Turbo Overkill is my number one, it's just so good in all aspects I love it :) But great games that you mention, HROT I have a full episode 1 and 2 review on in the channel It's a wonderful game :) Wait did you play it on hardcore and the achievement didn't register once you were done? If so then that has happened to me as well like two times, it's really really painful when that happens haha....
I play them because it takes me back to a time when i loved gaming, even playing golden eye and perfect dark on pc with keyboard and mouse these days is peak gaming keep your cod im playing playing turbo overkill or painting my screen red with brutal doom ir prodeus
Good man to include Metal Hellsinger, as someone who build his very pc himself for gaming in 2006 this game is the most fun shooter I´ve ever played. Reminds me a lot on Painkiller series, but fragging enemies to the rythm of amazing metal specifically made for the game by top metal artists? You feel the love put into this game from the very first second, Metal Hellsinger is a masterpiece which belongs along side games like Skyrrim, GTA V, RDR2 and other legendary games.
That's funny because that's exactly the reason I don't like it. I can't stand the rhythm shooting when I play a game I'm often just spamming mad bullets while jamming my own metal tracks.
Actually a lot of Retro Shooters that he mentioned in the previous vid he did that was similar had eluded me or I had just forgotten about em because there are so many of these now, but his vid helped keeping track of which ones I wanted to try... Which were all of em really
I might overwhelm you now but I released a new one yesterday that is bigger and better then any previous video haha. th-cam.com/video/XdgPEtTa7Qo/w-d-xo.html
METAL HELLSINGER's music is sometimes kinda slow for my taste and it doesn't let me shoot 2 times faster. What's the point of being a rhytm game without letting to use other tempos? Hi-Fi Rush does let you do this.
For me the tempo is spot on, i enjoyed every single track in the game. Also they released a DLC a couple of days ago where im pretty sure they added so you can change the tempo etc. I could be wrong tho havent had the time to dig into it
@@ZlimBratSki I mean, the music can stay the same, I want to be able to play "notes" that are 2 times shorter and so on. If the tempo is, lets say, 120, I would like to press the left mouse like if it would be 240 on anything faster than a shotgun.
I agree with the tempo. I love the music, but the fact that the tempo is the same all throughout the music and game just makes it so boring, repetitive and unintuitive.
@@ZlimBratSki also yes i did change my name to something people can spell. My main goal was to put something when you search it my channel is the only thing that pops up
Best part about sharing prodeus with your friends(in my case, my teen son.) is that you can then play coop campaign with them. More boomer shooters should do this…. Mmmmm I bought dread Templar when there was like…..6 or 7 levels? Time to give it its proper playthrough!
Aaah the perfect father and son game! Blood, demons and pixelart it doesnt get much better 😊 haha no but seriously thats awesome! My son is turning 8 now in April so im gonna have to wait still, Fortnite it is..... I have a review up on Dread templars full release and in short, its worth giving in a proper spin :)
The Doom series is my favorite series and Eternal is easily my favorite one of the bunch. Even though it has modern graphics I think you're right to call it retro because of the movement and the arsenal. It's just as Quake-like as Dusk, HROT or Wrath: Aeon of Ruin.
@@ZlimBratSki speaking of drawing inspiration, I have a theory. The reason id software hasn't made a single player quake game since quake 4 is because they've decided to make quake their multiplayer franchise and rolled all of the single player elements into the Doom series. That's the reason that new Doom has faster gameplay than Doom 3, has jump pads and Doom Eternal has fantasy elements and a shot gun as the starting weapon.
@@onlyusernameleft2 You could be right on that! Its to bad that quake champions has its problems, its a decent title that could be a great arena pvp game. But oh man imagine a new sp quake, that would be insane! Bethesda owns the IP now as in doom I think. So its not impossible for it to happen some time in the future :)
DOOM (modern versions) is not a shooter, Its first person meelee combat with guns. Dead enemies keep stading is the worst shooter experience possible. Imagine playing any other shooter like this: you make a headshot and your enemy stands wating for you to hit him in the face. How would that look like in UnrealTournament, CSGO, Serious Sam. Its just dumb. You have to watch an endless repeating loop of MK fatalities, instead of shooting.
