    THANK YOU!!!! I am 3 weeks post ACDF, and like you not really feeling pain and impatient so have been doing stuff. Gosh I hope I haven't done any damage. Thanks to you I will now just take it easy, no trimming hedges or sweeping paths, or sawing off small branches off the peach tree (only takes a second or two and its easy - so I thought). Will stick to walking. Have first phone consult with neurosurgeon 11 July (surgery was 9 May) so hopefully if I am good from now on it will all be ok... I cannot thank you enough for this video, I haven't been able to find much on activity post op and I think yours has quite possibly saved my surgery!!!!

    Saw your comment re your knee... heads-up: take a look at 'knee, prolotherapy, caring medical' in YT search. With prolotherapy you just might be able to avoid knee surgery and get back to where you were before it started playing up! Good luck.

    Thank you for sharing your journey with your ACDF. I was having some significant symptoms related to this issue but it was the pain that got me into docs. MRI & X-rays later I have c-4 through c_6 needing to be fused. Your videos helped me as what could happen (everyone is different) after surgery. I am having a bit of anxiety about it but you have helped me to relax a bit. Thank you

      Thanks for chiming in. It's normal to feel anxiety with this, it's a serious surgery, but very routine for the doctors. The anticipation of the unknown is the worst. It's tough for the first week or so, but time goes by and you will be happier with the results than you are with your pre-surgery conditions. I hate surgery, but given the circumstances, I'm very happy I had mine done and am way better off for it. Good luck, and keep me posted!

      Thanks for chiming in. I hope that all gets restored for you too. I had issues after my back fusions with a lot of lingering nerve issues, several I was told not to expect it to get better, but they did. Here's to hoping! BYW, my neck fusion was just off I-15 in Sandy, at that big IHC hospital. 53rd South or so. Peter Maughan is my surgeon. Good luck!!

    Looks like you had a nice recovery. Just wondering if you feel limited to what you can do now that your over a year out. Im a arborist and will have to have this surgery c6c7 this month. Im hoping I will be able to continue my career once I’m healed.

    • @FusedandFit
      @FusedandFit  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for chiming in. My neck fusion has not limited me at all. I take that back, I was going to enter a boxing tournament but decided not to because of it. I still ride motorcycles and workout regularly. I still do a ton of yard work. I still ride mountain bikes. I've cut back on flag football and basketball, but I've had a knee issue and have to get my toe fused, so it is more because of that, that and my back fusions. You may have to adapt a little, looking up at the sky (fireworks, airplanes, anything directly overheard) can be a little uncomfortable, but I adjust. It's actually almost been two years (November) so I'll do another update soon. Good luck with yours!

      My very first symptom of a compressed nerve was losing control of my pick onstage. I found the pick angle sliding out of control. Doc said this morning that the C6-C7 nerve was visibly red and 'dented' on the right side more than left and that it should mostly recover in a year. Blew my mind that he described the actual red irritated nerve.

    I had a 3 level ACDF November 6, 23. I've had 3 post op Dr visits, and he has told me I'm progressing really well. My major concern now is I'm still having problems with swallowing. If I just swallow saliva, it feels like I'm swallowing a marble. I have food that will get stuck and choke me. Even chewing smaller portions until the food is practically mush when I swallow my throat feels like its smaller in size than pre surgery and it's hard to get it to go down. I just had a barium swallow test with x-ray and nothing conclusive was found. Right now, I'm guessing that I'm stuck with the problem, or it'll work itself out. Other than the swallow problem everything is much better than before surgery. I haven't been totally released from the Dr but am free to walk as much as I want to and yard work. Plus, gym is back in my life with light lifting such as around 35 pounds.

    • @FusedandFit
      @FusedandFit  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It will all get better. I felt like I had a coin in my throat for a while. I look back on it all now and am amazed at how well it all turned out. Just back from the gym and a tough workout with my son, it's like I never had a problem and never had the surgery. You'll get there!

