This is very interesting. I was always wondering if there was an FPS equivalent to RPGmaker, and this just might be it. Doom and Wolfenstein always had the perfect foundation for a simple fps engine the same way older Dragonquest and Final Fantasy served for RPGmaker.
Not as beginner friendly but making games with gz doom is an option. there all ready are some pretty good games on steam, its great if you know you want to make a retro shooter but want to customize it. you cant use doom assets but there is a wad pack thats replaced all the copy righted material with royalty free ones you can use as a base and modify.
This Engine reminds me of an older specialized engine from 2007 called "Raycasting Game Maker", and an Android app by SilentWorks "FPS Maker". Maybe this engine might be the best of both worlds?
I've entered two game jams and gave this engine a try, found out about the script capabilities and then realized it was a very competent, powerful engine. With the help of scripts, i've managed to create a weapon upgrade/skill/new game+ system. I've been modding doom for 18 years, so I did have some previous experience on making stuff, but still, a very solid engine for a newcomer. Looking forward to whatever the person in charge of the new version of the engine will come out with. And for those curious about it: one of the stuff i've did on the engine. (I had a week to make the game, most of the art was rushed, a sequel is on its way) th-cam.com/video/l2Qh1OnSSUw/w-d-xo.html
While I don't think that Unreal is all that difficult to use, the licensing does give me pause, and it is a particularly bloated engine that requires a bit more heft to run well. So this actually sounds like a really good option for those that don't want to get into programming but still have an idea they want to see brought to fruition and it's *much* lighter on system resources. This is actually the path I tend to recommend for people because not everyone is up to the task of learning how to program and even people with no experience can make a great game. You also mentioned GZDoom and it's a great choice as well. I'd also like to reiterate what you briefly touched on, that this can be used for more than just FPS's. If someone has an RPG in mind, maybe something with an isometric viewpoint, you can still use this engine, and GZDoom as well, to make such a game. If you've got an idea, just go for it.
HELLL YESSSSSSSSS love this engine SO dam much ♥ i think it'll be a pretty big name engine within the next 5 or so years, especially now that development has picked back up on it. crazy to think that eFPSe kinda started as an unofficial sequel to the RGM engine. (Raycasting game maker) anyway, thanks for helpin' bring more awareness to this engine! ♥♥♥ great video!
the maps in this do look a bit basic, but i do think it would be cool if they let you import maps from Quake map editors like trenchbroom. theres a Godot addon that lets you do that for your Godot games, so i dont imagine its really super hard to integrate the map editor for other games and engines.
Nice, simple aesthetic. I used to play around with programs like Click-N-Play and its follow-up, Games Factory I believe? This give me the same vibes but for 3D Shooters
I began by making a two-floor space and right off the bat I have an issue with the second floor: The floor texture is visible as a ceiling from floor 1, but when I go up to floor 2, the texture from that side is invisible and it looks like I'm walking on air. How do I fix this?
@leonardman2739 Try using the wall function as a ceiling rather than the floor texture. Then on the second layer, use the floor function. I'll test it myself if that doesn't work for you and get back to you.
@@SackoYT I don't think you can put a wall and a floor on the same tile on the map... But what I did is make a second floor entirely made of wall, then make the "second" floor on the third floor.
Yes it's great engine but I'm still waiting for one fix, that will fix the problem with big decorations that disappears when there's a wall between the player and decoration... This is super annoying and its the only thing that stops me from using EasyFPS Editor :/. Yes I did try disabling culling, but doesnt affect... at all
@bigslamma8701 One possible solution is to back up your dat files. Then, start deleting dat files from the folders gradually, load the project until it finally works. It could be a specific file that's misspelt, could have special characters or spaces that are causing crashes. Double check your back up dat files and then reinsert them without any special characters.
Another thing: I decided to try out scripting, something as simple as pressing Use on a terminal beside a locked door to get the door to unlock and open... But get this: no matter what I write on the script, or even if the script is entirely blank, whenever I activate the terminal, the entire game freezes!
efpse is pretty cool but it misses so many features! Seriously, it makes no sense that gzdoom, supposed to just be a doom source port has more features than efpse.
shame you cant make a map on it or a mini map otherwsie u need to keep ur levels really simple because ur players have no access to a map and get lost easily if its a complex level. why i stopped using it.
@@NomdePlume337 yes, it is good, take my (and everyone else's) word(s) for it, it's a much more unique experience than your dooms or your quakes or your whatevers, it's like those games if you just injected a ton of crack and other things into their veins, making a banger ass game with banger ass boss fights such as minos' literal corpse, gianni matragrano with wings (and swords), shadow the hedgehog but a red machine, big ass fish, angry bull, and most importantly... *BENJAMIN.*

@dtrevived5111 Raycasting Game Maker is a decent choice but it's more geared towards wolf 3d styled games.
