  • Liz Byrd became the first African American woman to serve in Wyoming's legislature. After four terms in the House, she went on to become the first African American woman elected to the Wyoming Senate, serving 2 terms.
Mrs. Byrd’s time in the state legislature was devoted to furthering the advancement of education and children’s issues. But her most notable achievement came with the passage of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, signed into law by Governor Mike Sullivan in 1991.
Harriet Elizabeth "Liz" Byrd passed away on January 27, 2015, at her home in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

I'm so happy PBS made this video of Liz Byrd. She was one of the most interesting and caring persons I ever met living here in Cheyenne.

I enjoyed this very much and would love to see more about black migration and settlement in Wyoming. Mrs. Byrd story was both courageous and inspirational. I particularly enjoyed over the relationship she had with her father, her love for teaching and her experience at West Virginia State! Thank you for sharing @WyomingPBS.

How ironic that the Equality State's only University would not allow Elizabeth Byrd to live on campus. Such an embarrassment--shame on us!
