      The fully dry dates are previewed for sub-saharian exportation. You can rehydrate them by steaming then you eat.
      There's also other kind like early dates (called m'nagar / ratbe/ balah) half brown sugary and half yellow crunchy, also a kind of dates paste (to be used in Cookies), Rube (kind of dates syrup), dates honey 🍯, dates flour and more and more...

    Dates are just fantastic! I've had some very nice ones gifted to me once by a friend whose family had gone to Algeria to visit some of their family members still living there. They wanted to bring me something they knew to be very special, and oh my goodness were these things amazing! I remember just thinking, "why eat candy ever again?" They were sticky and sweet, and soft and almost a perfect candy replacement! They were just amazing. I really miss that family... Thanks for sharing this with us, Jared. It's so nice to be reminded of some of my happier moments in life. I hope everyone is doing well and having a great day!

    I have a good friend from Algeria (but born in East Germany - she went "back" after reunification. She always brought me some dates from her own palm orchard in the desert when she visited her family in Germany. And holy sh... those Algerian dates make the store sold ones look like crap. Amazing! She also brought me candied orange and lemon rind from her own garden citruses. I attempted to make it myself multiple times but I have no clue whatsoever how she managed to make them THAT delicious.

    The most facisnating Date to me is the Judean date. It was lost for a long time, before being revived from 2000 years old seeds. I don't know if the fruits are being sold commercially, but as a plant nerd I would adore being able to buy them one day.

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  ปีที่แล้ว +52

      I would love to try this one... maybe one day

    • @alasdair_scott
      @alasdair_scott ปีที่แล้ว +50

      While it's cool that they managed to germinate the 2000 year old seeds, the Judean date isn't a specific variety - the genetics of the seeds recovered are diverse, and are captured in various modern day populations. They aren't being sold commercially (yet), as there are only a few plants, and the dates are less domesticated (much smaller, larger seeds, less productive) than modern day varieties. It's more interesting for historical reasons - for instance, the fact that the genetic makeup is so diverse indicates that the area was a strong trade hub.

    I actually quite like the "Fully dried" date variety, but I treat it less like a date and more like a "nut", like a peanut or a cashew if that makes sense, and it's also used to make a variety of product from date-sugar, to "Rouina" which is a powder made from a variety of ingredients (like dates, chickpeas, spices.....etc) that is mixed with water to create a sort of "paste" that is eaten for breakfast or with coffee...etc

    I like the dry dates the most! I like the tough texture. Even when I buy gummy candy I leave it to dry a bit so they become tougher :)

    The best quality date you could have is the one where when you pick it out of the branch, the fruit just slides out of the stem, and the stem actually stays on the branch. That's peak Deglet Nor.

    The ripeness factor it important in many palm seeds. Coconuts, ipa, dates as well as other edible palm seeds. I find it very interesting and enjoy your explorations.

    I wonder if you can add some moisture to the dried date to cook with? id be curious to see if they reconstitute like a pepper.

    in tolga (biskra) there is a variety of date that is transparent and so sweet that it cannot be packaged; it is made as soon as it is picked and there is another that has no pit; they are rarely found in the market

    SO WEIRD.... I think I saw a picture 30 minutes ago from one of your posts about a Vietnam tour, the picture was probably of something like Longans-on-the-vine, but it prompted me to think you had posted a video on Dates.... then THIS gets posted, like 5 minutes ago 😱🤯

    Just a tidbit for anyone wanting to eat fully dry dates, please take out the seed and wash the inside of the dates. I've eaten them for years and they almost always have dead bugs in them (probably because they're hollow on the inside from the extra dryness compared to the soft dry dates). I've recently ate dry Palestinian medjool dates (I usually eat the soft wet Palestinian medjools so this was new for me). I bit half of it before looking taking out the seed and saw dead bugs inside (kinda look like weevils).

      Yes I always open them first, and take out the seed. Sometimes there is bugs (harmless but icky) or black mold (harmless kind)

      depends on the variety of the date. Here in Pakistan most varieties do not have this problem.

    15:29 there's so many different types that we in the north don't get them all , the dates we have in the noth are majorly exported from the south east of the country specifically the capital city of dates biskara but there's other types that are native to other areas like the south west that are completely unknown the place where i live

  • @2000eae
    @2000eae ปีที่แล้ว

    If you can go to the south of the country, there are vibrantly colored date varieties (Yellow Red and Green, some with 2 colors) that are only eaten fresh, don’t last more than 2-3 when picked, and are not available in the Capital City, because they spoil super fast.
    You might want to try them Ghardaïa or further south.

    As far as less ripe dates go, Thailand also has some. I'm not sure if my aunt was able to get them because she knew the person that grew them or if they were more generally available, but they were certainly good. Now thanks to this video Algeria is added to my list of places to travel.

    When I was walking around homeless in Miami Beach, I lived off dropped dates and coconuts. At other times when I wasn't homeless but still no money for food...dates. One time these landscaping guys were cutting down the dates from a date palm, and they let me bring home a trash bag full of dates.
