That was my first impression, then I started to see the reasons for the change. I like the new modern look now. I like the comfortable interior, and the modern aerodynamic style. 31 miles to the gallon is very appealing too.
At first I thought the look was iffy but now I don't think it's that bad. I think it's because of the newness of the vehicle that puts off a lot of Jeep enthusiasts (i'm not one by the way). Maybe in a future refresh the lights would be changed a bit but in terms of the new aerodynamic look of the body it's here to stay. After all it is competing with other crossovers like the CRV.
Jeep has been using Uni-Frame (Not the same as uni-body) since 1984 when the first Cherokee XJ came out. The ZJ Grand Cherokee was also uni-frame. The current WK2 platform (Grand Cherokee and Durango) is also uni-frame. The difference if you are wondering is uni-frame has frame rails integrated into the chassis. A uni-body has the main body/chassis, and then subframes that bolt on in the front and rear (like most cars). This new Cherokee is uni-body, as is the Compass/Patriot.
I just bought a Latitude trim to replace a Dodge Journey. I feel it's a very solid car. I had a chance today to drive it in very heavy rain and it performed wonderfully. I did some light off-road with it and again it had no issues. I found (by mistake) it doesn't like mud very much. But after finding myself in the middle of a soft mud field I was still able to get out. it took a while but it did get out. Now to wait until winter and try it with snow. On a side note: the seats are very comfortable. Also with the 3.2 liter and 9 speed there was plenty of power for passing and I even found myself at one point doing 90mph but the engine rpm was still under 2k.
They blew an excellent chance to have gone old school with the exterior ( straight edges, classic grill, etc.) and used a very modern interior. But, let's face it, most SUVs and jeep like vehicles never see offroad use, they've become commuter cars for soccer moms.
You need to understand something, the compact SUV/crossover market is overflowing, if they stuck with "classic design" they would've gone nowhere. At least this car, exterior styling-wise, sets itself apart from the many many competitors. This is a practical car meant for both commuting, city driving, and the occasional rough weather driving. If they made the design any boxier (aka 'classical jeep'), the fuel economy would've suffered tremendously and nobody would buy them. If you want a real SUV, buy a gand cherokee. If you want a real off-roader, buy a wrangler.
This looks like every other crossover. To stand out, they would have had to go "old school" and used straight lines for the exterior to actually set itself apart from the crowd.
We bought a "Sport" level Cherokee just a few days ago. We love the thing! The “Sport” does not have a, 4WD low range mode, but it seems like the 9 speed has allowed 1st gear to be pretty low by itself. The Differential Brake Lock (DBL) system is what impressed me. It gives, even the “Sport”, some impressive off-road capability, which I have already tested a bit. Waiting to put more miles on the engine before I do more off-road stuff. Even the Sport is probably way more capability than most people would want to put their Family Truckser through. The capability is there, if you need it though. I had a 2005 Forester w/5 speed manual and it wasn't geared low enough. The Jeep w/9 speed auto works much better in the woods for me. No more engine ping and dying when I'm trying to crawl. No crawl with the Sube. Better crawl with the Cherokee, but I need more time with it.
What was wrong with the previous youtube window layout, they crammed everything into one single icon which makes everything take more time to adjust... Love the Jeep btw!
My last 3 lease vehicles were loaded Grand Cherokee's & the last 2 with Hemi's. The Hemi's averaged 12MPG because I actually DRIVE my vehicles. When your monthly fuel costs are the same as your lease payment the vehicle doesn't make fiscal sense anymore and you look for something more cost effective. I now drive the Escape and miss my Jeep's sooooooo much. I will go test drive this BABY GRAND as they're just trying to compete with high fuel costs which drove me out of the market.
If you could have only 1 vehicle for the rest of your life, the XJ would be it. Efficient, powerful, and quick, capable of commuting, off-roading, picking up groceries, lumber or the kids, going to a wedding, camping or towing a trailer was all part of its craft. It did all of these things and many more, while being durable, simple, easy to work on and possessing a timeless design. It also sold well in Europe and was the first JV vehicle in China. It was a CLASSIC.
