My boys are happy, but they'll never let me pick them up! I'm ok with it, but I keep having nightmares that they've escaped and I can't pick them up to put them back in their enclosure lol
I talk to my gerbils when I enter the room and they will come out and wait by the window for me. When I open the door (I have front opening doors) they crawl on my hand, sniff, look up and wink. One of them actually uses my as a playground and crawls on my shoulder by herself
Omg, I thought the popcorning thing was bad 😭 whenever I get my girls out to play they always do this, and I thought they were scared! Good to know that they are just excited!
My gerbil did the winking, sleeping in the open and grooming, and he was always comfortable enough to sleep on my lap. He recently passed away but im glad to know he was happy :)
awwww I love gerbils i used to have a pair of girls, Cookie and Chip, and soon i will be getting three boys! finding out about popcorning and winking in gerbils makes me love them even more
Whenever my gerbil sees me, he goes to the second part of his cage and tries to stick his nose out, the only way to make him stop is rather ignoring it or giving him a lil kiss, he'll do this if you say "kisses" too Idk how he learned it, but he just does it 😭
I love the relationship you and your gerbil have.I got my two a couple of weeks ago,One adores me and the other bites. But I know to be patient and they will eventually accept me ❤️
I just got my gerbils yesterday at PetSmart, and they already look for me, i put my hand in their tank as if I'm going to scoop them and they take turns on my hand smelling me. This warms my heart because ( I didn't know what they were doing at the moment it turned out to be popcorning) when I took them out of the cage I had bought with them and put them in their tank they "popcorn" a lot. But what does it means if they sleep on their backs, they both do ( these are my first gerbils).
Ty for posting this!! I didn't know they needed at least 8inches of bedding 🤯Any tips on getting your gerbils to hang out on your hands or shoulders? I got mine a few weeks ago and they're still difficult to pick up. 😭
I got my gerbil on the fifth of July and it started Let me hold it stray the way and started vibrating in a couple of days after I got it and it's very grooming in my hand as well and now is jumping on my hat and walking on top of it
My gerbils do half of these. One thing though, I brought the biggest gerbil cage I could find but it's still too small... And they're limited for toys because they chew everything! Tips appreciated
So I have 4 gerbils that are siblings in a very large enclosure with deep bedding, they do show signs of of being content and happy most of the time but I have this one out of the group who is the main construction gerbil. He works the most on the tunnels, stays hidden working on them more than the others well they go out to explore and chew on their wood chews or run. When he's going around the sides occasionally During the day he'll try to bite and chew as well as dig to get out. I try to let them free roam as well as he just seems to want to explore outside more than the others when he does this, but I'm not sure how to prevent it. I give them plenty of space and chews, along with things to do. They get hay and substrate with their normal bedding, they have a sand bath area, they have lots of different types of wood chews and even platforms for when they wanna climb about, so Im not sure why he continues to do it so often yet the others don't. Im not sure if he's just obsessive about it but it makes me worry hes not happy though when he's not trying to get out he seems very content. Do you or anyone else have advice on this? These are my first gerbils and I've been trying my best to give them everything they need to be happy, which everyone but him shows these behaviors. I know normally you shouldn't have them in larger groups but they were all siblings bonded and I've never had any issues amongst them just the ones specific behavior that's different from the rest. Am I doing something wrong? :(
Looks like you have yourself an architect just like Almond 🥰 This is quite normal for some gerbils. Based on what you have around and are doing to enrich their lives, there’s nothing to worry about. Some gerbils are content with what they have and others want to explore everything, even the unknown. Even if it scares them! My Beanie was like that, always wanting to come out. As long as no damage is being doing to the enclosure lid or they can’t harm themselves with their crazy habits, there’s not much to concern yourself with. We can’t give them their wild habitat completely, unfortunately. This does not mean they aren’t happy though! Having the other gerbils will help him keep occupied and stay interested even if he will inevitably have moments of wanting to be Superman and fly out in the open. He has a lot of activity, and has an amazing amount of energy so it’s going to be a tricky lifestyle! Try to keep your cool with him, make sure he’s running on the wheel, keep up with the boredom breakers and everything you’re already doing. Switching things up also helps a ton, try moving things around the enclosure every now and then to imitate a new environment (still keeping the comfort of their scent and known objects).
@@finsandwhiskers I'll keep all of this in mind, thank you so much! It's hard to not worry when I'm still so much newer to gerbils. Before I only had rats so they are still newer to me on getting used to their behaviors and daily activities but tbh I love how gerbils are! I'm glad they seem happy and I'm gonna make sure for my little superman I'll help change things up a bit to keep him occupied hopefully more often with the others lol. I appreciate the response so much! I'm gonna continue to watch all your videos cause I love all the info you have on gerbils, it's extremely helpful. :) Honestly your videos have already helped a ton from before and after getting them, coming back to them always help me think of new things for them. I plan on getting some nontoxic materials cause I was planning on making them little diy cardboard house they could have fun chewing on the windows and exploring. Maybe some homemade puzzles too! I've seen some people make mini cardboard dressers for them to pull open and chews through for seeds which seemed like fun. 😁
Another sign I discovered (maybe), is when they act like rascals towards you. Also. Staring contests, where smiling/laughing means you lose. Hm. I gotta see that I upload my old videos of my gerbies.

How often should I be doing a full clean out of their bedding, and can I take their bedding out to clean the mess at the bottom of my tank and put the same bedding back in again?
@@finsandwhiskers @ItzNotSoCreativeKyleigh I just got my first gerbil from Craigslist! I look there for animals that need rehomed (no breeders) so I can give them a good life :) He was in a family who got him for their small children, but their cats kept trying to get at him and the kids didn’t care about him. Even though they were nice, they didn’t really take good care of him. He had a small hamster cage, no hides, an inch or two of bedding, never any sand baths, no chews, no wheel, etc. His food was a seed mix full of sunflower seeds. It’s only been 4-5 days and he’s eating from my palm, recognizes my voice, was able to free roam twice, and he isn’t skittish around me or loud noises at all anymore! Within the first 2 days, I got him chews and a hidey house. Today, he just got a cage over double the size of his old one with four levels and he’s so happy and actually moving around now :) Tomorrow I’m getting him Oxbow Gerbil food, some treats, and a few more chews. My gerbils have a lot of enrichment (wheel, deep bedding, chew toys, different levels to explore) but they loooove digging in the corner of the cage. Is this bad or just excess energy they're getting rid of?
I’d try and observe why they might be doing that! What size is your tank/how many gerbils? Gerbils constantly work and update their tunneling system so they try to find any opportunity to change a space and sometimes they’re stubborn/won’t accept that they can’t. At some point this is something they’ll give up on but come back to repetitively. @@LittleGeri Hi! My gerbils used to dig in the corner too, until I found a couple of solutions. As in your case, it wasn't a matter of space, but rather that they got annoyed because they wanted to walk/dig in that direction 😂 I suggest that you hide tunnels / hideouts / laberynths inside the bedding, so that the gerbils believe that they already have a tunnel system. They will dig and burrow, but not in the corner. And another thing that you can do is hide a paper roll or a chew toy in the corner where they usually dig, so that they get distracted and start chewing instead 😉 Good luck! 😁
