The real Hannibal was a Carthaginian general that attempted to attack Rome, unfortunately for him much of his army died trying to cross over the mountains.

I definately think you should watch the other movies. You'll really enjoy them too...
The "Hannibal Lecter" movies:
• "Manhunter" (1986) - Not too bad. Good to watch if you're going to get into the series. No Anthony Hopkins though.
• "The Silence Of The Lambs" (1991) -
• "Hannibal" (2001) - Not too bad. Though not that great either. Storyline makes no sense.
• "Red Dragon" (2002) - A crap movie. Legit. The worst of the series.
• "Hannibal Rising" (2007) - Never watched it. "Red Dragon" was so horrible, on top of "Hannibal" being sub-par, that it made no sense to give "Hannibal Rising" a chance. However, those I know who have seen it said it blows.
They simply tried to milk the story too much in too short a timeframe, between 2001 and 2007 that is.
Manhunter from 1986 was first movie with Hannibal Lecter played by Brian Cox , William Petersen from CSI as FBI agent and Tom Noonan as main villain .
Red Dragon 2002 , is remake , lot of same dialogue and plot line , Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter , Edward Norton as FBI agent and Ralph Fiennes as main villain.
Manhunter , William Petersen , was better in his role than Red Dragon , Edward Norton , both playing same character , Will Graham , FBI profiler .
Both Tom Noonan and Ralph Fiennes do mean main villain role as , Francis Dolarhyde , The Tooth Fairy.
"I'm having an old friend for dinner" is one of my all time favorite lines, and Anthony Hopkins delivers it so well.

At 3:03, "how do they capture him?" DAWN, you need to watch the third movie of the trilogy, RED DRAGON (2002) which is technically a prequel to The Silence of The Lambs.
"She's got something down her throat". Starling noticed that the tounge hadn't receded into the back of the throat even though she was on her back. Ergo, she realized that something was in the way.
The more reactions I've seen to this movie, I've come to realize that Hannibal tells Clarise where to find Buffalo Bill from their first meeting. You didn't show the particular scene, but when Clarise asks about Hannibal's sketches, he says that he drew "the Duomo viewed from the Belvedere," which is where the first victim and where Bill is, in Belvedere, Ohio.
I hope you understand that The Belvedere and The Duomo are not in Belvedere, OH.

@freespeechchampsusanwojcic2528 ok. Just because he said "Belvedere" in no way tells Clarice where Bill is. You're reaching for straws... brush. So go on and pinch your nose all you want. Shake your head and sigh. It was still a dumb reach for a clue.
As others would say, Hannibal (2001) was a direct sequel to this film. Then Red Dragon (2002) was a prequel. However, Red Dragon was also made back in the 1980's as Manhunter (1986), also worth a watch as it's another take on the Red Dragon book. This film also won the Big-5 at the Oscars: Best Film, Best Director (Demme), Best Actor (Hopkins), Best Actress (Foster), and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hopkins also had the least time on screen (10-12 minutes or so?) for any Best Actor, ever. Such an amazing performance.
I think Manhunter is criminally overlooked. Maybe not a masterpiece, but I think better than the later sequels (definitely much more interesting than them).
I would definitely list MANHUNTER or HANNIBAL as next watches. In HANNIBAL, you'll receive further education in the history of disembowelments, and especially with one Italian family. HANNIBAL also 'serves' as a reminder that, in many of the world's finest restaurants, the chef will prepare some dishes at table-side. They claim the freshness is to die for.
In MANHUNTER, we're offered a fantastically powerful set of characters, five years before SILENCE, and you'll gain some understanding of "Hannibal inside your head" comments. Those are, uh, fleshed out in the remake RED DRAGON.
They're ALL worth seeing. None of them are as good (arguably "Manhunter" is but in an entirely different way) but even Ratner's version of Red Dragon has that amazing cast and still tells the story well.
I actually loved "Manhunter", though a lot of people didn't. It's worth a watch.

Some celebrity fluff garbage tv show was doing a piece on asking movie celebs what their Halloween costume was going to be that year. WHen they asked Anthony Hopkins, he looked straight at the camera and said; "Ever since Silence of the Lambs I don't NEED a Halloween costume!"

