M1 Max v M4 Max - Is It Really Still Not Time To Upgrade?!

- Ive always wanted to make one of these new Apple Computer vs Previous Apple Computer videos. I bought the new M4 Max Macbook Pro and I am honestly blown away at how little difference it makes in the feel of my every day usage; video editing, autocad, photo editing work.
The M1 Max was just, well, apparently about 4 years ahead of its time.
Nevertheless, in this video I go over the benchmarks, geekbench, cinibench, hard drive speed, SD card reader speed - and I talk about how you might still want to wait for the next one. Unless you really want this thing, then by all means I want you to have it.

I work in IT at my company and although were on a 3 year upgrade policy. I should have already upgraded to the M3, but Im still on my M1 because it just feels great for my everyday workload. This video completely summed up my experience and Im only upgrading to an M4 because the M1 is considered “End of Life” in my workplace. Wild!
The M4pro or max is significantly faster than M1 M2 M3.
It runs on ARMv9.2a ISA having SSVE2 and SME2 that makes it next level compared to only NEON
@@PKperformanceEUi don’t doubt that one bit. Just adding to the sentiment of this video based on everyday feel and use without getting too much into the specs. Of course I do any heavy work on my machine other than keeping a ton of Chrome windows open
Yeah, the most ‘intensive’ things I do on it are 2D autoCAD and editing these videos. But I bought a base model m4 Mac mini as well as this computer and it turns out THAT thing can 100% handle these two tasks without compromise. So I’m fully in the overpowered for what I do camp.
The 14 inch model has smaller fans, smaller heatsink, less heat dissipation volume and fewer heat venting holes at the bottom of the screen compared to the 16 inch. So the fans are going to have higher RPMs and having to work harder. The two models aren’t the same thermally even if the 14 doesn’t throttle.
That definitely all checks out with what I’m seeing here! Even when those fans are going basically full on, they’re not very loud at all, though.
Dude, I really love your editing style! The intro, the bike footage with you in the background, the flow is amazing. I have a 16GB M1 Pro Macbook Pro and it handles everything I do (coding, LLMs, music production, CAD, etc.) just fine. But like you said in the video, I should just get one! That's why I watch these videos anyway - to motivate myself to take the plunge. Nah, let me watch another one first haha
Hahah, yeah, I will admit; after now having had this M4 Max for about 3 weeks, Its honestly no different at all from my M1 Max, I could have waited for M5. But only because I was already never waiting for anything and I guess Im now a "Power User" enough for me to need the beastliest offering available. I don't regret getting it, though - and neither will you!
Great presentation! I am so glad you put in the last scene of cleaning the MacBooks, it was driving me mad.

How did you do that at 5:50 I want to know if I can have dual screen setup like that just using my macbook that was super cool it could change my workflow.
I literally did nothing to set it up! I think because both computers are signed into my account, it does the same thing an iPad does if its sitting next to your mac. This same thing happens with iPad. But it totally set itself up! It was a surprise and unplanned in the video

I'm with ya on that. Was going to go M4 Max upgrade from my maxed out M1 Max but I'm feeling like maybe waiting for the M5 since at least from what we know from Ming-Chi Kuo and TSMC leaks there will be a newer/redesigned GPU for M5 Pro/Max.
Very nice way to broach the subject.
My choice will be to wait for people to follow your advice and buy their old M1 Max :)

Hahaha, absolutely love the takaway/conclusion at the end. I wonder if getting the same size macbook pro would effect the scores anymore (like, if the 16in M4 is faster).
Well, although the fans do crank up, I never got the processors to actually slow down, so they didn’t thermal throttle. I’m sure the 16 would be marginally quieter, but these fans were still quite quiet.
Are you running the 14" M4 MAX? That would make a difference with thermal throttling....
I never got it to thermal throttle, but it definitely spun up its fans a lot faster than the 16” did. It does seem like they might have finally beat the thermal throttle on the smaller body with better cooling, or the M4 is just efficient enough that it doesn’t quite get hot enough to slow itself down.
@@SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE I'm going to wait till the m5 model before diving in. I boycotted this years update as there was so much wrong with the new Xcode updates. I mean the new Xcode ai stuff is just terrible.
The issue I have with my M1 Max is the refresh rate on the new Dell 40" cannot be taken advantage of. The second issue is the battery, I do not get even 6 hours out of it and never did from new. Apart from that, it is nice.
That is a bummer about refresh rate. The one thing I would say about battery life is to go try a comparably powerful windows computer. I have a Victus "gaming" laptop, which has an RTX 3050 - its abotu the same graphical performance as the M1 Max for video editing. I use it to play games on planes, and that things battery will literally die in about 45 minutes! Its sucking down close to 150 watts!
Could you test Topaz Video AI, Photo AI and Gigapixel on the two MacBooks. I have yet to see anyone test these programs for speed comparison.

