  • Neil deGrasse Tyson sits down with Adam Carolla to talk about stimulating curiosity and the quest for knowledge in other people. Other topics of conversation include the impact of social media, the limits of AI, and potential alternative sources of power. Later they talk about stimulating innovations, political outrage, and how quickly actual progress can happen. Before heading out, the guys chat about racing physics.

    Being a nuclear engineer, I enjoyed your talk about "nukes" and completely agree with both of you. It was the science behind using nuclear energy that got me into the field. The one thing I would add about the development over the years that hindered safer versions of nuclear energy is it takes a complex infrastructure to reach that safer endpoint. Yes, you need a complex infrastructure to develop the modern and safer aircraft but you are not handling material that could kill you in short order (namely acute radiation sicknes). That danger, while it can be dealt with, requires a good amount of money, planning, and equipment to make progress. It is only now with the increase in computational power, new material technologies, and the need for zero carbon that has brought down the cost of developing safer reactors with an increasing need for them. Hope this helps. Take care.

      Do you see nuclear power as ever being a reliable answer to sustainable energy? Im mostly ignorant on this topic but Ive been wondering why dont we just dump a lot of resources into advancing nuclear power to the point where its the majority power supplier and we can turn “oil into salt” and stop the fracking nonsense,

      @@kryptkeeper457 There is a lot going on with advanced reactors that are different from current commercial reactors. 18:27 He goes into comparing the old analog technology to today's digital technology and contrasts it with a large portion of society being farmers in the past and since those people had to do alot of physical work they did not need to "work out" after work. He then infers that's why built workout gyms in today's age (since people have day jobs in offices and such). Next, he postulates that we need to apply the same logic to the mind? I'm not entirely sure what he is imagining we need for the mind? Some sort of mind workout? Or on the contrary, a mind break?
      If anything, I think we would need al mind relaxation technology, which alot in part would involve sleep.

    Gotta wonder if Neil and Adam are aware of thorium based molten salt nuclear reactors like LFTR. Pretty much solves all of the problems and dangers of traditional nuclear reactors. They were tested successfully in the 50s and 60s as a possible solution to creating a nuclear powered airplane. Not only would they revolutionize energy on earth, but would be a game changer to space travel.

    • @BuGGyBoBerl
      @BuGGyBoBerl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      and why you think they arent here already? nuclear lobby is huge btw. tbh i see that a lot recently and i also see it pushed (some would say propaganda) everywhere atm. did you research its disadvantages? i129 and pa231 still leaves the long term storage problem. efficiency isnt that great like all nuclear power btw. profilieration risks of the thorium cycle are quite high for example. overall what confuses me most, is people always hang up to some conspiracies why this stuff didnt happen (your example being implemented) but dont give a flying fuck about others maybe just pushing a thing thats not the case.
      so there are good reasons why its not used a lot nowadays. revolutionizing energy on earth? definitely not for now.

    • @TheFoxSaid
      @TheFoxSaid 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BuGGyBoBerl LFTR is over 95% efficient compared to solid fuel burn. The amount of waste is a literal fraction, and a lot of those isotopes are medically and scientifically valuable. Kirk Sorenson of Flibe energy has already demonstrated the reactors profitability by JUST selling the biproducts The thorium cycle creates U233. It has very hard gamma radiation. So, sure you could build a bomb, it'll kill you and if you take it anywhere it'll send off every nuclear sensor in the world. It's inability to create useful nuclear weapons was part of the reason the gov moth balled the project in favor of light water reactors that created plutonium. LFTR cannot produce plutonium. Todays nuclear regulations are based on solid fuel and pressure vessels full of water. 2 things LFTR is not. There are also no long term fuel contracts which is a primary driver for the uranium manufacturing markets. Let alone the public fear of anything nuclear that is driving politics and thus policy.

    • @BuGGyBoBerl
      @BuGGyBoBerl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheFoxSaid and still we lack a proper institute showing that it does exactly what you say and that its super efficient. with effficient you maybe mean energy in and output. but it costs a lot money. the evidence for all these "miracle" abilities is lacking. it needs a lot of investment to get to that level which costs money. proliferate risks are high, the reactor sizes are smaller , issues with criticality safety, etc.
      you also have nations who dont care about nuclear weapons not wanting to build them. experts in GB said it takes like 40 years so we get it profitable for example. canada denied it because ofthe proliferate risks etc.
      also while it produces less highly toxic waste, it still produces waste that needs long term storage.