Sir Anthony Hopkins is a legend! Born in the same village as Richard Burton, he has been a movie star since the late 1960s. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1977 for his brilliant performance in the movie 'Magic', about a disturbed ventriloquist and well worth watching. He has been in dozens of films, too many to mention!
Not precisely the same village, but close enough. Burton was from Pontrhydyfen and Hopkins is from Margam, but they're only a few miles apart. And I agree - Magic is a great movie!
Hopkins is an exceptional actor, I hope you'll catch a few more of his movies. BTW, you crack me up. Welcome to the dark side!
Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster are both award-winning actors who have been around for decades. Both have a long list of amazing performances to their credt.
All of these movies reference back to a real-life killer from the '50s called Ed Gein. Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Silence of the Lambs, a lot of other films get inspiration from this true-life wacko. Include heavy metal bands like Slayer as well, they also have at least one song inspired by Ed Gein.

The ending is perfect. How Hannibal blends so easily into a crowd. Everyone appears to be normal but you never know what the person next to you in a crowd has done or what they are capable of. Absolutely chilling.
THIS! Monsters are real. But they always look human.
Silence of the Lambs came out on Valentines Day, of all things. The Academy remembered it all year and awarded it the top five Oscars: Best Actor, best actress, best screenplay, best director and best picture. Only two other movies have ever done that before - One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and It Happened One Night (1934) which I’ve recommended for you to watch. Still really good!

The one you absolutely need to watch is Manhunter. It came out in 1986 and is the first adaptation of Red Dragon. It's a must watch! It was directed by Michael Mann, the same person who directed Heat.
Totally agree... Brian Cox was really good as Dr. Lecter and Tom Noonan ROCKED as Mr. Dollarhyde..
I hated that movie because the soundtrack was so overbearing and Michael Mann's direction was so heavy handed that I couldn't even follow the story. It doesn't even come close to the brilliance of this movie.
No, see Red Dragon instead. Manhunter is too outdated and Red Dragon doesn’t make the mistakes Manhunter does.
Manhunter was great, but SUPER 80s. Very stylized- kinda gave off Miami Vice vibes, a little (the only Michael Mann directed film I've seen that wasn't stylized was Last of the Mohicans). Brian Cox and Tom Noonan made that movie.

Here are 3 movies where Anthony Hopkins plays a good character. These are all excellent movies worthy of your attention.
The Elephant Man - Young AH as a doctor.
84 Charing Cross Road - Middle aged AH as a bookshop proprietor.
The World's Fastest Indian - Older AH races motorcycles.
There's a shot of Anthony Hopkins in "The Elephant Man" that just slays me every time, although, it's not a movie I can watch a lot even though it's one of my all-time favorites and John Hurt is just amazing in it, as well. Anthony Hopkins is also great in, well, everything, really, but some of my other favorites are "The Bounty" with Mel Gibson and "The Father" which came out in 2020, also with the amazing Olivia Colman. It's the film he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for in 2021, beating out Chadwick Boseman from "Black Panther" who everyone thought was going to win, but Sir Anthony really deserved it. It's a heartbreaking performance and a fantastic film. Also, "Magic" from the mid-70's is one of his great films, and also "Remains of the Day" with Emma Thompson. He's one of the greatest actors of his generation, no question.

Buffalo Bill was based on the Actual story of Ed Gein. He was a Cannibal that made trophies of hid Victims. He used their Skulls as Soup Bowls and even made/wore a Female "skin suit" out of victims. The Police had been looking for a missing bartendress when they went to the house of the "town Kook"... They found the Women in a barn, strung up by her ankles, Missing her head and split open from below the belly button to the top of her sternum.
Ed's Story was the inspiration for "Psycho", "the Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and the Characters for "Silence".

Anthony Hopkins's first film was _The Lion in Winter_ (1968). One of the finest Medieval dramas it stars Peter O'Toole as Henry II and Katherine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine (her third Best Actress Oscar). Hopkins plays their son, Richard Lionheart. Nominated for seven Oscars it won three: Best Actress; Best Adapted Screenplay - James Goldman; Best Original Score - John Barry. It also won BAFTAs for Hepburn and Barry.
This is one you'll certainly enjoy and you should put on your list.

