Art Style in Boomer Shooters

- So here I talk about the other types of artstyles that can be explored within the boomer shooter scene, where it doesn't just have to be ps1 inspired, or look low poly so that it looks retro. I don't mind the ps1 aesthetic, but have a general preference for higher fidelity, 2000s centric games or games that are artistically appealing.
As for the model image, I meant to say faces rather than lines. The more faces a model has, the more detailed it ends up being. Forgot to show Roboquest and Battle Shapers, two great roguelite shooters with a similar look to Deadlink.

One thing I like is that you can also easily tell which game is which because of their unique art direction. Even a game like Sprawl, I could recognize it before you even brought up the name.
I'm working on my own FPS, and this is constantly on my mind. I'm planning on using sprites for enemies, items, players, and some decorations, pretty much like DOOM, but also medium detail 3D models, like Metroid Prime, for the world. I need to be able to make half-pipes due to the movement mechanics, you see.
The one thing these games miss is immersion. They always come off as arcade games because you're constantly being assaulted by hit marker, damage indicators, dodge mechanics and so on. It would be nice if a dev took things seriously for once...
Boomer shooter = Arcade Fps. The point is being an arcade game, so no, they do take things seriously and make the games like this on purpose.
Go play cod, kid
Man, Forgive me Father looks so sick. Can't believe I forgot to mention it in my video! Will definitely be playing that soon. Also, I like the content, subbed!
I really want to see the indie shooter scene adopt the look of early 2000s the most. We arleady see it creep up with certain DOOM 3 inspired games, Sprawl and even Ion Fury from 3d realms. Now it's only a matter of time until indie devs start to try replicating the look of mid 2000s games like HL2 and Halo 3, which to me is kind of a sweetspot. Halo 3 under right circumstances STILL looks gorgeous, at times even better than Infinite somehow.
Yep, that's exactly what I want too.
I'd like to see something that looks similar to the Metroid Prime games. I think those look way better than Halo 2.
That needs to happen. There's also games like FEAR, Crysis, early COD, Prey, Killzone, Black, and Far Cry 1 and 2.
Thx for mentioning Retchid, I try to keep every game like this on my radar as I love these so much. Retchid was the only one I did not know about! Sadly it's 25€ which is way too much. I hope they discount it, games like these tend to not sell well if over 15€...
How come Void bastards, released way before Forgive me Father gets only a passing mention? Nobody seems to be talking about it despite it being a great game.
God i love 2000s graphics
Nice, deadlink wasn't on my radar, that's going on the wishlist.
>there are some amazing ps1 inspired games
>cuts to dusk
i think you mean quake
Quake is definitely part of DUSK's identity. But so are the the PS1 low poly aesthetics because they co-existed around the same era.
@@brokenportalsthe... the low poly aesthetics are from quake... boomer shooters werent on ps1
@dkskcjfjswwwwwws413 Yes and no. There were in fact retro Shooters ported to the ps1 but the boomer term didn't come until after a few generations later.
Like I already said, quake and the ps1 coexisted around the same era, where the main difference between pc and ps1 was hardware capacity. The reason I mentioned ps1 inspired graphics is because it's a more recognisable term in the indie shooter scene than just saying quake inspired graphics. But the terms are interchangeable in the context of dusk and boomer shooters I suppose.

I disagree, if only because "PS1 visuals" is a term that has loads of content and tutorials for that is trying to recreate a very specific style of visuals iconic to the PS1. Love your content.
@joel6376 Thanks man. That is a fair point. The aesthetic is definitely just for the visuals after all. For the sake of cohesion I'll separate the Quake and ps1 style graphics in the future.
Great vid ! keep up the good stuff
I really like the look & gameplay of Fortunes Run.
Yeah, though I feel like it could've really benefited from a full 3d look rather than 3d environments with sprites. There's something about it's immersive sim nature that seems better suited for full 3d imo.
another great video
pixel art is timeless
My personal mantra is that gameplay matters more than anything else and graphical fidelity comes third. As long as the gameplay is good, I'm fine with PS1 style graphics.
Then you'll LOVE dwarf fortress
Try Mullet Mad Jack.
Will eventually. Looks really stylish.
They're so boring when they mimic the movement of Titanfall 2 with all the wall jumps, slides and what not. Extremely boring mechanics designed in an easy way out by a developer. One of the reasons the first Counter Strike got so popular was because of it's heavy-feel of movement. You jump, you land, and after you land your speed stops entirely and starts to accelerate, with this it means that your movement means everything, your key presses are more important and it's very rewarding when using it right.
counter strike got popular because noobs couldnt play quake, lets stop pretending the neutered quake/goldsrc movement is anything special, its sluggish and it feels like crap, especially in 1.6
and no, bhops arent when you hit 3 frame perfect jumps to go 5% faster, or to extend your jump by 6 hammer units
while i do agree every "boomer shooter" tries too hard to be a low budget titanfall, i dont think they should go for "counter strike" movement because thats something literally noone wants, id be fine with regular quake movement, or even half life
now go shill vineyard or something
What is the game at 1:00, that looks really cool I'd like to play it
It's called Slain
Thank you very much my friend@@brokenportals