    • @TheFoxSaid
      @TheFoxSaid 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BuGGyBoBerl LFTR was tested and ran successfully at hanford in the 60s. In fact the Chinese government did a tour and was given all of the paperwork and data 5 years ago and are currently building a prototype that will be operational in 2025. This has been on the books for a long time. I think you are conflating other MSR types vs LFTR specifically. AS far as efficiency I am comparing solid fuel burn, which burns about 1% of the uranium at the center of the tube before it is removed form the reactor and stored, vs a fully mixed liquid fuel that can burn 95%+ of the fuel before it is removed and stored.

    • @BuGGyBoBerl
      @BuGGyBoBerl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheFoxSaid it was tested but it was far away from showing evidence for all the promises people make about it. its one thing to get that thing going and energy off it, and another to actually achieve all the promises. well im curious what they do with the 2025 prototype. if it works out fine. so far there is no reason to cheer for it like its a miracle. it has disadvantages (mentioned before).
      yes the use of the mass is interesting but what about the downsides. also its not just about how much energy you get per mass. long term storage. where is it?

    Once an atheist scientist colleague of his came to his lab and saw a wonderful model of our solar system (what was known up to that point anyway) which I think Newton himself had designed along with another colleague of his, and the atheist asked him: "What a wonderful display. Who made it?" To which Newton responded: "Nobody." The atheist said: "C'mon don't be ridiculous. Somebody has to have designed that wonderful model!!!!". Newton's response: "Yet my friend, you believe the actual planets and sun that display is modeled after came from nowhere, that no one made it!" Profound answer indeed!!!!

    The reason top speed could be relevant, in contrast to acceleration or the rate in which the earth spins, is that you would be driving on a road and therefore you would likely be passing objects faster and making more frequent turns that require heightened attention and reflexes. So it's not completely irrelevant... although I'm assuming that Neil and Adam both just prefer the feeling of acceleration and were wanting to defend that.

    42:30, I think the anti-abortionist's thinking in this regard is that, since the "morning after" pill causes the fertilized egg, aka "the fetus" or "the baby" to be eliminated, that it is just chemical abortion. And if a person believes that "life begins at conception", then it is also "homicide", or "killing a human", aka murder. So, from the POV of someone who believes that a fertilized egg is a human, this makes perfect sense.

      The problem is that the more complex the equipment, like robotics or automation in general, the more chance for failure. For robotics to maintain robotics, or automation, higher and higher levels of complexity would come into play - increasing the failure rate. There is a point, and it's not that far in, where the gains move into the negative column. It's hard to beat the flexibility and adaptability of an appropriately trained Technician with the proper supplies and tools. Just taking one aspect of the job: The Technician already comes with the tools to diagnose wear via observable damage, audible sensation, tactile sensation via heat or vibration through touch on a variety of complex and challenging to reach surfaces. If you are talking AI as the source to make robotics intelligent enough to take over maintenance processes then there is still a long ways to go. AI has difficulty interfacing with the real world. Take for example an O-ring. There are literally thousands of types of O-rings, in different shapes, different sizes, different hardness and different materials. If the exact O-ring is unavailable, what will an AI do? A good Technician in an example like this will adapt to get production back up until the proper part is available. This is a viable option, though obviously not preferred, in an industry scenario. There is nothing available that gets anywhere close to the flexibility of a good human Technician. Never is a very long time, and I'm not saying that humans will never be replaced, but it won't be happening soon.

    Where does a solar panel system for a house cost $100,000 USD? He must have a 20,000 sq. ft. house or something because $10,000 to $20,000 is more like it. Regarding nuclear power, Fukashima was built by engineers who had learned from the Chernobyl accident. It is hard to engineer safety into the unanticipated. Even if that could be done, in fission reactors the used fuel/control rods are highly radioactive and they are waste that no-one can figure out how to safely dispose of. Deep burial is the current best practice but earthquakes and volcanism can bring radioactive waste back to the surface over large time frames, and since the half life of some of the fission products is about 200,000 years this is a problem. If water tables change radioactive waste can be leached into the groundwater as well. If we can get fusion reactors working the waste problem is solved, since fusion produces innocuous elements as waste; nuclear fusion would solve all of humanities energy problems.

