    As an Aussie....And from experience.
1.ALWAYS have an escape route, multiple if you can.
    2. Have your vehicle pack and ready
    3.If in doubt...get out.
    4. DO NOT think you can stay and beat back the flames
    5. Fires do not discriminate

Mulberry trees should be pruned back pretty hard after fruiting. It encourages new healthy branches to grow, and it grows back fast. If you want more mulberry trees they propgate very easily. Just take one of those branches and stick it in the ground. You can also cut those branches smaller and start a compost pile instead of burning. Then, use the compost for your garden 😊 I'm glad to see you guys are doing well and taking extra steps to protect your new home.

So true. Those mulberries pop up all over the place here. They're basically a nuisance tree. I keep a handful for the birds but I cut lots of them out and many I cut back drastically but they shoot up overnight and they're really hard to eradicate.
Probably want to run those branches through the chipper before adding to the compost pile. And the thicker ones, cut to firewood length and let dry out for heating or the fire pit.

If it's any consolation, there was one house in the Maui fires that survived because!!! They cleaned around the house there was no plants bushes etc and their roof and the house was not made of wood. I'm sure if you googled it the loan survivor house in Maui you would get a full description. Pray to God it doesn't even come around your area😮

before you start cutting down all the eucalyptus trees, you should immediately start planting cork oaks, because they take a long time to grow, however they are excellent trees to resist fires.

    • @ginkodragon
      @ginkodragon ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes, eucalyptus trees are very flammable, and they are not native to Europe! They are planted because they are fast growing and a cheap source of lumber, but they contain volatile oils! So cut them down, but save the wood and the wood from any cut or trimmed tree, like that mulberry tree for firewood for the winter!

    • @MrBswede
      @MrBswede ปีที่แล้ว +2

I believe cork trees are protected in Portugal so if you plant them, be certain you want them where you plant them because you may not be able to cut them (I am not an expert on this but that's what I've heard).

For a fast moving and crowning fire, that is throwing spot fires ahead of it TRULY you will need to leave, and not wait for the last minute. They can grow a fire up to a mile in advance of the advancing fire line and they you be between two fires. Also, have various escape routes mapped out in advance, and where you plan to shelter as well. You routes can be cut off quickly. Drew it would be worth it for you to read studies of what happened in Paradise CA. I don’t think Brittany will want to.

Pleased don't under estimate how quickly fire can move & jump 40 foot wide breaks. My friends were in the Portuguese fires of not so long ago. They were lucky to escape in their car. The fire was leaping great expanses of road. Buildings can be rebuilt. A life cannot. Keep safe friends. Xxx

With the water from your stream I'd get a couple of 2000 +- liter tanks filled from your stream at all times. Then build an elevated sprinkler system using aluminum pipes to spray water around the perimeter of your dwelling. Needless to say use a diesel powered pump as it's a less volatile fuel. Over ambitious, perhaps. Cheap, no, but dual purpose, fire and if you want cooling etc as well. Crazy idea, perhaps, but sometimes they work.

FYI the only house in laihana that seemed to survive had river rocks all around their property. They think that helped save their house. Also replace all eucalyptus trees with oak and cork trees that are resistant to fire. Maybe you can create a moat around the house since you got a natural stream? Hope that helps,

Hi Brittany and Drew, love your vlogs, not wanting to sound like a teacher, northern European trained chainsaw operator. When you start your chainsaw always rev engine to full revs and test chain brake, not common practice in Portugal. The chain brake principal if while cutting the chainsaw kicks back will lift your arms while holding the chain up near your head, the chain brake will naturally be triggered to brake chain before hitting your head. Don't use chainsaw cutting a over your waist. Have chain brake on while walking around with engine running, and get yourself forestry helmet with visor and ear defenders. Hugs Jason

Hi Brittany & Drew. Glad to see all turned out well. If you are looking for a resource on bushfire, I can recommend ' The Complete Australian Bushfire Book ' by Joan Webster, or any of her other books. This was researched and written after the devastating bushfire here on Ash Wednesday, 1983, which spread thru our Eucalypt forests and towns, killing 75 people and destroy thousands of homes. It covers not only fire actions, but also what can be done to prepare for future events. From building design, landscaping, plant selection, equipment, clothing, planning for the day. And would not be just for the Australian environment. All the best with your adventures, and looking forward to seeing what lies ahead. Cheers.

