  • Lew Frederick is a state senator, former KGW reporter, a past teacher and grew up playing with Martin Luther King Junior's kids. But he knows the only thing too many people see is the color of his skin. Here’s his story.

    I grew up with Lew in my life. For one day every week, he would meet up at 5 in the morning with a committee of students representing all the High Schools across Portland to get student feedback on ho we could better the education system in the city. Hear out what needs each school needed. We would tell him what we needed, as students inside the education system, and he would go to bat for us with the superintendent and school board.
    There is nobody I trust more to listen to the needs of the people they represent and fight for them. He will always be one of the greatest representations of the kind of person I aspire to be.

    As a retired black man, that grew up in the whitest suburbs of Northern Chicago,
    this all started making sense to me when I started approaching the history of this country,
    not as something that white supremacy is appalling, but that the rule of white supremacy was by design.
    We have to stop fooling ourselves that there is a 'good war' or things like 'love the world and let your fancy flow.'
    As a nation, we are asleep. There can be no racial reconciliation until we face the truth of this country's history.
    Or we will forever be saying "This isn't us!??"...
    When it is, actually us.

    As an Asian, I can empathize with what he is saying from both black and white perspectives. At times, the racism toward black and white people creeps in. At other times, I feel the racism toward me from without. It is almost as if a life- long addiction struggle. The triggers are always there and I will stumble and fall. However, I wow to be better each and every day, and make the world better than I how found myself in it.

      The strangest part of being Asian in the US is that change in reactions from region to region. I'm normally in NYC or the surrounding metro-tri state area. Here, I'm basically Jewish. What I mean is I'm basically white; maybe not the right kind of white for certain people, but white. However, if I go too far south, away from the ocean, or to super isolated places; somehow, I'm basically Hispanic. Now, I have nothing but love for my Hispanic brothers and sisters. But, even they have to admit, life is a lot easier when society at large treats you the same as a white Jewish person.

    Mr. Frederick said that he fears for his life when there is a police officer behind him. That statement says to me that he believes that every police officer might shoot him. I believe that the vast majority of law enforcement officers want to protect and defend and are not a threat to any of us. I have respect for the law and for the police which is why I cooperate with them.

    • @TheDealer6373
      @TheDealer6373 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's the problem, you 'believe' because you don't have any real experience. Lots of people do and it's not just one cop. It's a nightmare for us that can never wake up from it. It's like the movie groundhog day.

      So reach under the seat while the officer is approaching the vehicle?
      No. No matter what color your skin is, no matter what you're being pulled over for, no matter where you keep your papers: NEVER reach for ANYTHING until the officer has approached you and asked for it. Reaching for anything an officer can't see is a good way to cause panic and get shot. That is absolutely terrible advice.
