Thank you for your story about Chinese in Indonesia. My family has been in Canada for over 120 years and we are Cantonese. My ancestors were deal with a hefty Chinese Exclusion Head Tax of up to $500. My grandfather told me he had to work 5 years to pay off the $500. Perhaps they were also had the same discrimination and suppression by the Colonialists. Thanks again for the history lesson.

I still couldn't wrap my head around that a young person like you are so into the little known history of the Chinese diaspora in South East Asia 😱Thanks to you that I learned so much about the history of their arrival in the foreign land 🙏 I can't help but feel a sense of deep admiration for their success in a country that they knew so little about. I hope that the present-day youth appreciates the fruits that their forebears had worked so hard for them. It must have taken you days to find out their stories and the black-and-white pictures are just wonderful testimonies of their lives. I would think that they only appeared in obscure academic books. You may want to consider having a buy-me-a-coffee option that many youtubers have. I will certainly buy you one 😀

Thanks for sharing the history of Lan Fang Republic to your audience. Hope more people are made aware of it and the history will not be lost. The irony is many Indonesians and even West Kalimantanese are not aware of its existence. I myself for example, as a West Kalimantanese, the first time I heard about Lan Fang Republic was during my High School year in the 90s in Australia during my Bahasa Indonesia Malaysia (BIM) class. There is another irony to that BIM class, while the students were mostly Malaysian and Indonesian, the teacher (the one sharing the story about Lan Fang Republic) was in fact a white Australian. Luckily it was a class discussing Indonesian and Malaysian literature and history rather than about linguistic skills thus the ethnicity of the teacher and us student was less relevant.

If you are EU4 player, you would know about this Kongsi Federation when you play in Nusantara area. You will saw it pop up as early as 15th century because Ming 'explode' and they lose province around Canton. Idk if you already cover this country, but I suggest you to talk about Kingdom of Tungming where according to EU4, it existed because of Ming lose their coastal province, so Admiral Koxinga order Ming's Armada to go to Taiwan and form a kingdom.

I am a 100% real Hakka person, speaking Hakka fluently, living in Singkawang 18 years before go to collage in other city, and I know a lot compared to most of my friends, and yet I still don't know the history until your video comes to youtube. There were no person in Singkawang had ever told me about the Lanfang Republic. I never thought or heard about it at all, even the "keyword/clue" of the story. I don't know why the history was lost, but thanks to your video now I can tell them the story. In the last few months I learn a lot about countries, history, and culture that turns out could help me understand myself, people around me, and society much better. Taiwan to China is a woman ran away from her husband without formal Act of divorce.
the husband still consider her as his wife, and wants to bring her back home.
However, she refuses to return to her (ex)husband, because now she's in love with uncle Sam...

Awesome video! Im currently on a bus from Kuching to Pontianak and fascinated by this history of Chinese in the region. I love history and Chinese cultures. The Langfang Republic, vassal of the Qing Dynasty, straddling the equator far from their homeland. While white Raja kings were ruling their own kindgom in Sarawak. All the while among headhunter locals and aggressive European colonial powers. Borneo is fascinating!
Just FYI I'm from California and I've done a good amount of research on the Chinese immigrants and miners that also went there. A few of your images, for sure the one at 7:38, are pictures from California and the 1849 Gold Rush. Not Borneo or Kalimantan. About 600,000 Chinese migrated to California through San Francisco from about 1840-1900 to work in mines and build the railroads. They weren't always treated great in tte US, but still its a long legacy establishing Chinese Americans. Maybe inspiration for another video. 😊

Minutes 9:19 is a picture of Catholic misionaris who come to teach people in West Kalimantan. They first come in Singkawang at 1921 and create Holland Chinese Schools in Singkawang and Pontianak. I know because I research about this.

Hi im Dayak Bidayuh from Sarawak East Malaysia. My Ancestor is one of those who attacked The Lan Fang Chinese Republic during Rajah James Brooke Kingdom Of Sarawak Vs Lan Fang after Lang Fang Triad (Kingdom of Sarawak never considered Lan Fang as Kingdom but Kongsi Gelap also known as Black Market Triad because they never associate themself with China Manchu Gov) attack Kuching Capital Of Kingdom If Sarawak.Rajah James Brooke badly Escape and save by the Dayaks and assemble his Sarawakian Rangers troops and attack Lan Fang Republic along with Dutch and British and Destroy it.Because of that Lan Fang Republic fall and not able to supply Gold to China Manchu Dinasties in China.Manchu Dinasties badly fall because of not enought Gold).

@Fearless Passports Please note that there are many books written
on the biography of Lee Kuan Yew In these books there is not even any
mention on the two words of Lan Fang. Lee Kuan Yew has nothing
nothing to do with Lan Fang.bHis great grandfather came straight from DaPu District GaobeiTown
    to Singapore. In his
ancestral village he funded the remake of
    his ancestral records.族譜.
Every Lee family in the village was given a copy. There is no mention that anyone from Lee Kuan Yew village had ever migrated to Kalimantan all these years. People like to link to famous person.

Very interesting story for the ancient Chinese expatriate in the south Asia region indeed. It will let the current Mainlanders, especially the younger generation understand how hard living these Chinese expat had gone through. There is an unhealthy bias against Chinese expat that they will be labelled with "non-patriotic".

    • @wewenang5167

well if they are not the citizen of mainland china and a citizen of other country...WHY THE HELL SHOULD THEY STILL BE PATRIOTIC TO THE MAINLAND CHINA? They should be patriotic to the land and country that they were born in not where their ancestor came from. Are you saying all overseas chinese must be patriotic to the CCP? This Is why the local and native people where overseas chinese stay did not fully trust their chinese citizen. Because a lot of you guys are not patriotic to where you live but still clinging on to your middle kingdom china when in reality you were born and raised in a different country! YOU SHOULD BE PROUD IF THE MAINLANDERS CHINESE CALL YOU UN PATRIOTIC BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT A CITIZEN OF MAINLAND CHINA!

  • @konyaku3072

Republic in old times is just sugarcoated term for 'perkampungan'. It just temporary settlement of certain people. It is not unusal across South East Asia having 'republic' by sailors. Kongsi even paid tributes to sultanate. It shows no sovereignity as it comes with unclear boundary of land also. "Why it is unkown that there is Lanfang Republic?" Because it is not yet a sovereign state. In old times, to be a sovereign state, it is important to have physical Regalia. Lanfang settlement has many signs of self governing but lack of regional recognition and symbol.
