railroad on youtube generally, but hadn't seen your channel before, though generally O-Gauge, as that's my father's layout's gauge. The 'negative' video is the first thing the algorithm picked to show me. I've seen this with channels.

Despite talking about my experiences, I have never felt burned out, but my situation makes me feel a vicarious pain for these channels that I, and hundreds and thousands of other, love, but are tired of the unexpected and unwarranted complaints and criticism. They are just here to share good fun and some folks just feel the need to pull down.

I have not thought about this from the viewers point of view. first off then, I will say I am sorry. I did take a break from you tube, from live streaming, from posting content, not for the reason of negative comments , but yet the demand put on myself to post more, to post new products, to post live streams to give a place to hang out. I am more a critic of myself, and NEED it to mean something, to help someone, to give a place to learn and grow. To myself I was failing at this, so wait, ok, negative comments,, well I took the break before I started getting those, yes I am scared to fail, scared people will look down on me,, SCARRED to be washed up. so the more I listen to this, the more I understand, it happens to us all, in one way or another, I am still not out of the woods yet. I still want to fulfill what I have my channel for, some days I have it, other days I think, wait what if people don't see this idea in the same sense I do. again,, afraid to fail. so if I don't post, I can't get negative feed back. So back to what you touched on,, the Viewers. the people that don't know what I feel, what I am afraid of, and all they see is he quit. why did he quit, did he give up on this community. see, now I thinking the extreme other side of the coin, without rambling I should stop, I am sure this is confusing enough now, comes down to post or not to post. to care what others think /to what I think. maybe I just have to stop thinking of the WHAT IF'S and just do it .

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hello, David! I do not see a reason to apologize. I just saw a bunch of channels talking about the jump in negative comments recently and leaving YT or going on hiatus... and the troll comments are the least offensive and easiest to dismiss. I rambled too much, and folks saw me discuss my mental health story and think I am burned out, which I am not. This is bigger channels, bigger than mine and even yours, and they are not "how-to/professional guys," just people who love the hobby and grew big. Some burnout can occur because of the pressures a creator puts on themselves to produce quality and pertinent videos and maintain audience expectations (along with views and interactions).
The burnouts I am discussing are from the ma/pa channels who grew because of their easy-going, fun style but the rivet-counters, the gatekeepers, and the entitled viewer just keep coming at them. The "Helpful Harrys," the "Know-it-all-Noels," and this breed of entitled viewers ("I watched your video, and I have a few demands to make for me to view more of your channel."). No matter how tough or strong someone is, they have a breaking point. Sometimes, because these folks aren't using a business model on their channel, they are not prepared for the customer-mentality of a lot of viewers. Not to mention how it affects their mental health, which has nothing to do with YT specifically. We always tell folks "just ignore it/don't worry about it." Problem is, they can't and do. We can not change anything... we can't stop the trolls, we can not stop the customer-mentality viewers, but we can just understand the reason why it gets to people, whether they are manic depressives like me or simple folks who are caught up in something bigger than they expected, can not handle all the incoming noise, and just want to get away from it. So, they leave TH-cam or go on a hiatus. Problem is, those viewers I mention... not the trolls and random jerks... they plant a poison in the brains of these folks. Even when they leave TH-cam, they look at their trains or layout and think about the criticisms, complaints, excessive suggestions, etc.
This is why I talked about the seduction of TH-cam. It gets the ma and pas coming in and then many get overwhelmed as their channels grow beyond belief and folks think these bigger channels are pros, and feel entitled to opine on everything.
Anyhow, I was just expressing sympathy and sadness. I can not change anything, but I put out the word knowing a few of these channels do tune into me. I let them know I understand and to not feel guilty. And to selfishly ask them to leave their videos up if they do leave. I did offer advice to those who think about it, which is "never tell someone who is bothered by something, 'don't let it bother you." It just makes them feel worse. Just about everyone knows to ignore the trolls and negative comments, but some can get to you, and sometimes you do have to walk away or clap back. I myself have clapped back at times, because it may feed a troll, but the troll does not stand a chance against me... and a good battle of wits with some of these bozos does me good now and then. Anyone, you are a hell of a guy and I appreciate and respect your point of view, and all the great things you've done. I am also glad you have not had the last straw.
      Cheers!

I do not worry about whether a channel is monetized or not, the commercials get stuck on your videos no matter what. There just seems to be a surge in the entitled/bitchy viewer who feels they have the inalienable right to criticize or make ridiculous demand on some channels because "you posted this, I watched it, so I have a right to say whatever I want." Some people just want to be mean, but you can usually distinguish those posts and ignore them. It's the petty or entitled ones that bug you. Yes, the thumbs down on some videos can get you. You think "what was wrong with that?" Why give a thumbs down to a guy learning to walk or a 2-year-old saying they like trains. Those are the ones that set me off. It shows the ugliest side of humanity in a simple act, and I like humanity.