I think it might do better than a Forester. Take a close look at those axle half shafts.. they are MASSIVE. Control of the rear wheels is at the rear differential, and in the Trailhawk model, you can lock the rear Diff. As long as the clutch mechanism is really durable.. It might do OK. The Trailhawk version did go though the Rubicon trail without assistance. That is more than most light SUV's can do. The looks... well... I don't know.
I am not so sure about that. The '14 Cherokee 3.2 9speed 2wd is EPA rated at 19 city/28 hwy vs. '00 Cherokee 4.0 5speed 2wd being EPA rated at 18 city/24 hwy. Those are pretty close numbers. Add Vari-O-Cam, Direct injection, and a 9speed, and the XJ might be on top! Factor in the XJ's ability to rip out stumps and pull 5,000+ pounds, and the '00's efficiency of engineering shines through.
yeah. The rear looks like the sportage because of the license plate placement. They should move the license plate off the bumper onto the tail gate like the grand cherokee. That would get rid of that big gaping empty space.
2012 Jeep Liberty Jet Limited. Deep cherry red. 430N. Skyslider. Jeep, bring back the friggin Liberty! I hope people start ditching crossovers. BRING BACK THE SUV!
R&N, superb review, spot on. I test drove the "weasel" Limited last week and my impressions about the breaks, 4 cyc engine, interior are in sync with yours. The V6 makes a huge difference, that's what I'd buy. I tested the 4cyc and you guys nailed it, my impressions were exactly the same. Then I drive the V6, it's really nice! I don't mind the look at all. In fact, I had no desire for such a vehicle but saw one on-line and it stopped me in my tracks. Some say it looks better in person (YES). But I really like the styling. As for the market, I think Jeep is very smart here. I'm a Subaru kind of guy and was considering moving from my 2010 Outback to a 2014 Forester. That's nothing pretty to look at. IOW, this isn't a product intended to make Jeep loyalist's happy, it's to attract as you say, people like me who might consider an Escape, Subaru, or similar. In the past, didn't even notice Jeeps. I don't care what you call it. I don't care if loyalists hate it. The product got my attention in a big way! I'm going to follow through next week and test the Forester turbo but unless it's crazy good, I'll be buying the Jeep (Limited). The technology is fantastic! My only tiny complaint is the back with seats down is a tad smaller than I like but not a deal breaker. I have no need for true offroad but do live off dirt roads that get muddy and snowy so I think this vehicle is more than enough for me. Again, excellent video and review.
You want to buy a nice Cherokee? Look for a mint condition late 90s or early 00s example with the 4.0 I6 motor. They're solid, reliable, they go anywhere and are easy to work on. This thing here should have been the new Compass considering it's some fancy Fiat vs. a Wrangler based product. No doubt this might drive more refined but if you want a Jeep and refined then pony up the extra dollars and get the Grand Cherokee. This Fiat shouldn't wear the Jeep name.
Have you noticed that the only existing "true" midsize SUVs left are the Xterra, FJ, and Wrangler? The consumer and the market is changing, and it appears that Jeep did an excellent job in staying relevant to the times. I just bought a Limited. It's not for off road. It's an alternative to a minivan, but with the ability to handle a BIT of off-the-pavement driving.
The confusion is the liberty was always called the cherokee outside the us. Just connecting the names again. People fail to remember that. The liberty wasn't called the cherokee in the us as they planned to continue selling the xl alongside the liberty but diamler killed that.
he hit the nail on the head in saying that the problem is in the name, it IS NOT a cherokee call it anything else, anything at all, but dont ruin the car that so many people love with a crv with a 7 slat grille
Sorry, but that reasoning makes no sense. Take a look at the Dodge Charger. Does it in any way resemble the original Charger, which was a two-door muscle car? Nope. The new Charger is a sleek, streamlined four door sports sedan, yet it's one of Dodge and Chrysler's best selling cars. So calling this car a Cherokee shouldn't be a problem. The old Cherokee is gone, and it's no longer a relevant automobile. The Grand Cherokee is doing well enough carrying on the Cherokee name. The new Cherokee is designed for the new market, and based on the current sales it's doing a great job.
i have no problem with the market being different but that would be like the next chevy pickup (equivalent to the silverado) being called the el camino, it's similar but it's a different class of automobile, i understand that markets change but you still dont call apples oranges because apples sell well
TheJack387 But the fact remains that if you tried to bring back the Cherokee in its previous form it would more than likely fail miserably(same goes with the Charger). Both cars are performing very well for Chrysler for today's market. There were people bellyaching about the Grand Cherokee at one point, but it's Jeep's best seller, and in the end that is what it's all about. It's not about apples and oranges, in the end, it's all about not being a lemon.