@@simonfrederiksen104 FWIW,_The Lion in Winter_ is an excellent film: great script by James Goldman, great performances all around. However _Lawrence of Arabia_ is more than just an excellent film; it is a cinematic masterpiece and regularly ranked among the world's greatest films. So it's no surprise that there have been reactions to in on the tubes of you.
Anthony Hopkins' best performance was in "The Elephant Man." You should definitely watch that.

Loved your outro. Especially acknowledging Clarice's trauma with the lambs. I've heard other reactors (especially young ones) say "What's the big deal?" Context, people. She's TEN, recently orphaned & living in a strange new place. Then Dawn confirms for us that the sound of ONE lamb screaming is "horrendous", like a child's voice, as Clarice says. Imagine dozens screaming all at once. There'd be something seriously amiss with her NOT to be traumatized

Also she tried her best to save at least one lamb. So later in life she became a cop(FBI)....to try and save more lives.

@@louismarzullo1190 Yes. He initially tries to test her character by trying to break her down about her upbringing when they first met. Only to realize she is very principled in who she is in life and what she does. And for that he respects her.
The actress in question is Jodie Foster. Her career started in 1969 and is still going strong. She's always been very active, starring in a number of Disney films in the early 70s, then played an underage prostitute in Taxi Driver (1976) and then went right back to making films at Disney, my favorites being the original Freaky Friday (1977), which Disney has since remade twice, and Candleshoe (1977). In 1991 she played an adult prostitute in Woody Allen's Shadows and Fog. She is also a Producer and Director. For example she Directed episodes of the horror anthology series Tales from the Darkside.
The head in the jar could be well preserved for decades in formaldehyde. If it was Hannibal who put it in the jar he'd definitely know how.
The lights didn't 'come on' when Starling shot Bill; if you go back and watch carefully, you'll see that one of her stray gunshots knocked off a board or something that was covering the window, letting sunlight into the room.
And ending the darkness that Buffalo Bill brings, both literally and symbolically!
"Does he want to build a cocoon, get in it & turn into a butterfly?" That's... bloody brilliant! I can see Bill thinking about it, so tormented wishing it were possible. But it wouldn't satisfy his murderous rage due to the abuse he suffered as a child. Still a great image, Dawn
Of the *many* reactions to this movie that I've seen, this was the most amusing because Dawn got the concepts, got some major twists, and was rooting for Dr. Chilton's exit via entree, hahah!
My wife had been in Canada and was due home (UK) shortly after midnight. I watched this while I was waiting up - bad move. Afterwards I watched another film. Then I cleaned the house. At some point (maybe 1:30AM?) I phoned the airport, and they had no knowledge of a flight arriving when she'd said. Eventually I managed to find a number for the place she'd been staying and called them, discovering that she had subtracted the time difference instead of adding it, and wasn't due back for ages! I then completely failed to go to sleep. Not my best night ever, but a great movie...

Hey Dawn! Hannibal is (was) a renowned forensic psychiatrist, M.D. And yes, the other 2 films are definitely worth watching. Red Dragon, especially, if you want to know how he was caught😉 "Hannibal" is almost a horror-comedy. The light at the end was from the shots blasting out a window. Jodie Foster is Clarice. 2-time Oscar winner. Wait until you see her in "Taxi Driver". When you said he wants to turn into a butterfly, you pretty much got it. In the book, the last thing he says to Clarice before he dies is "What's it like to be beautiful?". They left it out of the movie because they didn't want the audience to feel any sympathy for him. I would've left it in🦋

