Nice explanation with the excel sheet! I was looking for this exact video. I work as SDE-2 in Faang based in London and bachelor too :p. I wanted to compare my savings with that of India and US. After doing my calculation my savings work out to be 0.6x of seattle savings that you showed. 1 year ago when the GBP was stronger, my savings worked out to be 0.7x of seattle savings
The point of taking savings and coming back to India is super important. It only makes sense then financially. There are downsides though , for that period you lose Indian connections and when you leave USA after 4-5 years you loose connections you made in USA as well. Its financially a good choice but messes social life.

The cost estimates for eating out is very frugal for a city like Bangalore. I am sure your yearly expenses in India will be higher. There are a lot of non-fixed expenses like you would buy a phone once in 2 years, take a trip once a year, go shopping, some cosmetics, etc.
Yes but these expenses will be there either side and completely depends on how one chooses to spend it. That's why can't really make a generalization. Rest alcohol hasn't been taken into consideration. Cost of eating out is ok if you go out 5-6 times a month then it amounts to around 3K . Meaning around 500 bucks that is just for food. Truffles all American cheese burger plus a milkshake etc. Will cost you lesser than 500 bucks. Obviously this doesn't include when you go out in groups, the cost per person will reduce further. So i would say it is quite sufficient. Infact for me, the expenses present here, are quite a lot lesser. More around 20 K a month. Not even that. 😊
Numbers are great to bring clarity and grab interest of viewers, but I do still feel that the expenses have been cutdown to minimum possible, altering which would bring significant changes. Soumyajit had a query. So I am in a good reputed Tier 1 college and will be graduating this June. Currently interning a firm and got a PPO offer over there ( TC is above 25 Lakhs and work is full stack ( Node and react) ). What I am thinking is: I complete 1 year exp as FTE in the firm and leave for MS in US( Prolly thinking about joining San Jose State Uni as fees is less ( Edu will be done within 30 lakhs upper bound) and is in the heart of the valley). Primary aim will be to get a job as SDE and work for 3-4 years there. Objectives being: 1) Exploring new country while being young 2) Maximising savings Now after the 3-4 years I work, not sure on whether will be back in india or move to a new country ( Canada or somewhere in EU). Not too desperate for a much long stay in US. How objective does this decision seem? Your thoughts on this?
Hey bro, considering your priority being savings its always better to try for MNCs out there (they are on rapid hiring post pandemic) and try switching btw teams internally. Two reasons why this is better: 1.) you woun't be downgraded back to entry level SDE1 as would happen after masters from US 2.) No need to payoff loans (tech companies prefer skills over master at senior positions which you woun't deny :) ) 3.) You are not insecure about getting H1B visa over your 3 years after masters (if you woun't be able to live in US, whats the purpose of doing masters if savings were ur priority) I have been through same thoughts (I too am gonna graduate this year) and found out above reasons to convince me after sleepless brainstorming. Hope it helps :)
@@akhilmudassir4514 hey awesome insight. I personally feel that: 1) Switching internally takes more time and it's not fully in our control. Going for a master's ( low cost one with a good location) opens door for a whole new set of firms. 2) I am tbh fine with starting as SDE1 post masters as I will spending time as 0.5-1 years as complete SDE1 in India. Plus the compensation will outweigh the savings in india. 3) for the tuition fees and cost part, I don't plan to take loans as I will have saved decent amount before leaving for masters( 1 year FTE + 2 interns). Getting an intern during masters will highly compensate the fee part too I feel. 4) Not too desperate on the H1B part. But the 3-4 years which I work in the US definitely will help me save a good amount and get me a good experience. Plus good set of future opportunities. Also, maybe after 3-4 years of work, I plan to shift to a new country, stay in US itself some more time( If H1B gets success), or move back to india. So not sure on that part. Can't be wise enough to take that call now XD.
This was very informative video. Thanks for all the hardwork and efforts you have put in to get these details. Can you also please consider expenses for a married couple, Kids educations, insurances etc
Work hard and save for 10 years in USA, come back to India and invest that amount. Take up a stress free job in India and by 35 you can already feel settled.
Yes and those are covered under the insurance itself. Even OPD scans are completely covered under insurance. Which is mostly company provided. Hence did not include those.
Hey, really liking your content. Can you please share some thoughts on this? I am a 2021 passout and a Full Stack Dev in JS stack from Mumbai, working in a startup with 65K INR month and baffled for months regarding MS in the USA. My confusion is should I really take an Edu loan of 60-70 lakhs for MS as opposed to earning ~40+LPA(after some work exp obv) in India. Will there be a huge lifestyle upgrade if I get a good job in the USA as a developer? I get that pay is quite for SWE there but how is life there as an Indian in the USA, are there any shortcomings? My main concern is about the social life there and belongingness which you feel in India. Even if I pay out my loan in two years after working in the USA, and continue working afterward for a few more years, what's the plan after that? Am I thinking too much in long term? I also have a FOMO of getting a chance of living abroad and missing out on the whole new experience. So please share your thoughts on this.
You can take internal transfer from India to USA in certain companies quite easily. Apart from that, if you choose your universities correctly, you can do your MS at a net cost of 17 lakhs all included as well! 😊
