So glad to know you are safe. I'm on Maui and thankfully I live in an area where no fires are happening but I (like so many here) have been massively mobilized into our island-wide community response efforts. I needed to give my brain a rest and was so happy to tune into your story for a while this Sunday as part of recharging my batteries this afternoon.

@@aniawood We are grateful you are safe too. That's amazing that we were able to give you a little mental escape from the tragic situation on the island. It's amazing how community comes together after such events. The hurricane we experienced last fall sure did. We commend you efforts to help and aid those in need. 😍💪💫 Strength be with you.

Hi you two! As someone who only two days ago had to pack for evacuation because of the fires in Maui I have first hand knowledge of the need to be as ready to go as possible. Imagining you having to do a 6 point (or more) turn in heat, fire, smoke (potentially) makes me suggest with all the love and urgency I have, to point the front of your camper in the direction of OUT! Wishing you every excellent thing!! Your channel is a welcome reprieve, a happy distraction in this time of unspeakable horror and loss here in Maui. I'm one of few that have power and am under a safe roof.

Because it is a front wheel drive van, it should be backed up the hill, as the weight transfer to the front wheels will give them better traction.
If a fire comes, the van WILL be a writeoff. You hop in the truck, and drive like the devil is after you, that wont be far from the truth, winds accelerate in valleys. Look up the Lyton BC fire, in Canada, two years ago.
Save yourselves, everything else can be replaced.
Best wishes from smokey Northern Canada.

If your camper is front wheel drive then you get much more traction if you reverse it up the hill, you should be able to back into your current park, then drive out from there.
Edit: reverse is your strongest gear, the weight gets thrown back towards your driven wheels if reversing, front drive is notoriously bad on hills because the weight is taken off them if going forward.

    Just a small Tip,,,,,,
.... as you go up hill, the front of the van gets lighter and because the van is front traction, you ended up spining your weels ,,, Howevr,,,, If you drive up hill in reverse, most of the weight comes to the front , and by doing it you achieve great grip .

Good job getting camper up the hill. Letting about half the air out of the drive wheel tires (front) will likely make driving up the slope way less dramatic. Another genius hack is to back up the hill utilizing the lower reverse gear and better weight distribution to pop up out of the hole without spinning the tires. Good job guys.

When raking gravel level, I turn my rake over. Teeth side up. Works pretty well for spreading and leveling.
It looks great! Such an amazing transformation!

  • @rolandtb3
    @rolandtb3 ปีที่แล้ว

1 Change camper tires. Get some off-road ones. Hopefully bigger and more knoby or deeper grooves for better traction.
2 For the vertical grade down and back up, add a grooved concrete pad from top to bottom. It could be the entire width and length. Or (2) grooved lanes double or triple the tire width for the full length. Something for knoby to grab on for those wet days. These concrete pads can be done in phases with poured concrete.
3 Try inexpensively with mixed sized compacted gravel. Then ashphalt the top surface. Making 5ft long grooves across the width on the ashphalt every 10 to 15 ft.
4 My concern would be dust, shade and ease of accessibility to escape in an emergency or breakdown. Another vehicle and tow strap for a getaway when you are already in panic/emergency/escape mode.

Awesome plans, I believe after moving your camper and building the shade camper cover, you will like it better at the new parking spot, closer to your little cool swimming pond too.
Poor things having to rake all that gravel. Your gravel delivery guy could help you out a little more as he pours out the gravel, next project ask him to roll as he lifts the dump truck bed & pour out a shallow level of gravel down each side of your road instead of just in the middle. Gravel guys here in America know how to do that to help out not having to rake so much. Good thing you both are still young & stong🏋️‍♂️

Yes, it's a lovely camping spot next to the lagoon. We did have him roll n spread several times but there was an issue with the weight and balance of the truck on one of the deliveries and we just had to drop it all. Just a little added workout 💪

For your consideration: you should park the camper facing out. When there is fire often the smoke is so thick it is impossible to back up. In Oregon they recommend that as a part of fire planning park facing the exit. We learned prepare for fire season in all our decision making. As long as the side of the camper isn’t facing the wind it should be safe enough.

So exciting to see this great progress. For weed control you may find you'll need a thick layer of mulch. PLEASE remember though, mulch is FLAMMABLE and wherever you spread it, you're working against the clearing you've done around the Water Mill. Please be careful and thoughtful where you spread it. :) And Brittany, so proud of you for trying new things. Keep trying, keep succeeding, keep going. What if something happened and Drew couldn't drive, tow or whatever, and his well being was in your hands? I know you would want to be able to do whatever you had to. And you CAN!

Mike and I have known each other for 51 years and will be celebrating our 49th anniversary September 20th. We are two halves of a whole and make such a great team accomplishing everything in our lives. That has helped us so much with our health challenges in life, too. None of us ever knows what is ahead for us. But, together, we have managed to handle our life + death struggles together, which works for us. Stay safe from any wildfires. We've been watching the results of that monsterous firestorm in Maui, and I immediately thought about you both with my worried heart. I worry about the dryness we have been experiencing here in Florida and get so scared about the fire danger. I had to deal with a terrible housefire when I was 17 years old. Just 2 thoughts- if it isn’t too late: 1) putting the white gravel under/ over the pipe as a guide of where Not to drive. The 2nd thought is about the mulch. We live in FL and mulch dries out fast here. Just wondering how safe that would be in a fire. You seem to have a lot of wind at times. In Italy Luca and Sara said they have to bury mulch/compost in the ground. However, I don’t know how you keep your dirt in place otherwise. I imagine your neighbors might know the answer, and I would love to hear it also.
Love how careful and cautious you are being with your land. Like you though, I can’t wait until you can start working on the mill. 😊 Be safe and don’t overheat!

For laundry, get a plunger. My grandmother used to do her laundry in the bathtub with a plunger. It worked great!

hi guys, they sell this waterproof terracotta paint that you could use to paint the roof if all else fails, its usually red, so wouldnt break the look much. ;)

Does it ever snow there? Guessing no but the way it tends to blow and drift is another factor for location choice in some places.
We can see it's hot there now! And wise choice wearing a single layer of thin cotton fabric loose for max breathability. I can't imagine not having full body airflow. But interestingly, lots of people seem to never catch on.

Try reversing your van up that steep incline. Always works for me in very steep inclines. The gear ratio is much lower.

    Hi guys!
Things are moving along well and looking good, and I hope that the fires are staying away.
Just a note on the use of the tow strap. It's less than ideal to use it on a tow ball and actually quite dangerous. You want to use it on appropriate tow points and never on the towball.
Continue with the good work and we look forward to watching the future videos. Stay safe!

I love that you stopped to dance in the rain. When I lived in southern China with three of my daughters there was no rain for our first 6 weeks. The skies eventually opened and it poured. My children ran outside to dance in the rain while all the other students and teachers stayed under shelters. Did I join them? Of course I did!