    Programming/coding needs to be made more accessible to the masses. Like universal healthcare.
    Of course there is a few million Indian coders breaking into the industry annually, supposedly proving it's already accessible enough. Supposedly the phenomenon can be attributed to the increased efficiency of the Indian math education system. I hear about those wizz guys all the time. Being a daily consumer of coding products from the West, as are more and more people every passing day, I wonder when was the last time I used any of their work.
    Perhaps hundreds or thousands of them, the lucky few who got their break, I have used their work here and again. I wonder where the millions that remain are employed and how rewarding their employment might be. And we're just talking Indians here. Expanding this argument to the rest of the world, a question starts forming.
    Is programming/coding accessible enough?
    From a personal standpoint, it isn't. Maybe I am a little lazy or maybe my mathematical reasoning is flawed. But not in any significant degree more than 9 out of 10 people who went through the educational system of any developed country on this planet.
    The more the skills that qualify a person for any form of employment, from the most basic to the most advanced, are being centered around a substantial comprehension of coding/programming, the more myself, and the rest of us 9 out of 10, will find it inreasingly more challenging to be competitive in the modern labour market.

      As for energy, while hoping to make a connection to the op.
      We use oil the way we do because of the way the markets are structured, the structures that feed the markets energy are structured, the structures that feed those structures with funds are structured...the way our entire society is structured. Which also reflects on the way skills like programming/coding are both taught and learned by modern humans.
      The language I use to code programming languages is made by this one guy.
      The couple of dozen programming languages used to code everything else are made by those other guys.
      Everything else on the global market of consumer products and services, that is significant enough to be in that market, that is made possible through the use of those programming languages is made by a few million other people.
      The vast majority of those people I never knew, never will know. How doesn't that resemble socialist realism? A centrally administered economy and thereby, society.
      I want to make my energy. I want to build my car. I want to build, furnish and equip my own home, according to the needs those it will accommodate define.
      I want to do that using the tools I made for myself and I would like all the information I might need to be available in public forum, free to use and manipulate.
      To the extent that the resources I require are not readily available in my immediate environment I will trade for those in exchange for custom services and products. That works already.

      I believe that sort of restructuring would lead to a rationalization in the way that we exist in our environment.
      If you really want the finest house, you will become capable of building your own. If you like fast cars, you will build your own using your own tools. If are not the materialist sort, you will still build the basic infrastructure any human needs to survive and thrive, using the exact same kind of tools that one would have used to build mansions in the sky. Only different. Because you don't want a mansion. You want to build a nice cozy little place. With a telescope or similar equipment capable of substantial observations, perhaps, because... why not?
      As long as as I can get or mine the materials in a way that is sustainable both to my environment and my preferred way of life.

      It's only ethically less, but it's not really less. Three million dollars is still far more than two hundred dollars and does far more and they didn't need to give any (many people don't give any, in fact, even if they have enough or a lot). Secondly, studies have shown that a large number of charities are actually unhelpful, not helpful. For example, a massive amount of Western aid work and charity in Africa has made things worse, not better. One needs to give to the right charities to do good.

      In Ontario Canada. A solar panel set up that can power a small amount of your home, ie fridge, maybe you furnace, lights and a few outlets, cost around $80,000. It doesn't matter how big your home is, only the loads you wish to power. Batteries aren't cheap, neither is the set up. No solar array will power your ENTIRE home without spending a huge sum of money. Also it only lasts as long as the battery has a charge, if its cloudy for a week, you will not have the same amount of power available as when it is clear and sunny...

      That was a really stupid idea but the US Airforce wanted some. So they could fly bombers for long periods of time for bombing missions. So they paid for the development of a reactor at Oak Ridge. The engineers thought it was a bad idea but they were getting paid to experiment with nuclear power. And they actually built a very interesting reactor that was very safe. It was an MSR, Molten Salt Reactor. Many people believe these will be among the next generation of nuclear power. The reactor worked very well but navy designed water-cooled reactors became dominant and the MSRs were forgotten. Many people are hoping to develop new MSR reactors to provide much safer, cleaner and cheaper reactors, Over the next decade, we may see a number of new Generation 4 reactors including MSR reactors as a vital option for low carbon energy. The MSRs will not explode or meltdown. Even without human operators.
