If you work in a non-tech company(like say bank or something where IT is cost center) and that too in a mid tier city, it will cost much less but salary will also be less.
He is a Senior Software Engineer at Google. And since cost of living in Bay area is high, the pay will also be higher. So, easily it should be $300K+ per year.

LOL! 'Rich' is a weird term that has a different meaning for all. But more or less its about acquiring material wealth. Financial freedom is the thing I would like to chase instead. And being financially free just by not spending is a thing that I have never heard of - especially here in the USA.
