This is a tutorial on how to use Tracker to track and analyze the motion of an object in a video. Tracker is a free video analysis and modeling tool from Open Source Physics.
Thanks for sharing this amazing software. I have some videos showing rock falling from a mountain. Can this software analyze the coefficient of restitution for the rock impacting the mountain?
Probably yes. As long as you can measure the rock speeds before and after colliding.
Thank you so much. You save my life and my future carrier!!!
hi bro. Can you sent me this video which you use???
Sorry I don’t have it anymore. It’s a video produced by LivePhoto Physics. I think it was called Galileo’s Projectile.
thanks a lot dude
Thank you for saving my life Douglas Brown. I have an extremely awful physics teacher who cannot teach us how to use the tracker however this will let me pass my assignment. God bless your soul🙏
How to analyze step counts on video in race on treadmill? Is for my Master degree thesis. :)
Hey Douglas, Thanks for this great tool! I was wondering if there is a possibility to analyze videos with a changing perspective? And 3D movement?
Yes, the perspective filter can change from one frame to the next. Read about it in Help.
Hi, really appreciate your software. Helping me to analyze my wave motion for my master thesis. Please resolve the bug I encountered while setting the mass name in the track. it froze in that window and need to force stop the software.
Is that bug reproducible? What is the name you're trying to set?
@@trackervideotool Yes the bug is there mostly.Sometime I can rename and the other time I cannot. the default name is mass A, I want to rename it to any other parameters for example: depth, velocity and so on. The dialog box cannot be closed and always need to force stop the software.
@@pritambogati7788 I haven't had any previous reports of this bug. What is your OS?
@@trackervideotool I tried it in windows 10 and windows 11. I can send you a video attachment of the bug I am facing if it is possible to get your mail. Thanks 🙂
@@pritambogati7788 Sure, it's dobrown at cabrillo dot edu
Your app is fucking shit, it deleted all my fucking work. Cancer app
thank you so much
thank you very much, im new to this program and this video is very useful to understand all the base functions
Doug Brown, thank you so much for this intuitive software! Had to develop a video analysis and plot of a sine wave fin motion and I was recommended Kinovea. Unfortunately it doesn't work with MacOS or in Parallels. On the other hand, your software easily installed and worked first try. After reviewing your video and documentation I had the entire project completed within a few hours and exported to a sharable Excel sheet with the data export option. Again, thank you for this open source, free option!
Thanks Doug Brown, I appreciate you.
Very helpful, thank you!
Great
my man i swear to god after 9 years, you're still so useful, i thank you a lot
Thanks for that! I love hearing good tings from a long-time user :-)
big voicecrack on minute 4.21
you probably won't see this in time, but tracker keeps rotating my video the wrong way, is there anyway I can fix that?
Choose Video|Filters|New|Rotate to rotate or reflect the video.
Thanks heaps for this. Need to calculate velocity of a projectile for a physics project for school. My teacher recommended this tool but I had no idea how to use it. Great tutorial, clear and concise.
How to find the distance of an object whose motion is non-linear???
The data variable L (path length) measures the total distance along the path of a point mass. Is this what you want?
I love you sir
I thought this program would help me stalk my ex, and so I was severely disappointed when I found out it wasn't that kind of tracker lmao 💀
Thank you so much for the software Mr.Brown!
can i track a vehicle going on a curvy road, by this software
You certainly can manually. If autotracking the changing orientation of the vehicle might be tricky but you should be able to do it with multiple key frames.

Hi,I am trying to simulate the sloshing phenomena. i have got the video file of the sloshing. Now I want to get the plot of amplitude of free surface variation with time. So in tracker which tracker option should I select??
Use a point mass to track the surface at a single horizontal position. If you use the autotracker, rotate the axes so the x-axis points up and check the "x-axis only" box in the autotracker dialog.
@@trackervideotool thanks for the reply. I tried doing this. But I am not getting desired results, i.e I am getting pointed graph, not a smooth curve, I should get repeated sinusoidal variation with beats. Any idea how to do it?
@@sajidmomin7759 it’s impossible to know what the issue is without seeing the video. Have you looked carefully at the marked points to see if they are reasonable? Have you tried marking the points by hand?