The prequel to this movie "Red Dragon" which also stars Hopkins as Hannibal, is a very good film and goes into more details as to how Lecter was apprehended.
If you get a chance read Red Dragon, and watch the original Red Dragon, in my opinion it is so much better than the remake.
"Oh, there's the doctor... EAT HIM!" is typical Dawn-reaction comment that makes her content so fun (& relatable!!!).
Spring lamb slaughter IS horrible to hear, but the in-reaction comment was something like, "Is that it?" 🤔Clearly Dawn has lived in a rural or even farm environment.
And, the ongoing theories are so funny (& often accurate!!!). Yes, we are all rooting for HannibalTheCannibal!
Anthony Hopkins has been in countless films and won countless awards for his acting. One particular movie that's a touching tragic love story, in which Anthony has the main role is "The Remains Of The Day". The character he plays couldn't be more amazingly different from Hannibal, and many villain roles Anthony has portrayed in his career ... yet he is just as thought provoking...leaving you obsessing over what makes his character tick and he becomes a true haunting mystery. Even if you never watch "The Remains Of The Day" on your channel, it's a perfect film to watch by the fire on a cold rainy day.
The next one is called “Hannibal “ and is very very good. He’s living in Florence Italy and is tracked down by the FBI with a local Italian police detective.

Anthony Hopkins is an excellent actor, he's played many different parts over the years, he was a boss in a Mission Impossible film, he played Odin in the Marvel Thor films just to name a couple of roles.
The Fastest Indian is another great one.
Based on a true story of a New Zealander Burt Munro who set a land speed record on a 1920 Indian Scout Motorcycle. The record set in 1967 to my knowledge still stands.
@@GaryLBlakeleyYes, 'The world's Fastest Indian' is an excellent film with Sir Anthony Hopkins in, I knew that it was based off a true story but I didn't know that it was a New Zealander.
Those are the two weirdest pulls for Hopkins roles.
Hopkins also played Captain Bligh in the 1984 film “The Bounty” with Mel Gibson (with smaller supporting roles, played by Laurence Olivier, Daniel Day Lewis, and Liam Neeson).

If you can't imagine him in another role, you need to watch "The World's Fastest Indian". The contrast between his character in this movie and that one is all you need to truly understand what a brilliant actor Anthony Hopkins is.
I beg to differ, the strongest contrast with HL is Hopkin's role as the doctor in David Lynch's "The Elephant Man", also "Remains of the Day".
(Disclaimer: I apologize in advance regarding the length and snotty tone of the following reply, but I am feeling both bored and ornery today).
I fail to understand how you can "beg to differ" with something I didn't even say. I did not claim that his portrayal of Burt Munro in The World's Fastest Indian was the "strongest contrast" to his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter, I simply pointed out that you could understand how great Anthony Hopkins is just by watching those two movies. That being said however, I have to wonder if you've ever watched The World's Fastest Indian, because it clearly is.
Consider the following...
Hannibal Lecter, Dr. Treves (The Elephant Man), and Mr.Stevens (The Remains of the Day)...three characters, one evil, two non-evil: All three characters have many similarities and things in common.
All three are highly educated Englishmen with sophisticated tastes in art, music, and cuisine (disregarding meals featuring human based main courses, obviously). All three, evil and non-evil alike, place a great deal of importance on comporting themselves with manners and decorum. Despite the difference in their respective social classes, were these characters to live in the same time period, they could very easily find themselves interacting with one another on a daily basis. All three live in the "same world", so to speak. Frankly, other than one guy being a butler and one of the doctors being evil, that weren't all that different.
On the other hand....
Burt Munro: An eccentric, affable, decidedly non-evil working class bloke from New Zealand, who didn't exactly care about "sophisticated" things. A character who lived in a shed/workshop, and "mowed" his yard by dumping gasoline on it and setting it on fire. A character who placed a great deal of importance on making his motorcycle faster and pissing on his lemon tree everyday. A character about as polar opposite from a highly educated cannibalistic serial killer as you can get, they're not even on the same plane of existence.... biggest contrast ever!
And from now on, having someone for dinner takes a new meaning!
I love Detective Dawn's brain working overtime in these detective movies.
Anthony Hopkins' Lecter is easily one of the most unsettling characters ever.