It lights easily when dried out and burns hot, but fast. Kinda low on the energy per unit volume. I save it and burn it. It's weak compared to oak, ash, cherry, walnut but a little more energy dense than pine. For cooking I use grape vine; I've also used apple to good result.

    Yay for the Bombeiros!!
My husband is not allergic to bees either but he got stung on his face next to his nose and we watched over a couple days as his face swelled on both sides. The swelling gradually moved downward. (He did go to the ER/ED and was treated) As the swelling went down on his face, his neck swelled like a bag of fluid! He never had issues with his breathing or swallowing, (he did get antihistamines at the ER/ED) and we had a good chuckle about his appearance! Luckily he didn't need to use the camera for his remote work meetings, LOL! Seriously, though, if you have issues with wasps/etc that make those large round nests, make a faux nest with a stuffed paper bag and hang it in the area. They think other wasps are living there. It kept those wasps away from the front and back of our home!

    Be bushfire ready.
You're doing great. You're thinking seriously about things.
In Western Australia, by law we have to make a 12ft wide property boundary cleared path. Called a "Firebreak". It helps stop fires from speeding along the ground and tall trees are trimmed to help prevent the embers, which you've just heard can travel in the wind and start other fires.
Bush fires are very common every summer and can become deadly so quickly and a few things, including a Firebreak around your property, can help you:
*You NEED a bushfire escape plan. Includes a pack with torch, battery, water etc. *Know where you can get out of your property quickly.
*Don't move machinery, including cars, across crops or ground as the heat from the vehicle can ignite grass.
*And NEVER use tools which create sparks ie angle grinders. Many bushfires have been started with these.
Portugal and Australia are so alike and the fact that Portugal has eucalyptus trees, it makes for a very dangerous summer.
    Know the risks.
    Do the homework
Have a bushfire escape plan ready every season
    No vehicle movement across grasses
    No tools that spark.
Trim tall grass around the home.
The rooftop sprinkler system is something alot of homes in Australia have. They work great if installed correctly.

Word of advice from Australia, DON'T LEAVE IT TOO LATE TO EVACUATE!
    You can't outrun a wildfire.
The heat will hit you way before the flames arrive.

Luckily this particular tree next to the house carriers lots of water and fruits so it’s a good tree to be there that won’t let fire jump. The idea of cutting it is that it won’t allow the flames to be constant against the house if it is hot enough to burn. 🤞

    • @MarizaRodrigues-mw4bn
      @MarizaRodrigues-mw4bn ปีที่แล้ว

@@Mrandmrsadventure In a major fire, all trees get scorched in minutes before the flames reach them and they catch fire too. The thicker branches may take a little longer to burn, but eventually they do burn. Don't delude yourselves.
In 2017 in Pedrogao Grande they found several dead people next to a wall where they had sheltered, and the fire hadn't even got to that particular spot. The high temperaure and smoke killed them, not the flames.

Really glad that all turned out well for you. Stay safe.
Regarding fire resilience, take a look at what “Project Kamp” is doing. They are a group of people trying to find out the best way to live sustainably in Portugal.
One of the most important things they do is get rid of mimosas and save all of the native trees. Every single sprout of native trees.

