    I remember right before I adopted my first gerbils a few years ago I binge-watched your videos for months, and I learnt so much, they are so useful. I honestly don’t think they would have had anywhere near as good a life had i not been educated by you and I’m so thankful to you for spreading such important and useful info! Everyone who owns a small pet should have to watch your videos by law before they buy them lol, they’re seriously so good!!

    I used to have a pair of gerbils which looked very similar to your pair, and they were the sweetest creatures! I often held them while they cuddled in my palm, groomed each other, ate food, and even fell asleep in my hand. They loved to be gently stroked on the head and would sometimes fall asleep while chirping and purring when I pet them. They passed away after about 3 years...overall amazing pets!

    Can you do a video on where you got your tank cages and lids, what you use for water bottles, how you spot clean large deep areas of substrate, how you don’t drop or lose gerbils or catch them if they get free. I remember having a gerbil as a child that would just up my arm to come out and see me but 5 mins of holding and she was off, she would launch herself on nearest table or floor space and she knew if she came back I’d put her away, treats didn’t work. I think my kids would struggle to handle them but beyond this I think they’re the perfect pet.

    How high should the terrarium be minimum?
    On the net I haven't really found one that's more than 50 cm, and I'm not sure if that's enough, because they need a big bedding.

    • @goatlps
      @goatlps 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think an ideally proportioned #gerbilarium (120x50x50cm - possibly taller) is available on the market. You need a 300L (66 gal UK/79 gal US) fish tank or a custom built perspex (acrylic) one, but they'd cost >£250. A DIY aquarium/tank is cheapest option, but #gerbils could eat the silicone holding it together.

    • @goatlps
      @goatlps 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ...But a >300L fish tank would be very heavy and almost impossible to fully clean. A bespoke 3mm acrylic enclosure is ideal: clear base tray 123x20x51cm; clear 4-sided (topless & baseless) centre piece 122x50x50cm, with a row of 1cm holes above the 20cm base tray line; clear lid with many 1cm holes 123x2x51cm. Probably >£300 though. Maybe 2mm acrylic would be solid enough, but would still be >£200, I'm guessing.

    Is a 40 gallon good

    • @goatlps
      @goatlps 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100 x 50 x 50 cm is minimum size, which is 250 litres/55 gal UK (66 gal US). Don't bother if you can't get one that big. A 4ft fish tank is usually about right. 120 x 50 x 50 cm is the ideal size, which is 300L/66gal UK/79.25gal US. Ideally gerbils will have at least 20cm substrate to burrow into on the enclosure's base.

      It's quite difficult to keep gerbils from alchohol and cigarettes, even if they're just 8 years old. It's all so instinctual. I would wait until the gerbil is at least 14 years old to seek rehab, and I can't believe I wrote such a weird reply.

You could pick her up and she is still completely unresponsive, after 5 minutes she is fine and starts moving again. Is anything seriously wrong with her or is it normal?

    hey guys! i have a problem that has been going on for a while now and would love some advice. i have 2 gerbils, one loves the wheel and the other doesn’t bother with it at all. the problem is the one that doesn’t like it uses it as a toilet! i looked up what to do and everyone said to clean the wheel and put the dirty tissues in a corner of the cage so he will start going there but it hasn’t worked. i have to clean the wheel multiple times a day, it makes their cage smell worse and also i feel bad for my other gerbil as he has to run in a dirty wheel! this has been going on for months now, any advice ?

    Hi Erin
    I have recently bought my first gerbils and I was wondering if you could give me any advice on bedding material.
    I have tried paper and sawdust but it doesn't really work I have to hoover everyday!
    And also on toys the have just chewed everything I have given them.
    I love you and I want to have a channel like yours. How mutch are the cages and where did you get them from
    Thanks

    • @katrinamichael3451
      @katrinamichael3451 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! What type of cage do you have? I find glass aquariums are best, because they keep all the bedding in, as gerbils love digging. Also, as for what type of bedding is best, wood shavings (not pine!), and paper are pretty good (at least for me). I usually mix Aspen wood shavings with paper bedding.
      I hope you have a lovely time with your gerbils! :)

    • @rueclouds1156
      @rueclouds1156 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi! I’m not Erin lol but I’ve watched her gerbil videos for like 3 years and I learnt a lot from her! So the bedding I used was a mixture of megazorb and aubiose, super great quality, you can buy it from horse suppliers/equestrian stores in bulk! For toys and a cage I would buy from the website zooplus- get wooden toys such as bridges. They do chew them up because their teeth are constantly growing, so you just have to buy more to help to wear down their teeth. Also things like edible cheap dog chews are great for gerbil chewing! The tank I used was from zoo plus - it was pricier than what you would buy from a normal pet store but so worth it because the ones you get in normal pet stores are terribly small. Hope this helps!

