  • Hey all,
The Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon (Mogurnda Mogurnda) was thought to be extinct for many years until a chance discovery rescued the species.
These days they are available within the hobby and might be a great choice for your aquarium, if you can find them.
    Hope you like the video.

*correction: Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon is latin name Mogurnda Adspersa, not Mogurnda Mogurnda as stated in this video 😅

Nice guide Blake. Very interesting fish, such a shame they are endangered but far out, after 34 years being discovered again is amazing. Great to hear their numbers are improving, in the aquarium hobby at least.

Another interesting fish to learn about first thing in the morning! Great observations and information with breeding and keeping these fish Blake! I do like their chunky little selves! Beautiful fish as well, it's really interesting about their personalities and what type of parents you described them as! I really enjoyed the video. Thanks for teaching me about something new. I always enjoy learning with you! Another fish to jot down on my wish list! Thank you for sharing!! I hope you had a wonderful day! 👍🤗🌿🐟🌿💚🙏

Mate there are two species: the southern PSG (Mogurnda adspersa) and the northern PSG (Mogurnda mogurnda ). The latter was thought to be extinct whilst the other is doing well. They breed like rabbits in an aquarium and sexing them is pretty easy when they’re larger as the males develop a big bull head.

I'm so thankful that they were found again and are being captive bred! With those beautiful red and white stripes, and the blue areas, they should be called the 🇺🇲American Flag Fish!! Im joking- and no disrespect to an endangered species, treasured by your nation.🇦🇺

hi there these are gorgeous fish !! i was wondering which species you keep though as Mogurnda mogurnda is the 'northern purple spotted gudgeon' and Mogurnda adpersa is the 'southern psg' ?

i was thinking the same thing, as i was pretty sure Mogurnda mogurnda was the northern and the only ones really found in the hobby 🤷‍♂️ and luckily they are very abundant in the wild. Although id loved to be proven wrong as it is awesome to keep an endangered fish.