@@Boris-Vasiliev you can choose to shoot them once they have been staggerd. You dont have to do a finishing move on them. And it's nice that the game dares to try something out of the ordinary even tho it does become a little to much it's still pretty awesome
@@ZlimBratSki I feel like its in the same ball park. Its insane what modders do with GZ doom, games like Blade of Agony comes to mind. I swear the gameplay for me in games like these just top most AAA games.
@@Vlad_-_-_ I agree 100%! If you havent check out Selaco here: th-cam.com/video/ISjJRvohRdI/w-d-xo.html Thats the most advanced GZdoom game that I know of :)
Hahaa, I own like 12 of those games =P yeah, highly suggested list. (Also partially unrelated, but newblood gave me permission to make a Doom mod based on Dusk stuff, so I've ported guns and monsters from dusk into doom. Basically, Doosk, as I called it.)
Thank you for those kind words! ❤️🔥 That's actually a fantastic idea! I'll see what I can do in the future, right now im working on my most ambitious video ever and its taking its sweet time :o
@@jacksheldon8566 sorry if I was unclear, but I dont have a video for doom mods* only one for mods in general. But I should def make one for doom mods :)
What kind of Nonsense is this ? How do Wolfenstein, The New colossus, Doom Eternal, Metal Hellsinger relate to Retro-Old School shooters? What unites all other projects except these ? Pixel graphics are correct, are there any in other projects? Personally, when making this list, I would not add games in which it is not there
The nonesense being the fact that eternal and wolfenstein takes heavy inspiration from 90's shooters and that is what defines a boomer shooter. Apart from the graphics the gunplay, the pick ups, the secrets, the level design are all modern interpretations of 90's shooters
Totally! I was asking myself back and forth which one to put in but ended up with the first one for no special reason more then its been fully released 😁
I was with you until the awful Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. PRODEUS is actually not that great either sadly. DOOM ETERNAL is awesome but not really a retro FPS. Cool video nonetheless! The 5 best retro FPS for me until now: DUSK CULTIC ION FURY AMID EVIL DREAD TEMPLAR And the true 2022 GOTY ➡ CHOP GOBLINS
Well I ofc disagree with you considering my list and in all fairness more goodies has come out in 2023 now since the video was made but one thing I can give you on the Wolfenstein is that it has to many cutscenes, to much filler talking but the gameplay is really tight and fun. Prodeus is very simple outside it's skin but very deep and meaty inside it and the games custom maps is what makes it to the top. Eternal has all the mechanics that makes a retro shooter, for me what makes a retro shooter is it's movement, the fact that you can carry the whole arsenal of weapons at once, the type of arsenal, the gameplay loop and level design. Eternal nails all of that but adds in some new things to it as well :)
my suggestion is anyone trying to recomend genre to a friend dont be afraid to recomend vannilla like doom eternal you dont want to hit them with the ultrakill body pillow just yet
I do not think that's the best way to go about it. As someone new to the genre will never be able to relieve the magic that once was when all of it was brand new and innovative, with young minds that had not explored this part of gaming before magic can happen but that is not the case today.
Boomer shooter: pixellated graphics, "to the point" gameplay. Doom Eternal: 4K textures, geometry complexity is through the roof, you can jump, double jump, climb wall, wall run, sling onto poles, use a grappling hook, the aesthetic of "bright colors" is actually a modern take on retro as seen through nostalgia, popularised by Hotline Miami, which immediately became so mainstream that we've seen it used in Farcry 5's DLC and Rage 2... Doom is an old IP trying to modernise itself. Boomer shooters are new games that try to "retro" themselves. Doom Eternal could be used to teach what a boomer shooter IS NOT... It is not a boomer shooter by any stretch of the imagination. Yes, it has "Doom" in the name and doom is an old franchise. So are the latest Tomb Raider games and we don't call those "boomer 3D platformers"... If Doom Eternal is "boomer", then the latest Mario Kart is a "boomer racing game", the new Street Fighter is a "boomer fighting game", and Call of duty, which at this point is a 23 years old franchise, is also a boomer shooter. The modern Doom games are modern fps. Same goes for the new Wolfenstein games as well.
