  • A playthrough of Infogrames' 1994 NES game, The Smurfs.
    This Smurfs was a pretty late-gen NES title, and was only produced for PAL territories. I was surprised when i learned that - I loved this game, and I was surprised that it never came out here after we moved back to the states . As a little kid, I seem to remember The Smurfs appearing much more often on American TV than British. Of course, that might have been a consequence of having a whole four channels - the Spice Girls hadn't introduced the fifth yet lol). I think it's a bit sad that much of the world never got to see this, because this game is absolutely superb.
    It's a simple, no frills platformer that relies on super-precision jumping (and does it well), but the graphics are really excellent, and that soundtrack is the stuff of legends.
    Playing this again was a really happy throwback to my much younger self. To anyone who missed it the first time around, give this a go. It deserves the chance!

    Never played any of the Smurfs games as a child. Did watch the Hanna-Barbera cartoon though. Gotta say, the music does sound pretty inspired.

    Huh, for an NES game, it does look rather nice! And you seem to have had a pretty enjoyable time with it too! The level design does seem better overall. Though they could still hint at the fact you can pick up stuff earlier in the game. Also, in the Sledge Race, "why is there money in my Smurf game"

      She may have white hair due to the NES's colour limitations. The NES only displays 4 colours for each palette, one of which has to be shared across other palettes, meaning each palette only has 3 colour practically. White, Black and blue in this case

      btw fun fact: the reason this was a pal exclusive was because even if the smurfs played less on britain, it played alot on spain and germany (gasland)

      A lot of the sound people that worked for Infogrames and Sunsoft during this time got their start doing music for the Commodore 64, so they already had plenty of experience. If you noticed the minimal sound effects in this game, that's so they could free up more sound channels for the music so you wouldn't have instruments dropping out whenever some other noise played.

    Infogrames released lots of great games for NES: Asterix, North&South, Smurfs etc.:) Surprised they released game for NES at such late timespan of NES, 1994 was year when Saturn and PSX arrived in Japan:)

      I know that, at least in England, the 8-bit stuff was still fairly popular in 1994. The NES still was sitting alongside the SNES and the MD in shops.

    • @WeskerSega
      @WeskerSega 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1. This version of the game was only released in Europe, so the Spanish translation is intended for Spain.
      2. It was always far more common for Spain to receive Spanish localizations that it ever was for the American Hispanic countries, so even if it wasn't the common trend, it's also not as strange as you may think.
      3. If all of the above wasn't enough, the 8 bit versions of this game were developed in Spain, so the original language of all the 8 bit versions of the game is actually Spanish.

    The main reason why The Smurfs wasn't shown on European television as much as it was here in the US like you said in your description is because The Smurfs is more well known as a Belgian comic book. I lived in France for 2 months summer of 2017, and I saw comics of The Smurfs in a ton of grocery stores. (Fun Fact: french comic books are called Bande Desinée, and are made more like giant children's books.

    why this low key have Donkey Kong Country vibes and similarities? And this game came first 1993. Edit ok I typed the previous comment at the snow mountain stage and then what comes after that lo and behold a railroad in a cart. I'm convinced that this definitely inspired the levels and themes of the Donkey Kong Country project.

    I had the game boy version of this. This one is missing 2 levels. Some levels, like "the mountains", or the "bubbles" bonus stage, have you go up, but in this version they're sideways?! Does NES not have vertical scrolling? 🤔

    I have the game boy port which have more levels and the music is different in some levels. Also, azrael wasnt the first boss on gameboy, but a snake. Very good 2d jump n run game and better then smurfs on snes. The snes game was unfair sometimes but the gameboy version always fair. Also, the controll on the snes game is pure garbage and clunky as hell