You took the words out of my mouth in regards to this car. I don't know how you personally feel about the design; I don't have much problem with it, although it is polarising. But I think the deal-breaker for me, as well as a lot of other prospective buyers will be this car's fuel consumption, which isn't any better than a Mazda CX-5 with the 2-litre SKYACTIV-G motor, FWD and the SKYACTIV-MT manual 'box. Personally, it would have to be either that or a B/C-segment car I'd buy over this.
So Nathan, when you say that the Cherokee is a modern vehicle built for people who want to go offload occasionally, are you talking about any model or are you
Know nothing? I know you bought an overpriced dodge dart :P The original cherokee is derived from the wrangler, one of the greatest 4x4s ever. This cherokee is simply an ugly joke based off a fiat/alfa car platform.
tshirt87 All he's saying is to test drive it first which I agree must be done. I did so this morning and was VERY impressed. Watch all the videos and read up on it too. This vehicle is getting nothing but very good if not great reviews.
I'm warming up to the styling though. I actually like the face. My issues comes once we get to the side view and rear. Something about the profile just looks awkward. I wish the beltline had just been a straight line all the way to the rear. And the rear just looks way too much like a Kia Sportage. I wish it looked a bit more like the Grand Cherokee back that. The interior looks sweet though. Also, the Trailhawk is the one to get, where you ever go offroad or not. It just looks badass.
Hey Nathan and Roman - Consumer Reports just released an article calling the new Cherokee "half baked." You both seem a little more confident on this Jeep's performance. You think CR is being too critical with their review? Think I should wait til next year to consider this purchase?
I don't see what the fuss is about. I think it looks great. I like those sharp headlights. It stands out. Its not vanilla or appliance like most of the bestsellers in its class. This, cx5, forester....all good alternatives to the others.
And the best small SUV is Mitsubishi Outlander - it looks nice, it's fuel efficient, has a good price, it has nice off-road ability; and it also can fit 7 people! So.. I don't know what other manufactures are thinking when making small SUVs.
I agree with Roman. If they had called it anything else there would be no problem another vehicle to compete within a segment but to call it Cherokee... Dodge is going to get a lot flak for that. I do want to see what the Trailhawk can do though.
Were they using the sports mode? I have no idea how to use the sports mode at all because I just got a Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4x4. Can someone tell me how to use it?
I don't know that I would agree with that, especially for the Cherokee. All the Cherokee's competitors hit somewhere around 30 mpg highway. The typical Cherokee buyer is not going to want to pay a penalty to drive it. That is even more true in markets where vehicles are taxed on CO2 emissions.
That style of jeep is still in production .It is the Jeep wrangler or the Rubicon among many others that are the Jeep you are use to. I had a negative like at first on this look, then I changed my mind .I love it. I like the other style of Jeep Just like you do. I think it will grow on people.
I own a trailhawk so far very good- i will bein mountains next month & can't wait -- I don't really like the front but it has so many other great features.
I just rented a 2014 Cherokee (Latitude) for a week while in the mountains of Vermont. Hands down the worst engine/transmission combo I've driven in over a decade. The vehicle it's self is fine, but the base model engine/9-speed nonsense was painful to drive. Oh, and the 'manual' mode was absurd too. It'll indicate you're in whatever gear you choose, but then shift whenever it wants. I could shift to an 'indicated' 9th gear while moving at 1 mph, or I could be driving in 3rd, and step on the gas, and It'll downshift while still in manual mode.
Great job on the review of the new Jeep. Since you guys are there with those Jeep representatives , can you ask them if we will ever have a manual transmission on this new vehicle ?
i think the front is OK & I like the back. I think the design definitely could be better, but with the interior, trailhawk capability, mpg... I'll take it :)
Read the Jeep Cherokee forum on Edmunds, and all the folks that bought them and are having transmission issues. I test drove one, and just got the sense that it would not be reliable, seems "fussy" and balky switching in and out of the off-road modes. The testaments on Edmunds validate my impressions. Would love to support an American-made product like this, but can't, given the reliability history.