Graphics does not define if its a boomer shooter or not. The mechanics of the game defines it for example: pickups, being able to carry all weapons at once, fast movement etc etc and to be called a boomer shooter the game needs to draw inspiration from mechanics used in a 90's shooter, can be with a modern twist but it needs to be clear it draws inspiration from it and both modern doom and wolfenstein does that to a high degree. Neither wolfenstein nor doom resembles any of the modern shooters at all apart from graphics but more modern takes on shooters from the 90's hence boomer shooters
@@ZlimBratSki Dude... Come on... Do you think that the devs of Cultists, Dusk, Ion Fury and all of these games do not know how you make a circle? Why are all their walls square with hard edges? Because they're trying to copy the limitations of the 90's. This intent is all that matters. Clearly, Doom Eternal's intent isn't to feel like an old game. Doom Eternal has more polygons in a single weapon than Ion Fury has in an entire chapter... Also, when you boot ion fury, you do it for nostalgia, just like every boomer shooter... I dare you to find nostalgia in a modern Wolfenstein or Doom... (Yeah, they put a Doom guy dolls and some retro rooms... Whoa, I'm overwhelmed with nostalgia, it really feels like the 90's... 😒) Doom is from 1993 Fifa is from 1993 Doom evolved with technology Fifa evolved with technology Doom Eternal is a boomer shooter therefore... Fifa 2023 is a boomer soccer?! If not, why?! Doom Eternal is not a boomer shooter. Boomer shooter: New IP trying to cater to an old ass audience Doom Eternal: Old ass IP, trying to cater to a modern audience Their intent are diametrically opposed. And if actual boomer shooter were doing just like Doom Eternal, they would have fancy graphics, fancy mechanics, right? Then... How would you call them? You'd call them "FPS"... It's all about the intent. The fact that they let you have all weapons at once doesn't prove it. First because the way they set up encounters and ammo drops, you don't actually have a huge choice of weapon at any given time. And secondly, one thing doesn't make a trend. In the 90's most bosses were a 3 step encounter, right? Does that happen in modern video games? YES, all the time, that's a 40 years old trope that just won't die... So, every game with a boss in 3 steps is a boomer game? No, of course not. But Doom Eternal has a a weapon wheel therefore it's enough for it to be a boomer shooter? Feels as though Doom Eternal gets preferential treatment here...
@@SLRModShop Cmon dude, your making it way harder then it has to be. The name boomer shooter comes from a meme to begin with it's fairly new to even use it at all it's not like it's been around for ages. And that meme referred to shooters from the 90's. Both doom eternal and Wolfenstein has arena styled areas with enemies to clear to advance, secrets, opportunity to carry all weapons, health picks ups, bosses, fast and fluid movement and so on. All of those mechanics are influenced from the 90's shooters and modern shooters don't have that. Saying it as you say it makes every game in the world a boomer game because every game in the world has taken inspiration from somewhere that's just facts. But the term boomer shooter is a subgenre for modern shooters having 90's shooters mechanics in them and it does not have to be pixelated/sprite graphics.
