6:38 no It's because the M1 Max has 2 prores encoder decoder compared to one on the m4. the new M4 is a downgrade in ram, memory bandwidth, gpu cores as well. but M4 supports raytracing and has faster npu...

Hi Yuka and thanks for the comparison. I think the export difference is due to the fact that the M1 Max has two video encoders and 400 GB of memory band width vs one video encoder on the M4 and 120 GB of memory band width. The M4 Pro would get closer to the M1 Max in export time. Cheers!

Ah interesting! Thanks for the input. Blender export times were faster on M4, so it might be DaVinci using mainly GPU that added to this result.

@ Ah, I didn’t pick up on that. I would have bet on the M1 Max being faster. You should give the M4 Pro a test drive. I have the 14/20 with 24 GB of RAM and it’s really fast. Cheers and looking forward to the next video.

Agreed. With the M4 generation, only having the one encoder in the base and pro chips it is basically a hand brake on how well they can perform. I strongly suspect for many video tasks that an M4 pro could match or beat an M2 or M3 Max, if it had the two encoders. The memory bandwidth in the M4 Pro should be enough and the optimisations in the chip, including the GPU cores should help it, but none of that is going to really get the most from the chip when everything has to be piped through that single encoder. At this point, this is just Apple ensuring a tier model works and supports upgrades to the M4 Max for video content creators.

I don’t think the hardware video encoders even matter in real world usage. Encoding with hardware is almost always worse than x264/x265 (which are wayyy more CPU intensive). In these areas, the m4 will smoke the m1 max

Thanks Yuka! I appreciated this evaluation in particular since I have been considering the same model upgrade. I think I'll stay with my M1Max for awhile ;)

I’m in the same boat as you. I currently have an 16-inch M1 Max with a 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 64GB of RAM, and 4TB of storage. While I’m considering an upgrade, my M1 Max has been fantastic and doesn’t really hold me back in any way. The only scenario where I’d upgrade is if I go for an M2 Ultra or an M4 Max Studio as a secondary computer, mainly to avoid the throttling that laptops naturally face.
That said, if I were limited to just getting a laptop, I’d still go for the M4 Max 16-inch model. It offers better thermal management than the 14-inch and is more reliable for intensive tasks. Plus, like all M Max Macs, the M4 Max includes dual encoders, which make it a powerhouse for video workflows, especially for tasks like rendering and export.

All of the max chipsets have dual video encoders. That along with the additional ram will almost always result in a faster export. Also, the software companies are not utilizing the internal SSD to its full capacity. As long as the SSD is at least 1,000 megabytes per second which all of the M series Macs and many external SSD hard drives; you will be fine.

I moved from a M1 Max Mac Studio to a M4 Pro 12 Core Mac Mini. I am a music producer... and it was a significant improvement. If I were a video creator, I would have stuck with the M1 Max.

for me, one of the most important reasons to upgrade is brightness, I like to work outdoor and it's an important aspect for me. Speaking of performance I am still not sure, M1 pro still blasts at least for my type of tasks (software dev). Of course it would be nice to improve my next.js build time but in general it's an infinite race.... apple made M1 series too good :)

thank you. put in an order to replace my M1 Max 64g, 4tb with same specs on the M4. Wanted to order the nano but seems a lot of photographers and high end graphics users say it's not exact enough for colors/crispness. Good luck .

I'm still running a 2019 16" MacBook Pro, primarily bc I don't want to pay a fortune for the amount of RAM I need. I'm debating keeping it since I do still like it, but getting a Mac mini and accessing it remotely. Can't get 64gb ram in a MBP w/o stepping up to a M4 Max, but can get it in an M4 Pro Mac mini, go figure!

I don't know why you were surprised the Max wes better for exporting. Max models have 2 video encorders, pro only has 1. This is common knowledge.
If you had a more beefed up pro model with 20 GPU it would be a lot closer however.

I decided to upgrade from my M1 Air 16GB and it feels like M1 Max is basically a steal right now. You can get a used one with 64GB/2TB for the same price as the base M4 Pro model, which to me seems like a really nice deal.

How do you have a youtube plaque with less than 5K subs?
I enjoyed the comparison, but I think with your workflow you would greatly benefit from even the M4 Pro base model. You get MUCH MUCH BETTER VALUE from the base M4 pro (without breaking the bank)!
When it comes to the high-end M4 Pro chip (with 14 + 20 cores) compared to the base M4 Pro (12+16 cores), the difference in the benchmarks is absolutely minimal.
Personally I got the M4 Pro base model in black last week, couldn't be happier with it... but I did upgrade from a 2019 27" iMac (Intel) so obviously it makes a huge difference :)

    • @YukaOhishi

This is not my only channel :) Working on my second plaque! haha
Yeah I think M4 Pro would be better option for me personally, but also I don't HAVE to upgrade, so I'm on the fence here! As I mentioned in the video, if I were coming from an intel chip or M1 chip, the M4 base would be a really nice upgrade and super cost effective!
