    What do you recommend avoiding when owning gerbils? 🐹 (ENG/ESP CC)

      I'd avoid lowering bedding for taming, it's not necessary and can cause the gerbs unnecessary stress

    • @gerbil_is_typing

      In U.S. pet stores, I've observed that most toys and accessories marketed as being for gerbils are really only suitable for hamsters. Avoid the plastic tubes and roaming balls (as I understand it, the latter are dangerous and stressful for gerbils). Also don't go for the cute painted wooden toys, and verify that the "natural" wood toys are not toxic. Most products don't even specify what materials they use, they just assume that it's a catch-all for rodents. To give them fuller enrichment, I gotta get creative and crafty lol.
      Side note: I'm really glad there's a proper channel for gerbil care like yours. I'm sure it helps other gerbils care-givers avoid many of the growing pains that I remember experiencing. So thank you for your hard work and for being so kind to your beautiful bbies 🌈🐹 (one day there will be a gerbil emoji..)

    I recommend avoiding...sunflower seeds. Many gerbil store foods are loaded with'em. And Gerbils(like mine), can easily get overweight. Use to be able to squeeze through toilet paper rolls. No longer. Just too big. Apple & banana are good as a treat. Not everyday, and not in large amounts. Romaine lettuce is a favorite(loaded with vitamin C). Bought a pine-wood home for both. They did some interior & exterior remodeling, by chewing it to pulp. A coconut shell with a cylinder of corrugated cardboard to act as a tunnel to the shell, works really good as a home. Great video. And Yes...never underestimate the intelligence of a gerbil. Every waking hour is spent on escaping that enclosure.

    • @finsandwhiskers

      You can potty train gerbils, somewhat. We had a sand bath for them, they quickly started to do their business in that. The gerbils learned the routine and waited for the new sand on sand day and would happily bathe and groom themself in the fresh sand

    So I've owned hamsters and I know if they think there cage is to small or boring they will chew anything like their bars (FYI I did have a 1600 square inch cage homemade cage) so will gerbils chew anything like the bars if they get bored??!?

    • @dantheman6698
      @dantheman6698 ปีที่แล้ว

      gerbils WILL 100% chew metal bars and its not because they are bored, they have to spend time every day wearing down their teeth and metal bars wear down their teeth much faster than chewing wood or cardboard or plastic. a gerbil will even lay on its back in your hand and grind its teeth down on a paper clip if you give it one.

  • @dantheman6698

    after having plenty of these little critters, id say avoid putting the food bowl on the bottom of the cage as they fill it with sawdust, cant find their food in it anymore and they get angry and start throwing their bowl around the cage to make noise so that i'd come refill it. i put their bowl inside a little house that they had to climb to and it would last them several days instead of several hours! similar thing for their water, a bottle with a metal bar cage is safe, but for tanks use a bottle that's securely fastened and one that they cant chew on, eg wrap it with 0.5-1cm square metal wire mesh.

    • @camelopardalis84
      @camelopardalis84 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You either give the remaining one away to someone who has a gerbil in the same situation who will correctly socialise the two or you yourself get a gerbil in the same situation and do the socialising correctly. If you don't know which option to choose, choose the one that results in the correct socialising method being used. Socialising them is tricky and not always successful. Doing it wrong can result in the death of one of the gerbils. The only information on socialising gerbils I am aware of is in German, so there's likely no use of providing you with a link.

    • @finsandwhiskers
      @finsandwhiskers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That could work, it would just need a cage topper for their wheel, sand bath, and water! The whole cage by itself can be the bedding area, and it will be, even if you keep their wheel, sand, and water there too because gerbils will put bedding over anything and everything. 😅 You might want to start with same sex siblings instead of from two different litters, otherwise the taming could be very tricky.
