Jerusalem Lights Parashat Shelach 5781: Rectifying the Sin of the Spies

  • Torah testifies that G-d chose the Land of Israel and cherishes it, sanctifying it for all time. But in this week’s Torah portion of parashat Shelach, ten of the twelve men who returned from spying out the land, slandered the Land of Israel, and delivered a baseless, negative report that plunged the nation into unprecedented crisis -- and set into motion a cycle of tragedy and destruction that left an indelible imprint on Jewish history. The poisonous slander against the Land of Israel that began with the sin of the spies, continues to this day. How do we understand this heinous sin against the land, and what is our role in stopping the cycle of slander against the Land of Israel?
    The portion of Shelach (Numbers 13 : 1 - 15 : 41) is read on Shabbat: Sivan 25, 5781/June 5, 2021

Toda rabah Rabbi! These are indeed challenging things in our days. I often wonder that when we have the desire so strongly to be in the Land, yet meet so many obstacles and barriers, then is it truly HaShem's desire for me, or just my own. The Torah tells me He wants me there. So why does it hurt so bad not to be able to get there. I want nothing more than to be there, but I need His help to do so; to remove these obstacles before my neshamah literally jumps out of my skin. May HaShem return us all SOON to the Land of Israel where we can receive direct light, direct inspiration, and not this clouded thing in exile. Oy veh! Soon HaShem, soon!

The 'bible', I have learned, is the christianized, poorly translated tenach. So whenever I refer to the Jewish Hebrew source text, I personally would rather use the word 'tenach' than 'bible'..

Since many of the projects for the Temple service were completed, the Rabbi began to want to devote more time to teaching Torah and so retired from the Temple Institute. It was a difficult decision but has proven to be the best choice ☺️