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay Thank you for replying so quickly! Those "certain companies" are still very limited right? And 17 lakhs is just mind blowing to me in US, I stated 60-70 as net gross including living expenses as well (I confirmed it from some of my friends there). Maximum it can go to is 50 lakhs. But still I gotta research more on this. Also for me doing ms is just a way to get job in us, as I am not really not interested in studying further, so internal transfers as best way for me I guess, though they are hard to get, if my assumption is right
Nope. My friend did it from TAMU, and is now working as SDE at Google in Seattle. Her net cost came to be around 17 lakhs. Obviously, I have deducted the internship stipend that she got, as well as she was a grader in the university, so she got reduced fees, and a monthly income which took care of her living expenses and then some.
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyayokay thank you so much! Do you provide mentorship for freshers in CS in general? Would love to discuss quite a few things with you about coding and career in general.
For 55 lpa salary that you have considered for india it includes base pay+ variable+sign on bonus + worth of RSU for 1 year , right ? Also what is the experience that you are considering for SDE2?
Insightful video bhaiyya.. got to know about the savings part much clearly.. I have a question bhaiyya, in India jab promotion hota h toh extra stocks milte hai? And milte h toh initial grant se jyada milta h ki kam?
Hey Currently I am working as SDE2 at goldman sachs[3.2 years experience] India. Is it worth doing ms in usa and landing job. What would your advice be[from money perspective] since couldn't find any international transfers
I would say try for international transfer. If you switch jobs now by the time your ms would have completed, you could potentially land in USA with international transfer
Can you make a video on how mechanical engineering/Non CS people can become SDE in Big MNC like Amazon etc.. Complete road map.. Is it possible? Or only CS people get it?
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay Soumyajit Da I'm noticing that you have done a lot of research about abroad SDE from India and you also joined amazon as sde 2 which you have ranked best among all the companies for internal transfer... Hahahah nothing like that. Seattle is known to be Amazon's HQ, but all the major companies are present there. Microsoft hq is present in Redmond, which is just beside Seattle, apart from that Facebook, Google, snap all have good presence there.
Hey Soumyajit. Awesome video. Btw do people come back after 5-6 years in USA? I heard that 90 percent people don't come. So how should someone plan it out?
Also Bhai, Any sweet spot age to pursue MS. Is 5 years Indian experience too much for an MS ? Can I apply for SDE- 2/3 leveraging my Indian experience ?
Dude you didn't consider the fact that most of the expenses are being reimbursed by tech companies situated in Seattle or bay Area. They include food( bf, L, D) and also other miscellaneous expenses like gym etc. So I think savings is way more in the USA.
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay yes Amazon and apple won't give you free meals hence I mentioned " Most of the companies ". But the meals are highly subsidized.
Bro but if it is possible to get off campus placements in usa from India... Some say Amazon Microsoft usa is very tougher than to get in their india campuses..
not in usa their immigration laws does not allow it , you either need to have a undergrad / masters from a us university or take internal transfer from a company , but there are other countries like Germany , Singapore, Netherlands, London, Poland etc. which directly hires from India
Bro, what about the type of work, quality of work, ease of changing jobs. At one point you may feel that saving 35 l is better than 89 l provided there's autonomy and freedom
People generally rent shared apartments, instead of 3100 for rent you should keep this around 1500 dollars for san Francisco. You can find 4500 3bhk apartments for rent.
Makes sense. Absolutely,. But in comparison to Seattle the delta will still remain, albeit a bit less. Since considered independent living, across the board that's why the prices. How ever, i think so you will find it difficult to get a 3 bhk in the Palo Alto area at 4.5 K. You would have to move a lot out for that.
Hey, thanks for this video. As we know, Amazon is offering 45 L CTC to 2022 batch but just 32 L CTC to 2021 batch. So can you please confirm whether Amazon will increase the TC of 2021 batch when 2022 batch will join or not? Also, will the TC be revised for those of 2021 batch who have already joined?
TC won't increase, but if you perform well, based on your performance review (including forte), you will get a raise and you would be on path to SDE2 promotion
Hello Bhaiya if we know java then we should proceed with learning DSA or we should first learn c&c++ First year electronics student please guide bhaiya Btw learning alot from you Bhaiya
Can a software employee can earn this much salary per annum as per the chart you shown, still I can't believe...I am going to usa through my company, they will be offering 75000$ per annum...but the figures you mentioned is unbelievable
Umm, at amazon, if you go then as an sde 2 the minimum that you will earn is 252k/year at Seattle and 275k /yr in SF and NYC. Obviously Amazon pays much more than 75k /year to its developers(2years exp+) in India itself
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay got you bro, tell me onething bro...what should I do if i want to earn more money as you mentioned, i want to be part of my company for atleast a year and after that planning to switch to other company since I have 8 years of exp in different technologies like SAS, python and hadoop...so that I can get better compensation than what my company is offering now...will that work?
Nope. It contains the yearly salary. That one will get in a year. Why should income only contain the base salary?. When you get performance bonus etc every year and give Same income tax on them.?
U said 55 lakh for Indian salary but I think inhand will be just around 20lakh and remaining SOPs, please clarify this once and even the same with usa is that 220k$ will be given with inhand whole ?