SLR is right: "Boomer shooter: New IP trying to cater to an old ass audience Doom Eternal: Old ass IP, trying to cater to a modern audience" There is indeed absolutely nothing in common between playing Doom Eternal/2016 and playing a classic, golden age shooter. I abstain from terms like boomer-shmoomer, cause they don't bring any clarity. FPS genre was making a hyperjump every couple of year since 1991, so every wave of those games was based on very different technology and had different features and merits. Nonetheless, there were quite a few common denominators that are now pretty much forgotten by the mainstream industry, but that does not detract from the winning gameplay formula that the titles from that age have developed. I'd like to point out 10 key elements that characterize a classic golden-age 90's FPS. 1) No diluting of the core gameplay whatsoever! As the Predator-survivor put it: " ...hunt them, and kill them - in that order". That is it!! Reloading, grinding, tweaking, crafting, arsenal limiting, overlong cutscenes, boring "lore" - throw all that away. Essentially, it's go some place really cool, locate an arsenal of weapons, and shoot something memorable in a memorable manner with some immersive music to boot. Do that times 1000. Repeat. Yes. News flash: people do like to repeat good things. They did so for thousands of years. And enjoyed it ;-) 2) No forcing unrelated mechanics from other genres. Never. A mandatory mix of battery acid with chocolate chip ice-cream in every scoop - is a definitive no-no. No classic FPS fan worth his(her?) shotguns will want to play 3 parts walking simulator, 4 parts racing game and 5 parts Super-Mario for every 1 part shooter. 3) No arenas! No "two man enter - one man leaves" aquarium-style cock-fight nonsense. The classic 90's FPS levels were built in a maze-esque(!) structure, (yes - Quake, Blood, Hexen, Doom, Powerslave, Killing Time, Eradicator, System Shock, Unreal, Quake 2, Hexen 2, KISS and a few hundred others, no need to go on) often taking inspiration from actual buildings with paths often requiring keys. They were built mostly with the intent to be traversed on foot. Although some games featured flight-related levels as well (not very successfully) The approach could be both linear and multi-path. Maze solving and even puzzle solving to progress - are both legit staples, appearing each one separately or both together. 4) Enemies (almost) never teleport out of nowhere. There are some examples of that happening, but as a rule this was considered a bad taste, lame design and was generally avoided. Conversely, the enemies are already there, confronting and ambushing the player seamlessly integrating into the level. No popping out of the blue. In some games, you could even see the enemies have many idle animations while they are hunting for the player. For example, the Krall in the original Unreal played some alien backgammon (or something like that). etc. Needless to say, the developers invested enough time to code enemy AI (the best they could), so that it could navigate the level as well, and not just jump around in an aquarium like today 5) Progression approach to level design. The level is a single coherent unit. It is NOT build from segments where the player is locked in with the enemies and is only allowed to progress when they are dead, followed by a boring walk to the next cage. This either happens rarely as a part of some intricate trap, or only with bosses. Instead, the player ventures deeper into the level in an exploratory manner, gradually encountering more challenging enemies, ambushes, setups, traps etc. Essentially, it's Indiana Jones with a minigun. Where to go next? Just follow the bodies! 6) Tactical supremacy. A staunch characteristic of a golden age shooter - was the ever-present possibility to win by using tactics and strategy (as opposed to the modern frog&ostrich simulators). No particular playstyle was favored above others, while victory by using strategy, (as in - your brains) was always on the table. 7) Battle planning. There was indeed an intelligent investment into battle design, based on crossfire, traps, enemies in hidden compartments, chain ambushes, etc. It was quality over quantity more often than not. The general rule of thumb was - fewer enemies, but really dangerous ones. 8) Badass hero. No, that's not in cutscenes. Hehe. In a classic shooter, - the protagonist was never made of straw and cardboard. He could very well take some damage before succumbing to his wounds. The character never felt weak, even if it was only a beginner playing. As the difficulty and the game progressed - the margin of error gets narrower, resulting in a very intelligently made learning curve, not cheap-shot galore. (there were some poorly made exceptions, i know) 9) Strafe-based, hard-cover - shoot first ask later. A classic shooter was strafe-based. That is a must. Not jump-based(!), not dodge-based(!), not slide-based(!). It was STRAFE-based. In cases where such thing was only partially possible - hard cover was used to avoid hitscan or homing attacks. This alone, requires the levels to be structured in a certain way. 10) Finally, the general approach to what a skillful gameplay is - was to take the least amount of damage (or none at all) and destroy the opposition in an untouchable-like super-assassin manner. This is starkly contrasting to the modern fare of games, where HP act like some kind of a timer, and the point is to pretty much ignore HP, (as long as you have it) and merely make sure that the opposition dies faster than you do. We'll throw in a bonus: classic age FPS - were usually styled after dark themes, be it industrial, fantasy futuristic or distopian. No pink unicorns. And there was music! That was a big thing. Normal music, composed by a COMPETENT composer and played continuously throughout the level. Not some machine noise that results from beating a guitar against the amplifier. So, it's something like that... ;-)
@@HexenStar So then iLLWiLL as an example is not a boomer shooter? Even tho it more or less nails all the things you mention apart from the graphics. Dosent make sense that graphics defines a game I refuse to go with that argument, because a boomer shooter/game in general is not defined by its graphics but its mechanics, design and gameplay :) iLLWiLL: th-cam.com/video/nJtW-kPxh1w/w-d-xo.html
I love boomer shooters but honestly I don't like Prodeus I think it sucks i had a lot more fun in Project Warlock, I tried Prodeus twice like 2 years ago or so but it's just bad way to easy and I am not trying to imply im good no it's just the game that badly designed the graphics were nice but that's it, the game has no beat and I simply never had any adrenaline or sensation playing it just felt blend. Like yea just go play Brutal Doom for free instead of buying Prodeus it's a loooot better.