Dawn Marie looks like a grown up Heather O'Rourke from the movie Poltergeist, love her.
Dancing with myself is another good song by Billy Idol. Catch my Fall, yet another good song. I'm glad you enjoyed this song.
Most women watching this movie is either disgusted and/or freaked out. But Dawn just smiles and laughs it off 🤣

Dawn’s laughter reminded me of “The Naked Gun”, when Frank and Jane are hysterically laughing after watching “Platoon”.
I love watching this movie and then following it with zorro. Hopkins just is such a brilliant actor its hard to believe it's the same actor playing a cannibal and than a wholesome mentor in a different movie 😂
29:08 Clarice was played by Jodie Foster. Jodie worked as a child actress: "Taxi Driver," "Freaky Friday" (1976- the 2003 remake with Lindsay Lohan came much later, obviously) "Candleshoe," etc. She grew up on screen more or less, went to college at Yale University, took on adult roles such as "Nell," "Contact," etc. She has done a lot of directing and producing work, as well as on screen roles. Super intelligent; I have tremendous respect for Jodie Foster.
Worst thing i ever heard about involving bodies.
I worked with a guy who cleaned up dead bodies, one of the worst for him was an old man who died in the bath and was there for weeks, when they went to pick him up his legs fell off, he described it like when meat falls off the bone.

I saw this opening night with a handful of fellow film students from Columbia and we all freaked. I remember we all piled into a bar next door and discussed what we liked most about it and pointed out the cinematic features we spotted.. Such a good time back then being young and surrounded by like-minded people who all shared the same passion for Cinema. We all knew instantly that it would be a huge hit and that Anthony Hopkins was a lock for best actor.

Anthony Hopkins has had many great staring roles, films with him to watch: The Lion in Winter, When Eight Bells Toll, The Remains of the Day, Legends of the Fall, Nixon, Amistad, The World's Fastest Indian. He also plays Odin in the MCU universe, which you have not reacted to yet, but maybe you saw them before becoming a reactor. If not then that is a rich vein for reacting.
i liked Magic, one of his earlier roles and just as creepy
The MCU is tediously formulaic, almost like a set of images repeatedly rubber stamped on the sheets of a roll of toilet paper.

It's always fun to watch Dawn's take on pretty much any movie. The best thing about her channel though is no matter how intense the movie, I'm still gonna get that laugh.
Dawn getting so into the process of preparing the skin for Bill's suit makes me think of "Archer" when Archer asks Krieger "What is it with serial killers and skin" and Krieger replies "I'm not a...SERIAL killer!" Then Archer says "Wait. Why did you emphasize 'serial'?"
I'm convinced Dawn is chaotic neutral and it's awesome.
The other Hannibal movies are fine. Nowhere near as good as this one though.
My favorite Anthony Hopkins movie is The World's Fastest Indian. His character in that movie is completely different than his character in this movie.
Such an overlooked and underrated film. I love the tone of it and how his character is so open to everyone. Time to pee on the lemon tree!

Hopkins is also wonderful in "The Elephant Man" and as Van Helsing in "Bram Stroker's Dracula." Jodie Foster also plays a role in the classic "Taxi Driver" where she speaks the infamous line "if you love me you'll shoot the president." Five years later, a madman named John Hinckley Jr., who was obsessed with Jody Foster, actually did shoot President Reagan.
That was a really enjoyable reaction and a very good summary afterward. The sequel is called "Hannibal" and still stars Anthony Hopkins - it's rubbished by most but I actually thought it was decent, and definitely worth a look if you're interested.
The movie's downfall is that Dr. Lecter is just less interesting when he's running about and you see his crimes.
Example:
In Silence of the Lambs Dr. Chilton shows Clarice a photograph of what Hannibal did to an orderly. It is not shown to the audience and the reason for that is nothing they could put on that photo could match the imagination of the audience picturing the horror.
In Hannibal, he lobotomizes a man while he is a wake and feeds him his own brain. It's gross, but it isn't scary. It almost borders on being funny.

Another great perfomance of Anthony Hopkins you can see in "The Remains Of The Day" as a butler in a mansion. No scary vibes, no action but an excellent portrait of the service personal in England during around the 1930s and WW2. A very good movie and worth watching it.