Well it took me 3 visits to see this all the way through as you asked but what your saying is well worth saying and I hope this is seen by many others. I have been lucky both as a small channel and the name of my channel I do not get much of what you decribe so I am thankful for that. I do wonder if the people who do this are the same as the ones who throw there rubbish down and expect others to pick up the bill of millons of pounds/dollers or leave there doggy poo so that we can step in it!! but yes YT are in it for the money and we are I think gratefull that we can send our content around the world for free it is a service and its great that the advertisers are happy to pay for it. I hope that the channels who are thinking of leaving heed your comments because at some stage they will get the urge again and if you have to start all over again from scratch some may not bother and miss out on the friendship and entertainment that is there for us. A great mind provoking video indeed so well done for making it and all the attempts before. Now back to the trains super.
    Cheers Robert.

I am glad you have avoided the negativity. Usually, we can all just ignore it, but it can get overwhelming, especially when undeserved. In other words, if I put up a song and my awful voice is there... I expect and deserve some negatives, but too much is just bitter people who feel like they have a right to tee off on your channel because you didn't do what they wanted... or they attack something which should be free of attack. There's plenty of understandable reasons why some decides to leave the hobby or stop posting on TH-cam... don't need to be pushed out the door by petty knuckleheads.

I joined as a Personal Journey with Model railways and the Real Railways and Share with Good folks ( Like yourself and Thank you for that Friendship and Support over the Years ) and Mostly have Fun . I'll never do it for the money as it is not relevant to me at all after all thats not what i have any interest in as it does even bother me . As for the burn out side . I also have that Trying to come up with Ideas is getting harder and harder to try and keep it fresh and keep Folks Happy is getting even harder . That one reason why i tend to do more videos on the real stuff as i dont have to much editing . ( its all raw footage !!! ) Then there is also outside factors in life . I recentlty Lost a Family Member due Suicide so that has also made me lose my Mojo . And one of the recent comment on a Video which got all political ( I personally think there is no place for This on a Model Railway Channel ) Any My rant Over !!! ( Sorry Anthony !!! ) But yes i do agree with you Sir
And Keep your Chin Up Bud And Keep up the hard work your channel is a Major Highlight to my Viewing Pleasure on this Platform .

I am weird, Andrew... I don't get bored with stuff if I like it. I don't think things have to be changed and kept fresh... I love the joy and the beauty of the models and the layout or carpet... it is the fun the person has. You have been through a lot, but these people that feel the need to dump over a channel and bring in issues that the channel is not there for has become rampant lately. I talked about my issues more only to convince the folks I am defending that I understand what they feel. Some tell them "you can't leave" and to "just ignore it." Both are not fair when someone is feeling what they feel. It is said, and the people making the issues will never understand they are the problem, but we have to show support for the channels that do so much to make us happy. I know Allan told me it's hard for him to come up with new and different... and I am just saying, "I don't need new and different... I just need to se your layout and your trains... and most of all... just see you happy." When you worry about the viewers and numbers (when money and income is not the goal), I think you do lose sight of why you came on to YT in the first place. In the end, TH-cam is just the vehicle... where it goes is on us.

I’ve not seen any of my channels shutdown except for Barry Davis which is understandable on so many levels. You are the most honest and upfront person I see discussing this. Hello and thank you for the comments. I try to be very positive, and as I said int he videos, some channels invite some negativity, or at least, it comes with the product they produce. Most TH-camrs do not see themselves as promotional content creators, even when their channels grow into the tens of thousands of subscribers and do not warrant the attacks or criticisms. I talked about my experiences as a reference point, but I have never considered leaving TH-cam or burned out, but have been pushed at times. Absolutely with you 100%. I have only been on TH-cam as a vlogger for a short while, not up to 300 sub's yet, so not had the negative comments you bigger channels have had.
However I take things to heart, luckily I have people whom I'm close to like Graham and Deano that have pulled me out of my depression.
Spoken to Lord Al and met him, his video's always make me feel good, how can anyone give him a hard time. As do you with your happy fun personality.
I always like to see the good in people, that's my fault because some of the scum know this and use it against you. But I will always stay positive with people until I know better.
I never ever give a negative comment on TH-cam, if I don't agree with something I just don't comment, no reason on this earth to make people feel bad. Enough bad things going on

I like humans, I like humanity. I bask in the happiness of those who just spread good vibes, like Al or Graham. It pains me when such folks get the petty people who feel the need to spit at them. Some see it as these channels being oversensitive, but that is why I used the "straw" analogy. Based on the stuff I got (and I was getting some guff even at 225 subs because of my "Ghost of 2015" bits in my original show), but I can not imagine what it must be like to get some of what they get.