I totally respect that everyone dosen't like all the games I do and I can kinda see what your saying here. But what made it stand out for me was as you said the graphics and then that there is actual co-op, the custom maps that brings so many hours of fun and the level editor which I suck in but it's a fun tool.
No they are not boomer shooters per definition, but they draw heavy inspiration from boomer shooters making them modern retro inspired shooters. And in todays day and age what we call a boomer shooter is exactly that. It dosent have to have pixelated or low poly graphics to be a boomer shooter, but it has to draw inspiration from the 90s shooters more or less to be a boomer shooter. And the modern Wolfenstein games do that in more then a couple of ways. They play more or less like any modern retro inspired shooter but with the AAA stamp on it. Just like DOOM or DOOM eternal. Metal hellsinger is the exact same there. It had the core principles of a modern boomer shooter. But this one with rythm added to it.
A boomer shooter is a game that takes inspiration from the games released in the 90's and eternal and wolfenstein do in a lot of ways :) But thats my opinion
you didn't even try did you? straight capturing the game trailers of youtube. didn't even bother downloading them so the channel icon on the bottom right does not show. could have given us yours honest opinion of the shooters that you've played and recommend. but no! alas content creation has come to scrambling a bowl of mess and milking those so soo sweet views.
Honestly wolfenstein new collosus is god awful, god awful cutscenes , very linear corridor like bunker levels and the guns feel worse than the first game. Major disappointment, why you reminded me of this? I wouldnt call it a boomer shooter at all, i would say its the disappointing sequel to new order which is the game we played back then when we didnt have boomer shooters up our pockets to play.
@@Cnsmf868 no not really in the first game the assault rifle was awesome, in the second game when upgraded it becomes the best weapon in the game and it fires in semi auto with massive armor piercing damage, id rather have the laser gun from the previous game than this i win weapon and all of combat takes place in bunkers.
I’d have given my nod to the first one as well personally. It has a place imo as one of the first modern attempts at delivering what we loved about the shooter genre before halo and cod took over. It showed us all that run and gunning was still awesome.
Putting it like that gives it a special place for sure, but imo the second one is overall better and it would be my go to introducing someone new to the gameplay style :)

Actually a lot of Retro Shooters that he mentioned in the previous vid he did that was similar had eluded me or I had just forgotten about em because there are so many of these now, but his vid helped keeping track of which ones I wanted to try... Which were all of em really
I might overwhelm you now but I released a new one yesterday that is bigger and better then any previous video haha.

oh dam Amid Evil released a VR version on 4/20
Man I wish I could play VR but the motion sickness is real for me :(
METAL HELLSINGER's music is sometimes kinda slow for my taste and it doesn't let me shoot 2 times faster.
@@RocketEightEight ah I gotchu, yeah that would be a cool feature! Apart from hi fi rush I cant think of any rythm game that has that feature?
I agree with the tempo. I love the music, but the fact that the tempo is the same all throughout the music and game just makes it so boring, repetitive and unintuitive.