It seems absolutely fine. Wanted to know why not go and do MS right now itself? How ever just be vary that, cost of living is extremely expensive in valley!
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay thanks. So the reasons for not doing it immediately are: 1) Currently at home due to covid since 3 years. Wanted to spend some time staying alone in Bangalore and be a bit responsible( 😅). 2) Working for one year will get me the tuition fees ( also a few stocks for long term 😅😂, so not missing out on that ) for the MS. 3) 1 year intern and 1 year FTE work will make the resume good and help in getting calls for job in USA. 4) Want to get better with leetcode and MERN stack before landing in the US. So I get some extra time to skill up and go there with a plan Also apart from San Jose State University, I am considering UT Dallas too ( one cousin is an alumni, so better guidance over there maybe). Reason I thought about SJSU is that there is a channel called ' NitinKumar Gove' there he says if done properly, MS in SJSU can be done within 25 Lakhs and ROI can be maximised. So considering that. What say? Can leave next year Jan directly too with 0.5 years exp. ( That option is there too).
They won't get the full amount because you would need to convert it in the Indian currency. And that will come at a premium. Depends from one bank to another

Thank you bhaiya for your awesome work
I have a confusion bhaiya , like agar Seattle m 89 lakhs save kiya nd agar wo banda india ayega to kya uss paise pe v tax lagega ? I means to say agar wo apne savings india m parents ko dede
Naa naa aise nai hota hai. Thoda sa lagta hai. But Income tax nahi lagega

Soumyajit had a query. So I am in a good reputed Tier 1 college and will be graduating this June. Currently interning a firm and got a PPO offer over there ( TC is above 25 Lakhs and work is full stack ( Node and react) ). What I am thinking is:
I complete 1 year exp as FTE in the firm and leave for MS in US( Prolly thinking about joining San Jose State Uni as fees is less ( Edu will be done within 30 lakhs upper bound) and is in the heart of the valley). Primary aim will be to get a job as SDE and work for 3-4 years there. Objectives being:
1) Exploring new country while being young
2) Maximising savings
Now after the 3-4 years I work, not sure on whether will be back in india or move to a new country ( Canada or somewhere in EU). Not too desperate for a much long stay in US.
How objective does this decision seem? Your thoughts on this?
Hey bro, considering your priority being savings its always better to try for MNCs out there (they are on rapid hiring post pandemic) and try switching btw teams internally.
Two reasons why this is better:
1.) you woun't be downgraded back to entry level SDE1 as would happen after masters from US
2.) No need to payoff loans (tech companies prefer skills over master at senior positions which you woun't deny :) )
3.) You are not insecure about getting H1B visa over your 3 years after masters (if you woun't be able to live in US, whats the purpose of doing masters if savings were ur priority)
I have been through same thoughts (I too am gonna graduate this year) and found out above reasons to convince me after sleepless brainstorming. Hope it helps :)
@@akhilmudassir4514 hey awesome insight. I personally feel that:
1) Switching internally takes more time and it's not fully in our control.
Soumyajit your take on this?
This was very informative video. Thanks for all the hardwork and efforts you have put in to get these details.
Can you also please consider expenses for a married couple, Kids educations, insurances etc
Soumyajit bhaiya pls make a video on software engineers living in Germany
Please make a detailed video on confluent like you have made for other companies.
Great video!!
Looking forward to finance for engineers playlist
Absolutely ❤️
Work hard and save for 10 years in USA, come back to India and invest that amount. Take up a stress free job in India and by 35 you can already feel settled.
Very informative and detailed video. Could you please consider Germany as next country in this series. Will really appreciate it.
Yes i will be taking European countries. Let me see which one I can take 🙌
Nice video. But you forgot a very important aspect which is medical expenses.
Medical expenses are extremely high in USA.
Yes and those are covered under the insurance itself. Even OPD scans are completely covered under insurance. Which is mostly company provided. Hence did not include those.
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay Oh okay. Got it!