    I literally just returned from the hospital after my ACDF yesterday. I am also a super impatient guy and wanting to lift weights, run, get s**t done. Instruction both pre and post surgery have seemed like "too much" with the lung exerciser, protein drinks, high protein meals, antibacterial body washes, this awful neck brace, yadda yadda. Watching this is a big help as far as taking the doc's recommendations seriously. It is SO hard to slow down. What do you think about some lower body exercises like lying leg raises for abs?

    • @FusedandFit
      @FusedandFit  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for chiming in. I wondered about leg raises, too, but decided on my own not to. I know me too well, I would have rationalized doing more than that. I held off completely. Looking back on it, to me went by quickly. Sucked big-time at the time, but has been worth waiting. Although, I risked it on the Splash Mountain ride at Disneyland 3.5 weeks post surgery. That was a lot dumber of me than leg raises would've been. I would just walk a lot...get 8-10k steps in each day and call it good.

    • @FusedandFit
      @FusedandFit  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Elida, what kind of pain are you still feeling? Is it the nerve pain in your arms and other areas, or is more like muscle pain in your lower neck and shoulders? Or something different?
      Sleeping was probably one of the hardest things for me to figure out. I slept in a recliner for awhile after my surgery, but that started to bother my back. I currently sleep with four pillows, a huge feather filled pillow, two regular sized pillows that were extra fluffy, and a small pillow (shaped like a tube) I put between my knees. I have always been a stomach sleeper which is not good for a fused neck. I fall asleep on my side now with one regular pillow and the huge pillow under my neck and head, and the other regular pillow in front of my hip to keep me from rolling onto my stomach. The huge pillow I fold in half or reposition a couple times until it gets comfortable enough to fall asleep.
      Still being in pain for a month is not uncommon. Unfortunately, pain can linger for quite some time. My lower neck and shoulders hurt for a long time. My nerve pain would come and go for months before finally going away.
      I hope this information helps a little. Good luck as you continue to heal. It doesn't usually go as quickly as we hope it will, but it does get better. Keep me posted please...take care.

    • @FusedandFit

      No, not necessarily. As I understand it, a fail is when the fusion itself doesn't happen...the bone doesn't "fuse" together, so you still have two separate pieces, instead of one solid piece.

    How are you doing with recovery now? I thought your pre surgery symptoms sounded similar to my husband. He’s 2 weeks out and feeling quite a bit disappointed with his recovery. The collar seems to be a lot of the problem imo. Curious to see how you are now. Thanks

    • @FusedandFit
      @FusedandFit  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there, thanks for chiming in. I'm actually doing exceptionally well, I literally never think about that I had the fusion done. Ok, not never, but almost never. I don't remember how I felt two weeks into it, though I couldn't swallow and I had a lot of muscle pain. Actually, I recall thinking things were going well, but then they seemed to not be, one step forward two steps back kind of thing. It is slow at first, but when the weeks start to go by you see and feel improvement. I honestly feel great now. I should do an updated video explaining that. About the collar, I just had the soft collar and really only wore it when I was in a car or sitting. I'm not sure I even wore it after two weeks. Sorry, I'm rambling, hope this helps somehow. Good luck to him!

      @@aplaceformedaycare Hey there, Linda (that's what the TH-cam prompt referred to you as), that is correct, just 5-7. That will make your husband's recovery a little different than mine, not a ton, but a little. A friend of mine was a running back (college and NFL), had 4-7 done about a year before mine, and he's doing great. I've had back fusions too, and my neck is doing better than those overall. Having to be patient is the suckiest part, time drags after fusions, but he will heal just fine. Follow the doctor's orders to a T and things will be much better than if he tries to rush back, having to do a revised fushion is bad, so be sure he's just patient. This will be a blip on the radar within a few months. Hang in there! Stupid advice, but it really is a game of hurry up and wait. It's a good time for introspection and recalibrating life a little bit. Rambling again, sorry...

    • @aplaceformedaycare
      @aplaceformedaycare ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A back fusion is next for him too. He has had bone on bone in his lower back for years. The neck came out of the blue and masked the lower back pain before surgery. Now that this surgery is done, the lower back seems to be coming back with a vengeance. He’s doing really well following the doctors orders. He has cut back on the meds he was on. Gabapentin swelled his legs so badly. He does have one of the best if not the best neurosurgeons in Delaware. Do that update!