Aaah the perfect father and son game! Blood, demons and pixelart it doesnt get much better 😊 haha no but seriously thats awesome! My son is turning 8 now in April so im gonna have to wait still, Fortnite it is.....
I have a review up on Dread templars full release and in short, its worth giving in a proper spin :)
ah the boomer-zoomer alliance
The Doom series is my favorite series and Eternal is easily my favorite one of the bunch. Even though it has modern graphics I think you're right to call it retro because of the movement and the arsenal. It's just as Quake-like as Dusk, HROT or Wrath: Aeon of Ruin.
Yeah exactly! The graphics are not what define a "boomer shooter" in 2023, its where the game draws inspiration from that does it :)

I was with you until the awful Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. PRODEUS is actually not that great either sadly. DOOM ETERNAL is awesome but not really a retro FPS. Cool video nonetheless!
The 5 best retro FPS for me until now:
DUSK
CULTIC
ION FURY
AMID EVIL
DREAD TEMPLAR
And the true 2022 GOTY ➡ CHOP GOBLINS
New Colossus gameplay wise is fun but story is absolute pice of garbage and considering that quantity of cutscenes ...well play new order ...
god tier list.
Hell yeah 🌟😊
my suggestion is anyone trying to recomend genre to a friend dont be afraid to recomend vannilla like doom eternal you dont want to hit them with the ultrakill body pillow just yet
I do not think that's the best way to go about it. As someone new to the genre will never be able to relieve the magic that once was when all of it was brand new and innovative, with young minds that had not explored this part of gaming before magic can happen but that is not the case today.
The real question is HOW NOT get hooked with these games.
haha good one! Good one indeed 👍

Doom is from 1993
Fifa is from 1993
Doom evolved with technology
Fifa evolved with technology
Doom Eternal is a boomer shooter
therefore...
Fifa 2023 is a boomer soccer?!
If not, why?!
Doom Eternal is not a boomer shooter.
Boomer shooter: New IP trying to cater to an old ass audience
Doom Eternal: Old ass IP, trying to cater to a modern audience
Their intent are diametrically opposed.
SLR is right:
"Boomer shooter: New IP trying to cater to an old ass audience
Doom Eternal: Old ass IP, trying to cater to a modern audience"
There is indeed absolutely nothing in common between playing Doom Eternal/2016 and playing a
classic, golden age shooter. I abstain from terms like boomer-shmoomer, cause they don't bring any
clarity. FPS genre was making a hyperjump every couple of year since 1991, so every wave of those
games was based on very different technology and had different features and merits. Nonetheless,
there were quite a few common denominators that are now pretty much forgotten by the mainstream industry,
but that does not detract from the winning gameplay formula that the titles from that age have developed.
I'd like to point out 10 key elements that characterize a classic golden-age 90's FPS.
1) No diluting of the core gameplay whatsoever! As the Predator-survivor put it: " ...hunt them, and kill them -
in that order". That is it!! Reloading, grinding, tweaking, crafting, arsenal limiting, overlong cutscenes, boring "lore" -
throw all that away. Essentially, it's go some place really cool, locate an arsenal of weapons, and shoot something
memorable in a memorable manner with some immersive music to boot. Do that times 1000. Repeat.
Yes. News flash: people do like to repeat good things. They did so for thousands of years. And enjoyed it ;-)
2) No forcing unrelated mechanics from other genres. Never. A mandatory mix of battery acid with chocolate
chip ice-cream in every scoop - is a definitive no-no. No classic FPS fan worth his(her?) shotguns will want to
play 3 parts walking simulator, 4 parts racing game and 5 parts Super-Mario for every 1 part shooter.
3) No arenas! No "two man enter - one man leaves" aquarium-style cock-fight nonsense. The classic 90's FPS
levels were built in a maze-esque(!) structure, (yes - Quake, Blood, Hexen, Doom, Powerslave, Killing Time,
Eradicator, System Shock, Unreal, Quake 2, Hexen 2, KISS and a few hundred others, no need to go on)
often taking inspiration from actual buildings with paths often requiring keys. They were built mostly with the
intent to be traversed on foot. Although some games featured flight-related levels as well (not very successfully)
The approach could be both linear and multi-path. Maze solving and even puzzle solving to progress - are both
legit staples, appearing each one separately or both together.