The other problem is the price: The basic model is about $20k. Jeep jacks the Trail Hawk model up to $30K. Then, the out the door MSRP, at least of the one I tested, was $38K+!!!! The price doubled to get to the options that made it worthwhile.......bad value at that point.
Stay away from the Jeep Cherokee 2015 my jeep has less than 3 thousand miles; they are putting a new transmission in. don’t waste your money recalling the transmission parts
Is it just me or does seem like the guys at Jeep were kind of beating around the bush when Roman asked them questions about why the Cherokee looks the way it does?
The mistake is thinking that the "goal" of a "Cherokee" is to be capable off road. That is not it at all. The XJ was the swiss army knife of vehicles, rugged, durable, practical, capable, and most importantly, SIMPLE! I was towing a 5,000 pound load on a 2,000 pound trailer in 98 degree heat when my aux. cooling fan died. I kept towing until gage in red, shut down to cool, kept repeating till I got home(syn oil). No damage and I could fix it if there was. Try that with anything new!
Exactly what Nathan said. May take some getting used to. Apart from everything cant get to think of it as a "Cherokee" and for that reason would not end up buying it.
Just regular gasoline. Fuel efficiency depends on the model you get. There's no real difference in fuel economy between FWD models and 4X4 models with Active Drive I, but Trailhawk editions and models with Active Drive II suffer as a result of the added weight of the system. Go to the EPA's fuel economy website if you wanna see the numbers.
I dont get why everybody hates the design! I love it!
Same!
best SUV in its class for adverse weather conditions and the day time running light design makes it look very elegant.
I am not a jeep guy but this gets my attention.
im thinking about getting one
Jeffrey Horton DO IT!
That was my first impression, then I started to see the reasons for the change. I like the new modern look now. I like the comfortable interior, and the modern aerodynamic style. 31 miles to the gallon is very appealing too.
I really like the design. Drives amazing while being well built with high quality interior and great standard equipment. I think it's a winner.
I've seen quite a bit of them and honestly they aren't so bad. It grows on you after a while
How about the Pontiac Aztek? That was CERTAINLY ugly.
Crescent Cab Absolutely right
Please lose the transition music between scenes guys...great reviews love the channel but the tunes are annoying
They are selling exceptionally well.
Starting to see these around. So much better looking in person and I like it a lot
At first I thought the look was iffy but now I don't think it's that bad. I think it's because of the newness of the vehicle that puts off a lot of Jeep enthusiasts (i'm not one by the way).
I was ready to pull the trigger on a Toyota Tacoma but will wait until I see and test drive this new Cherokee. Visually it is a stunner!
recently bought one and its a nice jeep to drive, will be going on the beach with it real soon.
Just bought a 2018 Latitude Plus with the V6 and 4WD and I love It.
just bought a 2014 Cherokee last week and I'm loving it so far
which one do you have? I like the trailhawk or the v6 limited with the active drive II, have you drive them?, what is your personal opinion?
I like this Jeep. Uniquely styled, almost quirky !! I'm just a bit unsure of a Jeeps reliability !! I've heard several horror stories
I just bought a Latitude trim to replace a Dodge Journey. I feel it's a very solid car. I had a chance today to drive it in very heavy rain and it performed wonderfully. i often drive my parent's jeep compass, i love it, specially during snowy winter.
What was wrong with the previous youtube window layout, they crammed everything into one single icon which makes everything take more time to adjust... Love the Jeep btw!
front end is hideous. I wonder how many designers will be fired when the low sales numbers come in
Its #1 against Rav4 and CRV
Sales have been through the roof so far, so no one is getting fired.
Hideous... to you. Plenty of others love it. You need to be more objective.
How's that low sales thing doing for you
i like it.

Nathan, I like your Steelers cap! Keep having fun driving cars for a living.
people just buy a jeep that looks like a jeep if you want one...This one looks really cool to me it looks diffrent than most things you see
I think the Trailhawk model looks better than any other one of the cheerokee editions but man that price is up there for a limited model.
You can purchase the badges from auction sites or the Jeep deeler
Actually "Jeep Badger" has a nice ring to it.
Any idea when they'll start showing up on the lot?