Did you catch that Hannibal Lecter was controlling everyone else like puppets the entire movie? Jack Crawford dared to "play a game of mental chess" with Hannibal. Hannibal saw through it immediately.
Hannibal's goal was two-fold. 1) He wanted to leverage for his own escape. 2) he wanted to make certain Jack Crawford got no glory & made certain Clarice would get all the credit.
Hannibal fed everyone just enough information / misinformation to make things happen. He arranged for Crawford to go to the wrong house. He knew Crawford was using Clarice and would accidentally send her to the right house because she was doing Crawford's "thankless grunt work".
Hannibal knew there would be one of two outcomes for Clarice that would give her the glory. 1) She would win and capture / kill Buffalo Bill. - OR - 2) She would be killed by Bill. She would be celebrated with honors at her funeral for dying in the line of duty. Clarice would get the glory & Jack Crawford would be publicly disgraced for his failure.
When Crawford showed up to the wrong house, he yelled "Clarice!" That was the moment he realized Hannibal had been playing him the whole time & Clarice was at the right house.
PS: Hannibal said at the beginning of the movie that he planned to help Clarice's career. Also, during the part when Clarice lied to him about relocating to the beach island prison reward, Hannibal gave her the clue that he already knew she was lying. He said "Don't lie to me. I'll be able to tell."
Crawford did select the right person to deal with Lector. Otherwise, Lector probably wouldn't have bothered talking to anyone. It's a theme continued from Manhunter in that Crawford gives a supposedly "low risk" task but really knows he is putting them in harms way.
@@sheert Perhaps he did. Crawford's not dumb, and neither is Clarice. They were simply outmatched by a mad genius who was 12 steps ahead of everybody.
I don't think she lied. I'm pretty sure they kept her out of the loop so she would play her part honestly thinking it was a real offer. It is also why he never came after her imo; she never lied to him.
@@rigrmortis3393 Hannibal confronted Clarice. Then Clarice admitted to Hannibal that part of the lie reward was her idea. (I can't remember but I think her part was where he gets to walk on the beach and swim).
It was the scene when Hannibal was in the iron bar cage talking to Clarice - before Dr. Chilton "escorted / kicked" Clarice out.

Actually Hannibal Lector's first appearance on film was in a movie called "Man Hunter," he was in prison in that one too and helped a detective named Will Graham find a serial killer named The Tooth Fairy.
There's so many good Anthony Hopkins movies. He was President John Quincy Adams in Amistad, Capt Bligh in The Bounty, Dr. Treves in The Elephant Man, LTC Frost in A Bridge Too Far.

Until you mentioned it, I had NEVER given it any thought as to how Dr. Lecter managed to leave notes in Clarice’s copy of the case file, and now I feel stupid for not realizing he most likely used parts or all of the pen to do so.
Yes, it’s a strange revelation that somehow you find admiration for a depraved mad man. I saw this in cinema when it came out. I walked away from the lights of the marquee and into the dark night. I too was hit with that thought, “Why do I admire Hannibal?”
I came to realize that I admired that he was the quintessential villain. He was intelligent and cultured, but also savage and confident as the ultimate predator. It is a great lesson in what makes a captivating villain that has depth. Even though he kills, he isn’t random. He has his own motivation and goals that conflict with the protagonists goals. Great writing that translated to the movie quite well.

Some of his movies that you should see - Hearts in Atlantis (2001), The World's Fastest Indian (2005), Meet Joe Black (1998), The Mask of Zorro (1998), Amistad (1997), Legends of the Fall (1994), Amistad (1997, a smaller, but key, role, but very good), Hitchcock (2012, a movie about Alfred Hitchcock), Remains of the day (1993), Howard's End (1992), The Elephant Man, Red 2 (2013, of course you have to see Red first), The Bounty (1984), and The Father (2020). He is also Odin (Thor's father) in the Marvel movies, and Hannibal Lecter in the sequels to this movie (Hannibal and Red Dragon). He is also in several movie adaptations of Shakespeare's plays (Titus, King Lear, Othello, Hamlet). Actually, the first movie to feature Hannibal Lecter was called Manhunter in 1986. Starring Scottish actor Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter. And it was remade in 2002 under the name of the novel that it came from, Red Dragon.
