I always appreciated that about his drumming.
I will say, it feels odd to hear him playing in live shows all the way back to the mid 90s... It's like he doesn't hit his hi-hat every second time, like you can tell he is but it's not a consistent volume like I think it should be for the songs he's playing. It gets buried in the mix.
It goes back to his weight dymanics thing, I think he might be overdoing it on the hi-hats, but that's just a small nitpick I suppose.

#1 for younger folks. This was 1985. Lars was not the only thrash drummer but this was a very new style of playing and compared to other drummers at the time - he had style and you could tell it was him.
#2 what we all can and cannot do (or want do not want to) do in our 40's and 50's physically should not diminish what we did in our 20's. I don't see people going "Joe Montana WAS good but he SUCKS now".
#3 For a band that was playing this style of music where precision was important - it probably would not really sound right if there were not human elements - imperfections. Doesn't anyone understand this at this point? Other drummers were and are more precise - which is a credit to them. There are some great Beatles records with lots of human error that make the music more real though for example. I think Lars gets beat up pretty much for one reason - his personality.

Omfg... There's a HUGE difference in style between Iron Maiden and Metallica. Iron Maiden has simple drum beats and Nicko doesn't even use double bass whereas Lars often uses double bass and complex (well, more than Iron Maiden) beats... Comparing walking to running... of course Nicko would have less problems... Sure Lars should keep practicing to be on point, but Nicko would be wrecked if he tried to play what Lars plays

This is an energetic line of great ideas, and Lars' approach to the song is very musical. As a drummer through decades, I've heard drummers able to hit every 32nd beat on every subdivision, yet sounding stale, not showing creativity or liveliness. I never cared about well-trained drummers capable of sounding like they've been quantized in Protools. Add to this that Lars' performance wasn't edited, unlike many modern players whose beats are being mixed around, best bits and sounds copy/pasted etc. If the zest and musicality is present, I'm willing to enjoy a 99.9% hit/miss ratio performance!

We found this funk bassist and then this singer wasinto the CHilli Peppers rap style.

Reynaldo Figueroa I'm not denying that, but it gets me very angry when people say he was never good. He wasn't born with any natural talent, he had to work hard to play this well. When I listen to Disposable Heroes, the drumming is the work of a true genius. There is no doubt his skills have definitely diminished and his live playing has never been that good but this is the work of a hard working drummer and he deserves respect.

I think that he has his own way of groove, very different and the same moment very close to Bonzo. Complicated to explain, it kind of attitude and pressure he put and his ignoring of metronome. He purpose don't cares to be clean, he cares about energy and pulsating as his main goal.

Those people are mostly complaining about his present-day sloppy and somewhat lazy style. He had much more passion for drumming during the first half of the 80s, but some people think that it's hip to rip on Lars and pretend like he is "the worst drummer EV4R!!1", because they need to hate something.

Jealousy is not automatically the basis for critique. You don't have to be a chef to know what shit food is. Yet there are so many here that think you have to be a drummer to know what you are talking about, most of you who say stuff like "prove it otherwise shutup!" are probably not drummers either. The drumming to Battery is awesome and it fits the song perfectly, but it doesn't require any special amount of stamina (none with good technique) and it doesn't require cocaine! I'm a death metal drummer and this is basic metal drumming that any metal drummer with enough practice can achieve within a pretty short amount of time. Btw, I love Lars and he's the sole reason I got into drumming in the first place. Stuff like Gavin Harrison tends to play, that's hard!

I’m not on the “Lars sucks” bandwagon and would never be. Metallica wouldn’t and couldn’t exist without him. But at this point in time, he was on his way to becoming a really, really solid metal drummer. You look at footage from the puppets tour and he was DESTROYING it every night. It was only after the Bob Rock influence started that he dialed it back and started laying down a lot of backbeats. I’m convinced that’s a big part of the reason that this side of his playing started to suffer as the 90s progressed. If you don’t practice and develop this stuff, you can lose your consistency pretty easily...as any musician knows.

Lars may not be the most skilled drummer out there, but he’s got a distinctive style that is instantly recognisable that works with the style of music he plays and that is what makes him a legendary drummer.
Then again, the bass drum work on this particular tune is pretty insane!
Keith Moon wasn’t that great of a drummer either, but his style worked for the music he played. I mention him because his style is reminiscent of Lars somewhat. Sloppy, but in a good way, also very natural and musical.