    • @mariier40
      @mariier40 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try mixing shavings and some nice soft bedding thats what I recommend

    • @mariier40
      @mariier40 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try some soft bedding with shavings that should do. Oh and get a good sized fish tank as big as you want but not to small. After you mix the bedding and shaving put it in. Now you can put in toys mostly you want chew sticks, toilet paper rolls, and even a little card board. Your wellcome!

    • @chloespencer5028
      @chloespencer5028 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a zoo in my bedroom Don’t use sawdust. It’s too dusty and it can be detrimental to their health. Aspen bedding, Carefresh or Megazorb are the best bedding for gerbils in my opinion. Also, wooden toys are the best and just keep stocking up when they destroy them.

    A 300L (66galUK/80galUS) 4ft fish tank would be a great #Gerbilarium, but expensive, very heavy and impossible to fully clean.
    A bespoke 3mm #Perspex (#acrylic) enclosure is ideal: clear external base tray 123x20x51cm - for easy full clean of 20cm deep substrate; clear 4-sided (topless & baseless) centre piece 122x50x50cm, with a row of 1cm holes above the 20cm base tray line; clear lid with many 1cm holes 123x2x51cm. Also I just lost my dog January 14, 2022 and I’m posting this in February 1 and it’s been pretty hard not having it my dog around anymore she was a full blooded beagle and her name is Daisy Mae and she was six years old she died from responsive meningitis I don’t know how much you know about dogs meningitis and it can affect like their veins and stuff it’s got tons of other side effects and we had to have the option to put her down because she would have it a lot and she was also having Zaidi attacks whenever she was not close to us or with us so we had to make that decision the 14th and we had to take her to the vet and get her put down because she was in so much pain and she was hurting and she just kind of let us know that she was ready we trust that

    Does anyone have advice for bonding them, I have two from different litters and they kept fighting when they we’re together. I have separated them and both seem depressed without a play mate, buying two more gerbils isn’t an option, I’d love for them to be friends but I also don’t want to risk them hurting the other. Plz help 🥺❤️

      You need a cage that is clean and then you need to install a partition. Then on both sides without furniture and floors and only make bedding and hay for a nest. Then you pack a mouse on each side and change sides 3 times a day. It's best to pack something to nibble in to reduce stress. If they don't look aggressive, pack them in a small room or large enclosure after 5-10 days. Best in the guest bathroom. If you understand each other there, put them back in the cage with a partition and repeat this for a few days. If you get on very well, put them together in the cage without a partition. Only pack in some furniture and at least 2 houses after about 2 days. If they get along then you did it! I hope I helped you! ❤️

    Hey Erin, I have a Question I was Thinking about Buying my Gerbils a 3 story cage.. with Bars, do you think that good for them? I would get sort of padding for the rails that have big squares and I would get like rat and ferret things that hang. Right now they live in a 10-gallon tank and there are only 2 females but I feel bad like there going around the same area over again. Please get to as soon as you can thank you for everything you do also its 24x16x24x16 I dont know how to do math lol but thats what the link said.

      _Petty_ if you search up large wooden hamster cage theres one i have which is huge and very good, from a shop called manomano online, bars aren’t great because they will chew it relentlessly as i found with my previous one :)

      I am quite experienced with gerbils as well, and I'd reccomend to not get a story leveled cage, and go for a larger cage, as a longer cage, since they need to be able to make burrows. Therefore a bar caged isn't really suitable since, again, they really need to burrow. Try to use natural decorations for in the cage, such as moss and wood.
      I hope I've been helpful. :)
      xx

    Hi! Nice video! I have a question, i see you use plexiglass in your large cage, is this ok for them? Don't they bite on the glass? Also, you use willow bridges and houses, do they last long? Or do they bite and chew on it so often that you have to buy new bridges and houses every few months? I guess if you give them enough "toys" (like cardboard and eggbox), they might chew less on the interior? Sorry for the bad english.

    I've had 3 wheels so far for my gerbils, 2 plastic and 1 wooden. Every time they chew them up beyond repair within a couple of days! ☹️ I want to be able to give them more chance for exercise whilst they're not out of the cage. What would you recommend? 😊

    • @ErinsArk
      @ErinsArk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The struggle is real haha! Mine did the same to many of their wheels. The silent spinner wheels are strong plastic, and the Savic ones are quite strong too. Otherwise you would probably be looking for something like this: www.nagerlaufrad.com/catalog-s2EN - they're expensive but probably last indefinitely. Although I imagine you may be able to find them cheaper elsewhere :)

      Just buy human kid's play pit sand. It's fine grain, not dusty, and non-toxic. Wickes sell it for £5 for 20kg, so you can change it daily. You can use any suitable tub to put it in. Argos sell it too, but it's damp, so you need to bake it in your oven to dry it!