I get that pay is quite
for SWE there but how is life there as an Indian in the USA, are there any shortcomings? My main concern is
about the social life there and belongingness which you feel in India.
Even if I pay out my loan in two years after working in the USA, and continue working afterward for a few more years,
what's the plan after that?
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay can you pls come with a video in full details how she did it in 17 lakhs
For 55 lpa salary that you have considered for india it includes base pay+ variable+sign on bonus + worth of RSU for 1 year , right ?
Also what is the experience that you are considering for SDE2?
SDE 2 experience is >2 yrs. Yes it will include the amount on which you will give your income tax yearly.
Please make a same video on Switzerland.
Insightful video bhaiyya.. got to know about the savings part much clearly.. I have a question bhaiyya, in India jab promotion hota h toh extra stocks milte hai? And milte h toh initial grant se jyada milta h ki kam?
It depends from one company to another. 😊
Hey Currently I am working as SDE2 at goldman sachs[3.2 years experience] India. Is it worth doing ms in usa and landing job. What would your advice be[from money perspective] since couldn't find any international transfers
I would say try for international transfer. If you switch jobs now by the time your ms would have completed, you could potentially land in USA with international transfer
any problem in INDIA ??

Can you make a video on how mechanical engineering/Non CS people can become SDE in Big MNC like Amazon etc.. Complete road map.. Is it possible? Or only CS people get it?

Btw why don't you consider Amazon UK are saving is less than India in uk ?
hey @Soumyajit Bhattacharyay are u planing to go to USA or stay in INDIA ?????
Right now haven't yet given a thought. Depends on the type of opportunities available. 😊
Not necessarily. All the things mentioned are not reimbursed by Amazon and apple itself. 😊
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay yes Amazon and apple won't give you free meals hence I mentioned " Most of the companies ". But the meals are highly subsidized.
Can I transfer internally to India after working only 1-2years in Amazon usa or any foreign country?
Yes you can.
@@tvgr8218 oh thanks bro.i am planning to do masters in usa
But how to become software developer in Seattle if we r graduating from india
No direct way. You would need to go there via internal transfer
Can you also make comparison with London / Glasgow as well?
Bro, what about the type of work, quality of work, ease of changing jobs. At one point you may feel that saving 35 l is better than 89 l provided there's autonomy and freedom
That I totally agree! Changing of jobs and freedom to do things totally depends on the VISA in which you enter US!
how could 35 be better, can't get any Work life balance in india i guess & the quality of work
bro make video on how to get a software engineer job remotely
Surely will make one.
Could you please increase English percentage in your videos
Love from South India ❤️👏👏
It is not LPA, when you are considering 4 years stocks. So make it CTC. As the actual LPA is much lower.
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay oh, sorry about that. So will the TC increase for 2021 batch?
TC won't increase, but if you perform well, based on your performance review (including forte), you will get a raise and you would be on path to SDE2 promotion
eye opener
can you do it for other countries like germany ?
Thanks. Yes absolutely ❣️

It seems absolutely fine. Wanted to know why not go and do MS right now itself?
How ever just be vary that, cost of living is extremely expensive in valley!
@@SoumyajitBhattacharyay thanks. So the reasons for not doing it immediately are:
1) Currently at home due to covid since 3 years.
So I get some extra time to skill up and go there with a plan
Also apart from San Jose State University, I am considering UT Dallas too ( one cousin is an alumni, so better guidance over there maybe).
If I want to send 40 k or 50 k dollars to my parents from US then how much tax will be added? Or they will get full amount?
They won't get the full amount because you would need to convert it in the Indian currency. And that will come at a premium. Depends from one bank to another