You took the words out of my mouth in regards to this car. I don't know how you personally feel about the design; I don't have much problem with it, although it is polarising. This is such a nice car to be honest!
what is the size of the 4 cly? is it the same 1.4 turbo used in the Dart? Either you guys forgot to tell us or I missed it.
I think the V6 sounds awesome
Very aggressive-looking. I love it. I'll take a Trailhawk with the 3.2 V6.
So Nathan, when you say that the Cherokee is a modern vehicle built for people who want to go offload occasionally, are you talking about any model or are you
You guys have excellent timing. I really needed something to distract me from studying.

The Weasel is really nice inside, behind, and from the back, but it is horrendous from in front. That should be a Ravens hat btw.
When are these cars hitting the market
What are some cars that are very good on the snow?
I don't see what the fuss is about. I think it looks great. I like those sharp headlights. It stands out. Its not vanilla or appliance like most of the bestsellers in its class. This, cx5, forester....all good alternatives to the others.
Roman or Nathan, what's the horsepower and torque of the 4-cylinder engine?
The looks are actually growing on me soon. And honestly, I can see it replacing my Wifes Liberty Limited in 2 years.
What kind of road bike do you ride Roman? I ride a Specialized myself.
Not sure what folks down at Jeep have been smoking, but this redesign just 'ain't cuttin' it.
Lets see more videos on the restoration of that wonderful Continental Mark V.
That is even more true in markets where vehicles are taxed on CO2 emissions.
they sold over 10,000 one month
Neon/caliber/dart doesn't really matter they were/are all made in Belvedere Illinois.
Where does this thing stack up against the subaru outback?
That style of jeep is still in production .It is the Jeep wrangler or the Rubicon among many others that are the Jeep you are use to. I had a negative like at first on this look, then I changed my mind .I love it. I like the other style of Jeep Just like you do. I think it will grow on people.
I own a trailhawk so far very good- i will bein mountains next month & can't wait -- I don't really like the front but it has so many other great features.
Looks like they will sale a bunch of them...just not to me I placed a order for the 2014 Escape Titanium.
Call me weird but I actually really like the way it looks...
@andrew johnson. Yes it does, it looks like a kia sportage from the back
Can't wait for the Srt 8 version.
I definitely want to see a comparison of liberty and Cherokee.
Jeeps version of a Pontiac aztec?
All they have to do to fix it is make the top light either dissapear or enlarge it.
You guys really got your moneys worth with that song clip.
I don't like the headlights or the day lights on it. They could of done a lot better, other than that looks good
What happened to diamond in the rough?
It's that Andre on Nathan's shirt??
Why not a mash-up between the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and the Subaru Forester XT?
Stay away from the Jeep Cherokee 2015 my jeep has less than 3 thousand miles; they are putting a new transmission in. don’t waste your money recalling the transmission parts
I like it, I like it a lot - for the segment it is competing in.
Is it just me or does seem like the guys at Jeep were kind of beating around the bush when Roman asked them questions about why the Cherokee looks the way it does?
is the 9 speeds standard or optional ???
the ultimate question is: is it a good step up from the liberty?
The mistake is thinking that the "goal" of a "Cherokee" is to be capable off road. That is not it at all. The XJ was the swiss army knife of vehicles, rugged, durable, practical, capable, and most importantly, SIMPLE! I was towing a 5,000 pound load on a 2,000 pound trailer in 98 degree heat when my aux. cooling fan died. I kept towing until gage in red, shut down to cool, kept repeating till I got home(syn oil). No damage and I could fix it if there was. Try that with anything new!
Love it.. good job Jeep! About time they started making better vehicles
Exactly what Nathan said. May take some getting used to. Apart from everything cant get to think of it as a "Cherokee" and for that reason would not end up buying it.
So this is not the replacement for the Grand Cherokee?
I'm just asking.
What gas does the Cherokee use? Is it good for fuel efficiency>?
Just regular gasoline. Fuel efficiency depends on the model you get. There's no real difference in fuel economy between FWD models and 4X4 models with Active Drive I, but Trailhawk editions and models with Active Drive II suffer as a result of the added weight of the system. Go to the EPA's fuel economy website if you wanna see the numbers.
Well I actually like it, especially in silver