I’m an old school Contrarian. Someone tells me, “you don’t need the Max.” Immediately, Scarface (Push it to the Limit) starts playing in my head, and before Paul Engemann can say, “Oooo yeaaheeahh”, the decision has been made.
yes, the chassis size make a big difference. If you see geekbench score between 14 and 16 inches the 16 always wins.

I am using a Sony a7siii with a sigma 50mm f/1.4 and the B cam is a Sony a7iv with actually an APSC 50mm 1.8 on a slider. Hence the occasional SUPER dark vignette
Sounds like the smart money move is buy an m1max if you need something today, unless you export 12-20 hours of multicam 4k or 8k video daily.

Why wait till 2026 the real smart money move is to wait till 2032 for m12 this would be a real monster compared to m4

@smidgeondutchrabbit haha yes I did. I taped some cardboard on top of them and sprayed a little parts cleaner on them. I tested it out with a square of styrofoam first and felt pretty confident!
is the M4 base enough if i need like more than 10 tabs, sometimes 20, open at the same time on firefox? Or should i go for M4 Pro? thanks
Yep, the base model is plenty for that now that they’ve moved up to 16gb of RAM. What you’re describing is a RAM heavy use, not a processor heavy use. But this thing I equipped for that
Hello Mr., is the RAM of this device sufficient for rendering programs and engineering programs such as Revit and CAD? I use the Parallels program for the Revit program.

120 giga BITS, that’s 15 giga BYTES. There’s 8 bits in a byte. Also for bidirectional it’s 80 gigabits which in practice is still slower than the fastest modern NVME drives once real world overheads are factored in.

That is istatistica pro. There’s a free version too and you have to get a separate download for ‘sensors’ to see temps

Im using iStatistica Pro. Theres an additional istatistica download for temp sensors.
The M4 Max is the only that supports four external displays at 4K 144Hz

@user-wn2ho5ij5f yet I’ve been using them side by side for a while transferring workflows and it’s distinctly noticeable. Also the M4 was paid by a new employer so I didn’t have to BYOD… (I was perfectly happy using my M1 Max) so think what you will.

Dude... you should have used 2 16 inch Macbooks... It's not a fair comparison to use a 14inch vs a 16inch.

I agree - but I bought the 14". And that actually speaks even higher to the new cooling design. The 14" M4 is STILL very quiet, even when the fans are going hard, and it still NEVER overheats, it does not thermal throttle during the heaviest testing I did. So the new fan design is able to keep up with the heat; even though, I agree, the M4 16" would run the fans slower and be even cooler. But all we need is for it to not thermal throttle, and they've managed to hit it. And unless you're in a silent room, the fan noise is not excessive like it has been in the past.

@@WinrichNaujoks Yes on both counts! Well, to be precise, I taped a piece of cardboard the same size as my laptop to the tops of my laptops and saturated that with parts cleaner and set THAT on fire.

Why does your M1 max look thicker than your M4 Max??? is it camera trickery? Aren't they the exact same width?
it's sad these insanely expensive machines are only on par with 3080. Very sad. But not surprising. Just compare a 30 min magic mask vlog type video tracking time vs a windows machine with a 4090 and it'll blow your mind. Apple Silicon sucks hard for real GPU tasks.
I had to double check just now when I read this comment, but the M1 Max is a TINY bit thicker than the M4 Max. Though it looks a lot thicker for some reason, maybe the colors and the light??

@@PKperformanceEU it’s weird just how many different answers I came across when trying to look up that one statistic. I’m sure I got the cray supercomputer speed wrong also, but the point still stands and is pretty unbelievable!
that's fp16. when it's based on FP32, M4 max(32c) is 13.64~14 tflops for sure, and M1 Max is 10 tflops.
these 3d software and editing tools usually rely on fp32 computing.
