He was not wrong in his analysis of her. Her dad wasn’t a coal miner, but everything else was true. She had class issues with nice bag and cheap shoes. She was trying to appear and be more than her upbringing. The FBI is status. She’s crying at her car because he called her out, not because of the stuff thrown at her.
If I remember the book correctly, Lecter gives a killer's fake name not as "Louis Friend" (an anagram of "iron sulfide"), but as "Billy Rubin", after bilirubin - a chemical that, basically, gives excrements their color.
I don’t think Hannibal was wrong in his initial assessment of Clarice. I think he dragged her secret fear that she wasn’t good enough out into the light. The book gives more details on this.
I was just about to type this. I think he did get some of t right - maybe about trying to escape the small town life, one generation from poor white trash (I grew up in western PA and a lot of families were like that, etc).

Instead of just shooting her from the start, he creeps up right behind her and she hears the hammer click, and turns and shoots him. Yes, she is skilled, but it's because of Bill's playing around that she had the chance to turn the tables.
Hannibal dropped clues all through the movie. When he tells the senator that he loves her suit that’s a big clue as to what Buffalo Bill is doing to his victims.
the year it swept the Oscars, Billy Crystal was the host- to open the show, he had himself wheeled out in a straight jacket and face mask ala Hannibal Lector. The crowd roared.
This was hugely satisfying. How Joe can sit there and not spoil what's about to happen is astonishing. The Silence of the Lambs *ABSOLUTELY* deserves the praise it gets, it's a masterpiece. One of the best parts of this reaction is discovering half the video is the discussion!!! AWESOME. My two cents will be limited to the "coveted" part of the discussion - Hannibal tells Clarice that the randomness, isn't. It's to disguise that the *first* victim wasn't random - ONLY the first victim was "coveted". From there, the victims were opportunistic. LOVED your reactions Mike & Mikey ... looking forward to more.
So, Lecter did get a few things wrong in his first analysis with Starling. He wanted to see if she had enough courage and self-respect to stand up to him, and although she was frightened by him at this first encounter, she did. But as he got to know her, and BECAUSE she was honest, frank, and at times vulnerable around him (unlike everyone else who saw him only as a monster with no depth, to study and parade around, and who only wanted to use him), he began to respect her and recognize her potential. Their final scene together was a genuine therapy session. He was trying to help her heal from her trauma, and he wasn't going to spoon-feed her Buffalo Bill's name because he knew she would catch him and save her lamb (Catherine Martin). The only way to silence those lambs was to encourage her to face that fear again. The phone call at the end was basically a follow-up: "well Clarice, have the lambs stopped screaming"? Notice that the only time she genuinely smiles is at her graduation ceremony and the after party. She's even still smiling when she first picks up the phone. Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling forged a genuine connection, based on mutual respect.
I always thought that Hannibal Lecter made it to where only Clarice Starling would find the real killer and not Crawford, because she deserved the credit for actually doing the detective work and using her brain, when everybody else were dumb-dumbs and couldn't find Buffalo Bill for so long. I think it's his way of showing that he cares for her.

Just as an insight between now and then. Jodi Foster was probably a size, 6, or 4. Bill refers to Katherine as size 14, as “a big fat person”. 14 is probably an average size in the U.S. now, at Walmart it is a 0X, or 1X.
If you want happiness and laughter (and haven't already seen this series before), I highly recommend The Good Place. Fantastic show, well-planned writing, smart and so funny.
For a character who is only in the film for less than half an hour, Hannibal Lecter looms so large. Anthony Hopkins crushed it. Gotta say though, as perfect as this film is, I hope you all eventually do the Hannibal TV series. It’s its own kind of incredible and incredibly unsettling. Plus Laurence Fishburne!
Clarice Starling is a predecessor to Agent Dana Scully from The X-Files (and Jodie Foster even guest starred - voice only - in a very memorable episode).
If you pay close attention to the doorbell sound when Bill comes up from the basement compared to when the agent rings the bell, you can tell that the raid is happening at the wrong house.
Anthony Hopkins did amazing in this role, ready for an even more amazing fact? He was only on the screen for just over 16 minutes in this two hour film. This is a great example of impactful acting.
Enjoyed your reactions to this great movie. The scenes in the psych hospital b/w Lecter and Clarice really make the movie and the acting couldn't have been better. I remember first meeting Hannibal in the prequel book Red Dragon and recall how nerve-racking a read it was. The two movie versions of Red Dragon are good but not in the same class as one you just watched. I understand the Red Dragon story was retold during the 3rd season of the TV series Hannibal which I've only watched the first season of and probably should get back to watch the rest.
It's my understanding that blinding night vision users, by shining a bright light at them, is strictly a movie trope. Night vision goggles have bright-source protection that prevents this sort of thing. When, in the existence of night vision, was this feature introduced? Probably pretty close to the beginning (but I'm too lazy to look it up right now). After all, muzzle flash would be a real problem for a soldier trying to shoot at what he was watching with the night vision, without that kind of protection.

This movie always makes me feel a little insane myself. I hate and fear Lecter, but I find myself sorta rooting for him by the end. Or maybe admiring him is a better description. And then I think to myself, "Self, that is crazy people thinking." But I do admire how the film elicits such different viewer responses to two similarly gruesome killers.
In Hannibal's first scene, he's drawing a view from the Belvedere in Florence. Buffalo Bill lives in Belvedere, OH. Lecter was dropping clues from the get go.
I think myself that buffalo bill ‘knew’ the first victim through seeing. The friend said sewing was her life and he needed to be able to sew in order to make the suit, she may have been the one that taught him how to sew maybe …..
In their FIRST meeting Lechter tells Starling where Buffalo Bill lives, a spoiler you only realize in the LAST scene with Bill.- Belvedere. Very Rosebud-ish! Lechter reads her in the first meeting "I'll give you what you most want, ambition". Sterling is driven through the whole movie and all distractions, to get what she wants, the FBI job in Crawford's department, saving lambs.
Hopkins took lessons before filming in not blinking- making Lecter more menacing... the Clarice role was originally offered to Michelle Pfieffer- she had just done a film (Married to the Mob) with Silence director, Jonathan Demme and he wanted her to play it. She found it way to dark and turned it down- Jodie leapt at the chance.
Thomas Harris has said Hannibal was based on an actual killer doctor, Alfredo Ballí Treviño. In one of the books in the series, he talks extensively about Teviño. Norman Bates and Leatherface are based on Ed Gein.
I saw this at my college (they used to have Friday movie nights on campus). It unsettled me so much, I made my friends walk me to my car, lol. They thought I was a big baby. 🤣🤨 Hey, I didn't live on campus, so I would have been walking alone while they all walked together back to the dorms! I'm just trying to be smart. Safety in numbers. 😉

The filmmakers intentionally cast Jodie Foster against tall male actors, to emphasize her sense of being an outsider. I kind of wonder if they were intentionally making a point about how nobody really cared about the case enough to put a lot of intense effort into capturing the killer until he messed up and kidnapped somebody IMPORTANT.

The script writer actually stole that from Ted Bundy who used to walk around with a cast on his arm asking for help from women.

After this movie, procedural investigation TV shows became a thing.
There was a really cool short-lived procedural series called UnSub in 1989 which the later Criminal Minds basically ripped off.

Jodie Foster, while deserving of the award she won, swore off the sequel because she suffered from nightmares after making this film.