4) Enemies (almost) never teleport out of nowhere. There are some examples of that happening, but as a rule
this was considered a bad taste, lame design and was generally avoided. Conversely, the enemies are already
there, confronting and ambushing the player seamlessly integrating into the level. No popping out of the blue.
In some games, you could even see the enemies have many idle animations while they are hunting for the player.
For example, the Krall in the original Unreal played some alien backgammon (or something like that). etc.
Needless to say, the developers invested enough time to code enemy AI (the best they could), so that it could
navigate the level as well, and not just jump around in an aquarium like today
5) Progression approach to level design. The level is a single coherent unit. It is NOT build from segments where
the player is locked in with the enemies and is only allowed to progress when they are dead, followed by a boring walk
to the next cage. This either happens rarely as a part of some intricate trap, or only with bosses. Instead, the player
ventures deeper into the level in an exploratory manner, gradually encountering more challenging enemies, ambushes,
setups, traps etc. Essentially, it's Indiana Jones with a minigun. Where to go next? Just follow the bodies!
6) Tactical supremacy. A staunch characteristic of a golden age shooter - was the ever-present possibility
to win by using tactics and strategy (as opposed to the modern frog&ostrich simulators). No particular
playstyle was favored above others, while victory by using strategy, (as in - your brains) was always on the table.
7) Battle planning. There was indeed an intelligent investment into battle design, based on crossfire, traps,
enemies in hidden compartments, chain ambushes, etc. It was quality over quantity more often than not.
The general rule of thumb was - fewer enemies, but really dangerous ones.
8) Badass hero. No, that's not in cutscenes. Hehe. In a classic shooter, - the protagonist was never
made of straw and cardboard. He could very well take some damage before succumbing to his wounds.
The character never felt weak, even if it was only a beginner playing. As the difficulty and the game progressed -
the margin of error gets narrower, resulting in a very intelligently made learning curve, not cheap-shot galore.
(there were some poorly made exceptions, i know)
9) Strafe-based, hard-cover - shoot first ask later. A classic shooter was strafe-based. That is a must.
Not jump-based(!), not dodge-based(!), not slide-based(!). It was STRAFE-based.
In cases where such thing was only partially possible - hard cover was used to avoid hitscan or homing
attacks. This alone, requires the levels to be structured in a certain way.
10) Finally, the general approach to what a skillful gameplay is - was to take the least amount of damage
(or none at all) and destroy the opposition in an untouchable-like super-assassin manner. This is starkly
contrasting to the modern fare of games, where HP act like some kind of a timer, and the point is to pretty
much ignore HP, (as long as you have it) and merely make sure that the opposition dies faster than you do.
We'll throw in a bonus: classic age FPS - were usually styled after dark themes, be it industrial, fantasy
futuristic or distopian. No pink unicorns.
And there was music! That was a big thing. Normal music, composed by a COMPETENT composer and
played continuously throughout the level. Not some machine noise that results from beating a guitar
against the amplifier.
So, it's something like that... ;-)
@@HexenStar So then iLLWiLL as an example is not a boomer shooter? Even tho it more or less nails all the things you mention apart from the graphics. Dosent make sense that graphics defines a game I refuse to go with that argument, because a boomer shooter/game in general is not defined by its graphics but its mechanics, design and gameplay :)

Good, good 😁
None of the recent Wolfenstein games are boomer shooters. I wouldn't call metal hellsinger one either.
Spot on
No they are not boomer shooters per definition, but they draw heavy inspiration from boomer shooters making them modern retro inspired shooters.
Imo Doom eternal and Wolfenstein dont fit here. Too modern.
A boomer shooter is a game that takes inspiration from the games released in the 90's and eternal and wolfenstein do in a lot of ways :) But thats my opinion