@@trackervideotool i saw the video,I am getting graph, but that graph is not smooth
wow this tracker is the best tracjer i have ever. seeb abd i used the tracker to tracj down my dad who has been gone for 5 yars and then i used thos ti throw a axxe ay him and he dided which was sad but then i watchied this vieo again and asaw what i did wrong so thank hou for trying to save my life but killin g my dad cause he was a l bozo and had a clear skill issue ao he an cry
For 14:41, is it better if the value of the parameter is smaller? Thank you so much
Hi Douglas, I was introduced to your software with video by a physics lab and was wondering if it would be possible to analyze data from my current project with Tracker. We ran a series of percolation tests and set up cameras to record trials, but instead of continuous video we opted to take photos at one minute intervals. We marked the white inside of the inner-most ring by inches with black sharpie and the water was pretty discolored and I think the software could follow the object, but I'm not sure if it's possible to upload as it's not a video, I remember this software was amazing and so great to use and made getting numbers a breeze and would love to use it here and introduce it to the partner I'm working with. Thank you and thanks for your work !
Yes you can open multiple images (jpg, png, gif) in Tracker and treat them as a video. One way is to name all the images the same but with sequential numbers (eg img01.jpg, img02.jpg, img03.jpg, ...). Then opening the first will open all. Another way is to open one image, then choose Video|Import images and select the images you want to add either before or after the current frame.
Great simple software, well done !
Hi, is there any way to share the video analyzed after I’ve modified it with the tracking tools? I’m interesting in showing the footage to a third party with the point mass, measuring line and axes visible throughout the animation. Thanks in advance sir!
Yes, use File|Export|Video Clip.
@@trackervideotool I see, thank you very much
Hi, I’m new in using Tracker and wanted to ask how could I use it to estimate the speed of an object in a GIF? For reference, I made a GIF using GIPHY and tried to upload it on Tracker by dragging it directly on the blank page - but I couldn’t make it work, and I’m now stuck. Thanks in advance for the help.
If your gif won’t open in Tracker then there’s probably something wrong with it. Does it play automatically in a browser? Once it’s open you’ll need to set the frame rate in the clip settings and calibrate the scale.
Do you know what is problem with Tracker when it says " It can't work with this file style" (I tried mp4 with H264 Codec, mov, and avi style)
I suggest you ask this question on the Tracker forum at www.compadre.org/osp/bulletinboard/ForumDetails.cfm?FID=57 You'll need to create an account, but it is free and easy. You should also put more detail into your question. See www.compadre.org/osp/items/detail.cfm?ID=16061 for reporting guidelines.
Awesome software!

Grazie di tutto, molto utile!
Thanks!
Mr. Brown (or anyone), I was wondering if it's possible to estimate speed in the video link below. If it is, will you direct me to a tutorial that may help me to configure? Thank you. th-cam.com/video/aBkip6EhWUY/w-d-xo.html - the car coming towards the camera. I do have measurements of two points in the video. (fixed link)
I tried to watch your video but was told it is private.
It's an amazing video analysis tool. A lot of thanks.
I want to find out the speed of a falling object in tracker . Can someone please help me with understand data? I did setup according to help videos but not sure how to get simple speed data understanding like ball falling to say 1000 mm in 5 seconds ?
Highly appreciated explanation, Thank you.
dude your software suck as hell
:-( so fking boring
Dear Mr. Brown, I'm currently planning on using Tracker for the analysis of bouncing capsules, having seen how effective and intuitive it is for other applications. I just wanted to ask whether Tracker can auto-track spinning edges, where the RGB values within the search area are similar for every frame but the pixels are rotated by a certain amount. Thanks.
Sorry, Tracker is not good at autotracking things that spin. I have thought about adding that ability but it would slow down the process considerably, so that feature will not be added any time soon.
@@trackervideotool Of course, thanks for your reply.
Man dropped this master piece and left 🏃🏼♂️💨
software ini sangat bagus untuk digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran pada bidang IPA
Thanks for making this video! It was very helpful. For my experiment I need to deduce the angular velocity of a spinning skater. I was wondering is it possible to do it with using this software? If so how?
If you have a view from above it's easy because you can track an arm or something else that rotates. If not, then your best bet is to simply measure the mean time per rotation and determine angular velocity from that period.
Next time bader pls
Mr. , I must thank you a lot, I was searching for something like tracker for a project, and your explanation saved my life, I'm deeply gratefull, really. Excellent video
thanks for share!
