Quite a bit late to your comment, but there is an auto tracking feature in Tracker. You create a new point mass from Track -> New Point Mass, then when you select its dropdown menu, you should see an option "Autotracker..."

And if we use shift key to select the point recorded into the plot ,how can we click the same position in all pictures? For we all know that it's hard to promise the precision and it affects the result .Thanks!
the "E" notation is the power of 10. For example, 3.00E1 means 3.00 x 10^1 (= 30) and 3.00E-1 means 3.00 x 10^-1 (= 0.300). To mark the same position as the previous frame hold down the shift key and hit Enter instead of clicking the mouse.
Hi Douglas, I was introduced to your software with video by a physics lab and was wondering if it would be possible to analyze data from my current project with Tracker. We ran a series of percolation tests and set up cameras to record trials, but instead of continuous video we opted to take photos at one minute intervals. We marked the white inside of the inner-most ring by inches with black sharpie and the water was pretty discolored and I think the software could follow the object, but I'm not sure if it's possible to upload as it's not a video, I remember this software was amazing and so great to use and made getting numbers a breeze and would love to use it here and introduce it to the partner I'm working with. Thank you and thanks for your work !
Yes you can open multiple images (jpg, png, gif) in Tracker and treat them as a video. One way is to name all the images the same but with sequential numbers (eg img01.jpg, img02.jpg, img03.jpg, ...). Then opening the first will open all. Another way is to open one image, then choose Video|Import images and select the images you want to add either before or after the current frame.
@@thomas22az You can right-click a plot and choose Define to bring up the Data Builder where you can define potential energy as a Data Function. Search for "data function" in Tracker Help.

Hi Aaron, probably the Xuggle video engine can't interpret the codec. The work-around is to convert the video to another format--I suggest FLV since Xuggle handles that very well. There are numerous free video converters out there. I use Freemake which is good but you have to ignore the ads to upgrade and don't install any extras at installation time. Just an annoyance. Hope this helps. Doug

@@trackervideotool Yes the bug is there mostly.Sometime I can rename and the other time I cannot. the default name is mass A, I want to rename it to any other parameters for example: depth, velocity and so on. The dialog box cannot be closed and always need to force stop the software.

Can we use a measure stick which is not in the same plane as the point mass object?.. can we use the distance of the object from the camera and also the measure stick to get more appropriate measurement?
Yes, that could work fine as long as the measuring stick and plane of the motion are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the camera line of sight.
Just downloaded Tracker - but it won't accept .MOV files! It refuses to even recognise the sample videos that Tracker provides. Does anyone know what the problem is
Look at Help|Diagnostics|About Xuggle. Also Help|Diagnostics|About Java. If you're using Windows I wonder if you're running Tracker in a 64-bit Java VM, in which case the video engine will not work. You can download a 32-bit Java installer from www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
That video was produced by the LivePhoto physics project (google their web site) but I just checked and I can't find it any more. If they removed it you'll have to find another or shoot your own. Sorry! You might try googling "Galileo's Projectile video" and see what you find...
I want to find out the speed of a falling object in tracker . Can someone please help me with understand data? I did setup according to help videos but not sure how to get simple speed data understanding like ball falling to say 1000 mm in 5 seconds ?

Results depends on many factors, but in general it is difficult to get 0.1% uncertainty due to camera and calibration issues. This is not a limitation of the software.

Probably yes. As long as you can measure the rock speeds before and after colliding.

You probably need to convert the video to a different format like FLV. There are several free video converters out there.

i cant find the data tool?
What would you suggest to do if the moving object stretches out and becomes blurry while it's falling?
Thomas De Cock try tracking the leading or trailing edge of the object.