Hi Anthony and what a great video that was and your thinking is exactly the same as mine - now that I have had a long talk with myself and tried to understand the reasoning behind these comments which of course is many fold. But you will never stop them so you have to just alter the way you respond. Before I would take them to heart and rant back at them, I don’t do that anymore as I feel that adds fuel to fire and in a way, it gives them the satisfaction that some crave for, and I won’t give them that satisfaction anymore. So all I do is delete the comment and block them or my favourite these days is to pin their comment to the top so that everyone who sees the video and starts reading the comments can clearly see what utter arseholes they really are.
So for me, it’s no longer a problem as I have learnt how to deal with them to suit my needs. I still of course get angry with them at times but I don’t respond to them with a reply and to be honest, I think that winds them up even more which for me is great as it shows that they are totally unimportant to me.
Anyway, thank you for the video my friend, I found it very useful and kind of comments my way of thinking is the correct way - for me anyway. 👍🏻. Cheers. …………Graham

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hello, Graham and thanks for watching. There are such a multitude or reasons folks feel the need to be negative, you can not cover them. Some are bullies, and blocking and banning is an effective tool, although I occasional like a good verbal joust (because I am arrogant and expect to win against these Negative Nellies. I rarely do, only for the sake of other viewers and commentors. I tend to react more on behalf of the "Good Joes" who are not putting themselves out there or acting superior... folks who just share a bit of love of the hobby- and folks still feel the need to criticize. With so many channels I follow discussing it and actually talking about it or having actually left TH-cam, I guess I needed to vent. I was glad to hear from a couple of those channels who liked this video. Some negative stuff is expected and you just ignore it, but it can get under your skin... some of us more susceptible to it than others. Funnily enough, it bothers me more when it happens to others than to myself, especially as I figure I do invite some of it with posting songs and comics and not building a layout on a train channel, but others just share their love without criticizing or arrogance, and they still get hatemail, so to speak. That riles me up.

I don't understand people who leave negative comments or dislikes. If I don't like something I just don't leave a comment. I never say something on social media that I would not say to your face. That is just the way I am. But I understand people who get burned out putting up videos. It is very hard to put together videos. The amount of time must be incredible. I don't know how people do it. I have enough trouble finding time to work on my layout, I can't imagine trying to create videos. I know that when things become work and not fun it is harder to keep doing them. Especially when you are doing it for enjoyment and not financial gain. I hope the channels you are talking about take some time to get back to enjoying the hobby for them. Thanks for sharing.

I agree, and feel and act the same way, John. The problem is, in our "customer is always right" corporate societies, folks on TH-cam seem to think every posted video is a product they bought and thus have a right to complain to the manager. One watches a well-produced video and assume that sense of entitlement. "You clearly put this effort in to impress me, well I am not impressed, and I am going to let you know how crappy I feel at you." It's a shameful mentality we have developed the last few decades.
Truth is, I put very little work into my train videos and livestreams (except the videos where I try to synchronize trains together). The hardest I work is on the songs and Matt Clarke, which, oddly enough, get the most negatives. And the vast majority of those negatives do not bother me as I am putting it out as "art," so I have to expect blowback. As I said, what gets me are the negatives on things that there is absolutely no reason to be negative on. Not even opinion. A Guy with no legs learning to walk? Are you really going to give that a thumbs down or complain about the lighting or music in that situation? WTF! At worst, just ignore it and move on.

I realized that I enjoy the historical as well as engineering aspect of trains, not so much creating a perfect layout. I view this as a journey and try to enjoy every day of it I learn more about trains.

      Hi Mark,
The thing is, as I poorly clarify in the video is that some folks can't just ignore it, or so much comes in, it is impossible to not let it get to you. I used the examples of some of the BS I get to express sympathy for those who have discussed that they are leaving or taking a break because of the negativity. I have had no burnout, although some things do annoy me.
Some stress about counts (subscribers views then and now, etc.) or some get stressed by pressure of putting up content. Neither concern me. I put up what I want, when I want, knowing some of what I do (like my singing) naturally invite some less-than-friendly comments and letters.
Some folks hit a breaking point... ignore so much for so long, then they break... the "last straw" analogy. And the worst thing one can do for those who are openly annoyed or frustrated is deny what they are feeling or tell them "just ignore it" when they obviously couldn't anymore. At that point, all you can do is express sympathy or empathy if you like them and support whatever decisions they make.

The thing is, this rant is in defense of some very popular channels that have all talked about the sudden rise in negative comments. I used my experiences to express recognition and understanding of what they are going through. The funny thing is, the most obvious and rude comments do not get to one as much... it is the insidious bits and just the sudden upswing in people who demand that a channel gives them what they want and forget, who criticize or even "just want to help." Most of us are not television shows and professional actors, we came to hang. Too many viewers nowadays confuse TH-cam with Netflix and forget that most on here are just here to share some love and fun and not be the viewers personal entertainment channel. It is a gift to be able to choose so many channels and videos and find what we like, but some act like spoiled children who come to a video that did not appease them and they feel the need to be negative for all the BS reasons. I tend to just ignore or delete unwelcomed comments, but sometimes, it catches me on the wrong side. I will reply viciously, if needed, to let this person know they messed with the wrong person. I do not mind a little verbal slit fight, because I will win it. And, if does not good to the world, but makes me feel better to let it off. I just feel angrier when someone else finally gets too frustrated and needs to quit or wants to quit when they do not deserve to be made to feel that way. Hey, some channels can be obnoxious and invite comments and criticism, but most are just trying to share a love and hope folks appreciate it.
