  • Having a septoplasty operation can be quite worrying and I believe people need to completely understand how the operation is performed, what the risks and complications are and finally what we should do before and after the operation. In this video I pretend you are my patient and I explain this operation to you.
I hope you find it useful.
Things I normally prescribe after this operation
    Simple painkillers
    amzn.to/3QC0uKL - NeilMed Sinus Rinse
    amzn.to/3AwoCsN - Nasal Steroid Spray
    amzn.to/3dz5e5b - Hypertonic Sterimar
Naseptin / Bactroban nasal cream / ointment

Had my septoplasty done 5 days ago. Was terrified after reading comments but it was no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be. The first night after surgery was obviously unpleasant. Didnt sleep a wink. The worst conjestion you could ever imagine and a sore throat from the breathing tube they put in while under GA. First 2 to 3 days feels like you've got a very bad cold whilst being punched in the nose. But it started to clear up a bit after day 3. Had no bleeding at all since i left hospital and not much pain. Couple of more days ill be back to work! Dont worry people, its uncomfortable but not that bad.

Hi doctor, great video, very well informed.
    Sharing my own post-operation experience:
I had a stand-alone RFA turbinate ablation. Sadly, the ENT who performed the operation ablated too much on my right inferior turbinate, which resulted into a mini-empty nose syndrome (read bellow, my nose is healed now) which happened due to the turbinate bone getting exposed. The ENT did not ablate the back of my inferior turbinates, so the improvement is minimal. I did everything right in terms of post-op visits to the doctor, using nasal anti-bacterial ointment and so forth. Post-op there was some moderate pain (5-6) to my front teeth.
The next ENT surgeon I visited prescribed lubrication for 6 more months (* Used nasogel but rinopanteina drops / ointment did it for me) for my turbinate to heal, now we can perform the ablation again in about November. Thankfully, the bone now isn't exposed anymore, my mucosa is healing up nicely, there was also a complication due to long-term usage of nasal steroids, I had a small hole (start of perforated septum) in my septum, which too is healing now since I lubricate the area.
The operation took place on 14/04/2022, now, 19/08/2022 I am much better, but will need to repeat the operation as I mentioned above.
Finally, I am glad that I've met a surgeon who was more than willing to explain and didn't rush for an operation.
I've tried everything, from nasal steroids to nasal rinsing, breathe right and other nasal dilators, even used vicks aromatherapy, these things didn't work for me.
My word of advise, interview your doctor thoroughly, thankfully, I settled to an experienced ENT who listened thoroughly.
I would like to thank dr. Veer, your videos have been both informative and comforting, from learning how to use steroid sprays the right way, for helping me understand how manage post-op pain after tonsillectomy.

Thank you so much for making this highly informative video. I had a septoplasty 20 years ago, and the surgeon outfractured and cauterized my inferior turbinates. I’m now in the process of finding out if I have sleep apnea, and my pulmonologist told me I have a deviated septum. This explains why my right nostril collapses when I inhale through my nose. I wish I could travel to the UK and have you fix everything so I could breathe properly again. Meanwhile, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying your videos and learning a lot.

When I say that I feel the benefits, it’s because I literally felt air through spaces in my nose that I didn’t before. For me the worst part is those days that you have the splints inside because you will feel the pressure of the splint and that will make it harder to breathe because as much as we want to clean them, you will never be able to clean them enough. I wish you could come to the United States then I would definitely have this surgery which I do need because of a deviated septum from the age of 10 from an injury. As I got older, it gets worse (sinus infections, constantly blowing my nose, nasal drip, etc.) I can breathe through my nose quite well though. But when I look up ENTs in Arizona, they all have very bad reviews and they do not have any bed side manners. You explain everything so well and you have a great personality and no doubt a great surgeon.

Hi Doc. That was very illuminating. I have a question, the answer to which i cannot find anywhere on the web. I am a choir trainer and a 22 year old pupil of mine just had this procedure done as he had difficulty breathing through one nostril. The procedure was successful and he now has a straightened septum. He now finds that he cannot hold his breath like he used to. This is essential for singing and he is quite upset that he might not ever be able to sing properly again. How is this caused by a septoplasty? or is it something that will fix it self with time. Do the Turbinates play a role in holding your breath? Could it be that the altered nasal passages are now open because the Turbinates that might be deformed or small due to the initial deviation of the septum, are now unable to help him hold his breath? Any information you could give us on this paticular side effect would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I'm on my 3rd week AFTER surgery. My surgery was a Septal Reconstruction + Bilateral inferior Turbinate Submucosal Resection. Basically my Septum was corrected and my Turbinates were shrunken because they too, were making it hard to breathe. Packing wasn't necessary because my ENT specialist doesn't like the bacterial concern so he uses 4% Cocain and 1% Lidocain for bleeding.
Saline rinses with clean (boiled and the chilled water) changed the game during the first 2 weeks and using clean Q tips to coat Bacitrocin gel throughout my nasal cavity (deep) to keep dried blood from crusting and blocking my airway during healing.
Felt no pain after the 1st day. It was wonderful he did an excellent job. After 10 days my post op doctor cleaned out the inside of my nose with what looked like a micro dental suction tube and that helped alot, I wasn't using enough Bacitrocine and had gunk up there. After that I was able to breathe great. I still use the rinse but not as frequent and I don't need the gel as much. I look forward to the next post on apt and see where I am!

Now I am scared. I am 67. At 5 I put a crayon up there and a doctor thought he pushed it into my esophagus. Nope. At 25 I nearly choked on this horrible looking thing, reading in bed, as he literally pushed it up into my sinus where it sat growing into sinus cavities for 20 years. (My formative years.) I was given a number to see another ENT outside my area as they said I need a specialist after my CT scan. My right side is completely blocked now. I pray I will smell again one day.

@@VikVeerENTSurgeon I had a big toenail removed 12 days ago and a new trainee bandaged my toe too tight and cut off the circulation for 48 hours. Now I'm losing skin and tissue because it was cut off from the blood supply, it's now infected, 12 days later it's still mostly numb but the part that isn't numb hurts like hell. Now I have to go to a wound care specialist. If you can have a bad outcome on a toe then what if that would have been my nose and my sinuses. I'm not ready to dive into any more surgeries right now so I'm going to cancel the sinus surgery. No clue if and when my toe will ever get back to normal. To add to my woes got an infection in nostril got some cream from GP hopefully it will help but no sign of the infection getting better on day two of applying it, says 10 days but I don’t want it to worsen. This is truly an uncomfortable situation and not what I expected maybe in a few months I will be pleased with results. NHS staff great but follow up treatment see you out the door in a few hours and then in 3 months. nhs way behind other countries in term of treatment follow up drugs etc. I had knee surgery two weeks previously so feels like my body has hit a wall. Two weeks off is at least I need. If this infection worsens back to see the consultant. 😢

Hey Dr Veer, thanks for such a helpful video. Its certainly given me a load more info than I i received pre and post -op for having a septoplasty done...much appreciated 🙏🏻
My op was done a week ago. Today my GP prescribed me Co-amoxiclav as my right nostril has been swollen and inflamed at the bottom of the septum where there are stitches. My next post-op appointment with ENT is 2 months away so I'm glad my GP took action.
Do you think this will be suffice for treating an infection post-op or should I really have presented at A&E?
Stitches wise as well - I was not given any information on if they are absorbable or any need taking out.
Should I work on the assumption that they are absorbable if no other info was privided do you think?