I’m looking at your video and see its exactly the same situation as what we experience each year in central Chile. Eucalyptus are also planted everywhere here and the oily substance is what fire loves. We are told here to keep trees at 30 meters minimum from our houses as its not only the tree you should be afraid of but the burning ashes that flies with the wind and could hit the house. We also have two special hoses attached to our well dedicated to fire season and ready to go within a minute as we open the valves and get them going. Also, we’ve got bags filled with clothes, portable radio, computers, passports, flashlight, masks, etc we may need to grab quickly should an evacuation be called. There is no time getting things ready when a fire is right there…we know, we’ve lived it. Your adrenaline kicks in but one needs to be prepared. If nothing happens and it’s only a scare, then great but if you need to evacuate within 20 minutes or less, your ready to do so. Sorry this is happening around you guys too. You’re doing a great job preparing the land in case it happens. Removing all eucalyptus or most of them is a great idea however you’ll need to replace them with native trees. Also, know that if you do not remove the stump of an eucalyptus tree, even when fires have devastated the area and the tree has completely burned down, eucalyptus stumps will thrive on the ashes and I am not kidding… within 3-4 months it will grow branches about 4-5 feet high! Hoping you stay safe guys. You are right about the bomberons….they risk their lives. Stay safe!

I noticed here in the states our electrical company has a saw that is on a long pole and is electrical runs off of the battery and it saws branches that are hard to reach from the ground. That might work better than being on a ladder with a chainsaw!

Our hearts are with you... we're doing the same thing here in BC Canada, fire proofing our property and hoping against all hope that this isn't the year our little gulf island burns down. There is evidence of a wildfire still on our land from the 1930's, so we know it's a possibility... Stay strong!

We must always pray for people on the front lines and for the people that support them! Always so much to do! Firefighters, police, paramedics, rescue people with animals, doctors, nurses, volunteers. People with knowledge able to help out! We must all be prepared to help in any way we can. …feed people, a place to rest, money to buy food and supplies and pray, pray, pray! Stay safe guys! …and get rid of the rest of those eucalyptus trees. Plant safer trees. Use sails etc…for shade. Stay strong! ❤️🙏🏼🥰😎👋🏻🇨🇦

Not to preach, but, "Stay & Defend," is the way to go! "Indian (backpack) fire pump," is worth looking into! Maybe 4-5 filled up with water (5-8 gallons depending on model) strategically placed around the property is a great idea for the future.

I live in BC and right now we are living with smoke from all the fires. We had bought a wasp fire sprinkler system for our roof that we will use to dampen the roof and all around the house .
We have all our important papers stashed in one place and we went around taking pics of everything. Our mountain that we live on has mostly deciduous trees which acts as a fire break. You can find lists of trees online that are better in fires. I hate to say but eucalyptus are the worst. Good luck to you!

You actually can buy does roof tiles made of glass, you would eliminate the leak once and for all.

    Hi,
If you plan to heat your future home with a wood burning stove, then I would recommend not burning the mulberry tree trimmings but rather processing them into firewood.
    Good luck

For safety sake, never drop start a chainsaw, always put it on the ground with your toes through the handle. When starting a saw theres a small chance of a kickback, if you are drop starting it and it kicks back, it will invariably hit you in the face with the chain. Chainsaws require a lot of respect, get training and get the correct PPE or you may live to regret it.

Guys, You could make a deeper longer dam for the next fire season, Deeper to lower the evaporation. Think about more landscaping at the same time. I believe grapes grow well there too and many other fruit trees. Design your water runoff to go back into your dam, you will need a natural plant type filtration system, and no chemicals, they will harm your frogs etc. You know permaculture principles. Fantastic, love your adventures. Oh almost forgot the Bambi Buckets are about 2m round (minimum).

When you eventually get around to adding a new roof, make sure you include gutters and downpipes which lead to rainwater tanks. That way you could also add a sprinkler system on the roof and pump which will provide you with added protection during the fire season. Don’t use plastic pipes as they can melt.

Usually fighting 1 big fire is doable but while this one was raging there was another in central Portugal and the 2 came right after another fire in Sintra so that was a crazy week but now it has been "calmer".
You guys having such good water source need to find even more ways to store it maybe even run *LEVADAS* like they have in Madeira island
